I cannot believe I'm raving about my hearing aids but, after answering a survey from Consumer Reports, I realize how lucky I am. I had an unusual hearing loss situation whereby I departed an airplane and my right ear popped and my left ear did not. After a few hours my left ear popped and I immediately heard a "roaring" in my left ear which has not departed in over 15 years (a 24/7 delight). The sound changes frequencies as well as loudness which is unusual. I've seen many different specialists and researchers (I'm in Los Angeles) and I've had MRIs with contrast and every possible test. After 3 or 4 different purchases of hearing aids (which were not acceptable for various reasons) by which time I said, "Forget it" and gave up on accessing better hearing. My ENT hired a wonderful AU.D (Dr. Rachel Abucasis) who convinced me to "try again" and she spent a LOT of time and energy helping me find and fit the latest hearing aids. I now love being able to hear music via my iPhone, and being able to have complete conversations on the phone (without having to ask, "Excuse me? I didn't get that.", and, with the little box that I can put on any dining or conference table, I can hear all of the conversation from each person. As for the hearing aids being visible, with so many options I can even wear my hair in a ponytail and no one realizes I am wearing hearing aids. And I should add that these are so comfortable that I often forget I'm wearing them. I wish I could tell everyone suffering with hearing loss to not give up. read more

Well, both my hubby and I thought this was a one and done fix to his better hearing. Not exactly. He's angry that we spent the bare bones we, or rather what he, thought we could afford on devices that failed to fit his uniquely narrow ear canals. I'm angry that he failed to wear the devices (replaced with different ones, three times to no improvement, so he says) sufficiently to make the necessary brain/auditory connection. "I don't want to lose them on the street and I only want to hear you at home." (Too bad I'm not closed captioning speech friendly.) You sure you want to hear me cuz you ain't gonna like what I have to say! Neighborhood fitness walk and he didn't hear a non-EV vehicle exiting from a garage. If I hadn't been with him... Not ready to be a widow. Dr. Rachel has been, as the people on my Mother's side say, a real "mensch," negotiating with device providers, implementing her expertise, to make these budget devices work. I'm hoping for a satisfactory low end device adjustment but I'm willing to tap into my savings for an appropriate upgrade because I'm beginning to be deafened by TV news at volume 54 and blank looks when I speak directly in his face. *** I have suffered from tinnitus for decades. *** Yet in recent years, the ringing has seemed louder. So my doc told me to check here for a hearing loss. Staff is polite and saw me just 5 mins after check-in. My hearing test revealed that I'm both blessed and cursed bc the ringing frequency in my ears is same as most women's voices. Therefore the next time a woman tells me that I am ignoring her, I can simply say "naw baby, I just got a hearing impairment that prevents me from listening to your bullsh!t". Pacific Hearing was recommended by an ENT doctor. And Julie Skille, the audiologist I saw there, is the best! Easy to talk to, kind, patient, knowledgeable, smart, accessible, and always helpful. I wish all my medical practitioners were like her! On my first visit, I had to have my hearing evaluated by someone else, then make a follow-up appointment to actually try out hearing aids. I was a little bummed about having to come back, but when I returned and met Skille, she immediately put me at ease. My only real complaint is the physical space itself, which is a maze of tiny windowless rooms & somewhat claustrophobic. But again, meeting with Julie Skille made the whole unnerving experience of getting my very first hearing aids a surprising pleasure. Highly recommended! read more

Clearly know what they are doing! Testing is thorough for sure. Everyone nice. But parking is horrible. The parking garage is claustrophobic and you must leave keys. When I didn't want to leave my keys I had to leave. Searched the area for parking and it took 20 minutes and a mile away. Oh well got some steps in. I was very impressed by the audiologist, Kathy. I was also happy with a woman in the billing department named Susana who was most helpful. My insurance provided coverage for the hearing aids for both ears, but they only covered one initially - then quickly corrected the problem. Even though I had paid in full for the aids up front, someone in management there at Pacific fought sending me the insurance refund for the second aid. It was finally worked out there internally but when I finally received the payment, there was a rude handwritten note attached by the person in management. I wrote in protest to the rudeness and was ignored. Unless it gets straightened out, I won't use Pacific again. read more

My 14-year-old hearing aids suddenly broke on me Jan 26th. I have new insurance so I wasn't sure how to go about getting new ones, but I'm deaf so I need my hearing aids to work, etc. I frantically looked for hearing aid dealers nearby and noticed that the Pacific Hearing website mentioned my insurance. I (incorrectly) assumed my insurance would be fine referring me to Pacific. I made an appointment asap, they were incredibly accommodating, getting me in for an emergency appointment. I emailed my insurance information ahead and my referral from my insurance was still pending at the time of the appointment. Lesly was super kind throughout the whole initial appointment process. At the appointment Dr. Shalom was understanding of my situation. We started with a hearing test and then sat down to go over my options. She let me know she'd send my broken hearing aid for repair, that it'd be $400 if Starkey fixed it. In the meantime she was able to loan me a pair of demo hearing aids (ReSound ENZO Q 98), that would allow me to return to work and also test out a pair that I might buy. The initial quote for the ENZO Q 98's was $7800/each. I mentioned this being much more expensive than I would be able to afford and Dr. Shalom assured that I shouldn't worry about it I had time to decide on the hearing aids later. The last thing we did at the appointment was take impressions for new ear molds and they sent me on my way. I was absolutely reeling at the prospect of paying almost $16,000 for a pair of hearing aids, but I knew I still needed to wait for my insurance. Dr. Shalom followed up to check in with me about what my insurance determined. My insurance process got messy, but eventually my insurance company wouldn't approve the hearing aids from Pacific Hearing, only their contracted vendor, Arcade Hearing. I made an appointment with Arcade after about a month and asked for the exact same pair I'd been demo-ing. They quoted me at $3100/each ($6200/pair) for the exact same pair of hearing aids. I opted to just order them through Arcade as my insurance would also cover $2000. Arcade asked if I wanted ear molds, but I'd already gotten them at Pacific so I decided against it. I did ask Arcade how much they'd be in case I wanted more than one pair of molds and they quoted me at $85. In the meantime I was still using the demo hearing aids. I emailed Dr. Shalom to ask if my broken hearing aid and ear molds had come in and they did so I had my appointment this morning. I let her know that I bought the hearing aids through Arcade. She let me know that since I wasn't buying hearing aids through them I'd have to pay for the molds, as expected. I didn't expect them to be $200, but I know molds are custom made so I didn't feel comfortable contesting the price. Starkey did manage to fix my old hearing aid, so I paid the $400 for that as well. Overall I'm of mixed feelings. Dr. Shalom and the entire office staff were very nice and accommodating. Their willingness to loan me the demo-hearing aids for a month allowed me to continue living my life uninterrupted and go back to work was so appreciated. However, the stark price difference really catches me off guard. Although Dr. Shalom mentioned efforts to try and get a low out of pocket price, the initial quote seems inaccessible for a lot of people. Not everyone can afford medical devices and not all insurance companies help subsidize them. As always I do encourage anyone looking for medical devices to shop around a bit and compare prices. read more

I'm reluctant to write this as I don't like putting negative energy out there, but I'm surprised by the customer service at this office, specifically from one of the doctors. I had opted to try out their hearing aids and was pushed to "order" them and go through insurance during my month-long demo. The idea was to charge insurance and see how much they would actually pay. I decided at the end of the trial to not get them. The doctor promptly confirmed via email that they would cancel the order and return the insurance money. After a month, I decided to follow up with insurance, and they didn't get a notice from the office. I called the biller, and they noted that the doctor didn't tell them I was canceling. I emailed the doctor, and her response was rude and accusatory - blaming the customer for not following up earlier. There was no apology or concern that their customer had to deal with this frustrating issue, even though it was clearly someone on their end who dropped the ball, costing me weeks to get that money returned. If I hadn't followed up, they never would have caught their mistake, and that's a sign of a badly managed office. It's ok to make mistakes. It's not okay to turn it on the customer and not admit any wrongdoing or sympathy. Her response comes off as defensive and full of bad will. I'm glad she showed her true face to this customer, as I am relieved I decided to go with another company: no grace, no customer service, no kindness or understanding. I will not be going back here and suggest that anyone who wants a friendly partner to work with when trying to improve their hearing go somewhere else! read more

Coming in for a reoccurrence of tinnitus, Dr. Arevalo patiently listened to all my descriptions of symptoms, then conducted a battery of hearing tests to determine if any frequencies were below optimum. Afterwards, we discussed possible ways to improve my experience, including breathing and mindfulness techniques. As my tinnitus was not severe and seemed to be improving over time, we eliminated use of some devices while reserving the option of hearing aids to boost misusing frequencies. All in all, I'm extremely impressed with Jesse Arevalo's skill and empathy. Also the office staff and setting are bright and professional. read more

I had a great experience with a hearing check up due to clogging in my right ear. Very thorough hearing check and nice technician. Parking is terrible, please note. I found a metered street spot a few blocks away which was fine, but note that you will need to leave extra time for parking if you want to arrive on time for your appointment. read more

Doctors at this location have been, kind, informative and helpful in explaining plan of care. The front desk, though friendly, are not well organized. There is a sense of chaos upon entry which seems to carry through until you are called back to see your doctor. Parking in the building is NOT recommended. Expensive, not validated and complicated to understand where exactly you are allowed to park. Attendants in the garage may or may not be of help. If you know you're appointment will be under two hours, find street parking. read more

This is how great the staff here is: the doctor kept me waiting 40 minutes, but i still gave them 5 stars! First, Cecily at the front desk is about as good a medical receptionist/coordinator as anyone could hope for: knowledgeable, efficient, and friendly. And then, Dr. Anwar is probably one of the most pleasant and articulate doc's you'll ever meet. Also very straightforward about the pro's and con's of treatment and what my condition was. The second after canceling I asked for Courtney and they said she was busy all month. Frustrated I asked for an unknown. Next day I went to my scheduled appt. with Dr. Doyle.
