Finding a great optometrist feels like winning the lottery, and I hit the jackpot here. The doctor is rigorous and thorough without ever feeling rushed, genuinely one of the best diagnosticians I've seen, and a genuinely enjoyable person to spend time with. But honestly the two women at the front deserve their own review. Between them they cover glasses fitting, frame selection, lens materials, insurance navigation, and scheduling, and they do all of it with a warmth and generosity that is just rare anymore. They treat you like a person, not a transaction. This is a practice that clearly puts everything back into patient care. You feel it the moment you walk in. Dr. Neunzig and his staff are wonderful. My eyes were thoroughly examined. He listened attentively and carefully to my concerns and engaged in our conversation with personalized feedback. Prior to visiting Dr. Neunzig, I received two very badly botched lens prescriptions from a different optometrist at a different company in Monterey. After two failed attempts, I was told that it was impossible to correct my vision. I thought it was crazy to tell me that it was my fault! So, based on my neighbor's recommendation, I sought out Dr. Neunzig. Boy, was I glad I did! He had no problem at all in refracting my eyes for new lenses. I have the new glasses now and my vision in both eyes is better than 20/20! I am beyond happy to be able to see clearly again! Came here to get my eye glass prescription filled as where I normally go does not take my insurance anymore. An awesome experience from start to finish. I made myself a promise - once I had to hold a menu at arm's length, I'd go get my eyes sorted out. That time came recently. I have a vision plan through work, so I went to the vision plan's website to find the nearest place that was covered by the plan and this was that place. I haven't had my eyes tested since I was a teenager (a long long time ago, in a land far far way), so I don't have other experiences to compare with, but I'm now writing this review wearing glasses and the computer screen has not been this clear for months, if not years! Firstly, booking an appointment over the phone was painless, then when I turned up I was seen right on time. I asked the doc if he could check my distance vision to see if it was better than 20/20, so he did (and it was), then we got on to the real reason I was there. After a bunch of read this, read that, now read this again etc., he figured out where my eyes were at and then went through all the options (readers, bi-focals, graduated focals, tinted etc.) and we came to the conclusion that single focus glasses optimized for using the computer would be best. After that he did a couple of health checks on the eyes too, though I turned down the pupil dilate test (this time) 'cos I wasn't ready for the blurred vision he said would follow that test. Then it was on to the frame choice. I initially asked to see all the ones totally covered by my plan, and after trying 6 or 7 frames on (and not finding them that comfortable), went through a whole bunch more until (inevitably, I guess), I ended up with one of the more expensive frames, but they were easily the most comfortable. Given how much time I spend in front of a computer, comfort won, and the plan covered a whole bunch of it, so my total outlay for the test, the frame, the lenses etc. was under $100. They came about a week later, but there was a tiny scratch on one of the lenses (so tiny that I didn't notice it until I wore them for a while) - took them back and they got 'em re-done for me - no problems (and lots of apologies from them for the inconvenience). I was stationed in Monterey for a year and some change, for Army stuff, and this was my local eye doctor of choice for contact lenses. On days that I would schedule, they met me punctually with minimal waiting, and on days that I just walked in, the wait was never long. What I loved about this office was that the staff was friendly, and the front desk was helpful, and always ready to throw me some extra eye-care supplies every time I stopped by. Whether it was extra cases and fluids, or a couple trial boxes of the newest lens cleaner. On multiple occaisions they gave me a free trial contact lenses (of my prescription) in addition to what I ordered. Even as I was moving to another state, they gave me a free set as I left. You may not receive the same gifts I did, but I am very grateful for the services that this office provided, and I hope my review reflects how friendly, helpful, and professional they were during my time in Monterey. read more

I really liked the frame selection and the staff was very helpful with choosing my glasses and looking up insurance stuff. None of the reviews I read mentioned Dr. Neunzig, so I was worried, but he is great and tweaked my prescription, fixing an issue that had been bothering me for a while. I'm 38, haven't been to the eye doctor since the George W. Bush administration, but they made me feel super comfortable and answered all my questions. I've never worn glasses, but Deanna was super helpful with her recommendations. I learned a lot about what worked with my face and skin tone, she pointed out tiny details that I didn't notice until she mentioned them! I feel very confident about the frames she helped me pick out. All around a great place to get a comprehensive eye exam (even when you're an old newbie like me) and buy some affordable frames that fit your face perfectly. I was a bit hesitant, as private optometrists tend to be pretty pricey. I walked in off the street. The lady at the front desk actually came over and gave me opinions and advice while I tried on various frames. I found several that I liked, with her help. She priced the options out for me and I picked one, within about 15 minutes of walking in the door. My insurance wasn't an issue - she knew all about it and automatically calculated prices while talking me through them. They accepted my prescription from another optometrist, with no hassle (I had had my eyes examined before I moved to PG - next time, I'll totally come here). I got my glasses when they told me I would. The glasses were correct. The price was competitive. I'll totally come back in a couple of years! read more

I should've wrote a review the first time I established myself at this place because they made me feel so comfortable and had a great selection on glasses and a great staff. I have been going there for three years now and they have far exceeded my expectations. They are great and go above and beyond. Getting glasses is quick. And they are open a couple days a week until 6 for people that work until 5. I definitely suggest giving these folks a try. You won't be disappointed. Overall I like this office. It is small, but the staff is friendly, helpful, and efficient. Be warned that they have limited hours though. It's challenging to make any last minute appointments if you need to see the doctor. They have days where you can choose frames and order lenses, but no optometrists are on site. They are conveniently located and accepted my insurance. I am satisfied with my experience and will be back. read more

I am VERY picky with optometrists. If you take too long, I am gone. If you waste my time on stupid tests, I am gone. I just need my prescription to see and that is all. I was pleasantly surprised at Pacific Grove Optometric Center. I arrived early and was taken in early after a few minutes of paperwork. They were not pushy when I declined extra tests and was quickly moved into the exam room. The doctor was pleasant, competent and fast. I was out of there in less than 20 minutes which was awesome. Tip for contact wearers: bring your empty packages of the contacts you already wear (if you like them) so the doctor can quickly get the numbers/brand he needs off them for faster service. I will actually return to these guys, which is saying a lot for me. read more

Amazing service - we were in town on vacation and they fixed my daughters glasses free of charge. A screw was stripped and they replaced the screw, cleaned the glasses, and gave her a glasses cleaner to go. I would highly recommend this place - such a great staff and very helpful! read more
