We couldn't decide where to eat yesterday and this came up in my searches and I am SO glad we went! When we arrived, in conversating with the hosts, we discovered that the restaurant had partnered with a basketball team and was in the process of doing a fundraiser for them. They introduced us to the head of this program right on the spot after we told them we were new to the area and are looking to get our kids involved in sports. Our server, Bella, was kind and patient, putting up with all sorts of requests from the kiddos (and us) and was telling us about the area while delivering absolutely delicious nachos and food. I held my step-daughters' small (11 people) wedding reception dinner at Paladin. It was exactly as I had imagined it! Kelly was the manager I spoke to about our requests and our male waiter was amazing! From the delicious cocktails (I tried the French 75), to their fantastic appetizers (recommend the Nachos - everyone raved about them), to the entrees (my Bison burger was top notch!), this place was 5 stars all the way! The restaurant is very cool there's a bar area with high tops and booths. Another dining area with regular height tables and booths. The staff was very friendly and attentive. The food. Was okay. We started with the fried green tomatoes Meh. They used a plain panko and needed to use seasoned and the gloopy cheese that was plopped on top was not very good. Another lighter sauce with seasoned crumbs would be a better way to go We also had fried pickles which were okay I had the cola bourbon meatloaf with collard greens and mashed potatoes. The meatloaf was very dense but flavored okay. There was an over abundance of sauce on it and think they put it up n the collards too which kinda ruined them. Also I usually trim the collard stalks there was a lot of them and they were tough so I wouldn't recommend them. We also had the steak tips which I tasted and they were tender and very good. Two others in our party had the sirloin steak. They gave the wrong orders to them so they switched. One rare one medium. They both were on the tough side. The mashed potatoes were great on all dinners but the green beans were old beans and because of that needed to be cooked longer. They were Al dente which only works on young beans so no one ate them. One person ordered dessert and it was the chocolate peanut butter cake which unfortunately was dry. I had a strawberry basil mojito which was very good. I read through the reviews and we were hoping for better but they missed the mark with our meals unfortunately. read more

Had the pleasure of eating at Paladin last night and my compliments to the chef. Gourmet food, craft beer and cocktails at reasonable prices is how I would describe the experience. We arrived on a Friday night and I can honestly say I did not expect the exceptional culinary experience I had from such an unassuming saloon. Walking in the atmosphere was warm. The hostess who greeted us put me at ease. I felt welcome. Our bartender was Ralph who gave exceptional service. And we also got to meet Jade, the manager. From this experience, Paladin is top notch in my book. For starters I ordered a beer and cider. I wanted a flight, but they don't have flights. But Ralph was willing to let me sample what I wanted to help me select the right beers for my palet. There was a couple next to us who had some house made chips which looked absolutely delicious. It turns out they were. They suggested ordering the specials: bacon wrapped Mahi, with slaw and housemade chips... and stuffed mushrooms. Ordered both and was not disappointed. From the food I had here, I could tell the chef has a passion for food. The bacon wrapped Mahi was just slightly over cooked, but had good flavor. It came with a citrus sauce that was other worldly. The slaw was unique and very tasty. And the chips which were dressed with old bay were so awesomely good. The stuffed mushrooms were also quite delicious. As a matter of fact, all the food was surprisingly tasty. I would never have expected such wonderful food to come out of a saloon in midsomewhere Virginia. I also had wings here. Got a half dozen for $6. I requested them hot and extra crispy. They were not extra crispy, but they were hot. And the funniest part is they did not have a typical Buffalo wing sauce. The base of the sauce had a jalapeño taste and was slightly sweet. Not exactly what I wanted, but glad I had the experience. The wings were awesome. Paladin has lots of seating, a bar, and on this occasion live music. With the great food, drinks and craft beer, if I were a local, I could find myself being a regular here. We recently found out about this place. It's a unique restaurant. The attention given to the decor/details caught my eye right off ...cool vibe. The atmosphere is very relaxing and the seating very comfortable. They even have private booths....nice touch. The service was excellent.....new trainee and she was doing great. The menu has something for everyone. It was our first time and we weren't very hungry so we settled on wings and they were very good. The bar was across from our booth so we noticed it had a good crowd. The bartender made sure to keep the bar goers in good spirits. No pun intended. I have been coming here for the past several months. Despite not having my preferred whiskey on hand. Finally, a few weeks ago, Ralph informed me they would be getting a honey whiskey in, I strongly suggested the American honey, they were thinking Jack Daniels honey. I went in last night and Ralph informed me they got the American honey Now, if they could get live music acts that make people want to dance, maybe some rockabilly or blues-rock acts, I also like bluegrass as well, a favorite group is the Fly Birds, they played at the Bright box a few weeks ago and were just awesome. They might also want to consider expanding the dining area to allow for the possibility of a dance floor area. Just my 2cents. Otherwise a great place to go read more

Came in for lunch with 2 other people. My Cuban was not hot and the cheese was not melted. I let the server know and I didn't want it remade. She asked if I wanted to talk to a manager and I said it didn't matter it was up to her. $17 for a cold mediocre sandwich is expensive. The Ruben was a miss. That's one that should be on Rye bread. The quesadilla was ok but not sure why the pico de gallo was on top and not in the quesadilla. Since my meal I didn't eat was taken off the bill I did make sure I tipped the server as if it wasn't. Not her fault about the food. They did remake it and put it in a to go box which defeated the purpose of a hot sandwich. I didn't eat it and it went in the trash. Manager never came over and that told me all I needed to know about this establishment. Prices are too high for a bar and grill that can't make a sandwich of all things correctly. This was our first and last time eating here. Response To Owner: It was a $17 sandwich that should have been hot and made correctly the first time. It's not rocket science. "Choked on a chicken bone and they could care less" My friends wanted to take me out for bingo and dinner. We arrived too late for bingo but Holly was an outstanding waitress! The appetizer of Philly Cheesesteak egg rolls was superb as was my chicken Alfredo? Or so I thought? While very delicious, I couldn't eat it all so took the rest home. I had a late-night snack and while eating, I choked on a chicken bone! Needless to say, I am not happy about that at all. Thankfully my friend helped me dislodge it as I was choking and could have been dead! No, I doubt I will NOT be coming back. We spent a lot there and tipped her very well only to almost choke to death eating leftovers. I use to work at restaurants and catering and in 30+ years of working, I never once did we have an issue with that kind of situation. This could have been a very serious problem and more careful food preparation could have been avoided. THEIR RESPONSE "Yikes, so sorry to hear about that, but glad you are ok, thanks to you friend. The nature of chicken (and fish) is that there are bones, and despite our best efforts, one can slip through, especially in the pulled chicken entrees. Great food and service. The live music was really really good. Not only are they LE friendly, but they also gave us a nice surprise after dinner when they found out that 3 of us all had a birthday within a week of each other. Definitely be going back. I ordered the nachos plate with pulled pork and it was HUGE! Very tasty and worth every penny. Came back again for a third time and I got the shrimp n grits. Last time I got it, it was really good. This time, not so much. I don't know if they ran out of the lobster cream sauce that it's supposed to be in it but this one was drowned in butter with no lobster cream sauce. My friend also got the shrimp and grits and said the same thing. I am not sure if they got a different cook within the past month but this version of the shrimp n grits was not good and made my stomach turn. read more

We have only been here once and it was okay. My husbands food was not correct twice and once he finally got the correct food he was Not impressed. I got the turkey sandwich and it was good. It was a basic turkey sandwich (not that, that is a bad thing) we had their egg rolls as a appetizer and they were very good. Our server was very nice as well as the manager Kate. I have met the owner several times at various other places and he is always wonderful. Just a all around good guy. This place was great! We stopped off on our way home from the OBX - saw their sign on I-81. We needed more than greasy fast food and this was perfect!! Family of 7 everyone found something they wanted on the menu. We were able to keep our vacation vibe going with the peel-and-eat shrimp appetizer, and then our individual appetites were satiated. The service was excellent! Food came out quickly and our waitress Katie kept our drinks filled. The managed stopped by to check on us too! Went here for beer and dinner. Sat at bar. Service was a little slow considering that I was 1 person and sitting at bar. Bartender made up for that by being good guy. Beer mugs came out of the freezer so the draft beer was nice and cold. Had a Hazy Like A Fox IPA and the Paladin burger. Ordered the burger medium well and came out correctly. Enjoyed burger. We were 2 couples, all 4 being boomers. We know good food and service when we experience it and we were there for Jimmy Buffet night. The good: a nice selection of items and prices were very reasonable on the specials menu. The margaritas were very good. The guys had burgers and they were excellent. The bad: the girls ordered the fish tacos and neither of us liked them. The fish were big chunks and generous, but we just weren't a fan of whatever the stuff was at the bottom of the shell. Some kind of chopped veg with a sour tasting sauce is the only way I can describe it. Others may like it, unfortunately we did not and we've both had fish tacos many times before. They gave us a tiny tin of sour cream and one of salsa, and chips. The salsa was not very tasty. I don't know what was in it but it was unlike any we've ever had and it was an extremely small serving. Certainly not enough for the tacos or the chips. I'm sure we could have asked for more if we had actually liked it. The really unfortunate thing was that our waitress forgot to put in our appetizer order for nachos. After a good amount of time our dinners came out and we looked at each other asking "didn't we order an appetizer?" Our waitress seemed like she'd rather be elsewhere if I'm honest. Everyone has an off day so we gave her a pass and at least from me she got her 20%, though perhaps not entirely deserved. read more

We've been to Paladin a few times and always enjoyed the experience. This past Sunday, we showed up at opening and I ordered a salad that had pulled chicken. The portions were huge and a few bites in, I got an ugly piece of gristle. OK, it happens. A few bites later, another piece of gristle. So now I'm getting a bit embarrassed at having to pull food out of my mouth while I'm chewing. Another bite or two in and this time, it's a piece of bone. And then another. The server came by and was appropriately concerned when I told her what happened. She offered me another salad or asked if there was anything else I wanted to order. The slaw was really tasty, different to what Im accustomed to, the added corn was a great addition. The sandwich was tasty but somewhat frugal on the oysters, a total of 4 very small oysters with a slice of tomato and lettuce with tartar sauce. The flavor of the oysters was great, but just not enough, 2 extra oysters would've made that sandwich the berries, the lettuce and tomatoes were the main event, if you're gonna run a special, hit it outta the ballpark!
