A little over a week ago I took daughter and her family sailing via Pacifica. My background in sailing is fairly proficient and I wanted their first experience aboard a boat to be a positive one so that I'll be able to progress their sailing/boating lives. After consulting w Mick, a nice and extremely helpful gent, we decided that a catamaran would be a great experience, and it was. It's a monohull w training wheels. Capt Curtis and Mitch met me at the docks, above and beyond for Mitch, and we were off. Curtis was great w all my grandkids ( 4 - 6 to 14 ) and all their questions. Pacifica Sailing Charters are absolutely wonderful. It was our anniversary yesterday and was initially bummed when we received notice that the time we selected was not available. While we were trying to figure out what to do instead, they called back and told us they had found us a boat and Captain. I was stunned and so excited! We couldn't believe it! Four of us had a great Memorial day charter! Like many others we had snatched up the Groupon, which I advise scoping out for a sweet discount. Parking was super easy and we found our stalwart captain, Mick at the designated meeting spot, right on time. There's a small deli nearby where you can grab some supplies and use an ATM. Captain Mick had us set off in no time, and we could tell he has loads of experience and local knowledge. Our sailboat, the 'Masquerade' had taken pole in a race the day prior, and bolstered my respect for the boat and captain. An hour out and an hour back went by quick, as did a few cans of BYOB. I learned about the San Diego bay, nautical history and the story behind Ballast Point. We saw a good number of seals, which the Navy was working with this day. Ahoy! Mick sets the bar high. From the second I booked this charter to boarding his fabulous sailboat, our trip was well planned, easy, and full of adventure. Some of his sailing stories had me at the edge of my seat. He has truly seen it all, ask him about the last time he saw a great white! First he brought us to Ballast point which was beautiful. Rich with knowledge of the site, Mick shared endless stories about this landmark and other interesting things he has seen during his time in the open sea. Next he got us SO CLOSE to the government sealed area where there was a submarine docked. It was majestic! There was nothing holding him back from getting us close enough to snap a few photos. On our way back he brought us by some wild life where we saw pelicans, sea lions, and other species of birds! This was a fun way to end our tour. Mick's sailboat is large, beautiful, and intimate. He will make you feel welcome and at home. We were on a private tour and got so much more value then what we paid on Groupon. We will absolutely be booking a tour with Mick again. First of all I wouldn't trust the 5 star reviews, they emailed me after my sail asking for a 5 star review in exchange for a potential free boat ride. I wouldn't use this company again even if it was free. We were in San Diego for the weekend celebrating our anniversary and I wanted to take my husband on a boat ride, found this company and went to book the sail. Upon check out there was a spot for a promo code, I googled to see if any existed and found there was a groupon for half the price of what I was planning on booking which I thought was a great deal. We redeemed the cruise on 8.28 and it was an all around really bad and uncomfortable experience. When the captain Mick met us at the dock, the first thing out of his mouth was that the company sells these cruises for next to nothing and doesn't pay him and he can only do this if we tip and we should know the retail value of this cruise is $480 and he was expecting 4 people and that's unfortunate because that's the amount we have to burden. We literally had not even opened the gate to walk onto the dock that leads to the boat before he badgered us with this. He even said "I guess I can still take you guys but just wanted you to know" I honestly didn't want to get on the boat at that point - he had set such an uncomfortable tone. The sail then proceeded to be completely awkward and silent (not to mention there was no water or snacks provided as stated). You could tell he didn't want to be there, he just picked a point out in the water, sailed there and turned around. I want to be very clear that this had nothing to do with money. I was more than willing to buy the private 2 person 2.5 hour cruise for $280 that Pacifica offers but randomly found the groupon instead. This was not a $480 cruise for 4-6 people as advertised on their website. The company's confirmation email ahead of time clearly stated it was retailed at $250. I just am so disappointed that we had such a terrible time. I booked this trip as a special part of our weekend didn't enjoy a second of the ride which is the fault of the captain Mick. We ended up tipping him $60 because he made the entire situation so uncomfortable. I wish I gave him zero and never went on this trip. It honestly made our day worse instead of this expected wonderful sail. read more
