I have been wanting a Polynesian style tattoo for awhile and I did my research before coming to the island for vacation. I ultimately chose this shop because the artists here are so talented. It was actually quite hard to narrow it down and choose which artist I wanted to do my ink - they're all crazy talented. But then I fell in love with a design I saw and I selected Brian and sent him an email to begin correspondence. When I arrived in Oahu I went by and we discussed what I wanted and I made and appointment and put down a deposit. My appointment was for Friday 2/9 at noon. Brian had drawn up the design for me that included the elements I asked for and it was even more beautiful than anything I had pictured. He managed to incorporate the ocean sunset design I loved, altered it to include flowers instead of leaves and he worked in the Polynesian element I wanted. He massively exceeded my expectations. The appointment was great. Brian is a skilled tattoo artist, he is very personable and I enjoyed talking with him as he used his 6-7 colors of black and grey to create my tattoo. I am very pleased with the result. Everything he used was new/disposable and he was meticulous in his care of keeping everything as clean and sterile as possible. I will just confirm what other reviewers have said. Su'ulape Steve is not bargain priced. He quoted me $175/hour. My tribal 6" wide arm band took 8 hours. 8 hours of Steve's intense focus and attention to fine detail. He rounded the total cost down to more like $125/hour. You can find less expensive tattoos, but I doubt that you can find a higher quality piece of body art. Steve is an artist, and he does free hand tribal designs, and the results are works of Pacific Island art. I am a 72 year old life-long surfer, and a first time tourist to Hawaii and I have fallen in love with Polynesian culture. I feel that my tattoo expresses that love and respect. I am so glad that I found Steve for a memorable tattoo experience. I was guided by Yelp reviews and I hope that my review will guide some true lovers of tattoo art to Steve's shop. read more

I'm writing a review today based on my shoulder piece that I got done in September 2018. This was the biggest tattoo I've ever gotten. Tbh it was meant to be a half sleeve but I decided to do the first half, then come back another time to finish the second half of my sleeve. Anyways, I know that Hawai'i has many great tattooists that can do tribal but I am so glad I chose to work with Sulu'ape Steve. His work is so clean with the straightest lines I've ever seen! He's great at what he does and I appreciate him for his work. I am Samoan and I wanted to get a Samoan tribal for the longest time. Steve is very knowledgeable and we were able to discuss the location of my piece and the design. The deposit was $100. I'm not gonna lie, the cost of my session pricey but absolutely worth it. From what I was told, all tribals are done by free hand. I was at first unsure but I put my trust into Steve and he did not fail to deliver! Steve gave me a contemporary Samoan tribal incorporating designs of the traditional women's tatau (the Malu). Hands Down the BEST tattoo shop I've ever been too... The entire experience was fantastic from start to finish. I don't know how they managed to squeeze me in on such short notice for the piece I wanted (this place came HIGHLY recommended by my buddy who is a regular both in Hawaii as well as during conventions on the mainland) & everything that I've heard about them is 100% true. What an awesome experience! Pacific Soul Tattoo is an awesome place to get a tattoo. Everything was clean and the staff are very friendly and helpful. I was lucky to have Paulo do my very first tattoo. I was a bit overwhelmed when deciding exactly what I wanted incorporated into my tattoo. I've always wanted a cherry blossom tattoo and thought a koi fish for luck would tie into the tattoo perfectly; but i didnt want the koi fish to overwhelm the cherry blossoms. So Paulo created a beautiful koi fish with lots of cherry blossoms which was exactly what I wanted! Paulo really balanced both images in such a beautiful way. Bottom line I will defiantly be seeing them again for my next tattoo! Might be a while though; that sucker hurt! But it was totally worth the pain! TIP: If you're not totally sure about what you want be sure to do a bit more research and bring a friend or two to your consultation. For me it really helped in deciding what worked best for me! I knew I wanted to get a polynesian tattoo during my trip to Honolulu. I did some yelping and I had two parlors suggested. I looked more into Pacific Soul and decided on this place based on the yelp reviews and portfolios posted on their site. I had an idea of what I wanted, I saw a certain design posted on Tahitian artist, Manu's site and brought that image into Pacific Soul. I was initially looking for Steven to do my piece but he was off and I was directed to Paulo. I showed Paulo the photo of what I wanted, and lo and behold, the photo I had was an actual work he did himself! Doh! Why didn't I read the credit on the photo lol he's associated with Manu! So I got super lucky to have Paulo do my piece! Paulo is hands down the best tattoo artist I've had the privilege to work on me, I have had 4 other tattoos prior to Paulo. He freehanded my tattoo and it was beyond what I had envisioned. I super duper love the work! His skills are ridiculous! His sketch and technique are both perfect. The shading is AMAZING. Although it hurt like a major b&**^%, I absolutely love the work. Very satisfied!! I would seriously go back and get more work done by him! I'm also surprised by how much I was charged, I really think his tattooing skills should have cost a lot more, but I guess I can't complain lol he's very humble by his works as well. I got my first tattoo done by Brian. Took me a while to find a place and find someone who I can trust...i mean well duh a tattoo is forever it has to be perfect. I met Brian through a girlfriend of mine and discovered his work through his Instagram. I was very impressed with his work and after careful consideration I contacted him. We had set up a consultation and we discussed what i wanted...he was able to answer all my questions and any concerns...he listened to my ideas and voiced his professional opinion and that made me feel at ease and very excited. After weeks of solid research, I came to the conclusion that I wanted to get my first tattoo with Pacific Soul Tattoo and specifically with Steve. When I called to schedule the appointment, it was easy for him to work me and my mom in the following week. Steve is a great professional tattoo artist. His line work is absolutely amazing! Went to see Brian today for my third tattoo. I got one with him a few weeks back and my friend got one with Brian as well. His work is amazing. His work is very detailed.. He talks with you to ensure you are getting what you really want and checks it over with you to ensure you are happy and know what you are getting. Today I got simple coordinates, but he didn't treat it like a simple tattoo. He confirmed my numbers three times and also showed me how my tattoo would move with my skin. The best thing to do is make an appointment for a consultation. There is no receptionist, so basically the artists answer the phone in between trying to tattoo their clients. Its a small operation, but it doesn't discredit their work. When you go to the shop there are a lot of books with photos of previous tattoos they have done. Paul is a genius at what he does, he will transfer your vision into a masterpiece. As they say, leave it to the professionals. read more

After reading other reviews, I went and checked this place out. I made an appointment with Brian, putting down a $50 deposit, and consulted with him about the tattoo I had in mind. He gave some great advice, and how big the tattoo should be so the lettering would be clear, how it would look over time, and what was realistic with the picture I brought as an example. As far as my appointment, Brian was METICULOUS. His station and tools were absolutely clean, and he took his time making everything was covered. He then took several tries to make sure the placement was straight, and had me check in the mirror with a stencil placement to see how I liked it. After all the trouble he went through, I decided I wanted the tat a little lower on my arm, and he went through the whole careful alignment process again. The tattoo came out great!
