We have been waiting in Scarborough for a nice local breakfast place to arrive ever since the departure of the old Egg & I that was housed here before and they have done a really nice job. The menu is EXTENSIVE and broad ... there are items for every single appetite here and they cook it quick and the service has been fantastic. My last trip, I had the corned beef eggs benedict and it was delicious. Sometimes eggs benedict can be a hot or miss situation with the hollandaise sauce being a key ingredient and they hit this one out of the park. Our server was super friendly and was working her station with the flare and feel of a person working in an intimate diner. They also have a bar area you can sit at if you'd like and it also has multiple TV's and the vibe is fun and old time feel to it as well. I was quite happy to see a new breakfast place in Scarborough. Stacks didn't disappoint. I had a Greek Omelet and my husband the Huevos Rancheros. The serving sizes are huge. We both were very happy with our choices. We split a blueberry pancake which was very fluffy and tasty. Location is perfect, on Route 1. There was plenty of parking. Easy in and out. I was rather excited (and bemused) to see Stacks open a location in Scarborough at the same space once occupied by Egg and I, which also had a location in Portland by the Ramada where Stacks' first location now sits. We decided to give the new spot a try recently for brunch. However, after we were seated, the waiter (who was himself expressing open frustration with how things were being run to patrons) informed us that it might be some 45 minutes at least before we'd get our food. Feeling that it might well take us just as long to leave, pack the kids back in the car, find somewhere else, and get served there, we decided to wait. It took awhile to get our food, though perhaps not quite as long as he'd warned. The food itself was fine - about the same as what we were used to from Stacks-prime. It's the same menu after all. When Stacks was recommended for a breakfast option I was hesitant. You don't usually think gluten free when you think of pancakes but they have them! Gluten free waffles and French toast too! Here's the thing, don't go expecting to be blown away by the food quality - it's not the palace diner or hot suppa, but it is a good solid breakfast joint. Think of a classic Greek diner with a large menu of options and large portions. The home fries have a dusting of seasoning that is very good. We sat at the counter for breakfast, expecting fast service, but despite two employees working behind the counter, they were doing other things. It took quite a while for a waitress to acknowledge us. She said she'd be right back but it seemed like a long time just to get coffee. In addition, there were dirty dishes next to us from two previous customers that sat there a long time before a staff member finally removed them. I ordered the pancake sampler (apple, blueberry, & strawberry) but was very disappointed. I was expecting real fruit within the pancakes but instead the pancakes were thin and smothered with overly sweet canned fruit mixes. The "fruit" compotes tasted very artificial and were inedible. I scraped it off and was left with three small thin bland pancakes. My friend had regular pancakes but was also disappointed with them. They were quite bland. The manager asked me how my meal was and I when I shared my observations he admitted that they use canned compote and stated that those pancakes are more for kids, not adults. (This choice was not listed as a kid's selection on the menu). His comment made me feel as if he was blaming me for making a poor selection. Then he said that next time I should ask for real fruit. We went to try Stacks for the first time today and were a bit disappointed. The food is pretty mediocre. IHOP quality at bougie brunch prices. The base foods, like the pancakes, are okay but they gussy them up with fancy sounding sauces and combos to justify the higher prices. Service was slow but it sounded like they were short a server today and our waitress seemed to be trying her best. I didn't love the ambience. The bar in the center with the big screen TVs and hard rock music felt more like a sports bar than a breakfast diner but that may just be my tastes. Bottom line: food mediocre at high prices. They'll be successful as long as the sit down breakfast options in Scarborough are sparse. We won't be back. read more

Excellent service, clean and cozy restaurant, with an amazing variety of breakfast and lunch dishes. We stayed in Scarborough for the weekend, and Stacks was highly recommended. We ate there twice before we left for home. The creative and seasonal pancakes, fluffy scrambled eggs, as well as delicious and perfectly prepared home fries were definitely worth the trip. Went to the Scarborough location and was totally disappointed. Waited over 45 minutes and never got our food. Other tables around us who arrived after us got their orders. I asked for my check and the waitress actually charged me for my grandson chocolate milk. At least the owner took my bill and said no charge. Totally horrible service. The food is a B-, B at best. Lots of filler food to bulk up a meal, meats are mediocre. The staff, however, are super nice and very hard working. I only go there because it's convenient. I ordered chicken fried steak with white gravy, which came with 2 scrambled eggs & home fries, no toast. so I ordered a side of toast to go with it. My breakfast arrived with several problems . The chicken fried steak was hot and good. There was very little gravy on the steak so I asked to get more gravy. the waitress said sure, no problem except she never said she was going to charge me $3.75 for a very small container of gravy which should have come with the steak. Also both my eggs and home fries were cold. then she brought out the "toast" , it was 2 slices of bread barely warmed up, not toasted. she did take the bread back & brought out actual toast. it should not be that hard to serve hot food and toasted toast. especially since they were not at all busy and at the prices that are charged. Yes for eggs florentine on my first visit w a group, the hollandause raise was great and u was w a group that I think were all pleased ordering both breakfast and or lunch, but may be random as yesterday the potato pancakes my friend and I ordered were overcooked and dry but served correctly w sour cream and applesauce. We shared a side of sausage that was excellent. It's a menu like a New Jersey diner and we were told the owner is from nj, but with all those options not sure what's fresh and good and what is not. This was our first time visiting after trips to the other location. After being seated our waiter took quite a while to get coffee in and took a bit longer to get them to us. All in from when we ordered to when we received our food was roughly an hour. And when we got our food it was cold. I had high hopes given how good the egg and I was (and the fact stacks took over both former locations) but was dissatisfied with the service and quality of the food given the high price. After seeing some great reviews, we wanted to check this place out. Sadly, I'm not sure that we'll go back. My wife's food came out cold, almost like they didn't microwave the sausage enough. We got that fixed, but then struggled to get a refill on my coffee. Waited 10 minutes for that. Finally, we asked for the check, and despite the waiter coming in and out multiple times, he just never brought it. I ended up going to the front desk to talk to the manager (who was also aware of the cold food), and he just said "sorry, we're busy". Noted the wait on the coffee, he just shrugged. Stacks Pancake Co. in Scarborough continues the fine traditions of Stacks in Portland: substantial menu of breakfast and lunch items, large portions, and friendly service. The space is one large room and a counter with stools in the middle of the room, with booths around the sides that are roomier than at many restaurants built when people were skinnier. The top of the booth had a pointed wooden edge that caught my sweater when I got up, and I tripped over part of the mat in the front entryway that was sticking up, which problems I called to their attention. The expansive menu has items as low as $5.50, with most selections under $20. My grilled chicken club sandwich was tasty even though the promised avocado was omitted. I appreciated the hot fries served alongside, though the small cup of cole slaw had more mayonnaise than I like. My wife said her huevos rancheros (a favorite breakfast item) were the best she has had since we visited Tucson. Next time we'll try the corned beef hash (another favorite), though our server said it's not made in-house. Our server was attentive and refilled our bottomless coffee cups from what she said was a fresh pot. The server brings the bill and you pay at the register on our way out. The waiting area was only a few seats and I wonder how that will work out at busy times. Scarborough has a lack of breakfast restaurants and we are glad Stacks is here! read more
