I love this place. It is right next to the train station on the L and G line. Unfortunately, they no longer have bring your own booze, but I really don't mind since I am too busy painting. The instructors can be a hit or a miss. Some walk around a lot to provide feedback and others not as much. I've been here 3 times with all different instructors. Regardless, there is a great time to be had. They give you a smock, canvas, brushes, paint colors, and etc. They teach you how to mix colors and you learn different brushstrokes. Every painting comes out beautiful and unique to the individual, so don't worry about making mistakes. The instructors are helpful if you have questions, but I wished they would circle the room more often. They also take pictures of you to post on their FB page. I haven't been to the new Manhattan studio, but I think I might stop by and try it out. It makes for a great date night and I see a lot of couples go together. They never rush you, and you can take your time to finish a painting because a lot of students add final details to their works. Totally worth it! read more

There are only two things that will get me out to Brooklyn: live music and this painting lounge. For those Manhattanites that worry this is too much of a trek for them, it is just a short ride on the L Train from Union Square to Lorimer Street Station and this lounge is located literally across the street from the train station next to a pizza place and across from a diner. It is actually easier and faster to get to than many places within Manhattan. I purchased this class through a Zozi deal and chose to attend on a day when they were painting sailboats and water as I love sailing. You start on a blank canvas with all supplies set up and the professional instructors really walk you through every step of the process of painting (like how to mix colors, when to use certain colors which may override other colors, when to use black and white in particular, and even how to blend or fix mistakes as you paint). My class was particular cool because we learned how to paint reflection of the sailboats in the water. Within 2.5 hours, I had my first painting ever and it was . . . good enough for me to ask them to have it framed for me, which is an additional $35 and they have a wide selection of frames from which you can pick and they will drill the canvas into the frame for you right then and there. I highly recommend you do this though only a few people opted for this in my class as I now have on my wall a piece of artwork that I myself painted (even put my initials in the corner) and how many people can say that about the art on their walls . . . I prefer to put up art and photos of which I had a part of on my walls personally. :) I actually thought the 2.5 hours length of the class was ideal because there is a tendency when painting I learned to overpaint which can do more harm than good to the net result. In fact, learning to strike that balance between painting, embellishing, but not overdoing it so that you have that ideal result was an interesting skill to try to cultivate that day. For one day, you can ponder those same dilemmas that many famous artists have mulled over the centuries (should I add more paint here, what shade of color do I really want here, how do I create depth and reflection here, etc . . . ). The classes are extremely fun and entertaining and you will walk out with a beautiful painting regardless of your experience level. The less experienced you are the better because then the more shocked you will be by what you have been able to paint. read more

I took a class here because TimeOut NY said it was a good place to meet friends. Did i meet anyone? NO! but, no big deal. I was too busy concentrating on my painting to want to chit chat anyway. So, it was a 3 hour class for 65 dollars. Was it worth it? Sure, because it actually became a 4 hour class. The time flew by and the teacher was not rushing us at all. He was pretty nice, i left and people were still adding last minute touches. by the end of it you feel pretty confident to just add your own little flare to it. Everyone came with their own bottles of booze as did i. I was confident that I was going to finish my bottle and just enjoy painting drunkenly crappy BUT when i noticed that I was actually painting O.K. I ended up forgetting about my alcohol and wanted to make sure every line on the canvass was straight! I looked around and it looked like everyone else forgot about their booze too! At the end of the class they offer to frame your art for around 35$. Depends on the kind of frame you use. I didn't get mine framed but a few people did. I highly recommend it. I went by myself and enjoyed myself despite the fact i didn't finish my alcohol nor made any friends. The sense of accomplishment you feel after a class is almost like a high. The last time I played with paint was probably in elementary school, and I was able to walk out with a pretty good replica! Not gonna lie, I was proud. The instructor stood at the front of the room and painted with us as she gave instructions, so we saw what she was talking about. She also walked around and helped anyone who needed it. Even though everyone painted the same picture, no two were the same. My class lasted 2.5 hours and it absolutely flew by! This was my first time doing something like this and I can't wait for more. Relaxed, friendly atmosphere. Plus the music was on point! Came here a couple of Months ago with a friend, using a groupon. It's fun. The instructor was friendly, she made a connection with everyone. I have an art degree (nose in the air haha jk) so I really just came supporting my friend and for the experience and I must say its a great time! The instructors show interest in your work and helped people that fell behind. It's kind of a paint with numbers except she suggests where to put the color and some let their creative juices flow which was very interesting to see. Fun time would def do it again ! read more

This was an awesome yet random activity to take part in- so much fun and the fact that it's BYOB- pure awesomeness! My friend and I actually purchased a google offer deal long ago for a two hour class. We were able to pay a small difference online and upgrade to a longer class for a painting we liked on the calendar. It's as simple as seeing a piece of artwork you'd like to work on via their monthly calendar and signing up for it- super straight forward and easy. If the class is filled for the time/date, you can be put on their wait list and will be emailed if something opens up. Painting supplies, smocks, cups and wine openers are provided. The instructors guide you through the process and you really do end up leaving with something you could potentially be "proud" of. I sure as heck was. We did the three hour class called "A romantic walk" - such a cute and colorful painting. I swear people were so focused on painting that they didn't have much time to drink. We couldn't even finish our small bottle. Pathetic I know... but the Monet in me was too focused on making a masterpiece LOL I'd definitely return! Awesome. A friend organized a painting party to celebrate spring and we had a great afternoon. Most of us hadn't even attempted anything artistic since high school and we were nervous about painting, but our instructor Casey (I'm probably misspelling) provided all sorts of comforting, jokes, and Oprah-like affirmations in addition to painting instruction. I went from being embarrassingly nervous to wanting to start painting more. So yeah, it's a pretty great way to spend your saturday. Super duper crazy awesome lovely creative supportive inspiring fun. We painted our versions of Klimt's "The Kiss," and while ours won't likely be mistaken for the real thing, they are pretty beautiful in their own ways, and it's fun to see how we each put our personalities into our own li'l masterpieces, and how they came to life in such a relatively short period of time. Kevin's supportive, friendly, positive and knowledgeable. A perfect introduction to acrylics if you've never painted before. The materials are included. Definitely takes all the fear out of it and just makes it fun. Everything should be BYOB, don't you think? There's a great wine store (Vine Wine) just down the block. Pick up a bottle, Kevin's got cups and a corkscrew ready for ya. And the intimate little studio is literally just steps off the L or G train. I could see this being a great date night idea. Fast Facts: Class was fun; teacher, Casey, was great; owner, Kevin, was very helpful in rescheduling my class; and the BYOB revocation did not take away from my experience at all. Super chill environment, good for the whole spectrum of painters from the accomplished artist to the artistically curious. This was no paint-by-numbers class, and in fact was a relaxing, exciting and productive way to approach recreating a masterpiece. I'm no painter, and was joined by a few classmates in being slightly worried about successfully producing the assigned image, but with the stenciled transparency and gentle guidance from the instructor, Casey, everyone was comfortable painting at their own speeds and skill levels (or lacks thereof). Casey was very hands-off in a positive way. Painting Klimt's "The Tree" invites a lot of personal expression/interpretation, so Casey made occasional announcements and offered general guiding principles and personal tips, but pretty much gave us the reins to make the painting happen. His approach worked, too--each Tree turned out just lovely, and amusingly different, too. A definite success, and a great place for some girl time, guy time or alone time. I'll definitely be back. I experienced paint night for the first time tonight. Our paint instructor was Chris and he was great from start to finish. Some ppl came in late after we and he was able to accommodate them and bring them up to speed while still managing to keep us engaged with the next steps. I didn't know it was BYOB so I ran to the store on the corner and bought some wine and that's what smoothed eveything out for me. The painting we did was "A Walk In The Rain" and I didn't think it was gonna come out great but I was extremely pleased with the finished product. This place is the bomb!!! I also bought the Groupon MONTHS ago and was super annoyed when 3 days before my booked class, I still didn't have a date (Groupons are terrible for the single ladies). I was a little worried that it would be a paint by number type thing (or "not hipster enough" as my friend likes to tease me), but I was surprised how much the students actually did and also how individual all our paintings turned out. I went to The Painting Lounge this week for the first time and they have gained a loyal customer. It was really the best thing since sliced bread. I used to love art classes growing up and somehow I have gotten away from it as an adult. This class brought me back to my roots! I attended the Keith Haring "See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil" class. I'm still amazed I was able to create a replica that I can hang in my apartment. Really great instructors seem to be the norm. And, let us not forget the BYOB - *shakes tambourine*... One night, some friends and I got to talking about hobbies we always wished we'd picked up, and a few of us all said we wished we'd done something more artistic, but that now it's probably too late because we'd suck so hard at painting or drawing or whatever. The next day, I happened to walk by Kevin's studio and saw his sign advertising art lessons, and figured what the hell. I walked in, met Kevin, and took a lesson about a week later. I'm really glad I did. I mean, I'm not going to be selling my paintings for big bucks anytime soon, but it turned out to be a lot easier and more fun than I thought it would be, thanks to Kevin's really easygoing teaching style. He knows how to break paintings down into their elements, then walk you through how to create them yourself. Art can be intimidating, but Kevin is really approachable and friendly. I walked out of my first lesson feeling like I knew the basics of how to make colors, use a brush, create depth, detail, the whole thing. And I'll definitely be taking more lessons. I want to get better at this. read more

My boyfriend and I bought a zozi deal and went to Brooklyn just to use it. It's in a very convenient location, right across the street from the L subway line from Manhattan. The place is very small (no bathroom or sink, you'll have to use the bathroom next door) but it has enough room for painting. In the beginning you first trace the outlines of the painting from an already-made drawing onto your canvas. Then the instructor goes over how to mix the colors and fill in those lines. Overall, it was fun as we walked away with great paintings (as did the rest of our class) which I was very impressed by, but the class wasn't very relaxing. Our instructor went way too fast and I felt like I was being rushed to constantly paint without a break, which we had to keep up for 2.5 hours. I thought I could go at my own pace but then I wouldn't know how to paint most of the painting as the instructor would suddenly be 5 steps ahead. Eventually, I decided to just stop listening to the instructor and do my own thing, which made the experience more enjoyable. I don't think full price for the class is worth it but definitely go if you can get a deal! Tip: if you want a relaxing time, don't let the instructor rush you! Paint at your own pace and it's okay to fall a little behind, just ask the instructor for instructions when you are on the right step. read more

Great time. It's definitely a fun thing to do if you're looking to try something a little different. I went here by myself as a way to do something relaxing but still have some social interaction. It was really nice, although not as relaxing as I thought. Everyone was pretty focused on doing a good job on their painting, so there wasn't as much talking and drinking. The instructor was nice but went a little fast. Luckily, they were fine with people lingering after the allotted time and making last minute finishing touches. The brightly lit, one-room, glass-front Painting Lounge studio boasts high ceilings, white-washed walls peppered with framed paintings imitating the greats- Picasso, Matisse, Edward Hopper, and Georgia O'Keffe to name a few... how in the world do they expect to have us complete one of these monumental pieces in just two short hours and potentially a little buzzed from the BYOB invitation stamped on the entrance way?! Our instructor, Julie, was smiley, encouraging, and patient. With a blank canvas of her own nailed to the wall, she took us through each step-- and layer by layer our masterpieces began to unveil... we each were given a palette with the necessary colors, brushes, and reference art card for the painting we were mimicking that evening. When instructed to mix colors, we were given even ratios of "globs" to combine... there was low chatter among groups of friends, healthy pours of wine, and friendly instruction from Julie... the entire class was relaxing and what do you know, there's now one less blank wall in my apartment now as a result. It was such a pleasant way to spend an evening with a group of girlfriends. We even engaged with another group of friends sharing a table with us. The Lounge is laid-back, has a convenient agreement with the pizza place next door for us painters to use their restroom and is right across the street from the Metropolitan Avenue subway stop. Definitely something I would do again and I recommend to others. read more

I was here was my mother and a couple of friends yesterday for a class. I found this place off of Groupon when I was trying to find a fun activity to celebrate my mother's birthday. This place was great. The instructor Beata, didn't quick catch her last name, was lovely and fun and interacted with everyone. She made sure everyone was doing good and who ever needed help she tended to them. The atmosphere was great, my side of the bunch were a bit loud BUT it was my mother's birthday so it was acceptable haha. Overall, it's a great place to paint, great place to celebrate a birthday or any celebration, great music, great instructor, and a great place to have fun. My friend and I had a great time at the painting lounge. Even though we were all painting the same picture, each painting was surprisingly unique. The instructor was really nice, offering constructive criticism as we went along instead of just letting us make a mess which I definitely appreciated. Note: They haven't been BYOB for about a year. I suggest coming a little early to get a good front row seat near the instructor. The class was very relaxed and a lot of fun. BYOB which makes for a calmer atmosphere and helped a little with artistic motivation in use of colors and techniques. This is was my first painting class and I would definitely do it again! This place was so much fun. I painted Starry Night with my mom one night midweek. The location is easy to get to from Manhattan and it's a pretty quick trip. Next door there is a grocery so you can choose whatever snacks you might like and of course it's BYOB as well so you bring your beverage of choice. My instructor was the owner and he was so much fun but also patient and knowledgeable. I had so much fun here that I convinced my family to try BYOB painting over Christmas in Texas. We ended up going to a chain. My experience at the chain wasn't near as satisfying and fun as the one I had at Painting Lounge. They are truly the best at what they do. read more

I did a Groupon deal with a group of friends. We couldn't really get the project we wanted as it was a longer class (and none of us wanted to pay the extra cash) but we had a really good time none the less. Surprisingly enough we didn't drink as much as we thought we would've. Everyone really wanted to do a good job. The instructor was good and patient. The place is really small but that's OK too. I'd go back but only with a deal. I don't want to pay the full price for the class considering how many places and deals like this pop up on Living Social or Groupon etc. But, if another for the PL comes up, I'll be sure to scoop it up!
