I got a helix piercing here. The piercer said he had two months of experience....not a great start…read morebut that's ok everyone has to learn. So then he marks the spot with a ball point pen....mmkay. Again, never seen that before. Usually use a surgical marker. Then the lineup. Piercing didn't hurt more than expected. Fine, I tipped healthy ($10). Two hours later, I look down and my shirt is covered in blood. Weird. But whatever, just trying to be positive. Well this morning I wake up and the damn jewelry is gone. I've had at least 11 piercings in my face and I have NEVER had jewelry just unscrew. Call the shop, they think that maybe me cleaning with q tip and rolling in bed caused the ball to roll loose. WHAT? I'm sorry but this is seriously the most foolish thing I've ever heard. The piercer needs to tighten the hell out of that ball (threaded ball on a post). So then he says he won't refund me. Eh? Ok so what is the solution? He wants to slide another piece of jewelry in. Yeah, nah dude. I've never had an experience like this. I guess I'm just going to have to lose $40 and tip. Do yourself a favor, skip this shop.

Well now I have it. I know what I want to do. But it seems to me that the design, along with the personalization that I wanted my be a little complicated. I went in to the shop to have a little impromptu consultation. I met Rockwood and his wife Becky. They were both awesome. I brought my concerns to Rockwood's attention and he confidently told me that if he couldn't do it, it couldn't be done!!! The next thing I know, Rockwood has imported my artwork into his iPad, he re-drew (not just traced - redrew) the picture. While I stood there he embedded the writing into the artwork, which he then superimposed onto a picture of my arm so I could get a feel for how it would look on my arm. I was so impressed. He basically completely changed the design I brought him to something amazing and he incorporated the writing into the design. I came in for my appointment and Rockwood and Becky were amazing. Everything was kept clean and sanitary. Rockwood has lots of stories to tell and even had some friends come around to tell me stories about Rockwood. Once the tattoo was done I was so impressed with how clear the lines are and how detailed the design is. When I'm ready for my next tattoo I'm definitely going back to Big Island Tattoo to see Rockwood and Becky.

I got a small flash tattoo here today with Kyle for $100 and unfortunately had a really…read moredisappointing experience. I feel sick to my stomach looking at the result. I chose a simple turtle from their flash sheet, but the final result doesn't match the reference at all. The linework is very messy and shaky in places, shading looks uneven, lines are blown out and it overall does not really resemble the flash at all. It looks horrible and so poorly done. This is by far the worst tattoo I have ever gotten. My boyfriend was supposed to get one after me and we had to make up an excuse to leave.. that's how bad it was. I wasn't going to let him get tattooed like this too. I understand that no tattoo will be an exact copy of flash, but I expected cleaner and similar execution, especially for such a small and simple piece. Overall, I'd recommend taking extra care when booking and making sure you're confident in the artist for fine line work. I should've taken the fact they didn't ask our age, didn't check ID, didn't make us fill out any paperwork and the fact they were chugging beer while tattooing as a red flag. Please be wary as I now unfortunately have to find a new artist to cover up this disaster that I got an hour ago.

I only had a few days left in Kona and while we were walking around the shops, I stumbled across Voodoo tattoo and stopped in to see if they possibly had any availability for the next day (still having no idea what I actually wanted). Lions greeted me and said they did have availability so I went ahead and got on the schedule. He told me to just email him some photos of inspo of what I wanted that night and we'd be good to go. After racking my brain for a few hours, I decided I'd like a little tiki guy to commemorate my amazing Hawaii visit. I sent him a pic of what I liked and we were in business! When I arrived, he was just finishing up a sketch of my tattoo. He made it his own a bit by switching up some details and asked if I wanted a tiki girl since he could easily give it a coconut bra. I was all about it. I wanted it in color and with a little input, let him decide on the colors since he's the artist. The tattoo took about 1 1/2 - 2 hours but it flew by with good conversation. My boyfriend originally wasn't going to stay the entire time with me but ended doing so. We all just chatted the whole time about everything and by the end, felt like we had made a new friend. I couldn't be more stoked on my new tattoo and believe both the art, and the fond memories I have of the experience with Lions are such a good representation of my visit to Hawaii!
