The place has great reviews on Yelp and we were looking for the best bakery in Quebec, so I had to try it. The decor is basic. It's very casual and big with lots of seating. We got hot chocolate, coffee an almond and chocolate croissant and another pastry. My. Honest opinion, it was ok. Not bad but also not as great as I expected. My latte wasn't good. It's a nice boulangerie. I almost said little but it is not little. I ordered an abrichot (I'm not sure of the spelling sorry) and it was very tasty. My friend ordered a brioche nature, well I ordered one for my friend because while the staff was bilingual French seemed to be the preferred language (which it should be this is Quebec after all). The service was quick and in under 3 minutes I'd placed my order and had my bread and drinks. The pastries were good. My friend didn't like his hot chocolate he thought it was burnt. Can't leave Rue St. Jean without a visit to Paillard. The place was huge and they had a wide spread of baked goods. We tried a chocolate croissant and a couple of other sweet goodies. The croissant at Paillard was really delicious. Super crispy and airy and what I originally thought was a large croissant disappeared after just a few bites. Personally, I think Le Croquembouche has the best croissants in Quebec City, but the ones at Paillard are definitely still very good. Better than the croissant I had from La Boite a Pain, and way better than the one I had from La Maison Smith. We also got the tuna and tomato quiche. The quiche is a very small portion as it is very thin. The crust was just okay, but I didn't like the egg filling. It looks like they cooked it at too high of a temperature and the eggs curdled. Surprisingly, I've had better quiche at some local brunch spots in mid-town Toronto than here in Quebec City. If you want fluffy airy quiche, but don't mind an under-baked crust, then La Maison Smith is definitely the best place to go. If a flaky crust is important, but okay with an average egg filling, then Le Croquembouche is the place to go. If you desire a fluffy airy quiche with amazingly flaky crust, then go to Toronto as I still haven't found a spot in QC that has it. :) Overall, the croissants are awesome here, but I would go elsewhere for the quiche. read more

A cute little spot on Rue Saint Jean, it was a good place to get some sweets if you really need something but the line is so long and the pastries come out stale and cold, when they really should be heated up and fresher. I highly recommend their Vanilla Oatmilk Latte with maple syrup, it's like a French vanilla on crack! Their almond croissant was delicious as well -- it had a super crunchy exterior, with a sweet nutty filling in the interior. I also tried the cheese croissant which tasted good but it was 80% regular croissant and 20% cheese. If they sprinkled cheese on top of the pastry or simply added more to the inside, I would've enjoyed this croissant much more. The service is pretty fast though lines can become long very quickly. This place has tons of reviews and tons of traffic. Unfortunately it was not tons better than what I can find in Vancouver so I won't be coming back. I had the croissantine and lemon tart. The pricing is very reasonable. The atmosphere reflects that of a foodcourt cafeteria. There are lots of seats and usually a line up. There's lots of variety of pastries and sandwiches. The interior is also air conditioned. Personally I don't like strong a/c because it dries the air which in return dries the food and chills it though I didn't order anything hot here. The chocolatine (croissant with chocolate inside) was a tad on the small side, the crust wasn't very flaky and the inside was a bit "hollow". The lemon tart was a bit too sweet, the whipped cream was also sweet so it clashed with the filling. I recommend La Maison Smith (Cafe Smith) instead. read more

I enjoyed the pastries so much at Paillard that I came back for breakfast two days in a row. My favorites were the chocolate almond croissant and Nutella bread. The croissant was flaky and had just the right amount of almond paste and chocolate pieces. Definitely not too sweet. Although the Nutella bread could have been stuffed with slightly more Nutella, I still really enjoyed it. I liked how the brioche bread was buttery and slightly sweet. Pair either one of these pastries with a small mocha and you are all set for the morning. In addition to a variety of baked goods, Paillard offered sandwiches, pizza, soups, salads, and gelato. I definitely wanted to come back for lunch/dinner, but with so many dining options in Quebec City, I only managed to come here for breakfast...which I don't regret. Paillard is in the guidebooks as one of the best bakeries in Quebec City, and so we visited. It is a lovely space with many options and friendly staff. When I asked for a recommendation, he suggested the cookie , which if I recall, was a shortbread. We chose a chocolate bread, which was tasty, but not half as good as the one at our hotel breakfast. So, I suppose everything here tastes good, sooooo much seating, and again, a nice place to spend some time. But I'm not sure it is the best bakery in town. Omg how do I even start to describe the experience of their croissants in my mouth! I had asked one of the tourist guides for recommendations on croissants. Laughing at me he said if you want real croissants that are made with real butter and not margarine like you Americans do, go to paillard, that's where I go. Came here for breakfast early morning. They have a vast selection of delicious looking pastries that would make anyone's mouth water. If you want a pastry, line up and tell them which one you would like. However, if you want to beat the line - get something that has cooked food in it and you can skip to the cash register to order but just know that you'll be missing out on some good looking pastries. We ordered 2 combo matins and 1 baguette with jam (Parisian combo) Combo matin comes with a croissant with egg and bacon (or ham) and hollandaise sauce (it's a breakfast sandwich), smallcoffee and small cup of fruit for 8$ - a pretty fat price in my opinion. You can upgrade you drink both in size or change to latte, cappuccino, etc for an extra cost. The croissant was very fresh - deliciously soft on the inside with a beautiful crispy crust on the outside. The egg and bacon is freshly cooked - egg comes with both yolk and white - not a scrambled egg. Coffee tasted good. Fruit cup was small and average but can't complain. Fruit was a mixture of cubes cantaloupe, pineapple, honeydew. The baguette was really good. Had a good crunchy crust and soft on the inside. Choice of 3 different jams - vanilla pear, salted caramel and berry compote. For the berry compote and it was delicious - could see the blueberries in the jam. Just the right amount of sweetness too. Overall would definitely come here again for breakfast or even just an afternoon pastry/coffee snack. FYI - they also have an ice cream bar. read more
