I recentlyly got back into paintball after a 10 year hiatus and was happy that Paintball Sportsland was still open after all this time. I've been several times in the past couple months and always have a great time. The times I have been here the staff/refs are friendly and the players are all cool who just want to have fun. I've enjoyed playing in "the town" which is normally for airsoft but paintball can play there as well. I love the woods ball fields also. I have my own gear so $20 for all day play and all day air is a good deal. Their paintball prices are competitive and they allow you to bring in your own paint. My only suggestion would be to add a CO2/Compressed air refill station on the fields somewhere so you don't have to climb the hill to refill your air tanks. Overall, this is not the fanciest or newest place but the people are cool and you will have a good time. read more

I go here all the time as it is my local paintball field. It's definitely not the most high tech or fanciest field in Maryland, but it is a fun, safe, and local place to play paintball at. The refs are attentive, and want everyone to have a good time. The prices are the best out of any paintball place near by. I can't recommend it enough. read more

I started playing paintball 20 years ago at PBSL. First time I fell in love. Nice place, decent assortment of fields. I stopped playing there because they made everyone buy field paint even with own equipment. That policy has since changed (not sure when). I recently booked a large party for my sons and their friends to try airsoft. Haven't played at PBSL in years and not much has changed. Our ref was great, patient with our group of 12 year olds, moved fields at a good pace, and easy going. Fields haven't changed much (a couple of netted-off dead boxes which is nice), prices to play are okay although I found the ownership a bit challenging to work with especially in light of the amount of money they made from my party (15+). As was the case two decades ago, there's a lot of foot dragging when getting onto the fields. 20 years ago I'd lose 30 minutes waiting for walk-ons running late, safety briefings, and the refs waiting for word to move out. Our party's "2.5 hour" time to play shrunk to 2 hours which didn't come as a surprise (and part of why I don't play there anymore). I've played paintball in NY, PA, MD, DE, and VA and PBSL STILL remains the slowest to get players on the field (and every other field has safety briefings, walk-ons, chrono, etc). When PBSL say they open at 10 you can bet you won't start playing until at least 10:45. Other places tell you to arrive at 9:30 so you're either on or walking to the fields at 10am. I recommend paying for a full day rental (airsoft or PB) as its only a couple dollars more and you'll get at least 4-5 hours play vs 2 and leave when you're ready, not because you ran out of time. PROS Close to Frederick so it's convenient Decent fields & refs Own paint with own gear CONS Time wasting No significant changes/improvements to the fields after 20 years (tower on right side of castle is a rickety death trap for an adult) The boys in our large party had a lot of fun and my two sons want to play again so we'll likely return out of convenience. Paintball is a bright, colorful, close quarters shooty thing. Airsoft is all about being tacticool. This would be according to my darling son, and I agree, as long as you can sense the sarcasm. Paintball Sportsland was recommended to my son by a friend who also plays Airsoft. Once or twice a month we make the one hour drive so that he can run around outside with all of the other tacticool people on the field that day. Since I don't join in, but I do pay for his activities, i can tell you that the price is reasonable and I appreciate that each game has a ref involved. There are often younger players on the field, and I know that they are encouraged to jump in but are watched to make sure that they stay safe, even when they are not there with an adult in tow. I also truly appreciate that everything is shut down for a 30 minute lunch break. My son finishes his day tired and dirty, but not hungry and dehydrated. He generally packs a sandwich but they sell pizza at only $1 per slice, or they will have a pizza delivered. The only restroom facilities are a single portapotty in the parking area. The office carries a few items for sale, and has waivers available for players under 18. Anyone under the age of 18 must wear a full face mask while in the field. My son would like me to add a few things from the player's perspective. The cost for the day is only $10 for use of the field. They do have equipment available to rent, but run out on busy days so it's recommended that you call ahead and reserve what you need. Renting everything adds $40 to the day, so most regular players buy their own gear. The referees make sure to alter your fields through the day, and there are 7 fields and multiple games to play per field. Paintball and Airsoft are played on the same fields, so you should anticipate finding paint and paintballs in odd places. Don't wear your favorite clothes (unless, like other tacticool people, your favorite clothes include vests with multiple pockets, combat boots, and retired army fatigues.) There aren't many airsoft and paintball fields in the area, so I'm glad that my son's friend pointed us towards Paintball Sportsland. read more

Drove nearly a hour and a half here for airsoft, upon getting g there they said there were no gun rentals during the day. There was no communication to know that rentals would not be available that day. A waste of time would not recommend going unless it is close. read more

I love this place. I originally went there 5 years ago for my kids birthday. I have been trying to go back ever since. I finally went back yesterday, it's the best price with the best fields and really good customer service with the concern of everyone's safety and satisfaction of enjoyment. I will return again. First of all, as a disclaimer I would like to say that this was my first paintball experience so I don't have a frame of reference. I'm basing this review entirely on my one experience there and nothing else. Positives: This facility is huge, with several different fields. Every field I played on was well laid out and provided interesting terrain. And the staff is very friendly and helpful. And I felt they did a great job making sure everyone was safe. And "The President" game was exceptionally fun. Negatives: This may have been unique to my visit, but this place was horribly disorganized and seemed to be so by design. There were only two Refs in our region, and between 50 and 75 players of incredibly varied skill level. This led to nearly two hours of 30 vs. 30 elimination games wherein most players just hid behind barriers sniping at each other. And since I was a newbie and equipment renter, I wasn't exactly hanging in with the machine gun toting crowd. I would recommend splitting up groups like that into more manageable size. Anything over 30 gets to be very unwieldy. And, if possible, group skill levels more efficiently. It's definitely not fun for me to play with the dead eye machine gun guy, and I doubt he found it all that challenging either. Finally, I highly recommend avoiding coming in the summer, unless you LOVE heat and sweat. read more

PBSL is such an amazing place to go... I am getting into this sport this year for the 1st time and credit the staff (+a few reg players) for gettin me into this sport! I waited for a few visits b4 reviewing as I wanted to make sure consistent so this review is from July 18, 25 and Aug 8, 22, 29 of 2015 Its been consistent the entire time - all staff are helpful and friendly.. If theres an issue w- field/cheater/safety/etc they will drop what they are doing to help OR go n get someone to help me! One big thing to me is safety - I have a govt job and am a single dad.. I cant go down for xx days because of someone elses stupidty! I feel very safe when Im out there as i see the refs JUMP on people for safety issues. One really surprising thing they have, which sadly alot of other fields dont, is staff knowledgable about advice (gear, guns, n how to fine tune your equipment) AND if my $1000+ gun rig goes wonky, someone on hand absolutely has been able to step up, get me fixed up, n back out to play! Also - the prices are SO affordable for this guy right here! lol... I can come on a semi regular basis and not sell a kidney to come hahaha.. Customer service means an aweful lot to me - PBSL helped educate me not just on how to play, gear, what to do.... but more so that it really is a community sport! Stop, n help others - pass on what you know as others have passed on to me. Sure, Im one of the older regulars going out at 33yrs old haha, but this old man is still stomping some butt out there! I may forget alot of the staffs name, but they know me and my game play by now. Its always nice to roll up for a fun day. They do have that new youth-oriented Tippman Low-Impact paintball there I have seen in action.... so I cant wait until my 5yr old can come on out n shoot it up a bit with daddy! So thnx PBSL! One of the local youth baseball teams in Frederick MD held a fundraiser here today and it could not have been more of a success or more fun! Gary and the entire staff at Paintball Sportsland did a great job assisting our large party from the signup process to getting organized with all the equipment to playing out on the amazing courses. They were all very professional and helpful during the planning stages of the event and were very accommodating to hosting a group fundraiser! It was a great weather, great field conditions, and tons of fun for all the kids on the team and adults who joined them in playing! This was an amazing paintball experience whether this was your first or tenth time playing. I highly recommend this establishment for any weekend excursion or fun activity you are looking to do in the Frederick area. All around great staff, experience, and courses! Could not have been happier with how things went today. We really hope to be back soon and hold a similar event like this again. read more

Woman on the phone was impossible to hear so I couldn't schedule a session. Called the next day and was told to just show up. Get there and she offers me air soft when a guy had told me that paintball was available. She also had me fill out forms for everyone when I was here for a birthday party a mom was allowed to put siblings on 1 sheet. We left and will not be back. read more

Horrible place. Terrible service. One friend got injure and the ppl work there told us to follow the team to the other field immediately even tho he saw our friend was bleeding really bad. No first aid kit at all. The masks were really dirty. read more

I recently travelled here with a group from work and by the end of the day we were very unhappy with our experience. I'm not going to just complain about this experience, because it wasn't all bad. Positives: -The organization of handing out the equipment was well done and explained, they gave a good run down of the weapons and how to use them. -There was lots of area for playing, although we didn't use all the fields they were decently well kept. -The equipment was well maintained with the exception of a few things, the odd broken magazine that the repair guys fixed quickly. Negatives: I'm only going to list a few, -The safety brief was halfway through before I knew that it was happening, I just thought it was some guy speaking really softly. I had no idea he even worked there. -The refs were pretty awful; if they weren't being generally disrespectful, they were just being unprofessional and threaten to shoot players. I didn't quite understand why our ref Matt needed to carry a machete with him, despite the warm weather I'm pretty sure I was not confusing Maryland with a jungle in Belize. -Second part on the refs; they weren't really able to control either the match or the regular players. I'm sure they like playing air soft or paintball together when they're not working but let's not make it obvious that you're clearly friends. Adding to this, the refs wouldn't step in when it was quite obvious the regular players weren't counting their own hits and disregarding the close distance rule as they fired their high powered personal weapons against small children that we're hiding behind a wall. -As for the management, the day manager that was there was pretty dumbfounded when we tried to complain, other than to say that's not what he would have done. He didn't do anything wrong, but there was no resolution from the complaint. The owners weren't willing to speak with us when they arrived, but did manage to call us about an hour after we left. All in all, I will never return to this business for anything. I feel bad for the staff that did a good job because their work was ruined by the awful staff and refs. I will also go so far as to not only to not recommend this place to friends and coworker groups, I will actually seek out other venues for them to go to opposed to this one. read more

I had my sons 13th birthday party here, in the beginning it seemed fine until I went in to get the 4 pizzas we ordered which we were told would be provided at 4pm after the kids were done playing. The manager hadn't even ordered the pizza yet at 3:55pm. All she said was I forgot to order them I'll do it now and half of the party left before the pizza got there 40min later. When we asked for some sort of discount on the pizza she said really? Like it was crazy to ask for one. Then after we finally got the pizzas and we're told that she was gonna work out a discount for us instead of trying to fix the problem she just left with her daughter while we're standing outside. Also my fiancé was playing with the kids and they ran out of balls, we were supposed to get 3,000 paintballs instead they gave us 1,000 and charged him $50 for 1,000 paintballs instead of $28 for 1,000 like it's advertised after they already shorted us 2,000 paintballs. The place is disorganized, they don't communicate well, and they don't care about their customer happiness. read more

A couple of weeks ago my friends and I played a game, me and my other friend had our clothes stained after asking the employees if the paint did in fact stain and they said no. The owner/management, when informed that their products did in fact stain kept on insisting that It doesn't. IT DOES! my clothes are now ruined and the customer service sucks. The situation was not handled property when confronted. IN ADDITION, the ref. Was lazy and uninterested in our game. As we asked him to change fields he seemed as if he would of rather stayed in one spot the whole two hours. I would not recommend anyone to spend their hard earned cash at this place. read more

We came with a group of 13 players for a private birthday party package. I was in contact with Gary the owner by email and he answered all my questions about the venue and logistics promptly and professionally. I was able to make a reservation for the party very easily. The staff were very friendly with us, flexible, and helpful and we were able to host an amazing 30th birthday party that was a blast for everyone! (pun intended!) We had many first time paintball players including myself, and safety and equipment rules were all explained clearly and thoroughly. We were taken to two fields for playing as well as the practice range. All the playing areas were well kept, despite the slushy and muddy post snow conditions! The package included pizza and we were allowed to bring in our own cake, drinks (non-alcoholic of course), and snacks as well, which was very kind of them. Our package included guns, face goggles, CO2, 3,000 paintballs, and 2 pizzas. I recommend budgeting to purchase extra pizzas and paintballs if you have as many people as we did! Our referee Matt did a great job accommodating the games we wanted to play and facilitating the games. They made playing paintball and celebrating the birthday very easy and fun for us! The only complaint that we have was that some of the other staff were throwing snowballs over our heads and at the ground near our group while we were getting briefed about the equipment and game play. Some of us were hit by snow as they were horsing around with each other which was very mild but distracting and unprofessional. Other than that, the entire party had a fantastic time here! I'll keep it short... customer service in the shop sucked, refs rushed the games and didn't even allow enough time to get ready for the next match. Didn't even seem to be busy when my group went there and they just rushed us through the different areas. Negative- when we played in field 4 I saw rusty nails sticking out near a bunker. Really fun place to go for paintball or airsoft, I've been there a few times over a course of 2 years, and they always make it fun for everyone there. The refs are knowledgeable on paintball and airsoft, and always mix the maps and game modes up. The pro-shop has everything you need and the parking is nice. However... They rotate maps a bit too much, you'll play 2-3 rounds and then have to hike to a different area, and the maps themselves are more of a duck behind cover and blind fire, no real open areas except for speedball. Conclusion: A great place for anyone to go and play Paintball/Airsoft, everyone there is very friendly and I'm always having fun. read more

This place is great for airsoft. Only $10 if you have own equipment. Cheapest around. You can play from 10-4. They have 7 fields that you get rotated through. However, depending you may only get through 4 or 5. Sometimes you play across 2 fields for a game. Staff was very friendly. read more

This is a great place for airsoft an paintball. All the refs are very nice and ansewer all your questons. The owner nows wat he is doing and runs the place very nice. There are 6 feilds to play at and one jist for airsofting.There are only a couple monor problems with paintball sports land. I mostly airsoft there but i have done paintballing a couple times there. Since airsoft and paintball share feilds, all the feilds exept for the airsoft map have paint on them. On the walls, on the forest floor, mostly all over. But the paint doesnt make any difrence to the actual gameplay. The only other minor problem is that since this is mostly a paintball place, all of the forts, walls, rooms, and cover are man made. This dosent efect me and most airsofters, but some people say that since airsoft is more tactical then paintball, the cover should be a two story wooden fort. These problems are very minor and are mostly looked past. Always have had fun here, and looking forward to comming back to play here for a very long time. read more

I am writing this review for my little sister who is a little upset. The employees told her that the paintball paint was washable. As soon as she got home, her clothes were immediately washed but even afterwards there were still oil stains ALL OVER from the paint. I called the owner to tell him about the stains and he said there is nothing he could do. I explained to him that his employees shouldn't be informing customers that the paint is washable! I felt that he really didn't seem to care about the issue. He was very rude about it. He even kept on insisting that the paint is washable. He also didn't even apologize. I hate to say this but this is terrible for his business. I told him I was going to write a bad review and he CLEARLY told me he didn't care and he hung up on me. He has very poor customer service skills. My sister explained that the paintball game was really fun but she's rather disappointed about the stains. I highly recommend people to wear clothes they can toss out afterwards. read more
