Breakfast was great, as were the home baked treats that could be found throughout the day. The bad: there was only wine and soda in the fridge. No ice and no water. The common areas were cluttered. I don't care to stay someplace and see piles of junk on the floor. I stepped into the kitchen at one point to look for some ice for my tea and the cleanliness of the kitchen was very questionable. Food had been left out of the fridge on the counter, and it was the middle of the day. Against my better judgement I DID have breakfast the next day and I haven't gotten sick, so there IS that! The ugly: I am very sensitive to smells and there was a heavy presence of cat urine. I just couldn't escape it. i never saw a cat, but I sure did smell it! The curtains in our room were falling apart and they were all water stained. I could look past all of that, but when I discovered what the pillows looked like I was done and we left a day early. The pillows were not encased in a protective cover before they were placed in a pillowcase and they were all stained and disgusting, one even had a hole in it. Even that didn't phase me too much, but when I helped myself to a pillow case that I found in the hall closet it looked like there was a booger on it and I just lost it. We were not given any kind of hassle when we checked out early and it would be my guess that we were not the first. As others have mentioned the outside looked like something out of a horror movie, but I obviously wasn't put off by it as we did check in. According to past reviews the renovation of the front porch has been going on for YEARS, and it looks pretty trashy. If you don't mind all that I mentioned, by all means stay, but I will not stay again. If you can get past the cat smell and the disgusting pillows and the dirty kitchen, it IS a beautiful B&B. I need to note that it took me a long time to write this review. It really IS beautiful, and the owners really are lovely people, but I just couldn't not say something. Had everyone else that has written reviews been totally honest, I probably would not have stayed there. This place could be SO much better with a little more care.

Lovely ambiance of jazz always playing seems comforting in so many ways. The hostess ate breakfast with me and helped me with photos, directions, advise. She was sincerely lovely. They went out of their way to help me in my travels. Epic hosts, food, complimentary drinks. I have never been to a place this unique. Usually you worry about small things at hotels bc they are so sterile. Here its like staying at your grandparents house or favorite aunt and uncles. I suggest this location to people who love the wholesome things in life without the upper scale crust lingering on your permanent white pillowcases. You don't need to worry about that here. (I would not suggest this to people with serious allergies or extreme standards.) Everything felt comfortable and relaxing. I love it! And I will continue to come back. Best bed and breakfast! We couldn't find door 9 which was frustrating late at night with no one to call. It was the only door inside another door where both 9&10 were. Once in the room someone else's food was in the fridge. We needed the fridge to put food in and had no choice to put our food in a fridge that was not cleaned out. The fridge and A/C tan all night and that bothered my husband. The rest of the room looked clean, the beds were pretty comfortable. You have to remember your at an older motel, so it was dated. The other issue was in the morning a big dog ran at me growled and barked. I'm very nervous with dogs I don't know. The owner did not pick up on the fact that the dog terrified me... he just said no but did not grab the dog. Despite those things I do feel as though Arthur tries to make you comfortable, he apologized for the food in the fridge. It is quaint and it's beautiful hill country. I also learned the next morning that he drew a map on the envelope for where to find our room. I would have appreciated if he had described it over the phone. I can see the effort that was made. They do bring you coffee and cream in the morning and we were brought cookies. Having a fridge that was not cleaned out led me to wonder how well everything else is cleaned. I don't mind dated as long as it's clean and comfortable. There's room for improvement.

We didn't camp here, but drove through through the campground. There are many shady spots with electric hookups and nearby water pumps and even better, river views. There's also a nice playground for campers with kids. The bathrooms are really clean and well-lit. Each includes a shower with a bench and is handicap-accessible.

I enjoyed camping at Blanding Landing over the Labor Day weekend. It was easy to make and pay for…read moreour reservation online; however, contacting them was more challenging. I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to check in before they closed and nobody answered the phone or returned my message. In the end, I decided to wing it and arrive late anyway. After all, I knew which campsite was assigned to me and I paid for it. Turns out that I did the right thing. In fact, even if you don't have a reservation, they have a procedure for accommodating you if you arrive late. There's a phone number to call to find out which sites are available and then you check in properly in the morning. There's an attendant who lives at the camp grounds as well as sheriffs and other security folks who make regular rounds. This made me feel extra safe. There are outhouse-like bathrooms as well as a proper bathhouse with showers. All of the toilets have toilet paper. Each camp site has electricity, a pump nearby for water and a fire-pit with grill. The grounds were well maintained with mowed lawns and healthy tree cover for shade. The sites were good for RVs and tent camping. Not all of the sites were good for hammock camping where the hammock is suspended between trees. I heard that there's a beach along the Mississippi River but I didn't see it myself. Instead, I saw a boat-launch area with a ramp into the water and a dock. There were also paved roads nearby that were nice for cycling. I saw a large playground for kids. The campgrounds are located about 10 miles from any town but getting there is gorgeous. The land is very hilly - so hilly that you wouldn't believe that it's Illinois. One day we drove 10 miles to Galena for breakfast and it was a very enjoyable excursion. We also drove to a vineyard and winery (Fer Ged Aboud It) which was also a great field trip. One of the only problems (and there's nothing the campsite can do about it) is that there are regular freight trains that zoom right by the campgrounds on a regular basis. They are very loud. So loud that you can't have conversation.

Our daughter has sensory issues and is fearful and overwhelmed easily however Karla and Brittany did such a great job as soon as she finished she said I want to do this with a group of friends sometime. I can honestly say from when they discreetly weighed them (as they do everyone to make sure they are in the safe weight limits) to when we said goodbye it was the most positive experience for both of them. The gps took us seamlessly to the door even though it was in the middle of a very picturesque country setting. There was plenty of parking and an area to sit and wait until it is your turn to board the vehicles to go to the start of the adventure. The two girls who were their tour leaders were outstanding, Brianna & Karla were fun, funny and attentive to every detail so the adventure through the treetops was not just fun, but safe for everyone. They took all the time each person needed to ensure they all knew what they were doing and felt safe while doing it. Another person and I were not doing the ziplining but they let us join on the ride up to watch the training and the first couple runs they then came back up, picked us up and gave us a ride to a beautiful shelter area to sit and wait for our zipliners to finish. For those doing the treetop tour it included multiple runs of different lengths and heights all along the guides were snapping photos which could be purchased at the end of the tour. Karla and Brittany were amazing at keeping them safe and entertained the whole time they were zipping along free as the breeze. When the group was about to do the long run to finish the adventure one of the ground crew came back and picked us up so we could watch them do the last run and jump off the pole enjoying a couple seconds of safe free fall.

I used to take my littles there multiple times a year, but they are now 12 and 9 and even they are starting to take notice of how trashy it is getting. All that staff seems to be allowed to do is nicely ask them to stop, which is not doing anything to correct the situation. Someone needs to start pulling some passes for the day so the word gets out so that the behavior doesn't kill this ski hill!!!
