I've visited both office locations for dry eye treatment and annual eye checkups. Writing because on multiple visits, I've overheard comments during conversations between the front desk ladies that were unprofessional in a healthcare setting. I cannot speak on whether these comments reflect any management awareness, but as a patient, it made the environment extremely uncomfortable to hear what I understood and perceived as carelessly ignorant. Living in California for a long time, these were not words I expected to hear and very inappropriate for the workplace let alone a "professional" clinic. The rest of my experience here has been great; amazing doctors and aides who have persistently helped me through my slough of issues, which makes this all the more unfortunate. I will not be returning and would strongly encourage a refresher of basic empathy, inclusiveness, and client-sided professionalism. read more

I can not recommend more highly Dr. Penrose and his staff. I recently had Cataract surgery on my left and right eye (July 2024). From the moment I walked into this office I was immediately struck by how very friendly, courteous and efficient the entire staff are. Dr. Penrose is very knowledgeable, extremely patient and was willing to spend his time answering all my questions (I had many) to ensure I felt at ease with the procedure and what I could expect result wise for my vision after surgery. Jessica who coordinates and schedules surgery dates, after surgery follow up appointments, details on medication, eye drops, after surgery care, booking the surgery center is exceptional and went out of her way to accommodate appointment times and dates to fit into my schedule. I had absolutely no problems with insurance billing and any costs, co-payments, etc all all were fully explained in detail. Dr. Penrose and his entire staff have a very high level of professionalism, combined with efficiency, friendly demeanor and patient care. Just the very best experience and I am so grateful. 3 months after cataract surgery and my vision is better than 50 years ago! Competent, friendly with good follow up

Dr Penrose is great! Bought my contacts here, soft lens for high prescription, really liked them! But ... after being changed to someone else and then having a billing issue that took a while to resolve, I don't think I'll be coming back. The front office is friendly but also not helpful. They say they had called me for a change of appointments but I looked back at my call log and voicemail log (which I never delete) and nothing. I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt and assume they were but forgot. If you get Dr. Penrose by all means I would recommend this place, but also just be cautious. read more

I hate anyone getting near my eyes, my whole body tenses up. No matter how hard I try, my body won't cooperate so they have to pry my eye open. Consequently I put off surgery way too long. Dr. Penrose and everyone at Eye MD were kind and patient with me and got me through the surgery accommodating my quirks. I could never thank them enough! But here is THE BEST PART, I went from not being able to tell how many fingers someone was holding up six feet away to 20/15 distance vision AND I can read fine print! read more

During this extended relationship, my experience has been nothing less than amazing. He and his entire staff operate at the highest level of professionalism with a constant focus on the relationship with their patients. Discussions about eye health and options for vision correction can be as detailed as you would like them to be and they are always managed at a pace and language that the patient is comfortable with and can easily understand. The reason I am rating this place with ONE star it's because of the billing issue that they are having me to go through. I have Tricare West and VSP insurance. I went to Eye MD Monterey at Ryan Ranch for routine check up so I can update my glasses prescriptions. The front desk, the doctor, and the technician who helped me ordering my glasses were all so nice and helpful! On the day of the exam, the doctor noticed my eyes were a little red, I told her I have seasonal allergy and sometimes my eyes get itchy, red, and watery when its bad. She put a note on my paper. I paid $15 at checkout since they said they were going to use my VSP, even though Tricare covers one routine eye exam yearly. This is how the nightmare started - I received an outstanding bill stating that I owe and I noticed the office billed tricare. First, I called the billing office at Eye MD and I believe the person who I talked to on the phone was Lily. She told me it was billed under "medical condition" and she asked me if I had referral from my PCM, I told her I went in for routine check up and I was told the office is going to bill my VSP. Then she told me that VSP won't cover it since I have a medical condition and she told me to call tricare or call my PCM to get a referral then she can resubmit to Tricare. I told the billing lady at Eye MD, she needs to recode it and resubmit. She refused it because she kept on telling me that I received a diagnosis. She told me there is NOTHING she can do to change it! I even told Lily, the billing person at Eye MD, that's NOT right that they are UPCODING, which it's fraud!! I called tricare and explained the whole thing, the representative called and spoke to Lily, the Rep told me that Lily was doing the exact thing and kept on telling her I was diagnosed with " conjunctivitis due to seasonal allergies" therefore, it needs to be billed as "medical condition" the rep was on the phone with her for almost an hour and explaining everything. PLEASE EDUCATE YOUR STAFF and bill the insurance correctly! If I had known the amount time and trouble that I have to go through with the billing issue, I would've stayed away from this place! read more

Had my 1st visit here today and everything was so easy. The front desk was helpful and friendly. The doctor took me back and was professional and chatty. He told me some info about my vision and what to expect for the future. And then I went back out to the waiting room to see about new glasses. Thats when the magic happened!!!!! I love getting new glasses and the Gal that helped me was awesome. Just made it so easy, she knew her product and what would look good on me. Was honest when something didn't work and helped me narrow it down. She was enthusiastic and felt like an old friend.(I wish I remember her name I was just to excited). Disappointed. Received my glasses and they failed to clean the groove for my lens replacement. When I wanted to give them some feed back I got a snide remark. " You wanted the lens company to clean the groove on your frames." Not good. I spent 185.00 on new lenses. read more

I can't say enough about these doctors. They discovered an optic nerve issue I had when everyone else missed it. Without sounding overly dramatic, this may have saved my life. Dr Penrose's caring attention to detail was very comforting and his follow up was above and beyond the call of duty. A great doctor. Subsequent to this I have been back and been fitted for contacts. Once again I had the feeling that I was receiving special attention. In a world where we are getting used to being "processed", this makes them special. A few weeks ago, I developed a bizarre growth on my caruncle that presented no pain, oozing, itching, vision problems or pain. I consulted with a family MD who all but advised she was clueless as to what it was and suggested I visit an optometrist (and wouldn't refer me to an M.D. because she wasn't alarmed.) Being the "multi-tasker" (alarmist) that I am, I visited Dr. Rodriguez at Eye MD during my weekend trip to the coast who quickly diagnosed me and put my mind at ease. His "refractor"-side manner was serene and he was a terrific walker-through, and the office staff was meticulous. I can't commend them for their short-notice help enough. read more

It all starts at the top and his staff and assistants share the same ability to make you feel relaxed knowing you are receiving the best care possible. After my cataract surgery I was reassured that the surgery went well and all was healing normally. First of all, this review is about the Cass St. location, where I have been going for 11 years, and the doctors are great. The 1-star rating is based on an experience I had yesterday with a particular front office staff member (sorry, I don't remember her name). If you don't mind dealing with an antagonistic distrustful receptionist, then please, by all means, ignore this review. Then again, the same great doctors are available at the Ryan Ranch location, where I hear the front office staff is very pleasant, friendly, and service-minded (my husband goes there), and it's not that far away, so why not just go there? The appointment I had yesterday was a rescheduling from a prior appointment that I didn't make it to. I was 5 minutes late for the prior appointment, and the receptionist called me as I was driving there and insisted that I reschedule due to lateness, which was fine, although I would have gotten there within a minute. I totally accepted that, and that's not the issue at all. The issue began upon my arrival (15 minutes early) for my appointment yesterday, when the receptionist tried to charge me $50 for a refraction. I told her my insurance covers refraction. My insurance covers refraction in full. Immediately she did not believe me and took on a tone like she thought I was trying to get out of paying what was owed. She told me to call my employer's HR department to confirm coverage. So I sat in the waiting room making phone calls for several minutes. I called three HR personnel, and each one was away from their desk. Finally, after my employer's switchboard operator told me the HR personnel were in a meeting, I called the customer service line on the back of my insurance card. (Which the receptionist could have easily done herself. Am I mistaken in my thinking that her position in a medical office is that of customer service, which would include making a phone call to confirm coverage?) I was placed on hold for a while before a representative confirmed that my insurance does indeed fully cover refraction. When I relayed the confirmation from the representative to the receptionist, she received the news with an expression of further disbelief and replied, "If your insurance doesn't cover refraction, we will bill you." As if I hadn't just told her my insurance covers refraction, several times, as confirmed by a representative from my insurance company. As if I had been faking the phone calls she just witnessed for several minutes. I don't know why she told me to make the calls if she didn't find me credible anyway. Don't worry, lady, I'm going to pay what I owe, as I have been for 11 years. Again, I have seen various doctors at the Cass St. location through the years (lately it's been Dr. Sablad, who is fantastic), and they have all been great, so I admit I may be low-balling this office due to the unpleasantness of the receptionist being fresh on my mind. I don't recall meeting her before yesterday, and who knows how long she'll be there. But I don't appreciate being treated like a liar and a thief, especially as a longtime patron. If, as a matter of protocol, you want me to shell out $50 upfront and go through the hassle of submitting a claim to my insurance company to get reimbursed, when I know for a fact that my insurance fully covers it (and you are going to bill my insurance company anyway for other services), then there are more tactful diplomatic ways to get me to agree to it. I am going to the Ryan Ranch location from now on. read more

Today was my first visit to the office and the entire staff was friendly and accomodating. I arrived two hours early due to a scheduling conflict and they was gracious enough to fit me in. The frontdesk took care of business, the person that assists with frames discussed those with me and the doctor and their assistant were marvelous. By for it was the best experience I have ever received at any office of this kind! I cannot say enough about how well I was treated and how they went above and beyond to ensure that my needs or concerns were meet to my level. You simply cannot ask for more. If your looking for a full service eye care facility this is the one you NEED! read more

It was my first visit and from my first initial contact to receiving the results of my eye exam everything about Dr. Sablad and her caring professionalism and her staff, including Loretta who made my first visit memorable from my first phone conversation with her to my last conversation the day of my appointment was extremely caring and warm...something that is rare these days in professional settings...which was truly refreshing and most welcomed. Great experience with Dr. Sablad. I went for a long over due eye check up, and she was very accommodating, thorough, and explained each step of the exam as we went along. I have been using the same old prescription for contact lenses and glasses while I lived abroad, and Dr. Sablad found that my eye shape has slightly changed, and described the pros and cons of all toric lenses available for me to choose from (2 week vs 1 month, comfort, breathability, etc). I got an updated prescription for both contacts and glasses, and I can see more clearly with the new contacts. Dr. Sablad is both knowledgeable and friendly... and she helped me to sort out the payment by my health insurance (since I don't have separate eye coverage). Highly recommend! read more

The doctor that usually sees me is really nice but doesn't really know what they are doing. The staff there is only nice to you when they need to. Other times they very rude especially when you are talking to them on the phone. One of the worst places ever. read more

While driving all the way from Santa Cruz County to the Eye MD office in Monterey, a staffer called to cancel my appointment on a Friday due to an "emergency," resulting in no doctors in the office. What transparent bullshit! Two doctors on a Friday wanted three -day weekends! No apology was made. Professional Exceptional Service My friend recently had an exam with Dr. Sablad and as I was in need of an exam, highly recommended her to me. I went to the Cass Street location, convenient parking, nice office staff. I actually went at the wrong time as my appointment and they accommodated me! Dr. Sablad was excellent! The office got me right in for an appointment when I had something in my eye that was very irritating. Dr. Sablad examined me, removed the small piece of metal from my eye very quickly (and painlessly), and explained everything very thoroughly. She was very friendly and knowledgeable, did not rush anything, and showed lots of concern for my condition. She even saw me the next day during her lunch break to fit me in for a checkup. I've been to both the Ryan Ranch and Cass St. locations. Dr. Sablad is very friendly and accommodating. She answered all my questions and gave great advice when trying to select which type of contacts would be the most comfortable and corrective to improve my eyesight. Due to my work schedule, it is difficult to make any medical/check-up appointments in the 8-5 window. She offered to stay a little late so I could come after work to test out my new contacts. Awesome! Cass St. staff is very friendly. Happy I tried this place and will continue to visit them for all my eye needs in the future. read more

This place destroyed two of my favorite glasses frames. Yes, I know: they tell you upfront that they can't be held liable if frames they didn't sell you break in the lab. But still, they're destroyed, and I can't help but wonder if someone with a bit more care wouldn't have broken them. read more
