My mom and I came here for lunch on a Thursday. The restaurant wasn't crowded, so we were seated fairly fast. Our server came over to get our drink orders as we reviewed the lunch menu. My mom ordered sesame chicken , which she said was too sweet. And it was! I ordered Hunan chicken (extra spicy). The spice level was nice but I didn't love this dish. Way too saucy and not enough chicken. I definitely regret not asking which veggies came with this dish. I am not a water chestnut fan soooooo yeah. We both enjoyed the egg roll and hot and sour soup. I go to this restaurant since I moved here in 2006, I love their food and the authenticity of their Chinese dishes. I tried everything and they were amazing even my family from out state loves their food. But over the years this is my all time favorite dish Mandarin combination, can't get enough very yummy! This is our go to take out Chinese in Trussville. They have a wide variety of options. I tried the pepper chicken for the first time and LOVED it! It's crunchy with a heavy spicy pepper taste. It mixed well with the sweet red sauce that comes with the egg rolls. Ate to go from Palace in an airport parking lot with a friend. My first impression of this restaurant is very favorable! Pricing is reasonable, especially for the portions. I ordered Mongolian Beef, which I was told was one of the best dishes, and it did not disappoint. There is some heat to it, and a slight sweetness - a touch different from others I've had. Fried rice was pretty plain; I think to accentuate the sweetness, if there's a next time I'm in the area, I'm going to go for steamed rice. Quantity was just right, since I saved the rather large eggroll for later. (FYI - I wasn't a fan of the eggroll - a bit bland.) Of all my years coming to this area, it never occur to me to try this restaurant out especially me liking Chinese food. I went on a Sunday afternoon which was a bad timing since everyone was coming from church and the place was already forming a line. All I really wanted was to place a to go order which you'll do that at the counter equal bar. My first impression is that I've never knew a normal Chinese restaurant would have a bar which is a first. The employee that took my order was nice and the price for a lunch special wasn't bad which you'll get a main course, fried rice, egg roll and a small hot and sour soup. Everything was good including the chicken with broccoli that had a tasty sauce on the dish and I would have prefer my fried rice to have more than just one scoop. read more

Yikes. I ordered the Chicken Lettuce Wrap at lunch for $12.** It looked good upon arrival but when I tried it, it was just hard and crunchy, I couldn't find any pieces of chicken. The equivalent of chicken bacon bits. When I told the waitress that I didn't like it and didn't want it, she didn't say a word just turned and walked away. Didn't ask me if I wanted anything else or even offer to fix it. The person I was with ordered Chinese Vegetables for $10.** and got three pieces of broccoli and a ton of water chestnuts in a coagulated gel. She still paid for hers despite the pitiful serving size she received. Then when we paid, we were again not spoken to. Horrible attitudes and the food wasn't even worth putting up with it. If you want local Chinese, Happy Wok is the place to go. We will never betray them again by going elsewhere. read more

The service was ok but the food was beyond subpar. The salt and pepper chicken was bland, hard, and possibly one of the worst Americanized Chinese dishes in my life. The sizzling rice soup was nothing I've ever had before. First off, there was no rice. Not initially. I had to add puffed rice which is crazy. And the soup was dry tasting. How?! Then there was only 3 shrimps and a few slivers of chicken. The only decent thing were the egg rolls I got but they taste store bought. I wasted money and I'm unsatisfied. Smh read more

This is a nice Chinese restaurant in Trussville. This is my second time eating their lunch specials here but I am reviewing my latest visit. The food was okay I really loved their hot and sour soup with the chips. My daughter had the egg drop soup and she loved it. I tasted it and have to agree that is way better than other locations. I ordered the General Tso's Chicken which it was way to sweet for my liking and supposedly it has the spicy symbol next to it on the menu. I guess spicy doesn't necessarily mean it's spicy. The only thing they will add to make it "spicy" is a couple of hot dried red peppers that can easily be put to the side, so be conscious about that when ordering. Same thing with my mother, she ordered the Hunan chicken and she said it was way to sweet for her. My daughter had the Chicken and Broccoli and really liked it but comparing her dish to the other two it had the same sweetness, which seems that a lot of there dishes come with the same sauce. The fried rice that comes with the dish is good nothing you wouldn't get elsewhere. I will however come back and try other dishes if not just for the soup! read more

We have been going to the palace for the last 16 years. Great hot and sour soup and awesome egg rolls. We went today and roaches ran across my wifes hand on our table when we first sat down. We got up and left. They offered to move us to a different table and I said we were going to eat somewhere that doesn't have roaches. If you see roaches in the dining area it means the kitchen is VERY dirty. I hate to see them go downhill, but sadly we are done. read more

The portions were perfect and the service was awesome. Huge disappointment! This place came highly recommended, but the food was incredibly disappointing. Great service and a clean dining room, but the food was bland and poorly cooked. It tasted like the sort of thing you can buy in the freezer section. Add in the higher than average prices, and it was a depressing experience. I can only guess it's the service that draws customers. I've been eating at The Palace, or just "Palace" as the sign indicates, ever since it opened. Although my girlfriend and I eat all over Jefferson County, we have gone to The Palace more than any other location over the years. The prices are affordable, the staff are efficient, the restrooms are clean, and the food has been very, very consistent over the years. It should be noted that this is largely American strip-mall style Chinese food. It is not trying to be authentic Chinese, and thank goodness for that, because I love the food the way it is and I have my authentic place for when I want it. I really don't like servers trying to sell me on items or trying to make conversation when I'm out to dinner with someone, and The Palace is one place where I have happily never had to deal with that. They take my order and quickly bring me my food. They also have lunch specials that are a great value. read more

The dinner prices don't equate to the quality of the food. I paid over $14 for a subpar meal of sesame shrimp. The dish was dry and tasteless. In fact, I placed a to - go order but was told by the cashier/hostess that I wouldn't like what I ordered. I was taken aback and asked her if she was suggesting I order something else. She agreed as I tried to reorder the same dish. She insisted that I wouldn't like it. Needless to say I didn't order the original dish but instead ordered the aforementioned sesame shrimp and it was horrible. I didn't even get plastic ware or an egg roll to boot for $14. This is by far the best Chinese Place in Birmingham. Yes, even better than PF Changs. The hot and sour soup is always the bomb. I've never had a bad dish here and tonight was no different. This used to be good food. Last couple of times there I was very disappointed. I ordered a shrimp dish. Shrimp shells in my food and the shrimp was tough (over cooked). I complained and nothing was offered, not even an apology from the manager (that was the person to whom I made my complaint). I won't go back. read more
