Also they serve tandem coffee with free refills. Can't get better than that. In addition, their breakfast potatoes are banging. Yep, banging. Flat out, this place is amazing. I swear by it any time somebody asks me where to get a good brunch in the Saco/Biddo area. The food......no words can explain how good it is. No matter what you get, it's guaranteed to be unreal. If you're getting a breakfast entree, you HAVE to get the palace potatoes. Just do it like Nike son. Banana bread? Just stop it. I've never had better. The bacon, egg and cheese deluxe?! Too. F*cking. Good. I could list off everything on the menu but you get the point. We went to the palace diner on our way to Boston from Portland. We heard it was a can't miss stop and it exceeded all expectations. The diner itself is in an old dining cart from 1926. It has all the character and culture associated with this time. The diner had a community feel right when we walked in. We started with the banana bread that was slightly toasted sprinkled with sea salt. It was delicious and we were legitimately sad when it was done. We thought nothing could meet it until the breakfast sandwich came. Everyone there was very friendly and welcoming, the waiter recommended great spots to see on our trip down the coast. I got their breakfast sandwich with baked eggs, bacon, cheese, and jalapenos on an English muffin, it was the best breakfast sandwich I've ever had. We also ordered the lumberjack breakfast and upgraded it with fried chicken, best decision ever. The pancakes were so fluffy and had a hint of lemon, the fried chicken had a great coating, eggs cooked perfectly, and potatoes are seasoned and crispy! We were so full after but didn't feel gross because everything was real and fresh. I would literally drive hours just to get here and it's worth it. Pictures just can't do all this flavor justice. This quaint little train car is not in need of any review from me, you or the Mayor. Off the beaten tourist path in Maine, business is always booming - simply nonstop. They close at 2:00pm...because they can. Can 'we'.... and I do mean the Mister as well, both feel this is by far the BEST breakfast we have ever eaten. Nothing in wonderful New Orleans, my beloved Ohio, awesome South Carolina, Georgia, California and yes, even Texas, rivals this place. We...(and I apologize for the half missing food in pic) shared the lumberjack and still left bits on our plates. The potatoes are perfectly crisp, as is the bacon....and it's REAL, thick bacon. Not that paper thin stuff. The eggs automatically come with cheese blended in, and the pancakes (flapjacks as they call them) are truly a secret recipe - not a pre-mix. Best fried chicken and slaw I have ever had in my life. The chicken is so flavorful, crispy and sprinkled with kosher salt. The slaw was like everything good about a refrigerator pickle except in slaw form. The pancakes had a hint of lemon zest and I have no idea why they were so amazing but they were remarkable. Went here after having some tasty German Beer at Dirigo Brewery down the road (great atmosphere btw) and grabbed a burger (they don't serve the chicken sandwich during the week unfortunately). Anyway the burger was excellent, there special potato things were scrumptious. I guess I read this is the oldest diner in Maine (?). Really cool. Def. one of the best options in town. Today was my 2nd visit to The Palace Diner. This time was for breakfast. We got there 10 minutes after it opened & there was a 20 minute wait. But it was so worth it. This place is truly a gem. Don't let the name diner fool you cause this place has unique full flavor food. The fried chicken & pancakes left my boyfriend speechless. I have lived in the area and found out about this place just this morning and am glad I did. I got there a few minutes before they closed and was greeted warmly. I ordered the Irish Benedict and was completely blown away the homemade corned beef hash was amazing and the hollandaise sauce was great. The waiter was extremely friendly and the food came out fast. Oh.My.Gracious. This place was PHE-NOM-I-NAL! Since my family and I were just traveling through Maine, we saw this was a place to stop-so we did. I don't even know where to begin. Just the outside was perfect to start. Then you walk in to a quaint little Diner and a huge smile on Nick's face. Nick's family owns it...I believe he said they bought it two years ago and sort-of re-vamped the ordinary breakfast menu. Boy did they do it right! Nick was full of knowledge and great personality. At one point I think I even leaned over to my husband and said I'd like to be friends with him...could he come back to TX with us? The blueberry muffin was out of this world. I wish I had one now. I got the Southern Benedict and walked out ready to puke. That's how good it was. I kept eating it until I was completely miserable. We've been longtime fans of the diner, and the food is great. I've eaten quite a few things off the menu. The caramelized grapefruit is worth a try. The breakfast potatoes are everything they should be - crisp, salted, hot. My eating advice - if they have pie, order it before it's gone. My husband's eating advice - get the fried chicken. He says he wakes up dreaming about it. Seriously. But be aware, this is the kind of place where you need to wait patiently for a seat, and if you're seated, you may need to move over to accommodate new diners. It's just the way things are done. I had very high expectations going in and was quite disappointed. I ordered the Lumberjack Breakfast -5 pancakes, 2 eggs, ham and potatoes. Unfortunately they were out of pancake mix so I substituted for a single piece of French Toast. Boy was that a mistake. The french toast was burnt, greasy and soaked in butter. The eggs which I had scrambled lacked flavor. The potatoes were decent but a bit greasy and salty for my taste. Finally I got to the ham which was delectable. Overall not an enjoyable experience. They just lost my business over $0.90. Want to know why, then read on. It's 2015 - take debt/credit. I had to leave my family there awkwardly while I went to the nearest ATM which charges $3.50 since I don't bank there. Nope so I then had to travel and find a credit union blocks away.
