I've been in this business several times and not one time during a visit did the employees even speak to me or acknowledge that I was even in their store. Pages has really lost a lot of the books they used to have in stock and now just seems to be a little hole in the wall to get coffee where you can sit in the semi-dark store and chat...but not with the employees, cause apparently they don't chat to customers or maybe, just me. It's all good though, I won't be going back. read more

Thanks to Yelpers, we popped in this morning for some much-needed coffee. My husband and I both got lattes that were flavorful and not at all bitter. I also purchased a mystery book from a local author. The woman behind the counter was quite friendly. I wanted to get a couple pieces of locally crafted pottery, but only one large mug was available. I grabbed a card for later. Really nice bookstore, local crafts, and great coffee. We were going elsewhere for breakfast, but there were some pastries and dessert in a small cabinet, if you prefer that. Great shop! (No pics - sorry - I needed coffee!!) read more

I love coming here. The business has changed ownership since my last review and has improved remarkably. The drinks are always delicious and it's one of my favorite spots to get out of the house or the office and bring my laptop and work for an hour or two. They have also added art from local artists and it adds to the atmosphere a lot. I'm excited to see the new additions as they continue to make changes! read more

Cute little coffee and book shop located in the heart of downtown Mount Airy. I stopped in on a weekday morning when there weren't any Mayberry/Andy Griffith-related festivals or events taking place and the town was relatively quiet and mostly empty. When I walked into Pages Books & Coffee, an older man was waiting inside to physically open the door for me, going along with the general "old time" energy of the town as a whole. Not really my thing, but I get what they're going for and why. The town of Mount Airy (and certainly most of the small businesses located in the Main Street area) most likely make the majority of their income by maintaining ties to actor Andy Griffith (who was born there), and more specifically, to The Andy Griffith Show and the fictional town of Mayberry, which is said to be inspired by the town of Mount Airy, NC. Pages Books & Coffee is a relatively modern space in a historical district. After reading some reviews on Yelp, I decided to order the drink that they seem to be known for: a hazelnut toffee iced coffee. It was actually really tasty, and what is really driving home the four-star review for me. There are lots of books to browse through, although, as an avid reader who collects books and frequents various independent book stores on a regular basis hunting for unique finds, this selection didn't do much for me. The collection felt very commercial and definitely was a bit more on the "conservative" side, especially when you got to the non-fiction space. I appreciated that they had an entire section devoted to local subjects / writers, but wasn't able to find something that really spoke to me. The prices were a tad too high for me to feel good about purchasing one. For me, the main point of coming to this place is the delicious coffee. Definitely worth it for that alone. read more

Cute little local book store on Main in Mayberry. Decent amount of seating to relax and enjoy a cappuccino or iced coffee. They also make a variety of frozen frappuccinos and fruit smoothies as well. I stop in here every time we visit Mayberry and usually order a fun coffee concoction and pick up something new to read. Not a huge selection of books but my favorite section dedicated to local authors is very nice to browse through. I love their special greeting cards too; they are so adorable! My kids love the section in the back; happy to see a few books for young readers also. Service is friendly and helpful. Will definitely be back next time we take a day trip to Mt. Airy. I've been coming to Pages for 10 years now, and I stand by the fact that it's my favorite coffee shop in town! With delicious drinks and pastries, and always inviting atmosphere in a shop right on main street, and the ability to grab the local newspaper or check out a local author, this place is truly unique for the area and worth checking out. The café has a TV as well as four two-chair bistro tables and a couch for seating, and I've never come in and been unable to find a seat even during festivals and events like Autumn Leaves and Farmfest. It's also not just a great place to hang out with a friend either, but also great for bringing in a book or your laptop (they have easy access outlets at the back tables and WiFI). It's also worth noting that the place is always kept super clean, and the staff has always been super friendly and professional. When it comes to drinks they have something for everyone from black coffee, teas, smoothies, frappes, ciders, hot chocolate, and fantastic iced lattes and mochas. They also keep their menu interesting with seasonal specialties which can sometimes fall a little flat in my opinion compared to their tried and true drinks but usually are still interesting to try. They may be slow to advertise seasonal drinks, but always feel free to ask about them or ask for a recommendation. The last time I asked, the staff's top three drink recommendations are the Caramel Sensation, Zero Bar, and the Milky Way, and the Caramel Sensation has become a favorite of mine as well as the Hazelnut Toffee! The drinks are also the best value in town by at least fifty cents which really adds up if you're a regular, and they offer a rewards program as well. If you're like me and prefer using a reusable cup they also have no problem with iced or hot drinks as long as the cup is a reasonable size (mine is larger than their large at 20 oz, but they allow it). Pages is also well known for having a small selection of amazing pastries and desserts as well as instant oatmeal cups for the breakfast crowd. There is also a small pop box with sodas, water, and other bottled drinks as well as candy bars and small snacks if pastries aren't for you. Lastly, their book and magazine selection is worth checking out. They offer a good selection of newspapers (USA Today, Wall Street Journal, Mt. Airy News, and the Winston Salem Journal last time I checked). I have noticed that they aren't keeping every paper in with COVID-19, but hopefully, that'll change soon. They also keep a decent little selection of magazines in the back to peruse. The book selection has a whole section dedicated to local authors and locally relevant material, which is great if you're looking to learn more about the area. The rest of the books are more centered around new fiction, current events, classics, hobbies, and religion, but anything you can't find just asks the owner because she's great about ordering books for people and getting them in. Another great addition to their shop is that it has a whole children's section in the back which has lots of great books and games for kids to enjoy. Overall, I can't recommend this shop enough for both locals and anyone visiting Mt. Airy. read more

I visited Pages after my girlfriend mentioned it was her favorite coffee shop in town (she's a Surry County native), and I was not disappointed. I ordered an iced coffee and it was perfectly made, my girlfriend's peanut butter mocha was incredible and I can say I've never tasted those flavors mixed with coffee before. The pricing was very fair for our drinks. There's also a great book selection. The store really makes great use of their limited space within each genre. As I crossed the threshold of this stores new location, a sweet aroma of book bindings and hand-pulled espresso shots knocked me back a couple decades. THIS is what real coffee shops and books stores are supposed to smell like! They ALL used to smell like this, I whispered excitedly as we ordered a spiced & an apple chai, and mochaesque lattes. We browsed shelves of current best sellers, as well as local "Mayberry" goods. The female barista pulled shots and steamed milk, while a slightly less tech savvy matron took orders. She forgot to ring up my cousin, whom ended up paying when the cashier returned. The beverages were...perfect. I wanted to drop our vacation plans and plop down on a chair and thumb through books all day. 5 out of 5 stars, for the pulling me out of-whatever it was that I was in, before I walked through a wrinkle in time and into Pages. It took Sandy only two trips to remember my "usual" and service is extraordinary, beginning with the sweet gentleman who will greet you at the door! I very seldom give 5 stars, but I think that this small, privately owned business is deserving of all 5 (if not more). If you want really good coffee, this is the place to go!! This little coffee shop/book store is located in downtown Mount Airy. If you find yourself walking Main Street, you must stop here!! Their coffee is outstanding. So much better than Starbucks, by far. I've been there twice, both times ordering something different and I have loved everything! Yesterday, I ordered a small frozen gingerbread latte nonfat with whip and it was out of this world!! A small is 12 oz and is definitely big enough for me. Most recently, I have been going to this store to get Lattes and Cappuccinos, because the closest Starbucks is 45 minutes away in Winston Salem. I have been going once a week, and getting a large Almond Latte, which totals $4.50. They have all been excellent, up until 2 weeks ago.. I went in and ordered my regular Latte..when I took a sip, I tasted nothing... it had no espresso flavor, no almond flavor.. just tasted like hot, bland steamed milk. I wasn't going to say anything, but then I thought, wow, for $4.50, it should have SOME flavor.. I went back to the counter, and explained to the girl who made it that it had no taste.. immediately, somebody else came over - I will assume the owner, a late middle aged woman - and she asked the girl what was wrong, what the drink was, and how it was made; the girl told her that it was made with 2 shots of espresso, "like always".. then I told the owner the drink had no flavor at all, not of almond or espresso or anything... The woman then looked irritated WITH ME, and with a snarky attitude, dumped the coffee out and began to make another, and after it was made, she handed it to me ( without even looking at me, still obviously irritated with ME, for some reason ) and VERY curtly said "Well, I put THREE shots of espresso in this one, so if that's not strong enough for you, I don't know what to tell you." Um.. Okaaaay.. I then proceeded to TRY to tell her that I had been getting a latte there every week for the past several weeks, and they were ALL perfect except for this one, but she wasn't interested in hearing what I had to say, because before I was even finished speaking, she had turned away from me and had stopped listening. Keep in mind, I did NOT complain loudly, I was not rude or short.. I nicely and simply told them that the latte had no taste. Well, I took a sip of the new latte, and the espresso taste was way too strong... but, that's better than NO taste, I guess.. so I went over and added lots of extra cream and sugar to tame the too strong espresso taste down. After thinking about it, I asked myself, hold on a second, exactly WHY DO I come here, anyway? it doesn't matter WHAT time you get there on a Sunday, some guy who works there (one of the owners?) is parked on the sofa with his laptop and paperwork spread out all over the coffee table.... Um, isn't that sofa and coffee table for customers to enjoy? when I go to Starbucks and want to sit on the sofa, I don't see Starbucks employees sitting there with their work laptops all spread out.. they let the paying customers enjoy the sofa. Irritating. Also, the girls who work there never, EVER smile. I don't mean they aren't laughing and joking, I mean, NO smile at all. Um, you cant crack a smile? not ever? not once. they don't smile, they don't make small talk.. they all look like they are NOT happy about being there. That was the same look the woman (owner?) had when she came over to re-make my coffee; looking like she wished she was ANYPLACE else but there. Ok.. so lets browse the selection of books.. small, limited selection, high prices.. Ok.. well, so much for that. All along, I have wanted to like this place.. a cute, quaint, little "mom and pop" coffee bar / bookstore... but the only person who looks like he doesn't hate being there is the guy (owner?) who spreads out all of his stuff all over the sofa and coffee table, so the customers cant sit there... So, after this latest experience where they were VERY curt because THEY didn't make my Latte correctly - TWICE - well, I guess that's it for this place. I will just drive to Starbucks where I know the coffee will be perfect every time, and where the staff doesn't take up the seating areas meant for the paying customers to enjoy. ( So, when the "Big Bad Chain Store" arrives in town, as it eventually will, and has better service, better products, and better prices than the little neighborhood "mom and pop" place, and the little local place gets driven out of business, don't ask why ) COME ON STARBUCKS! read more
