PMA is a wonderful family operated martial arts studio that our son went to for a few years. Their classes were flexible and accommodating with our schedule. They do not focus on making sure you do everything perfectly, but more on how much effort and enthusiasm and understanding you have towards everything you do and learn. There is low-pressure to belt test - they encourage it when you think you're ready and if you've practiced for the required amount of time. Sensei Knight and his senpais were great - very patient and encouraging. My son never felt like it was competitive either. Pacific Martial Arts is an absolutely outstanding dojo by every measure. My two daughters started here about 2 1/2 years ago when they were 3 and 5, and they have thrived under Sensei Knight's instruction and guidance. We have been extremely happy with the changes that we've seen in them since they started. Training has clearly improved their focus, confidence, and determination, especially their ability to work through adversity. I judge martial arts studios (and instructors) most of all by their senior students, and Sensei Knight has helped to shape some truly exceptional young practitioners. Although they are confident, focused, and skilled fighters, every one of them maintains an air of humility and an eagerness to help the lower belts and each other. There is a strong sense of comradery among them that is enviable. My children have tremendously benefited not only from Sensei Knight's direct instruction, but also these excellent role models who are so generous with their time and knowledge. The teaching is of traditional, authentic Japanese martial arts (mostly Karate, along with seamlessly integrated Jiu-Jitsu, Aikido, etc), but presented in a highly innovative and well thought-out manner for each level and age. It's very difficult to meaningfully teach younger children in traditional martial arts, but Sensei Knight perfectly walks the line between "full on monkey house" and "Cobra-Kai". He holds them to high, age appropriate standards of behavior and discipline, but does it without squashing their spirit or personalities. His background in child psychology is apparent in his intentional, step-wise approach to building up and empowering the students with progressive leadership roles and responsibilities. He actually wrote his thesis on the benefits of child development through martial arts training. I was a pretty serious student of various martial arts in the late 80's and 90's, but had completely stopped more than 20 years ago due to injuries and studies. My cheeky daughters kept pressuring me to take classes again, and when I protested, told me "You always tell us to push ourselves and not be afraid to do our best. Are you going to show us how to do it?". After being thusly shamed into taking classes again, my love and appreciation for the martial arts was rekindled, and my own fitness and general well-being have improved as well. I am incredibly grateful for the new, special connection that I am able to share with my kids through this true "Family Dojo" (at least when I am not chugging down Tylenol and Motrin to recover from classes). I have been in and observed many martial arts studios across the country, and Pacific Martial Arts stands out as a rare gem. While the self-defense teaching is extremely well done, it is their approach to personal and physical development that impresses me the most. Our 2 kids (now 5 and 6 y.o.) have been learning with Mr. Knight for almost 2 years now. They started in Mini Ninjas and quickly adapted to the Ninja curriculum (designed for 6+). We noticed our kids becoming more confident in the way they carry themselves around their peers. A huge plus! The kids are always excited to attend Mr. Knight's classes; they often practice at home while watching his youtube channel. My kids also had Miss Pappinaeau prior in the Altadena dojo; they love learning from her as well. There are 2 tournaments during the year. My kids always get excited watching the older kids competing. They aspire to be like them, and we have no problem with that. Mr. Knight have been very flexible in accomodating our family's schedule, given we commute from Altadena during traffic hours. We appreciate that and can't thank him enough. read more

My son started off as a mini ninja three years and now I see how the fun animal noises and games have helped him progress with his karate practice. The instructors are incredibly patient and knowledgeable. It's nice that we start off with one day a week and now two days a week. Even after a long day at school and over an hour commute during the school week, my son is always ready to bow upon entering the dojo for his class. There're opportunities for kids to grow by helping their peers in class too. There is a balance of discipline and social emotional growth because of Mr. Knight's background. Give this dojo a try for at least 6 months. It takes time for kids to acclimate to such a different kind of activity. As a secondary teacher, I know how much Pacific Martial Arts is beneficial to the mind and body of our young students. I know it helps my 7yo! read more

We have this place a try but we found the mini ninja class was not truly tailored to 4 year olds. The class was thought as if the kids were at the developmental age where they could easily follow instructions and learn the moves and the Japanese words right away. There was little to no coaching on how to perform the moves properly. I would have liked to see the instructor go around adjusting them and spending some one on one time coaching. There was lack of a consistent routine in order to help the kids learn the moves and the words. Every class was different and different words and moves were being introduced randomly. It seemed like most kids were totally lost and thus began to do what 4 year old do, shenanigans. Mr Knight appeared to be easily annoyed whenever the kids did not follow the instructions every time and exactly how they were told but you can't expect that from any 4 year old. While i completely understand the discipline behind martial arts one cannot ignore the developmental stages of children and if a class is offered to a certain age group, the instructor should know the best way to keep the students engaged and retain their attention. The kids were scolded constantly for not following a complex and inconsistent program. I submitted feedback but did not receive a response. I was wished luck instead. read more

This place USED to be great. Sadly like most things all good things come to an end. It's one of those situations where it used to be about real craft, community, respect, and all the real things that make up the art and sacredness of Karate. Not anymore. This place went sideways the way many places do when it becomes all about profit. The Teachers are not real teachers but young 20 something's that are quickly moved thru a 'certification process. ' unqualified to teach in my opinion. They push belt testing that cost the parents money and the kids are not really ready or qualified to pass- but they pass them anyways. The parents and families used to all be very social and connected part of a community but because there is such a disconnect with the owner and 'sensai' Mr. Knight. The parents are all cancelling membership and starting to discontinue services. We have been members for over 3 years our son who is 8 started around 5 years old. Our son because the teachers are unqualified and unenthusiastic and in a failing community wanted to quit karate. We tried to officially give notice and quit. Waited while the owner was on the phone 30 mins after his sat morn class. He never got off the phone. We left because we had to but emailed to let them Know our concerns. A few days later they charged our account. For the month. $140.00 I tried to talk to several people - Especially both owners Asking to to be be reimbursed They wouldn't even consider it. The time our son has been attending Pacific Martial Arts we have helped out in anyway we could. My husband is a contractor and was always helping our At this dojo for FREE as never charged. Always for free. We brought a ton of new people to join and always did our part as a Contributing family. Sad that this place isn't operating as it should with the highest integrity anymore. We are gone. And after all that time and energy spent there not one person checked In to see what might have gone wrong etc. or tried to remedy the situation in any way. My son did not spend a lot of time at this dojo. He was only enrolled about 5 months, but all 5 months spent there were spectacular. Mr. Knight has done a fantastic job creating an environment where both Karate and life skills are taught simultaneously. My daughter started at Pacific Martial Arts when she was 7. We were looking for an activity that would help with focus, discipline, as well as, physical activity. We had heard of PMA through word of mouth, and our daughter was hooked from the first class. I think what makes PMA different is Mr Knight's background in sociology. It seems he uses that knowledge to relate more nuanced aspects of karate (e.g. focus, respect, discipline) to young kids instead of just focusing on the physical training. My daughter is now 10, just past her 3rd year and is a green belt. Finding anything that a 7 year old kid is interested in doing, year-round, for 3 years is pretty rare, but the zeal she has for karate has only grown. I see it in the other kids around her age and skill level, too. They all have a friendship and respect for each other, and toward other students both younger and older, that makes me a proud parent of a PMA kid. I am happy that PMA is expanding and hopefully more kids will be exposed, not only to karate , but to the support and friendships my daughter has gotten from students and teachers alike at PMA. My 9 year old son just started karate here and it was incredible to watch the way these classes are structured. Classes are set up with mixed belt levels which means kids not only learn off the teacher but also learn from eachother and have opportunities to lead and practice stewardship towards the newer members. Sensi Knight has a great balance of patience and authority and it's clear the kids respect him in the most positive of ways. There are so many things I like about Pacific Martial that I don't know where to start. I was looking for a place where I could do martial arts together with my son, you know, the real thing, not just some "karate babysitting". Low and behold, when I took my husband to show him the place where I wanted to sign up, my husband was really interested, and the whole family signed up! So glad I have found something that my husband likes, too. The style that is practiced there, Washin Ryu, translates to "style in harmony with nature", and the name is appealing to me. The students have a sense of community and we are taught to give everyone a sense of dignity and worth, assist new students, and treat all people with respect and tolerance, yet we learn to kick and punch, should anyone dare to attack. I could go on and on about the positives: self defense, cardio, body toning, community, manners and discipline. Just do yourself a favor and get your behind over there. My son started taking karate here in the fall of 2015. He struggles with attention and sensory issues, and we were looking for a place that would help him build positive relationships with his fellows and adult teachers, would teach him a skill set that he could be proud of, and would work his active mind and body in a disciplined way. I'd heard good things about PMA and Mr. Knight's psychology background from a mom's list I'm on and we embarked. It's really cool to watch a 5-year old enter a dojo and set aside enough of his own issues - his chattering monkeys - to tackle whatever the workout is. The teachers (I'm calling out Ms. Roseen, Ms. Edwards and Ms. Reed here because we have had the most experience with them, though I admire them all) are really in tune with the mood of the class and are great at figuring out ways to get all those wiggly bodies to focus. Classic karate stances, moves and drills are folded into games and stories. They also practice a structured protocol which helps them remember the rules of the dojo and teaches them to respect the teachers, themselves and each other. My son has also been to two AWESOME weeklong martial arts daycamps at PMA. Each day has a different theme: Japanese monsters, ninja vs. samurai, superheroes, etc. There were arts and crafts peppered in with martial arts workouts and cultural activities, and the awesome teens mentioned by Ethan S. are on hand to help wrangle and inspire. Now my son can instruct me on the finer points of making a sushi roll! He was having so much fun I started taking the family karate class there 7 months ago. I am thrilled to be learning a new practice for my mind and body, and any time I have the pleasure of a makeup class with Mr. Knight it's mind-expanding. There are a few things I have done for my boys that felt like true lifelong gifts and the gift of Karate at PMA with Mr. Knight is at the top of that very short list. Mrs. Knight arrived at the dojo with a car full of drinks for the party. Mr. Knight stopped the lesson, had the boys put on their shoes, walked them out to Mrs. Knight's car, introduced them to Mrs. Knight (demonstrating proper etiquette - which means so much more coming from him than me!!) and showed them how to offer help. After my boys brought in the drinks, they were asked to go back out to make sure Mrs. Knight didn't need any further assistance, then they came back in, took their shoes off and went back to their lesson. This dojo doesn't just teach karate, it supports the teaching that we as parents try to provide our children on how to be good citizens & decent humans. It teaches them how to be respectful to all people, how to work as a team, how to support & praise others and not be boastful of personal achievements. It reinforces being thoughtful, mindful and aware of those around us. It teaches us to be our best and by doing so, we can achieve anything we strive for. Pacific Martial Arts is definitely more than a place to exercise in white pajamas (as head instructor Jason Knight has jokingly described karate). Never once have we had to cajole our three kids--currently ages 3 to 11--to get ready for their classes, or for the family class we attend on the weekend. That weekly group session has brought us closer together in unexpected ways (maybe not so unexpected, actually, given Mr. Knight's background in family therapy). Karate has been great for the kids' confidence and focus, and it's something they can help each other (and their dad) with at home, too. The super-cool teenagers who often help out with younger children's classes are wonderful examples of the character the dojo helps build. Mr. Knight and the rest of the staff are incredibly dedicated and considerate, especially when it comes to helping kids set and accomplish goals. Perhaps their most impressive achievement is the warm and supportive community they've fostered among the families. (The only weird thing is that because of the formal karate protocol followed at the dojo, you tend to know most people, even little kids, as "Mr. This" or "Ms. That." But it's actually kind of fun.) My 4-year old daughter has been enrolled in the Mini Ninja class for almost 6 months. She at first reluctantly went only to be with her best friend but now she is excited to go and is even showing her baby brother some of her "moves" at home (monkey blocks are her favorite!). The thing that stands out to me is that I've noticed how her participation in the Mini Ninja class has actually helped build her discipline and in particular her listening skills. She is now much more attentive when she's in some of her other classes and at school. The classes are fun for the kids but I really think they have been great in laying a foundation of self awareness and discipline for all aspects of her growth and development. The classes have also become a great connecting point for parents as well AND for students who have younger siblings, there is a nice fenced area for the little ones to safely romp around while we wait for the class the end. I took my daughter to her first mini ninja class recently, and she loved it! Ms. Kapp was her instructor, and my daughter really connected with her and was laughing and enjoying herself the whole time. Ms. Kapp was kind and direct with the children, and it's great to have a female karate teacher as a role model for my daughter. She can't wait to go to her next class! The facility is very soothing, and there is a patio where the parents can sit, socialize, and watch the class. I met a few nice parents out there, and the owner made it a point to come out and talk to me, which was nice. Our 5-year old son has been attending (Mini Ninja) classes at Pacific Martial Arts in Glassell Park for over 6 months. We brought him in for an initial meeting and assessment with the owner/instructor Mr. Knight and signed him up on-the-spot and have been very happy here. Prior to this, we'd been driving to the valley for our son to take classes elsewhere; we'd not found a place nearby for kids that was a good fit till this place. Some reasons that we are fans of Pacific Martial Arts: - Our son is always excited to attend his mini ninja classes. - He gets a fun and physical workout each session. - Karate is such a wonderful way for our son to work on his focus and listening skills. - Our mini ninja is proud to demonstrate that he can now count in Japanese. - The colored stripe tape system for the white belt mini ninjas is a good motivator, and he is looking forward to the next level (ninjas - age 6-9) where he can begin earning belts through tests. - The lessons he is learning here are lifelong skills. - The instructor (Mr. Knight) has a gentle approach, is great with the kids, and the kids respond well to his manner. - Occasionally a sempi (older karate-do student) assists in the class; the younger students seem to really enjoy having this additional role model to look up to and emulate. In fact, my son aspires to be a sempi (and eventually black belt) one day. - It is a great place for the karate-do kids and parents to connect. read more

My kids go to mini and micro-ninjas and they love it - the teachers are incredible role models and amazing at keeping a class of young kids engaged, learning and paying attention. The teachers model respect and patience when talking to students and each other. They have a really fun way of teaching karate fundamentals - my kids love it so much they take turns at home being karate teacher and student and they show that they are really learning and retaining so much. I appreciate how the teachers hold all of the kids to a high standard and clear rules but if a kid is losing focus their first instinct is to try to engage and include them, not punish them. I was visiting a friend in Los Angeles, and her son goes to Pacific Martial Arts, so I got to watch one of his classes. It's a nice studio, very spa like, not your typical gym like space. There were two classes going on at the same time, since it looks like they have two spaces in the plaza they're in, so there were a lot of kids! Parents were outside in a patio area chatting, and it seemed like everyone knew each other. I saw some of the students hugging the teachers, which was really sweet, and the head instructor, Mr. Knight, greeted us personally and talked to us after class. I thought that was really nice.
