My son wanted to get his dive certification to build up his confidence. I researched a few scuba instructors in the area before choosing liquid adrenaline and I can tell you it was a great experience. Ruth is a great instructor ensuring the student has the book knowledge, the application prior to getting to open water. You first start out with an online program before you move on to the pool and then your final part will be in the open waters. We were able to do that part at Catalina Island which made it even better. As getting into diving brand new there are some expenses that you should be aware of obviously you have to pay for the instruction and you'll have to rent the equipment or buy it. My son chose to go and get the mask, gloves, boots, and fins, everything else can be rented pretty reasonably. We got vip service and learned more than our friends who have done padi with larger groups or hotels/travel. I was actually shocked how little my brother and sister and law learned about scuba when they got certified in Hawaii. I didn't realize it when I signed up for the scuba certification class but I was suddenly struck with fear when we entered the ocean for our first open water dive. This was our first dive outside of certification/refresher classes so we are complete beginners. I was not real excited about dry suit diving after an earlier unpleasant experience. My dive buddy referred me to Ruth. We traveled to Catalina for a two dive day, with the objective of my complete comfort and confidence in the drysuit being restored. Patience, good instructions and ideal conditions created the perfect learning scenario. Each dive was great and I did three additional dry suit dives the next day with my dive buddy. A buddy of mine was planning a trip to go SCUBA diving in the Cayman Islands and asked me to go. I always had a desire to SCUBA dive, but never really new where to begin. I did a little research online about PADI and NAUI certifications and decided to come on Yelp to help me pick a good instructor. I was looking for an extremely reliable dive instructor after being thoroughly disappointed and frustrated with my last. I did some extensive searching for a NAUI instructor throughout the Orange County and LA area and found Ruth. She mentioned to me that she was an independent contractor that instructs and certifies numerous dive courses. After looking at her resume through the NAUI website, I was impressed by her qualifications and felt she was very qualified. I'm the type of individual that likes to send emails because I work behind a computer all day...also because I like to have permanent record on things. Every single time that I sent an email to Ruth, she responded within 24 hours (most of the time in a few hours) and she was very thorough. When I arrived in Catalina for my dive instruction I was expecting a one-on-one instruction. Instead, I got two instructors. LOL! Her husband is also a divemaster and it was great having him along. Ruth is simply an amazing instructor. Her knowledge of the underwater world is only trumped by her natural gifts as a teacher. I've known Ruth for years, and she just finished ceritifying my 19 year old son. Today was his first official dive as a newly certified diver. His buoyancy control at this early stage is great; testimony to the quality of instruction he received from Ruth. We also spent 87 minutes under....that's a long time even for an experienced diver, and both his calmness and proficiency translated to a long bottom time. I wanted to do some advanced classes and tried to go through my former shop, but after paying them and waiting over a year, they could not get me in to finish it all. In planning a dive trip to Catalina while vacationing, I was fortunate and found Ruth here on Yelp. I am a relative new diver and was concerned yet excited to dive off Catalina and the kelp forrest. From the very beginning, Ruth was very timely and helpful in answering emails, TM's and getting me the information I needed to not only make the dives but catch the ferry to the island. The day of the dive, she met me on the ferry going to the island and discussed my experience, the site and the type dives we would make. Once at the site, she had prearranged my air and weights so gearing up was a breeze. On the dives, she knew every nook and cranny to show me amongst just a few things like a shark egg, an abalone and introduced me to a dive legend. She was very comfortable under water and helped alleviate any fears I harbored. In all, I made 4 relaxing 1 hr dives. At the end of the day, we took the ferry back to Long Beach and parted ways. I initially became interested in SCUBA diving through my SO who loves the sport, and came across Ruth through his referral. Like my recommender, I have a very busy schedule and also live outside of California, so I was looking for an instructor who had the patience to work with me. Before I started her course, I heard many positive things about her style of teaching, and I saw her interact with her dive students in Catalina Island while I snorkeled at the dive park. I was nervous at first but at my initial encounter with Ruth at the dive park I felt like we were a good match as she had a protective and pragmatic vibe. It took me awhile to get the course started after meeting with Ruth at a local Starbucks due to the demands of my schedule, but she consistently kept in contact with me and asked for my status on the book work. I eventually completed the book work and started my pool session right away before I had to leave for school. Ruth made every possible effort to work with her connections to get my pool session in. She also helped me select the proper mask, snorkel, fins, gloves and booties at a local dive shop. After the pool session was completed, I met up with Ruth in Catalina Island for 2 days. She provided calmness and comfort during all of my sessions and I felt confident in my abilities by the time I finished my first 3 dives. My last 2 dives had to be completed a few months later but Ruth, without fail, agreed to meet up with me on a short notice in Catalina Island. I felt well prepared and ready for our first dive trip after the course concluded. Ruth is well organized and knowledgeable; and most importantly, safety is her number one priority. I came across Liquid Adrenaline Divers when I was looking for a refresher course, as well as a place to get my Advanced/Nitrox Certification. I am so beyond glad I met Ruth, and her husband Larry. They are some of the kindest and funniest people you will meet with such huge hearts. They also dive A LOT, and have a true passion for what they do. Because of this, they have a great amount of knowledge on diving, and are extremely open to any questions you may have. They make you feel very comfortable before getting in the water by ensuring that you know all the important information needed in order to have a SAFE and fun dive. Ruth is also extremely flexible when it comes to completing the certification. However much time you need to take in order to complete the certification (within reason of course!), she works with. She is beyond patient and would work around my schedule to accomodate my needs which was greatly appreciated. I got sick two days before a scheduled dive in Catalina, and she was more than happy to reschedule. She truly prioritizes you when it comes to the certification, and not just what works for her, which is one of the reasons she is such an excellent instructor. I highly recommend her especially if you prefer to work one on one. It was really nice being able to have an instructor focus on my individual needs rather than being lost within a large class. As a mostly warm water divers, my dive buddy and I hired Ruth to guide us around Catalina and work on some skills. I must say, she is fantastic - could not have asked for a better guide! Hello my name is Kristen, I am 24 years old and originally from Pennsylvania! I graduated college in 2011 with a Marine Biology degree & got scuba certified in 2009. I love scuba and marine life but now living in Utah working for construction, I just don't have the time. Luckily I got some time off from work coming up and started to do some research to get additional advanced scuba certifications to continue my education in my field.
