I'm a retired insurance business owner. As an employer in a conservative industry, I couldn't hire folks with visible tattoos. When I did interview workshops at the local high schools, I would always tell kids that if they wanted tattoos, don't get them outside of where a polo shirt and khaki shorts would end. I got my tattoo over 50 years ago when I was 16 on my hip bone. This year, at my annual dermatology appointment, my dermatologist commented that my skin was in great condition but that my tat had faded to old man, anchor on the forearm blue. She thought I should get it re-inked! I live next door to Hale Nui and have been walking past it forever. Often, I see Kujo and his puppy Cash at the bar in my building. He was always friendly! And so was Kujo! On the spur of the moment, I stopped in and made an appointment for later in the evening. My artist was Alex, and my salesperson handling the paperwork was Maxine. Both girls were friendly yet professional. The place is spotless. The pickiest germaphobe would be happy here. I really can't speak to the vibe as it was just me, Alex, Maxine, Alex's girl friend (forgive me, her name escapes me!) and Alex's golden retriever, Fluffy. Maxine put on the music of my choice. We listened to Jon Pardi Essentials. One of my dear friends loves country and has tattoo sleeves, so I wanted this as my memory. I told Alex my favorite colors and let her work her magic while I chatted about all sorts of things with her sweet girlfriend and Maxine. Alex outlined my crescent moon with a star between the horns and then colored it in. She said that if I wanted features such as a smile and eye on my moon, she would do that at a later date. When she was finished, she applied a bandage called a second skin designed to stay on for 3-6 days to allow the wound to be protected and heal. I was told to wash it twice a day with antibacterial soap, and keep it moisturized with Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel. I was also instructed not to touch the wound except with freshly washed hands and not to swim for two weeks. Was it painful? It wasn't pleasant but it really didn't hurt and I'm a woos when it comes to pain! How does it look? The moon has a turquoise halo. It's kinda dark on the edges but gold in the main areas. The star is red. It looks great now as opposed to old man, faded anchor ugly blue. Would I get another tattoo? I'm thinking about it. Certainly, if I do, it will be here! read more

I can't recommend this place more, we decided to stop by and get a tattoo that's been on my mind for a loooooooooong time! Upon entering the place we were greeted by two cool peeps Jamie and Kyle, told em what we wanted and They asked when we wanted it done, we said like now lol Anyhow we showed our ideas, Kyle got to working on our ideas while we went to muragame udon while he worked on the drawing. When we returned he was ready to put on a good show! I couldn't be any happier with what I got! He nailed my tattoo and I love it and so did my friends. They took me right away as a walk in and had me on a table in less than 30 minutes. 1 hour later the job was done and I was back to my room sippin a mai tai. What a great experience! I was looking to do something spontaneous and independent during my one-week stay in Oahu, so I took a 6-minute walk to Hale Nui Tattoo from my hotel on a Tuesday and got my tattoo on a Sunday, a couple of days before my flight home. First and foremost, everybody is friendly! They talk to people holistically and take your requests seriously. I find that super comforting as I have had experiences at tattoo shops that are just "too" down to business with a vibe that's so judgemental. In contrast, Hale Nui is lively and respectful. Okay, here's the good tea. I got my rib tattoo from Bluez, who was super comforting and kind throughout the session. It's funny because I had to put on a disposable bra and pasties BUT I happen to be on the flatter side (lol I'll admit it). Bluez helped me remain covered up by giving me a blanket and even giving me an extra sheet. The guy who was at the front desk (didn't catch his name but he's really cool) even helped put on the disposable bra in a very respectful way. I think the most important takeaway from the experience was that as a woman who was going to be shirtless for the next 3 hours, I felt very safe. So I bring the tattoo home to California, show my new tattoo to my friends, and they LOVE it. I LOVE it. I got exactly what I wanted. And the weird thing was that the session was really fun! I honestly thought rib tattoos would have me blacking out. Maybe it's because Bluez was a really good tattoo artist that that pain wasn't unbearable. He would also ask me how I was doing and how the pain level was after the session. On a ten scale, the pain was at a range from 6-8 depending on the location of the needle. Overall, the experience was so great. I came out feeling all kinds of confident, skipping down the street past the ABC store (they're literally everywhere omg). I'd suggest Hale Nui to all my friends. I sure as hell know that when I come back to Oahu soon, I'll be visiting the shop for another appointment. read more

Pretty dope spot. The tatto artists here are super chill and they work with you on the fly. The internet was down and the artists had to hand draw your design if you wanted it done right there and then. The only reason I don't give them 5 stars is because the chick at the front was super rude from the start all the way till the end. Almost left and checked out another spot because of her attitude. As someone who gets a % of what the artists make, she should probably try to pretend like she likes working there. She interrupted my tattoo session like 4 times, once asking about giving another employee an envelope and three other times about what kind of price she quote a customer. If it's one thing you don't need during your tat session is your artist being distracted by questions she should know the answers to because it's her job to handle the front. She was even being rude when I was telling I needed to pay for my tattoo, I had to tell her three times that I was there to pay... They didn't have change there either but she didn't do anything about it... she just said we don't have change... it was only 2 bucks change so I said keep it but she could have just said something like " I can go grab some if you'd like to wait" .... because obviously you'll need to break someone's bills eventually...
