I had been trying to get help for a tax snafu involving my parents, Spain, the IRS, a grifter and a misplaced shed of documents. The details are weird but unimportant. I had called 11 other tax services and not one of them even bothered to call me back. Padgett returned my call immediately and took the time to explain everything to me before we even talked about a contract. Both Bunny and John were responsive, patient and helpful and assured me that this was NBD, they had it under control. I appreciate the time and effort they took to establish trust. I appreciate that they called me more than once, since I missed their call while at work. When we finally connected over the phone, I introduced myself and gave a brief summary of my tax situation. The person that answered quickly said "this will cost you about 1k, which is probably more than you can afford". I was shocked by that statement. I didn't tell you my yearly income or any details of my situation. What was it about me that gave you this impression? My voice? Because I'm black? Before you say "don't make this about race", we spoken literally for 90 seconds and he already determined this is above my pay grade. I'm a system engineer. I have done this for years and can afford the service, but I don't accept disrespect or condescending attitude in any business I ever do. I'm happy I haven't signed up with this provider. I just had a terrible experience with this firm. I called the front desk for my request and I was very clear about it. They referred me to someone who for some reason was very rude and didn't seem to like my questions (which were very easy reasonable question). He then proceeded to tell me that we are not vibing and if we work together I'll get angry and he'll get frustrated. He could have apologized in a much more professional way, I am not forcing him to take my case, but there is no need to talk this way or tell me this! To add on the reply I received. I was not looking for free advice at all. I asked how can I be billed for this advice I do not expect free service nor would I waste anyone's time. I met with John 02/15/14 and I was certainly impressed that I was out of there in less than an hour--it could have taken less than a half hour if needed! He found deductions I was not aware of, which maximized my return, and he also made my life easier by answering all of my questions related to switching jobs mid-year and filing in multiple states, which I found to be a hassle in the past. John's professionalism and dedication to understanding you and your personal/business tax needs is second to none! If you are reading this review, and are located in Boston or the Neponset Valley area, I would highly recommend scheduling an appointment if not for this year, next year (2014 filing year). [tl;dr: I'd give John 6 stars if I could. Well worth the drive to Westwood.] John is efficient, friendly, honest, and great at doing your taxes. He's fast -- my taxes were done 33 minutes after I walked in the door. He has weekend hours, and while Westwood seems SO FAR AWAY, it really only took 1/2 hr to get there from Cambridge. This is my second year now working with John (or rather, sitting there while he makes his work looks easy) and I am impressed. John has never failed to make me feel like a valued customer and my (3 so far) tax appointments with him have always been pleasant. He's friendly, funny, and he remembered some obscure details about an amendment we had filed last year -- seriously -- without looking it up! He's patient when you don't have all the right forms or if you don't understand random tax mumbo jumbo (this is why I pay to have them done). He has a way of making you feel like he enjoys doing your taxes. WEIRD. As far as actually DOING your taxes, from what I can tell, John has a ton of experience and is always looking to maximize your deductions (all within legal bounds, of course -- no shady business here). He asks pointed questions about things you may have spent money on that can be claimed for tax purposes. And, he's honest. One of my forms hasn't come in the mail yet, and John asked that I not pay him until his work is actually done. (I would have had no issue paying him ahead of time, either. I have no doubt the taxes would have been filed just the same. But it's a nice way to make the customer feel like their best interest is what's important.) So seriously a no-brainer.
