I really wish that we had taken our SCUBA cert class here.... We got gift certs to Sport Chalet for Christmas and we didn't want to seem ungrateful--my future sister-in-law found Sport Chalet to have the cheapest prices... Their price was cheap, but once you factored in the books ($85), blue PIC card ($20) and rental gear, we were already paying more to take the class at sport chalet. Additionally, sport chalet doesn't have their own pool--students must travel to the Hawthorne public pool for dives--and the pool is used by 5 other Sport Chalet locations, while Pacific Wilderness has their own pool, which is designed specifically for SCUBA and used by their students alone. We also ended up buying all our gear from Pacific Wilderness--the prices and selection were much better. Finally, we had a terrible time scheduling our classes with Sport Chalet. Pacific Wilderness has a lot more certified instructors so there are backups in case your instructor isn't available on a scheduled day/time. I hope that anyone shopping around for a SCUBA class will find the considerations above helpful in making their decision where to take their SCUBA class. In my experience what appeared to be the "cheapest" option was not, nor was it a good value. Although I can't go back in time and re-take my scuba cert, I will continue to go to Pac Wilderness to rent/buy gear and have my gear serviced. The employees are generally very knowledgeable and they carry quality gear for very fair prices. read more

The store, for what it is, is amazing. If you need scuba or spearfishing equipment immediately, this is were you will find it. There selection of on-hand equipment is unmatched by any other brick and mortar storein the area. If you are shopping for equipment or expect someone to help you indepth with questions about diving or equipment, this store is lacking. The staff is knowledgeable, however if you expect to be greeted when you walk in or asked if you need assistance, you will not find that at Pac Wild. This, however, is not the same case for their employeed instructors. They are top notch and will make sure you are properly trained and have a good understanding of whatever course materials you are cover for that given class. All in all. If you know what you are doing and know what you want this is a great store. If you are going in for assistance or questions. You will leave disappointed. If you are going for a course. My family and I just completed the PADI Open Water course using the Grupon and we are very happy with PW. Excellent value and quality course. Our instructor was Cory and he was awesome. Made sure everyone was safe and understood the skills we needed to learn. The dive shop is great and staff was very helpful. Prices are very competitive with good quality products. As per their policy, my wife and daughter had to swap out their boots during the pool session and PW didn't think twice. They provided a replacement right away. One suggestion for anyone considering the course is to go out to the beach before the ocean dives and practice getting into the water. Although the waves are considered small and easy to enter, they can be intimidating for anyone who hasn't been in the ocean for a while. There were two groups from PW that weekend and some people from both groups were initially too afraid to enter the water. It really is easy to enter the water but just takes a level of comfort; especially when you are loaded up with all your gear. I highly recommend PW for getting scuba certified. read more

My boyfriend and I got groupons to get open water scuba certified and we couldn't be happier! Our instructor Khrystina was passionate and extremely knowledgeable. I was really nervous at first but she helped me through the whole process with ease. We purchased scuba gear from the shop and they were kind enough to let us swap out our gear that didn't fit comfortably during the pool session. Two weekends went by fast and I'm finally certified! I'm really happy with my experience here. We had an assistant instructor, Steve, who was super helpful and had a great attitude the whole time. He came with us to the first two open water dives and I was bummed out he couldn't attend the last two. Pacific wilderness is a great dive shop and training center!!. I took the PADI open water certification class just this last weekend. First about the shop, this class was the cheapest I could find. The dive shop was helpful setting up my fiancé and me with the required gear. They don't up-sell either, they give you unbiased advice. The shop provided high quality gear at great discounts(better than online!) Now about the class. The class I took is a introduction into scuba diving. You really need to do your homework because the instructors are serious about making you a diver! The dive instructors are absolute professionals. My main teacher was Khrystyna and her team including a lot of experienced divers. Steve, Tim, Danya, and Jason came out multiple times to help with the class and keep us progressing. This team is very comfortable under water and will make you feel right at home. Khrystyna takes diving safety extremely serious. DON"T DO GROUPON WITH THEM! First of all I should of known by checking Yelp first, again my bad. The Groupon certification deal is a scam with upgrades and diving in dirty San Pedro Harbor water. I couldn't even see my hand in front of my face, that's how murky the water was. Over half the class had panic issues and didn't pass, and needed to pay more to finish. Everything is an extra charge and it adds up quick. After the fact, I compared with others and it's confirmed... I got ripped off. The whole experience was very disappointing. My daughter and I signed up for the open water diving certification at Pacific Wilderness, and, I must say, it was a pretty awesome experience! We feel extremely confident in our abilities as divers because of the amazing training that we received there. The entire program, in general, is geared towards making you a safe and competent diver. More specifically, the training we received from Kurt Schmid, our instructor, was outstanding! Kurt is very experienced, being trained as a Navy diver, knowledgeable, thorough, and patient. Being patient really is key when teaching critical life-saving skills. Anyway, I can go on, but I'm just gonna wrap it up by saying if you're thinking about doing an open water scuba course, you really can't go wrong with Pacific Wilderness. They've been around for a while, extremely experienced, helpful, and Kurt and the other instructors are really outstanding! All told, we had an amazingly positive experience there! read more

Most divers are down to earth people, that are generally helpful and approachable. I was hoping Pacific Wilderness would be the same. I was in the market for 3 full scuba regulator Tech sets, and wanted to see them in store before I purchased, for Tech Diving... I don't claim to know it all, but I do have a few dives under my belt. I was approached by a "David" who is a sales rep, and told him what I needed. He said he would love to work with me...so far so good... Strike 1: He then disappears, and walks to the back and eats his dinner. Now, granted it was 6pm, and everybody's gotta eat, but I don't believe eating a taco in front of customers while talking to them is proper customer etiquette. Especially when you start spitting on them... Strike 2: I told him i wanted a back up 2nd stage on a 22inch LP Hose in BLACK. He stated "You must not dive a lot because all backup regulators are yellow, so your buddy can distinguish it." You really shouldn't tell a customer that they don't know what they are doing. If you're reading this, David, My back up 2nd Stages goes around my neck, and is NOT for air sharing. My 7 foot primary 2nd stage is for sharing. But thanks for telling me I want that in yellow also. I suggest you don't tell customers things that you don't know about. Strike 3: I told him what I wanted and see if he could work with me in price. He said he will give up his commission to get me a good deal...then walked to the back and heard his obnoxious voice telling another employee that he said he will work with me on the price, but he wasn't really going to... If you're going to screw over a customer, don't do it within earshot of them. By that time, I've had enough. I was just shaking my head at this quality of this diver. He gave me his card, and said that if I wanted a deal, I have to work with him and ONLY him, and no one else. He also said that he doesn't get commission on products. Doesn't matter to me because I have already decided that I will not buy from them. Maybe the other people working there are better. At least i hope they are. But this David character is something else. His card said, "DiveMaster" on it...Sounds like he needs to go through the course again, and see exactly what PADI wants him to be. because he is the complete opposite. Last annoying thing: it was 6:30pm. He was closing up shop, and asked if I could come back next week. The store closes at 7pm. I still had at least 30 minutes to just look around. Last time i checked, the economy wasn't that great, and I was hoping to spend over 5k in regulator purchases. But I left there with a bad taste, and will never recommend anyone to go there ever. But on a good note, this caused me to drive to Culver City, to a place called Eco Divers. If you want the "diving" experience, and have EXTREMELY professional and knowledgeable divers that are honest, and will work with you instead of pretending to be something they're not, GO THERE. They are completely worth the wait, and EVERY single employee there is nothing short of amazing. They got my business, and a lot of it too. Enjoy and stay wet! I had ordered a new pony rig online and it got stuck somewhere in the postal system. I stopped by last minute a as last ditch effort to find what I needed for my dive trip and WOW! I was blown away by the inventory of this shop as well as the friendly knowledgeable service! These guys are great. They had everything I needed at better prices than Amazon! Way better prices and a pony kit all ready assembled and ready to go. They filled the bottle bagged it and I was out the door in 15min headed for my boat. Horrible customer service. I wouldn't go back. I went in to buy some gear and see if this might become my new dive shop but I think not. The surly customer service and know it all employees are too much to handle. I asked one of the employees a question about weather the 70 dollar dive knife I was buying would stay in the sheath with the clips and his response was "duh!" like I'm an idiot. The knife promptly disappeared after one dive, fell out of the sheath. Good job idiot. They are just there to upsell you on crap you don't need. Yeah, a bunch of good reviews from people who have taken their scuba cert's there is not surprising. They are new divers and know squat. Just completed my PADI open water certification, and can't say enough good things about these guys. Ed was my instructor and he's just fantastic, really knowledgeable and patient (especially with a nervous diver like me). Couldn't have asked for anything more! For the ocean dive they brought out a team of instructor which really puts you at ease. Everyone at the shop is extremely helpful, and I loved hearing about their experiences and all of the advice they shared. Like a previous review mentioned, prices are great, and I'm satisfied with the gear purchased here. When you're new to something you always feel a bit skittish when purchasing gear, afraid of buying unnecessary stuff recommended by the store, but I assure you that that won't happen here. Every single thing they recommended I needed and I'm glad I followed their suggestion. They also encourage you to keep in touch for future dives, so it's good to know that you'll have a community to tap into after getting certified. I finally decided that it was time to stop renting and buy all of my own dive gear. I was looking into higher-end gear, so I did some research to find out what I wanted first and then proceeded to shop around to price it out. I am a deal hunter and typically buy stuff online, but decided to check out Pacific Wilderness because: 1. Their prices were very competitive, 2. They carry all of the brands that I was considering and 3. I had a great experience with them during my Open Water certification course back in 2011. That said, I went into the San Pedro store last Saturday afternoon and was helped by David and Mitch (I hope I am remembering his name correctly). After spending nearly 3 hours in the store asking questions and trying on various BCDs and wet suits, I decided on one of their package deals, which saved me a lot of $$ over buying all of the gear individually. I am very happy with my new gear and with my experience at Pacific Wilderness. Overall, their staff is very knowledgeable about the products they sell, patient (happy to answer any number of questions) and more focused on creating a lasting customer relationship than simply closing a big sale. I have wanted to become scuba certified for years and years, so when a Livingsocial offer became available I jumped on the chance. There were a few different offers from dive shops but I decided on Pacific Wilderness. I went on to the website and found the Livingsocial banner. Everything was laid out very clearly, basically you decide on 2 consecutive weekends to take the class from the schedule listed, call the shop to confirm, pick up the packet and complete it at the very least 1 week before the dive. The packet is basically a study book with 5 sections and a corresponding DVD, along with a dive log and dive chart. There is A LOT of info packed into those materials and it is all necessary to know, as I found out when we progressed into the pool and beach dives. The first Saturday of class I met our instructors Lisa and Eduardo who were very knowledgeable, positive, friendly and down to earth people. In fact I can say the same about nearly everyone I met at the shop. They are real people who are passionate about diving and are some of the best resources for any kind of information that you might need. My class completed the pool dives in the first weekend, and moved on to the ocean dives the following weekend at Laguna Beach. Yes, it was a long drive from Glendale and yes, we had to be there at 7 am, but getting to dive for the first time was such a phenomenally amazing experience I didn't even mind. There were at least 4 or 5 instructors at the spot where we dove, and they were all experienced and good natured. The entire dive felt like a gathering amongst friends. Scuba diving is not an easy feat, we all had to learn our equipment and we spent a good amount of time with it on, and I'm talking an extra 60 to 80 lbs on your back, not including weight from being soaking wet. But, the entire time I felt very safe under the watchful eyes of the instructors. I'm sure these people have dealt with some pretty significant issues with hauling newbies in and out of the water and I was very glad to have so many of the around. Getting my scuba cert was one of my most rewarding experiences and a lot of it was because of the help and support from the people at Pacific Wilderness. I plan on continuing to visit this shop whenever I decide to invest in any equipment of my own, though for now renting all the gear for close to $60 is a pretty sweet deal as far as I can tell. And they have organized weekly dives for no additional charge. I'm very glad to be a part of this diving community. read more

I chose Pacific Wilderness because they are a "ScubaPro" dive shop, not because they are the closest or easiest for me to get to. So, I dropped off a couple of reg sets for annual check and service. Couldn't have been happier today when I picked them up. One of the regs apparently was in fine shape and didn't need service. They could have simply told me it needed parts and charged me an extra $50. They didn't. The times I've been in, they've been pleasant, attentive and helpful, add to that, they are apparently honest! In November 2011, friends and I completed our diving classes with a phenomenal Living Social deal. The instructor (Bakin) was excellent instructor even teaching us other items to protect ourselves such as what to do if your weight belt falls off. I felt incredibly safe and comfortable in both the pool classes and the open water dives in Catalina. I highly recommend getting certified through them. In December 2012, I brought in my dated inherited gear to David and Jeff. They examined my 20 year old gear and explained why my gear was unsafe in terms that made it easy for me to understand. They provided me with two options : 1) providing me with suggested recommendations in order to update some of the gear while being able to use the rest of my gear safely (i.e. new BC since back in the days ladies BCs didn't exactly exist and to combat back problems) OR 2) update and purchase new scuba gear. Overall, David explained everything to help me understand why my gear was unsafe, was willing to allow me to consider my options and think thoroughly, explained potential savings in the long run if I purchase all new gear today vs updating some of it as well as showing the financial savings. He was not sale-sy in any way or pressured me but came from a place of safety and knowledge. In the end, I purchased all new gear and am ready to go on a dive with my updated and safe gear. I highly recommend purchasing your dive gear with David and Jeff. They take the time to assist you and help you find the right products you need. Overall, I am pleased with getting my scuba certification with Pacific Wilderness and my scuba instructor, pleased with the service in helping me purchase safe and up to date equipment and the friendliness of the staff. read more

I want to start by saying that everyone in the shop is great.. mostly. I called Pac Wild last Christmas to get an idea of the place- their programs, products, etc. The first time I called I was extremely excited but was treated poorly from the owner of the shop. I'm not sure if he has an attitude problem or just thinks of himself too highly- which he might pride himself on- but he made me turn away from this place when I called. I really wanted to get my Open Water Cert, so I decided to give this place another try. I called six months later and the person on the phone (Shawn) was great. When I came into the store to get my supplies, Shawn and Jake were amazing. They were extremely nice, helpful, and were able to answer all my questions about scuba. Class time. A man checks to make sure you have all of your beginners gear (owner) before you begin class. He cracked a smile at some point, which was nice. The first weekend of class finished. I cannot recommend Ian, Tyler, and Josh highly enough!!!!!! They are amazing, fun, entertaining teachers and they each add their own element to the class. They teach the class because scuba is their passion, which makes the class way more enjoyable for the students. THANK YOU!!! Grant and Jason were excellent! I was driving down to Terranea for a dive when I realized I forgot my wetsuit at home. Thankfully, Pacific Wilderness was open. Their knowledgeable staff helped me find a great wetsuit quickly. In the fitting room, I checked Amazon's price for the same wetsuit, but it was about $50 more than Pacific Wilderness! (And for a close out model) I used the savings to buy a pair of gloves and an air fill after the dive. The wetsuit performed great -- warm and snug yet flexible. There was a miscommunication initially when I contacted them about a rental but Jeff, the owner, was super responsive and remedied the situation quickly. We ended up renting with the help of Bob who was super knowledgeable and helpful. He upgraded us on our bcd's and tanks bc we were diving in drysuits. He also helped put our weights into our bcd's. So happy that I chose to go with Pacific Wilderness for my open water dive certification! Instructor Khrystyna and divemaster Tim are the best!!! They are both great at what they do and walk you through every step with ease. At first I was pretty nervous for class to begin but once I got a feel of the way they teach I knew it was going to be a great experience. :-) HUGE RECOMMENDATION: take your first dive to Catalina Island! It is well worth it. Originally my class was supposed to do all of our dives as beach dives either in Laguna or Redondo but we decided to do Catalina for the first day and get all of our tests out of the way (the entrance into the water is a breeze and you get to see huge Black Sea bass which is pretty awesome) and save the beach dives for the next day which you will have to deal with the waves while entering into the ocean as well as out. With all of the gear you are wearing it can get a little tiring. Both destinations were great and I'm glad I got to experience the difference. My best friend, boyfriend, and myself did our open water cert. over the summer and we were immediately hooked. Everyone we came in contact with were extremely helpful and nice. So, Ive been wanting to try scuba diving forever. I want to learn so bad!! So I researched,,,and I heard Pacific Wilderness is the place to go, because they: A. Have experience and knowledge. B. Are professional. C. They show great passion for the sport, and finally, they are very interested in arming their students with knowledge. They really care about, and love what they do. THAT MATTERS. My husband (who has dived a few times in Hawaii, but isn't certified), and I booked our Intro to Scuba class. Super easy, over the phone,, polite and professional service. We went last night. Soooo exciting. Intro to scuba is for people like me who have never been scuba diving,,,but want to try it before committing to an Open Water class. So our class was at 7pm last night. Its in San Pedro. Easy to find. We were greeted by Sean, who I spoke to over the phone a few times. The shop is amazing. It seems like its a candy store for divers!!!! The pool is in the back,,,,and its heated. Our instructors for the night were Lisa and Eduardo. Super nice and patient. We did a little classroom time. Thats so Lisa could go over some basic information that everyone should know,,,about the equipment, about how to use it. Then we got wet!! We had a great time. I struggled a bit more,,,well, a lot more than my husband. My mind just wouldn't accept that I could breath underwater. Lisa was SO patient with me. In a calm voice, she explained I just need to breathe in and breathe out completely. Just relax. Scuba is baby steps. For those who have never tried it,,,,YOU MUST TRY IT. Its amazing. My husband on the other hand, was a natural. I was so proud of him. I stayed in the shallow end, under Eduardo's watchful eye. My husband moved forward with the class, did some drills (clearing his mask, recovering his regulator) and then ventured into the deep end under Lisa's watchful eye. Eduardo was amazing too!!! He could see my frustration. I kept feeling the need to surface out of fear. He spoke to me about his experience, and how I just need to breathe and breathe out completely. Just relax. Once I did that, I was able to feel relaxed and breathe normally underwater without surfacing. It was amazing, and I want more!!! I think one of the most important things I learned last night, is that you have to take scuba at your own pace. There is no race. I think one of the other things Ive learned is that one must fight the urge to surface...just relax and breathe......... Im grateful that the instructors are so nice. They have seen it all. They do NOT make you feel stupid. They are patient and understanding. They only care about your safety and comfort. My husband and I will be signing up for the open water class at Pacific Wilderness next year. For me, it was an amazing first time experience. I want more. In the meantime, I will work on some breathing exercises!!! LOL. My husband had a blast. He was so excited afterwards. He forgot how much he loved scuba diving. If you are looking to learn to scuba dive, I would HIGHLY recommend Pacific Wilderness!!!!!! read more

We just finished the Open Water Diving classes with Khrystyna and she was AMAZING! She is very knowledgeable about diving and really works with you to make sure you learn the material and understand what you are doing. She was the best! We plan on doing the advanced classes next! Just took the Open Water Certification Class and have nothing but great things to say! Our instructor Khrystyna was incredible and everyone at the shop was so accommodating and knowledgeable about all things scuba. This review is for Pacific Wilderness located in San Pedro, California shop. I put my reg in for an inspection only. The work order has several boxes that can be checked for work the customer wants, i.e., OVERHAUL, ANNUAL INSPECTION, and OTHER EXPLAIN BELOW. Only the ANNUAL INSPECTION box checked. The employee at the shop at the time I gave them my reg assure me no work other than an inspection would be preform and if more work was necessary I could accept or decline the extra work. I was quoted a price of $25.00 for the ANNUAL INSPECTION. I was told I would be called if the reg needed repairs and would be called when it was ready to be picked up. Pacific Wilderness never called to say it was ready and they never called to receive authorization to make any repairs. Pacific Wilderness made repairs for which they had never received authorization. Pacific Wilderness stated "We don't call when your stuff is ready and if it needs repairs we just go ahead and make those repairs and that is what we did." The older man at the shop on the day I picked up my reg gave an analogy of; "When you put your car in for service and they see it needs other repairs the dealership makes those repairs." I don't know where he takes his car, but a dealership cannot make repairs without explicit written permission or permission received by phone. The attitude of we do what we want is egregious and the prices charged for the unauthorized repairs was high. read more

I brought in my regulators and dive computers for servicing and ended up having a problem with one of computers. Scubapro said it was not reparable and offered a $50 trade-in. Jeff Smith worked with Scubapro and got me a replacement at no cost to me. It is a new computer and an excellent substitute for the broken one. I doubt that I would have been able to get Scubapro to do this for me. Thanks to Jeff I am back in the water! read more
