My daughter and I discovered Skin Deep Tattoo the very first time she came with me to Hawaii, and that experience was hands-down 5 stars. We decided to return for another tattoo this trip. My daughter got a beautiful red flower (we knew red ink tends to fade faster), and I got a beach scene with palm trees. Both tattoos came out lovely, truly 5-star-worthy work. The reason for my 3-star review isn't about the artwork but the experience afterward. While my daughter was in the lobby, the staff were admiring her tattoo, which was nice to hear, but then the conversation turned to comments about how the red ink wouldn't last and other remarks that weren't so positive. We completely understand the nature of red ink and appreciate honesty, but it's not great to overhear that kind of discussion right after getting a tattoo. For many people, including us, tattoos often hold sentimental meaning, they represent moments, memories, and people close to our hearts, even if we don't always share that story out loud. So, a little extra sensitivity goes a long way. I hate leaving bad reviews but I'm really angry. I have no idea if they would have done a good job or not because I never got the tattoo. I came in SEVERAL days in advance to book an appointment. I am not a tattoo novice and have had many done. I arrived early for my appointment because I RESPECT people's time. I was informed by a VERY nice front desk person that they were running late due to my assigned artist taking a walk in. The was cool with that because she said it would be like 30-45 minutes. Over an hour later I asked again and she said at least another hour. I requested my deposit back because I felt super disrespected and at that point I don't want a tattoo by you. To me, tattoos are personal and I need to feel good about the person doing it. And I did not. I arrived early, and after a brief wait I signed in, and was able to chat with Jay about the design. I had contacted her on instagram and provided her with a couple of images I wanted to incorporate, so she was aware of what I was looking for, and was able to come up with a beautiful design that included personal meaning to me. The studio is clean, and they have shirts and artwork for sale as well. Everyone was very friendly and supportive of each other's work. Plus I overheard some consultations that were very clear and showed the level of experience they have, plus the pride for their work (not trying to sell anything to newbies but instead laying down expectations). I decide to get tattooed on my visit to the island. I had been wanting one from Jenn Matthews for soooo long but I finally had the opportunity. Jen is soooo GREAT at her work. I wanted one of her specialty Kewpie dolls and she did exactly what I wanted. Her lines are so sharp and color so vibrant. My wife and I both loved our experience with Skin Deep. We truly felt the Aloha spirit here. It was my wife's first tattoo, and my third, but by far biggest tattoo. We came in Sunday evening, spoke with a few people to discuss our ideas and they worked with us to set up appointments with the best artists for our designs on the following Friday. At the appointments the artists and everyone else at the shop were very friendly, patient, and overall fun. I had a great conversation with my artist, Ava, we had plenty of time to get acquainted as my tattoo took about 5 hours to do. She said normally a tattoo this size would be done in multiple sittings, but she helped me get through it. Appointment was 11:00 and got seated at 12:25. Loved the clean, upscale look of the place and love my tattoo.

They were fully booked for appointments online but were able to squeeze me in as a walk-in between appointments! Jam at the front counter was super sweet with getting me the correct paperwork and filling me in on pricing for piercings and jewelry. I opted to get royal blue titanium studs, which ended up looking really great! Unfortunately some of the piercings I came to get installs for were closed, so I only got one done and then a third lobe piercing (number 14! Woohoo!) My piercer, Tony, was super chill throughout the whole process. I have quite a few piercings and I was really impressed with the process here! The shop is super clean and COVID safe, and they sterilize the jewelry before piercing. Tony took the time to line my new piercing up with my existing third lobe piercing on my other ear, and I think it looks great! The piercing went by quickly and an hour later it doesn't hurt at all! No bleeding or redness. The piercing process costs $40 and each jewelry piece I bought also cost $40. They have a great selection of jewelry and if I was balling I would definitely have gone for some white gold! Their aftercare brochure is super informative and they included the cleaning solution. Not only is she a great artist, but also a great listener and doesn't make me or others who don't know art feel stupid for questions I have. Getting your first tattoo at age 50 can be intimidating. Jen Bradbury made me feel comfortable and worked with me to design my tattoo. Since then I've gone back to Skin Deep many times -- enough to get 2 full arm sleeves, 1 lower leg sleeve and many other tattoos all over my body. Jen is not only a talented artist, she is quick, has a light touch and very steady hands. My favorite tattoo is the Japanese arm sleeve she designed. I wanted to pay a tribute to my late mother, so Jen put my mom's face on the geisha and decorated her kimono with day lilies which represent a love between a mother and daughter. She also decorated the geisha's fan with the mountains near my childhood home.
