I am very sad to write this review. I have had an account here since 2009, since the doors opened here in redding. (I believe in the beginning they had a different name.) After almost 20 years of being a loyal customer, my account was shut down. I had no clue until I got a call to purchase a new membership. The lack of professionalism that i received, was dis heartening. Apparently a card on stay and save was not going through. I explained my purse had been stolen and i wanted to pay what i owed and continue. If i had noticed I would not have let that happen. They were persistent on a new account and that i could no longer have my old one, which i why i stayed so loyal... so i could have my loyalty perks. I am sad to say after all these years i will not be back. I would rather pay more somewhere else than to be treated like i was so disposable. While walking into another tanning salon, turns out I am not the only one. Unfortunately the customer care at palm beach has changed and in a small town client retention is very important. read more

Honestly I'm really sad to write this review. I've been going to palm beach for the last 10 years. They have awesome quality equipment and it's always really clean there. This review is more directed at the staffing. I always put my account on stay and save every year for the winter, I wanted to activate it and get a spray tan today. It took me 45 minutes just to convince the employees I JUST WANT A SPRAY TAN, I didn't want any of the 45 products they were trying to sell me. Different employees kept coming and interjecting their thoughts and opinions and showing more products while the man at the counter was already trying to help me and doing the same thing. I voiced many times that i don't want any products and this experience was very overwhelming. Many times actually. I finally got my spray tan, but by the end they were very short with me and didn't even show me how to use the spray tan machine, I have only ever done a spray once before many years ago before they had this new equipment. I'm not sure if somehow this store went commission based on selling products, but I was kinda sad because it used to be a friendly comfortable place and I never felt pressured to buy anything at all. Kinda a bummer and I'll be canceling my membership entirely at the end of the month and not returning. It's a sad goodbye. read more

I've been a tanning at Palm Beach for many years. I would say it's always clean - their tanning equipment is great quality. They are also very expensive ! In the past year , year 1/2 the customer service has declined and currently one manager has pretty poor customer service skills ! This individual works ( AM) and isn't a typical palm beach friendly person, she seems basically annoyed more often than not . She basically speaks to the other staff like slaves. She smiles but it's not sincere , gives super fake compliments . Most importantly she doesn't listen - she's more interested in selling products than anything! Even if you mention you are in a hurry and don't need anything she will try to sell you products. In addition she has set my bed wrong a few times and never apologized or even knowledge the error. She's borderline rude - a couple of days ago I listened as she treated a customer poorly - this individual purchased a package to spray and was returning to find out it was expired. Zero empathy & almost mocked this woman plus as she's training new staff. A couple of weeks ago I was coming in to spray tan and they were out of tan extender & the one that speeds up the process- the staff was incredibly apologetic and said they would credit my account so I wouldn't be charged. I returned two more times and they still didn't have the additives. I get it things happen. So this week I go in and the less than friendly manger is working ( around 8:30 am) she offers a scent additive so I agreed assuming the other ones would be free. When I explained to her I was told I wouldn't be charged for the additives because they'd been out she looked at me like I was lying. Proceeded to check my account and said "I don't know why they'd do that - oh they credited you $1 " And that's it literally- no apology- all while she was training someone ! Her attitude and a few others that have worked there in the past year are not close to the past employees! I cannot imagine working under this particular manager. I guess the owners should explain to her that there are other options in town regardless of how nice this salon is. It seems like all the friendly staff quits - could this manager be contributing? Who knows maybe but I'm tired of going somewhere to relax and do some self care only to be treated this way. If you don't care how you are treated then Palm beach could work for you ! read more

I have been a member for several years and like that I can put my membership on hold during the winter months when I don't tab. But today I was very upset. After 1 1/2 hours I walked out. i came here to buy a one month unlimited tan for a friend. This simple request seemed to confuse the teenage Barbie, she gave me such grief that I didn't want to buy a monthly membership. She couldn't give me a grand total of what it would cost , then I have two teenagers trying to figure out a total . Finally they tell me an amount that seemed fair , and I confirmed once again before I left ," so this amount covers one month tanning ? the girl said yes all she has to do is come in with her ID and she can start tanning. I was excited to give the gift card to the said friend who came in the next day to tan , and the teenagers told her sorry but no the gift card only covers five sessions or a few spray tans etc , my friend was embarrassed because she thought she was getting a one month , they told her if she paid 30 dollars more she could have an unlimited month. So she nervously paid it while the Barbie dolls laughed at her and made her feel completely belittled and uncomfortable. She didn't even want to do it so she paid and she left. I drove back today to just get a refund for both charges, mostly for the way we were both treated. I drove a mile away to another tanning salon who had all their prices on the board you can just pick from. There was no need to look at a iPad and scroll through choices and options . I asked her if it was possible to buy a one month unlimited Tanning for a friend and how much it would cost and in less than 30 seconds she said how much and I paid for it and not only that, but she was kind and I got so much more than what they were even offering at the tanning salon at Palm Beach. After activating my stay and save I found out they only have 1 spray booth . Typically have to wait an hour to spray and it's not an even spray tan at all. They got rid of the Versa which was way more even and customizable. Also, here on a Saturday they open at 10:00 and only 1 employee working and a line out the door. The new manager Jen is very rude and un experienced she threw away the stickers for tanning and blamed it on employees which we caught her in a lie. I've seen the way she treats her employees as well the girls up front are always upset. and just to think they were actually trying to get me a good lotion which is lie come to figure out it's all commission based" they make money off us by trying to sell us all these expensive lotions and other stuff would never recommend this place. I would have given two stars had the employee at the counter not been using profanities to her friend standing next to her talking. I went in on a whim - i had never been there before and thought i would see if it was as good as people say. I was taken back to my room, told to push the blue button when i was ready and it would turn on. The actual unit had no handle to the door that shut, the door that shut i literally had to DRAG across carpet, and the entire unit shook when i shut the door. I pressed the blue button and what do you know, the unit didn't turn on like the employee said it would. I stood there in the unit for a good 4 more minutes waiting for the timer to start and the bed powered up on its own. Overall, i didn't get any color, the salon felt dirty, unkept, and there was a bud light cup sitting on the shelf behind the counter - classy. Tropical Tan & Clothing has earned 1 star and I think I will continue my business with Sunkissed Tanning, which is much, much, much cleaner, the staff is much more professional and their equipment is well kept and actually works like its supposed to. read more

I've been going to this place for YEARS! Unless the old owner sold the place, I've met her a dozen of times. Place is always clean. On point. The only thing I can say that needs improvement is the customer services and the response the girls give in regards to the new hours. I'm currently needing to tan for health reasons only, for the vitamin D , and when I went in I purchased a monthly membership. I don't know why but I wasn't aware of any new store hours. The gals said the hours were posted but yet when I signed up , I didn't see them. I later discovered , after going in a few times, they keep the doors propped open , often , and in that regard you can't see the "new store hours" which are super inconvenient hours. Super infuriating when you pay for a membership and the hours to the establishment are cut short. I've asked the girls on three separate occasions when will the hours change etc. all they say is "soon" or "yeah we don't know , soon" I asked to speak to the manager, she says "yeah soon" Here I'm thinking , I'd love to support this local business, keep my membership, but I can never go due to the "new store hours" . I left a message for the "owner" to call me and I've yet to hear from them. I understand we're dealing with Covid, I'm a business owner myself in a similar industry and our hours are not restricted. The previous owner & her staff really were top of the line. That has since changed as has ownership. Once the transfer was complete, the new owner implemented new rules & the previous employees quickly left. They were replaced with a whole new feel & the salon has continued to change to a less welcoming, less attentive, less tidy salon. In addition, recently, one of the highest end beds was taken away & replaced with a newer, supposedly better bed. We were told our membership would cover the new bed as it was the same level. That proved to be untrue & my "top of the line" membership would have to reflect new pricing if I wanted to upgrade. I was already at the top level. After years of dissatisfaction & the most recent store manager's departure, I too decided it was time to part ways. I feel disappointed, frustrated, & honestly I don't feel representation about the new bed was honest. Sadly, after several years of membership, I've cancelled entirely. read more

This place is actually called Palm Beach Tan now, and the website is http://www.palmbeachtan.com. It's NOT Desert Sun Tanning Salon anymore. I have been to this place a few times, and I'm pretty pleased with the service and the tanning. I don't do the tanning beds--only the Mystic Tan (spray tan). The girl told me that Mystic Tan has a new system and tanning colors--she said that they improved the color and now there are also more levels to choose from. I went with the medium color, a level 2 I believe, and it was perfect. I think 3 would be way too dark. Only thing that I'm a bit iffy about is their pricing--30 bucks for just a one-time spray tan. I would expect it to be a bit cheaper, as it's Redding (back in my hometown of Napa I could get a one-time spray tan for $25). Not that big of difference, but still. You can also sign up for a membership which will save you a lot of money if you plan on spray tanning more than twice a month. That's probably the best option for a regular spray-tanner like myself! :) read more

I've left 7 messages with employees that said a manager would return my call and I have received zero calls back from her. When I ask to speak to her in person she is never there. This is the worst tanning salon!! They are way overpriced and try to keep charging people when they try to cancel... I know of 5 people who have recently cancelled with them. Their "stay and save" is complete B.S. they say it adds up towards tanning but they find a loophole to rip you off no matter what, and ultimately make you buy their Ridiculously overpriced tanning lotion which you can get online (or anywhere else) for way less!! The other tanning salons in town are way better priced without the horrible contract, and Palm Beach's unwillingness to work with customers to benefit anyone but themselves! read more

The employees are treated terribly, owners talk bad about their staff while out in public, management constantly being rude and being disrespectful towards employees in front of customers. Ran through here as we were traveling through town. The service was good, the place was clean. I got a mystic tan and was shocked to find out it was DOUBLE here of what I normally pay. Didn't love that, it would be really convenient if they would post their prices on their website. Watch your credit car billing with this outfit! Me and my wife have been members for almost two years, until last December between the two of us it was $160 a month taken out of the same credit card. Starting in December my wife dropped her membership two levels and I dropped mine one, still using the same credit card. I get a call from Palm Beach about 10 days ago saying that corporate had notified them that "I" had been using someone else's credit card since April to pay for my membership and did "I" have their permission to do so. I said I've been on the same credit card for two years as has my wife so if there's been a mistake made it's on Palm Beach's end. The lady from Palm Beach said they'd need copies of my credit card billing and as I only work 6 days a week at a fairly large business of my own I said sure I've got time to run errands for Palm Beach Tan. I pull my credit card invoices and see that they had charged me every month(for two accounts) until April at which time there was one regular charge and some other charges which I couldn't figure out from the amounts(which have been billed monthly as of this writing). I hadn't paid attention to the specifics on that card, I figured Palm Beach were suitable stewards for my credit card number...... apparently not, my mistake. I stop in weekend before last on my only day off paperwork in hand to talk to someone, no one there to talk to I was told to come by mon-fri before 5. I stopped in today(about 3:30) on an errand, paperwork again in hand and was told I'd missed the manager by minutes. I asked if we could get ahold of someone so that we could take care of this now as I too am very busy and don't have time to be rectifying negligent handling of credit cards by Palm Beach. I was told that they could take my number and call me back, I gave 2 different #'s and as of this writing I hadn't heard a peep. I asked the status of my account and they said they'd terminated it, I asked why and they said they have to have an credit card on file(I uselessly reminded them that they already have it and are charging it each month.... to no avail). Soooo when my wife gets back in town we'll both be looking for a new place to tan. I own a business that takes credit cards, we don't have memberships so I understand that those that do necessitate having a card on file to charge monthly..... all the more reason to be extremely careful with the handling of information. I've been in business almost 20 years handling thousands of transactions each year and have NEVER charged the wrong card and if we did I sure wouldn't blame the impossible on the victim, I would fix the problem ASAP. The girls working at this location are always new and undertrained. Coming in to tan always took twice as long as it should because the girl at the counter wouldn't know answers to your questions or how to help you. On May 11th, I asked the blonde girl at the counter to place me on Stay and Save since I wouldn't be tanning over the summer. I have moved to Oregon since summer ended and I found out last week, IN OCTOBER that I was never placed on Stay and Save and I had been charged for 5 months of tanning that I didn't use! This added up to over $150 that the salon is trying to credit to me in tan dollars that I will not use because I no longer live in Redding. When I asked for a refund of my money, the girl in customer service told me to "not get my hopes up on receiving a refund". I have been a loyal customer for over 4 years. This policy is ridiculous and out of date and I will never be tanning with Palm Beach again. read more

This place is absolutely the WORST place to tan! Zero customer service skills. Everyone that works there is self entitled and RUDE! Had a $45 gift certificate for spray tans, but since I'm allergic to the product they "so kindly" switched me over to ONE WEEK of their gold tanning. While they're running $20 ALL MONTH sun or spray. Will never tan here again. Going to Mexico so thought I would tan for a month before going. I haven't tanned here since 2012. I came in to buy a package and they told me I owe 45.00 for putting my tan on hold. They charged my account 5 per month to put a package on hold and since they couldn't keep debiting my account they put a surcharge of 45. What a raquet. Not a great way to keep business. I payed $50 for the VersaSpa spray tan (including upgrades) the day before graduation. The tan was aweful and splotchy so I went in the next day to request a refund. They claimed that they would mail me a check which never showed up. When I called to find out what was going on with the refund, I was told that the check was sent out and that the owner would call me back. The owner never called back and I called several more times over the next couple months and was told over and over by employees that the owner would return my call. I never recieved a call from the owner nor did I get my refund. I would never recommend this place to anyone. Palm Beach Tan is overpriced and poor quality all around. read more

I was a member here for a total of 3 months before cancelling my 'diamond membership' (most expensive membership here, which is around $100 per month). I was a regular customer, I would come in daily. The reason I canceled was because of cleanliness reasons, as well as how inappropriate employees/the owner acted. The employees are a group of kids who are just talking bad/laughing about the customers behind their backs (you can easily hear it in the waiting room). My boyfriend who was in the waiting room overheard them say about me, "I wonder if she has to lift up her rolls when she spray tans". Once when I was waiting for my favorite tanning bed to be ready, i watched the girl who was cleaning it, pick up a soiled towel off the floor (after a man left the bed), fold it back up, and place it on the bed (clean for the next person, who was me) and place the dirty used goggles which were on the floor on top as well. I tried to cancel my membership, told them why, and they told me they couldn't do it, and were going to charge me for the following month as well before i can cancel. I asked for the owner/manager's phone number, and they told me they didn't have it. I had to go to another location to get the owner's contact information. Also, my favorite tanning bed there, was never working properly either. Nobody ever refilled the mist thing that cools you down. If im paying extra for the BEST membership they have, i would hope to be at least treated nicely, have equipment that works properly, and be able to use a CLEAN towel and robe (not one picked up off the floor that some man just used). I should be able to trust the employees with my health and safety. You can catch incurable diseases from places like this. After discussing my problem with the owner, he seemed apawled and agreed to a refund for the month I was charged for that I never used, but he said i would have to wait a couple weeks for a check to come in the mail... That was 6 weeks ago. I tried calling him again yesterday about the refund and he said, "Do me a favor and dont call here anymore," when I simply called to check up on that. Was it really that hard "Bill"?. DO NOT TAN HERE, and if u do, get the cheapest memebership, wipe down your own bed before using it, do not use the towels and robes they provide, and expect for the employees to talk bad about you behind your back. thanks for reading my review, Ashley read more

If you're looking for something more than pretty girls and fancy equipment, specifically TO GET A TAN, then STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE! All they're good at is shaving - your wallet, that is... I signed up for the basic package to check things out in the middle of January. First of all, they don't pro-rate the monthly dues, so I paid $20 (19.95) for two weeks of tanning. Then they hit me with a $20 "membership fee" on top of that. THEN they added on tax to bring the total to $42.51. That's not even the correct amount and is about a dollar too much. Fortunately, when I signed up, I asked for copies of all the agreements to be run off while I did my first tanning session. The girl I signed up with gave me a blank stare when I asked for the copies upon exiting and had to wait for them to be run off. Good thing I got that paperwork, 'cause after trying the basic bed (which is so short you'd better be 5'6" or less since they use non-staggered bulbs) and noticing absolutely no tanning effect and they trying their bronzing bed (more powerful) on a second visit, which ALSO did absolutely NOTHING, I asked for a refund. You have to come in in person to do this, btw. Then the girl doing the refund says they'll discontinue FURTHER billings and that's it! I had to produce the original paperwork showing I was owed a refund. They cover this one pretty well too. $20 for one bronzing session and $10 for one weak bed session. Still, I am owed $12.51 back, even with THOSE insane rates. I had to prove it in writing before Meg would then pull out the refund form. Of course I couldn't get a copy of it and had to take a pic with my phone. All the time I've been writing this lengthy review I've been looking at all their clients leaving and all of them were white as ghosts. Big surprise... read more

I've been tanning in the Redding area for a long time. Like a traitor, when the new Desert Sun Tanning Salon chain popped up, I left my old place and went to check it out. The cute 20 year olds behind the counter were very sweet, energetic and eager to give me a tour of the beautiful new store. After seeing the brand new enormous glittering tanning beds, (with built in fans and ipod hook ups) and low swanky lighting, I was sold. I'd been hearing the Desert Sun commercials on the radio and they'd been boasting a $19.99 tanning special. The cute (very tan) girl who gave me the tour, explained the different tanning packages and told me that I absolutely HAD to go with the Gold Level Tanning package. She told me that the GOLD level beds were 15 times stronger with only a 12 minute max, rather than a conventional 2 minute bed. She also told me that less people were Gold level members and that I'd rarely if ever have to wait. Through all the smoke and mirrors, I agreed to bypass the $19.00 special and sign up for the $59.99 package. 15 minutes into filling out my paper work, I see in the fine print, that my bank card, will be automatically billed for the $59.99 on the first of the month. I tell the girl, that I only want to do one month. She tells me that to do this, it is far more expensive in addition to a "membership fee." I ask about the commitment, and she tells me that I can stop the auto billing at any point without being penalized. At this point, I am exhausted, defeated and a total sucker and I sign the form. The month passes and Desert Sun is jam packed. Almost every time I go in there, I am turned away because they are so busy and the wait time ranges from 20 minutes to an hour and a half. The beds work pretty good, but not better than anywhere else. The girls are rude and dismissive, having already earned their commission on my membership. (Yes, they work on commission. Hence, the $60 Gold package.) I finally decide that I've had enough and go to cancel my membership. I go in on the 29th and tell the girl up front that I would like to cancel my membership. She is extremely rude and angry and tells me that I will have to sign a form, and unfortunately, that it is too late to cancel my membership for the following month. I ask her what she is talking about and tell her that my card isn't charged until the 1st, and she tells me that the membership must be canceled by the 25th. I am three days too late. So basically, I am out of luck. Even though there is almost 5 days until the first, I may cancel but will still be charged the $60 for an entire month that I will not be tanning. I will NEVER go to any Desert Sun Tanning Salon again. EVERYTHING is overpriced. The young girls who work at the counter are pushy and rude, and the entire chain is sneaky and unethical. Support your local businesses and tanning salons. I sure wish I had. read more

Very clean and relaxing atmosphere. The ladies are always very nice and very helpful. They have Mystic and Versa spray tan, as well as several different level of tanning beds. The memberships are a little pricey in comparison to other salons in town; however, very reasonable for the quality of service and would recommend them over other tanning salons. On May 1st Palm Beach Tan charged my Bank card $104.95 for the Diamond plan which I chose. By paying for this particular plan that meant I could use their best tanning beds for the entire month of May. Yesterday I determined I would not be able to afford this Diamond plan for the month of June, so I asked the customer service rep at the counter to down grade my plan for the month of June to the Bronze plan. The rep did down grade my plan but then proceeded to tell me that would be "effective today" and I now must use a bronze plan tanning bed starting today. Of course she tells me this after she completed the transaction. I told the rep that I already paid for my month of May tanning under the Diamond plan so I should be able to use the Diamond tanning beds until May 31st, I only wanted to down grade my plan for the month of June. The rep told me that if I had come in on the 25th which was just the very next day, then I could have kept my Diamond plan status until the end of the month of May. I tried to explain to the rep that she just ripped me off because I already paid for the month of May tanning, I then asked the rep to please cancel the transaction and put me back to Diamond status because this was unfair, the rep said she was unable to do that and "if" a supervisor was there maybe they could help, but of course there was no supervisor there. So I was forced to use the bronze tanning bed, and when I was finished I canceled my membership. This is clearly a deceptive and unfair business practice from Palm Beach Tan, I paid for a monthly service upfront to use their Diamond Tanning beds and they did not honor that fact!! I simply wanted to change my plan status for the month of June, not May which I already paid for!! read more
