Not only did this feel uncomfortable, but it also felt like I was being shamed for not tipping enough, even though I had already tipped more than 20%, which most people would consider a standard and fair tip for good service. It's not that the therapist wasn't deserving of an extra few dollars--it's the way the expectation was communicated that rubbed me the wrong way. If the business wants to guarantee employees a certain level of compensation, that should be built into the service price rather than relying on customers to meet a specific tip amount. My suggestion would be to eliminate tipping altogether and simply advertise the true price of the service upfront. For example, if the goal is for the therapist to receive an additional $20 per massage, then charge $80 for the massage and clearly state that gratuity is included. This creates transparency, eliminates awkward tipping conversations, guarantees fair compensation for therapists, and ensures customers know exactly what to expect with no surprises. With how the situation was handled, I'm questioning whether the employee is actually receiving the full tip amount. Overall, it didn't feel transparent or trustworthy, and for that reason I will not be returning.
