I really like the Pageant Print Shop! It's a small store located off of 4th, and they usually have a $1 - $5 boxes of 'prints' (more like pages from old/retro/vintage books in its individual plastic sleeve, with an information sticker of the title and the publisher) located outside by their window. It's definitely fun to sift through the different 'prints' - I particularly love the ones that are from children's books, as I have a thing for the illustrations. These would be great as gifts, or to frame them and decorate your rooms with! Prices seem reasonable and you never know what kind of a unique 'print' you'll find. Overall, a really cool store where I was able to find a print of a map of NYC for $13 and change after tax. I docked one star because the owner wasn't exactly the nicest to me for taking photos, since I didn't see the multiple signs that said no phone zone. Anyway, I was a bit taken aback since when I walked in I got basically no greeting whatsoever and she went on to have a phone call with someone and have a conversation with a mail woman. She was much nicer with some other ladies who came in for a look though, asking them if they need help. I feel like it may be because I'm younger and I wasn't dressed particularly fancy that she thought I was just there to take some photos and leave without buying anything? Anyway, I had every intention of buying something so her attitude with me just took me by surprise and made me feel really bad to be honest. However, I was very satisfied with my purchase and the map I bought there and she did help me look for a suitable print after I asked for help, so that's why the review remains at 4 stars. This is easily the coolest shop I've been to in a long time. Come here for authentic old prints. There's a nice section on New York prints and also tons of maps. Other categories include entertainment, plants, animals, love and art deco just to name a few. I stumbled on Paceant after visiting the Merchant House museum, and knew I could easily spend a lot of time in this tiny shop leafing through the many, many prints they have. So when I wanted vintage food ads for my new kitchen, I knew just where to go--and Pageant didn't disappoint. Nicely organized and sorted, each print is clearly listed with price and its original date. Older does not necessarily mean most expensive, and everything is very reasonably priced: I saw many larger prints in the $20-30 range, and lots of smaller ones in the $8-15 range. The gentleman working there was very nice, pointing me in the right direction and letting me look as long as I needed to, then referring me to a good framer down the block. Definitely worth checking out for decor and any kind of older print you can think of. read more

A perfect place to add a historical touch to your home, and a unique component to the dynamic fabric that is NYC. After hanging out with a friend in the East Village, he mentioned that his girlfriend picked him a map of his specific neighborhood (down to about a 10 block radius or so) as a birthday gift. Inspired, I later checked out this place myself to find a map of my own neighborhood. The clerk was very helpful in helping me find the map. True, it was a real splurge between buying the map and framing it, but it was completely worth it, without a doubt. Because the pace of life is so quick in the City, we often forget how old it really is. Maps like the ones Pageant Print Shop sells remind you just how much NYC has changed. It's one thing to know that most of Manhattan's shoreline was lined with piers, it's another to see them outlined on a map. I highly recommend visiting next time you're in the East Village, or even going out of your way to check it out. read more

A wonderful little print shop with a broad selection, and very well organized. Highly recommended for the prints. Unfortunately the lady working here was incredibly rude and hostile. She seemed visibly uncomfortable with the fact that my two friends and I were speaking a language other than English (really? In Manhattan?). As I approached the counter to make a purchase she practically accused me of theft because one of the straps of my purse had slipped off my shoulder. She was also very upset that I had taken my phone out of my pocket to check the time. So, I really enjoyed browsing the prints here, but didn't enjoy being policed and made to feel like a criminal. A very bizarre and hostile way to treat a customer. read more

It's a shame that the owner or whoever the older woman is to the shop, is so nasty and rude, because Pageant has some good prints. I have bought many things there in the past, usually when she is not there, but the last time I was there, I was browsing and she suddenly closes the front door, like what, am I going to run out with a $20.00 print? Then I went outside to look at the $5.00 table, I had already chosen two prints inside that I left on the side as I did not want to take outside with me. She comes out and says where did you put the prints you had in your hand? I said I am taking those and I left them inside on the side. Then she acted like she just wanted to keep everything in order. Well, I went back in and went up to the register and told her, look I have bought many things here and you basically just treated me like I was going steal something, which of course she denied. The point is, I have not gone back there since, she lost a good customer, I am a serious print collector and she is completely delusional because nothing she has is THAT special that you can't find on ebay or etsy. read more

In a shoebox of a East Village store lies one of the most interesting specialty shops in NYC. The diversity of prints are stunning: advertising, animals, architecture, American history, anatomy. And that's just the letter "A." Botanicals, calligraphy, and caricatures by famous political cartoonist Thomas Nast round out the B's and C's. What drew me were the 19th and 20th century prints of New York. Sorted by neighborhood and borough, flipping through this selection was like taking a time machine back to Olde New York, to a time when the Lower East Side was full of shtetls and tenements, rather than boutique hotels and nightclubs. I can't recommend this store enough: definitely for the gifter who wants to purchase a special something for a someone-special. read more

During my recent visit to Pageant prints, I was ever so excited to visit what had been advertised as a unique and special print shop. However, we had the complete opposite experience. As we walked into the shop, the owner stared us down from the door, without any greeting or welcome. As we walked around the shop and admired the prints, we asked from some assistance to which she did the very bare minimun to help us. I wanted to leave the shop and cry due to her rude customer service. My girlfriend took my arm and looked me in the eye and said take a breath and whispered "You can do this". As we went to pay, the lady insisted her card machine was not working. This was the only store in NYC that we came across which did not take card and with this shops reputation, you would think they have all avenues of payments available. As I left the shop, I thought to myself I will never return again. I don't usually write reviews on my experience in stores however, I had to do this to warn further shoppers. read more

Great place to visit! A wonderful variety of prints and prices. You can create your own set of prints. The owner is very friendly, despite other comments. She told me the shop story, how her father started the business after WW II and all sort of interesting things. Definitely I recommend it. read more

This place is really up my alley and I fell in love with it the second I walked in. It is pretty small, but that does not reflect the breadth of its selection. I'm pretty sure I spent an hour or more browsing its antique botanical and animal prints, maps, and kitschy retro magazine ads. This place is ideal if you are looking for some apartment wall decor or gifts. I'm pretty sure I'll be going again soon for some Christmas shopping. read more

I bought a $90 print and ended up regretting it because the female shop owner/sales person had such a rude and unwelcoming attitude. When I tried to inquire about the provenance of the print and learn about the history of hand painting on the lithograph of seashells, her snarky reply was, "just look at the back of the print. hand printing was discontinued because of the industrial revolution." Not helpful. One would presume that a print shop owner of vintage prints would be delighted that a curious customer cared about history. Makes me feel like the print might have been a sham. read more

Cool prints, but the owner should stay home; her negativity is contagious. I was browsing the shop at the Union Square Holiday market and while taking a photo of a print to text to my mother, and with no prior greeting, and in Tourette syndrome style, the owner rudely screeched at me "make sure you tag me"!! It was startling; I wasn't publicly posting the picture nor did I indicate to her that I was. It was totally bizarre behavior for a shop owner, particularly at a cheerful Christmas market. It was more like the that of an unsocialized 4 year old. She then gave me an attitude when I asked if a print came in a smaller size, as sometimes artists make smaller, similar renditions and in the most condescending, arrogant tone possible told me that they were all originals and proceeded to complain to me about another stupid customer who had asked something similar. I then asked her if the market items and store items were all available on her website, and she angrily and inexplicably stared at me for about 30 seconds- it was so bizarre- before telling me she didn't have time for that. A simple no would have sufficed. Friendliness is always nice, but she couldn't even manage basic civility. I spent about an hour browsing and was on the verge of buying but she was so abrasive, bitter, condescending and aggressive that I decided to find another vintage print shop, as I didn't want to give her my business. read more

Racially DISCRIMINATING. This review is for their little booth at the holiday shops in Union Square. It was on a snowy day (12/9), and I was browsing with two of my friends (Caucasians). We had two umbrellas, and I was covering a friend while we were browsing. Although I was not standing super close to the prints, the owner seemed concerned that water from my umbrella might drop on her (already individually covered) prints. She asked me to step back a bit and as I realized what she was concerned about, I promptly apologized and stepped back. Then she turns to her husband (or a co-worker) and says: "ugh well she's foreign." So I quickly looked up and said: "because I'm foreign???" I am Asian, and apparently being Asian automatically means "foreign" to this business. My friends and I quickly walked away, and the friend I was covering with my umbrella got so upset for me that she went back to call her out on it. Whether I am "foreign" or not, what does that have anything to do with in that situation? Also, my other friend was standing next to me with HIS umbrella and she did not say anything to him, nor did she seem concerned. read more

Most prints aren't that unique. The owner isn't the friendliest. Some prints are well priced while other are definitely overpriced. The prints are well organized into logical categorizations. There's definitely something here for everyone and a great stop for a late gift. read more

I had a great time looking through all the prints at Pageant Print Shop. I don't even remember how I first discovered this store, but I'm glad I did! Before coming here, I didn't really know what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised by how big of a variety of prints they have and how organized it was. I'm a fan of animals, especially marine life and birds, and boy did they have plenty of both. I ended up buying two prints on my first, and as of writing this review, only visit here so far. One of the prints had various birds on the print in black and white, including multiple species of ducks (which are some of my favorite birds) and the other print was in color and featured multiple marine mammals, including a whale and dolphin. The man who worked here was very nice and I appreciated the fact that the store was heavily air conditioned considering that I was there in mid summer. The store has a fantastic collection of map prints both from all over the world and for New York City and the even though I like maps I didn't end up getting any map prints, but I recommend that if you're looking for old maps, this is thee place to go. read more
