Stopped in to grab a croissant in the morning to go and there were probably 6 people in line in front of me. The line moved super quickly and the service was friendly and efficient! They didn't have English labels on their pastry case so I recommend busting out Google Translate photo edition. I ordered the chocolate almond croissant and a water to go, which was around $5.65 CAD and I think very reasonable. The croissant was unfortunately cold and not very good, so I was pretty disappointed because everything looked good in the case! Maybe I ordered the wrong thing? Usually whenever one goes to a tourist area, the place is either overpriced or the foodunderwhelming.  Not here at Le Pailard. There's a reason why this place is packed all the time.  Fantastic bake goods, drinks and hot foods in the heart of Old Quebec City.  The pastries and breads were light delicious, breakfast sandwiches yummy and the coffees fantastic.  Pricewise extremely reasonable and cheaper then Starbucks. There is a constant influx of both local and tourist that come and for good reason. It was so good that we came here back before leaving and will make this our go to breakfast place next time we return.  Definitely a great local gem in the heart of Old Quebec! Went there on Monday morning early not too crowded counter was full of very appealing pastries, you don t know what to choose. The menu is very hard to read. The croissants very good extremely buttery. The almond one very delicious but the egg sandwich on a croissant was not too good. Satisfactory location for breakfast. The best part about Paillard is all of the options. You have a large selection of pastries, breads, sandwiches, drinks, etc. Being that my friend read a sign for the store that said "best croissant in Quebec" I had high expectations. Sadly the croissant seemed just slightly above average. It was not quite crunchy enough and didn't have the powerful butter flavor that I have experienced with mind-blowing croissants in the past. However, I'd still recommend this location as the croissant was still very good, just not out of this world. None of the pastries I tried really "wowed" me but they were all good. The espresso was tasty! There is a lot of seating inside with both communal and smaller 2-4 person tables. I'll definitely be back to try more pastries and sandwiches. We had some breakfast here. Spacious and self serving breakfast. There are two communal tables. We had a combo matin 7.75$ including a croissant sandwich, a coffee and a fruit cup. The croissant with bacon was good. However, the fruit cup was not fresh. We also ordered three more croissants and found one black fibre ( probably not a hair) embedded in one croissant. Let me tell you, Paillard is a must have if you're in quebec! Their sandwiches were delicious. I got the roast beef and the flavor combination was insane. Those caramelized onions with creamy blue cheese and a kick of horseradish, on top of roast beef was utter perfection. My sister got the rosemary ham sandwich. It didn't sound like anything special, but the mustard they used was fantastic! It had a spicy kick that most mustards are missing. Definitely recommend this sandwich! read more

While their baked goods are very good, their service is absolutely terrible. It takes forever to get one's already-baked baked good & coffee. My wife & I waited almost 20 minutes in line while that 3 staff behind the counter floated around and only waited on one customer at a time. Fortunately we discovered La Maison Smith and had delicious baked pastries and delicious coffee within 5 minutes with the same size number of customers. Perfect bakery to stop for some yummy breads, sandwiches, desserts and coffee. This is a big bakery with lots of tables and chairs to sit down. You can even get gelato here! I felt like I was in heaven with all the pretty desserts and breads in the glass case. If I was in the city longer I definitely would have tried more! I only got macaroons and croissants. Yummy macaroons for $1.65 plus tax! That probably brings it to $2 with the crazy high taxes in Canada, but still cheaper than places in the US! There are many flavors, but the labels are in French so if you can't read French like me.. Just ask. The people are very nice. I got 2 of every flavor.. Fat I know, but when do you see prices that low for these pretty delectable treats. So anyways, I tried the pistachio, chocolate, maple, blueberry, raspberry, and blueberry/raspberry. Most of the flavors had a chocolate cream filling except for the pistachio and raspberry. My favorite was the raspberry and the maple. I also tried the chocolate and almond croissant and the plain chocolate croissant. I think the chocolate almond croissant was $1 more, but totally worth it! Tasted so much better! The bread was perfectly crispy on the outside and moist/soft on the inside. There are only 2 paillards and they are both in Quebec. Late post... One cold snowy day, in the heart of tourist trap Rue Saint Jean in Old Quebec, we stumbled upon this lovely French bakery called Paillard. The place was extremely busy during peak lunchtime, yet we enjoyed the food, ambience, holiday vibe, not to mention a gentlemen playing the accordion in the background was perfect during the Christmas season. So many varieties of breads, pastries, sandwiches & desserts to choose from. We ordered the sandwich/soup meal combo (1/2 ham & cheese sandwich, choice of either mushroom or pea soup), some chocolate croissants and for dessert, some macarons. Honestly, the ham & cheese sandwich was okay, nothing to rave about but the chocolate croissant was délicieux et beurre! Both mushroom & pea soups were good, not too salty as hubby said. Thumbs up on the macarons as well. Overall score... 4 stars for food and ambience. Unfortunately fell 1 star short due to shortage of tables (there's no place to sit!) as well as the confusion of long lines snaking around the place, with no one telling us where to place our food order. We liked this place so much we came here for breakfast twice, and stopped for an afternoon snack today (see the eclair photo below). They have a *great* menu for breakfast. You can get everything from eggs to a croissant. The wait staff is exceptionally friendly and helpful - everyone in our group of four expressed delight at how helpful and friendly the staff are. We really liked the communal seating at the long tables. We were never crowded, and we had plenty of space to spread out and read the newspaper, etc. They have the best croissants ever, and they are *huge*. Normally a croissant does not fill me up, but a couple of the Paillard buttery croissants and I am good-to-go. My wife and I really liked the Fougasse - they are to be found just to the left of the line as it arrives at the counter. They are savory (e.g. olive and feta), made with a nice crusty loaf, and the staff will heat them up for you so they taste right out of the oven. My only regret is that we did not go here enough times for me to try everything! I will greatly miss Paillard when I return home to Arizona tomorrow. Sniff. read more

I got hot choc for an extra 1.20 and didn't realise the cream was an extra 60 cents! Anyway at least it was good.. All on all average.
