Placed an online order but when I got there I wasn't even sure if it was open. It looked so dark and the open sign wasn't on. Thankfully it was and my online order was ready. I got the General Tso chicken lunch special. Everything tasted old. Chicken wasn't crispy and needed more sauce. Egg roll was HUGE but mostly hard cabbage. Overall I didn't really enjoy but glad I only paid $11 for it even though it was a waste. Sad I didn't even get a fortune cookie though lol. read more

We were looking for a new Sunday spot for Chinese and we found it! The food was so fresh and hot. We got the sesame chicken and the steamed chicken with vegetables. It was incredible. I stopped to get gas and really wanted some fried rice. Searched Yelp for a 4 Chinese takeout and this place came up. Man, was this a good choice! I walked and was pleasantly greeted. That's always a good sign. I placed my order for some House fried rice and crab Rangoon. 10 minutes later, my order was ready. The food was a little pricey for takeout, but the portions were sizable. The space appeared clean and quiet. There were seating options available as well. Nice experience for takeout. I didn't feel rushed and the service was pleasant without any yelling. A new asian restaurant has opened in Vestavia. Opened just 18 days ago, China Bistro is the latest "Chinese food" joint planting roots in shopping center off Rocky Ridge. Right next door to Subway with the new Publix being constructed a few doors down, I expect CB will be getting much more foot traffic as they grow in notoriety. The layout is much like other similar eateries. There's a medium sized dining area with tables and chairs with simple decorations. A small order counter and an adjacent clear door fridge holding bottled water and sodas. Their menu is very standard with all the typical dishes. There was nothing that really stood out and I didn't inquire as to whether they could make dishes that were not on the menu like say... Singapore mei fun? For this rainy evening, we decided to phone in our order. By the time I drove there my food was waiting as promised. Our quart container of egg drop soup was as expected. It was warm and tasty and enough for the 4 of us to get a nice sample. The shrimp fried rice with no soy sauce was also stir fried well. It was seasoned nicely even without any soy sauce. The portion on the fried rice was not as large as my other usual place, New China, in Bluff park. In fact all the dishes here were not as large as the portions from New China. Their sizzling chicken was delicious! It had a similar taste to Moo Goo Gai pan but with less veggies. The thin slices of breast meat were seasoned nicely in that delicious white sauce then tossed with mushrooms, cabbage, carrots, baby corn and zucchini. The Pepper steak was on par and had plenty of sliced white onions and bellpepper. Finally we tried the Szechuan beef. Their take on it had a little more a "tomato" flavor either from a paste or perhaps a touch of ketchup. It gave it a sweeter flavor almost like the "sweet" part of a sweet and sour sauce. Also stir fried with broccoli, onions, zucchine and carrots, this also had a nice kick as it's one of their normally designated "spicy" dishes. They have a standard lunch menu as well and a section of Chef Specialties such as Triple Delight, Happy Family, Three Delicacies and Surf and Turf. Now that I have a menu, I am tempted to try one of their specialties next time. In that area there are no asian fast food so I suspect CB will get their fair share of foot traffic especially when Publix opens. I would give the food 3 stars. It was passable. The meat was a little dry and beginning to show it's age. The vegetables were decent. The rice acceptable. BUT the owner and his wife were unfriendly at best. She in particular only speaking a few words: drink, order, then throwing the check on the table. I know she speaks English as I heard her on the phone taking orders. So if you want average Chinese food and unfriendly service go there. You won't see me. read more

Our family has been ordering take-out from China Bistro for several years. the food has always been consistently good, until recently. The last order included honey chicken, which had been very good. This time it was not. The chicken was over cooked and the honey sauce was thick and gritty with sugar, and without much honey flavor. Tonight, l went back to General's Chicken, to avoid disappointment. Unfortunately, this chicken was also over cooked and included very little sauce. It appears that they may have a new cook, since the food previously had been consistently good. When spending more than $60 on orders for the family and then being disappointed with the food, I am not likely to return. Next time it will be The Black Pearl or Mr.Chen, in Cahaba Heights. I hope that China Bistro reads their reviews and will take steps necessary to return to their previous quality. read more

We've been curious about trying this place out since everyone is trying hard to support local businesses right now due to the virus. We ordered their house fried rice, house egg foo young, and moo goo gai pan. Our food was ready quickly as we ordered in the restaurant on a busy Friday night. It was still steaming hot when we got it home. My husband enjoyed the house fried rice. The egg foo young had a ton of meats piled on top of the egg which really impressed us. I just wish that the sauce was a little thicker the way that it's traditionally served. My daughter liked that her moo goo gai pan was a large portion, but the sauce was bit too bland so she had to "doctor it up" I'm hoping that it's just still trying to get the grand opening kinks worked out since they have really good prices. I hope that this place is successful. I always want to see family businesses thrive. Their prices are good and I am glad to see another restaurant open up in the area. read more

Saw this pop up on new places to try. It's about a mile from my house and craving egg drop soup I decided to run up before closing. It's located next to where the old Western used to be in Vestavia Hills. It's a small shop with about 8 tables close together filled with people having a nice chat between tables. I got our food to go this time but the portion sizes I saw were fair and steaming hot. The miss up front was super sweet. I'm not sure if this is the China Bistro that was near Patton Creek or just a common name. I order Coconut shrimp, egg drop soup, pork egg foo young, crab ragoons( pricey but def tasted unique in a good way), and Mongolian beef. Overall the price was pretty standard. Everything was so hot I actually burned my mouth when I got home, ha. The food was super fresh and I was very impressed. The Mongolian was my favorite, alot of places have a very sweet syrupy taste to their and I could taste the sear on the meat and the sauce was closer to a savory than a sweet. VERY freaking good. I felt the portion sizes for the coconut shrimp was a little small but frankly the shrimp was huge and delicious so you can be the judge. Egg foo young had a really rich brown sauce that I loved and the soup was classic Egg drop. Crab ragoons were def my favorite overall, that and the Mongolian beef. Def will be returning. read more

First time trying this place, which is conveniently located on RRR by Publix. I ordered takeout and it was ready within 10 minutes. The food was hot and fresh when we got home. The egg roll is probably one of the biggest I've ever seen. I was honestly shocked at the size. The Mongolian chicken could have used a little more flavor, but all in all it was really good! I finally tried China Bistro because it is so close. I am pretty discerning when it comes to Asian food and have been frequenting another one for their Sichuan menu. It is takeout only. It is pretty much an American Chinese restaurant. Their egg rolls are a meal in themselves and are absolutely the best in Vestavia. Hot and Sour Soup is delicious as well. The Mu Shu Pork is fantastic and if you get the dinner portion, expect it to last 2 to 3 meals. See the attached pics. read more

Rudest people ever!! Went way out of our way based on reviews, walked in and waited for someone to appear. A lady walked out from the back and answered a phone call w/o acknowledging us, then spent 4-5 minutes back and forth on the phone while we are there looking at her waiting to place an order for 4. Already knew what we wanted. While on the phone, she answered a second phone call- then continued with the first, hung up and gave us a finger to hold on while she took the other phone in order!!! Don't know how the food tastes and will never give them my $$, don't expect folks to stand there endlessly while you take phone in orders!! In person customers get handled first!!!! read more

This place is a godsend for when I need a quick snack or meal! They have absolutely the best spring rolls and egg rolls that our family has had in Birmingham over the last 10 years. The owners are so very nice, and we have not had a bad experience yet. Their hot and sour soup is wonderful, and their chicken/beef dishes are pretty good as well. I'm fairly new to the area and China Bistro has become my favorite restaurant for Chinese food. They have a nice seating area for dining in. I called ahead and placed my order over the phone for take out, and it was ready when I got there. Their menu has more than the the typical selections you would expect. Standard decor, but the chef cooks everything perfect. I'm working near by and thought I would check it out, and since the first time I went all my orders have been cooked and seasoned perfectly. I love Kung Pao Shrimp very spicy. It was mildly spicy the first two times I ordered it so I thought I would ask for extra spicy. Normally at most Chinese restaurants that would mean just some extra peppers added to the stir fry. But this one was so extraordinarily spicy that i could hardly catch my breath. I am extremely impressed with their cooking. I will definitely come to this location anytime I'm near. Great job guys. read more

We noticed that they were having their grand opening yesterday and thought we would support them. Ordered lunch and got the sesame chicken and sesame shrimp and a stir fried vegetable meal. The chicken and shrimp were tasty and the vegetables were fresh and tender and actually the best thing. Lunch comes with egg roll and soup (no soup for carryout) and was reasonably priced. Overall, we thought it was very typical Chinese take-out (a good thing) and a good addition for our local restaurants and I'm sure we will eat there again. read more

It takes guts to open a new restaurant during a pandemic when people aren't going out to eat as much as they used. I Just happened to see China Bistro when I was checking out the status of the new Publix (it hadn't opened then, but it has now--I'm just late writing this review). There are tables in China Bistro, but they are shoved against the wall. It's basically take out only, though I did see some high school kids flaunting the rules and eating in. There are ample Covid precautions--plexiglass separates you from the cashier, and there is a jar of clean pens for signing credit card slips and another jar to deposit used pens. But enough of pens, let's talk food. Sometimes I remember to call ahead and sometimes I don't order until I get there. I've never waited more than 10-15 minutes for my food, regardless of how big an order I place. There is a large selection of the typical Americanized Chinese food you'll find at most Chinse restaurants, plus a couple of items I've seen some places but haven't seen other places (tomato egg drop soup, for instance). All of the food is very good and made to order. Special requests are honored with no problem. Prices are more than reasonable. The location is convenient to me. The triple threat of good food, great value, and good location makes this my new go to for Chinese food. No pics to share, despite my many visits, but I'll be sure to get some next time. I've had the moo shoo pork, the Mongolian beef, the Mongolian delight, surf & turf, all of the soups--nothing has disappointed yet. read more

Soooooo I am going to have to give this place another try when they get settled!! Today was opening day & I went because it's not many restaurant choices near my job. I got the Sweet & Sour Chicken lunch with the egg roll & for good measure, I got a veggie spring roll to try it out. I was far from impressed. The rice was like white rice with scrambled egg scattered. The Sweet & Sour Chicken was just sauce. The rice nor chicken had any seasoning! And no vegetables! The egg roll was the best thing I ate! Their egg rolls are made with beef by the way. The spring roll was also bland!! My coworker & I were not impressed. Will more than likely drive the extra mile to Mr. Chen! I always get food Togo because of my short lunches, first visit I got back to my work and didn't have anything to eat with, second visit was ok, third visit I found out the lunch special only includes soup if you dine in. If I'm going to pay the same price I want my soup that I pay for either that or give me a soup discount. I even offered to bring my own bowl in but the soup is for dine in only. I get the policy but don't understand the principal. Give me a legit answer as to why I can have my soup. read more

Vestavia doesn't have many Chinese food options so my family was excited for this place to open. I typically judge a Chinese restaurant on their egg drop soup and dumplings when deciding whether or not it's worthy enough for a return visit. Both items at China Bistro were top notch. I really wanted to like this place. It is close to work and home, so it is very convenient. But I doubt if I will return any time soon. I got the Hot and Sour soup. I could duplicate the taste very easily. I could go to Publix and get a quart of chicken stock, mix in a little corn starch, and way too much vinegar. That was is the soup. Bland with way too much vinegar. It had to be the worst Hot and Sour that I had ever had. It looked beautiful with a large amount of very fresh vegetables, but no taste but vinegar. My wife got the Mongolian dinner and said it was Okay, but very different tasting. I go the Kung Pao dish from the Chef's Specialty menu , but I wonder if the chef was anywhere close to the restaurant that night. The dish was extremely bland. It was listed as a spicy dish but I have had spicier grits than that dish. The meats in the dish were obviously cooked separately and were delicious. The problem was that the vegetables were cooked together and nobody added any sauce that I could detect. In this spicy dish I found one red pepper. THe dish looked beautiful, and the vegetables were obviously very fresh. The complete absence of taste in anything except the meats was very disappointing. I hope that this restaurant does well, but it will have to do it without my patronage. Maybe I will try it again when the chef actually returns. I spent over $30 and was not pleased by the food. As much as I hate to pan a restaurant that is just starting they need to realize that they have a problem. read more
