This seems to be the only way to get any response from this place. Last week I went for a spray tan they up sold me some pH balancing spray add-on, it was supposed to keep my expensive spray tan from looking orange. OK, I really don't expect it to be orange, but I'll bite. The tan looks orange, even after the add-on of that cream. Fast forward to this week I go back in, they informed me that they no longer have that product from a week ago, but they have a new product. I explained to them that I paid extra for something that was supposed to keep something from happening and I think it may have caused it. And they said yeah, we have something better now. This is a cream that you apply prior to your spray tan. First thing here is if you know your spray tan is going to turn people orange, maybe that issue needs to be addressed? But OK they said it's five dollars but you won't need the other one so it's really only three dollars if you want to do this one instead of the discontinued one. OK I thought maybe this one will actually work. Actually no my tan looks like a mess. It's very splotchy and literally the back of my hands look like dirt. The tan is streaky and I'm nervous about what it's gonna look like tomorrow. Also, I got a charge for $7.45, not three dollars. I have no idea what this is for and I can't get a hold of anybody to ask. Something similar happened last week with an excessive charge. So I'm heading over $100 a month for this membership, and being hit with these excess charges to prevent it from looking like a messy orange baked tan, which it now creates? Truly cannot even begin to explain how awful this place is. Every single staff member is INCREDIBLY stupid and unhelpful. None of them know anything and you can't ever get a clear answer on a single question. They purposefully confuse you so you end up spending more, they don't actually have the right information so what they do share ends up causing harm, they're always rude and demeaning during the process while they're explaining the incorrect info, and their prices are insanely high for lackluster services. Oh and you'll get an AI bullshit response from the "business owner" on every review even though the same issues are being brought up by multiple people and no changes are being made. Here's an idea, HIRE BETTER STAFF or teach the current staff how to do level 1 customer service. SAVE YOUR MONEY GO ANYWHERE ELSE. They were not able to refund my card saying their system couldn't do it. I've worked in credit card processing and I know they can refund it if they want. So it sounds like another admin scam to me. They gave me credit instead that's not for future months bill credit but instead extra time in the services. So it's very much a let down. I don't need that I need my charges reversed. read more

I have to say, California Sun Chico, your team is greatly improved in customer service, making your place a place I enjoy coming again. Thank you In the past, pre Covid times, I couldn't go in there without the sales team unforgivingly trying to sell me lotion I didn't want or pushing me into tanning in beds, quite frankly I would never go in. I know what I want, what I like, have been tanning for 20 plus years, and the last thing I want is to go to my relaxing spa like, tanning, multi bed/massage experience with some pushy sales lady ruining the vibe. You have fixed all the above issues I had for the 3 years prior and I even complimented one of your associates recently because she is so easy going and makes my experience so much more relaxing and enjoyable. I buy lotion whenever I run out, I'd rather have an honest opinion when that happens than a pushy sales deal beforehand. This has really improved your place. The Red light jiggle bed, new water massage bed and easy going staff definitely upgraded my spa experience, thanks! The other area I just found out that you have improved is your membership cancellation process! I don't mind paying the $5 fee per month for the "account freeze" option, especially now, as the $5 I was charged for those months to hold my place in my membership, and avoid paying the $30 annual fee charge again, now goes towards the account monthly membership charge when I start up tanning again. Great news! I also do spend several months away at a time with no certain regularity, and it makes a world of difference to be able to cancel permanently more easily than before. I didn't think I was going to love the spa services as much as I do!! I do all the services I can each day when I go in which is M-F most weeks I only skip if I have an out of town Dr appt. Like today :) I would give it 5 stars but the equipment is often under service or not working quite right. I had death In the family from covid and then I fell sick with covid and didn't make it in one time and over that couple of months they still charged me for those months. I explained to their corporate and they couldn't do anything. They could see I did not tan one time during the time I had to pay for. I finally had to cancel my membership. Came back to Chico for a friends wedding, I hadn't been in town for many years and wasn't sure how easy it would be to look up my profile and what not. The ladies up front were SO SWEET and amazingly helpful! They were able to pull up my old profile no problem and get me in to a spray tan nearly instantly - they were even able to recommend what I should do based on my previous tans I had done years ago. I was blown away by how wonderful the service was and how easy they were to deal with. Also my spray tan lasted for several days without turning blotchy. I have the Ambassador Membership and love it. It's nice to be able to do a quick, quality tan, or stay a couple of hours and 'spa' it up. Though I usually tan in Folsom, it was nice to take a tan while up in Chico without any charges. The staff is always sweet, fast, and know their products. 5 stars to the owners for creating this great tanning experience, and to the staff for running each shop professionally, regardless of which location you choose. read more

I realized after they closed I left my Michael Kors silver watch in my tanning room. I know that is where I left it because I still had my watch indent on my arm that night and it was the only time I took it off. I have left something in a room before (cheap costume jewelry) and the next time I came in they let me know it was there and gave it back. So I had complete confidence this would be the case this time. I was wrong, I'm assuming that this time whoever cleaned the room knew it was worth over $250 and decided to keep it. When I called the corporate office they said they can't do anything. I'm disgusted that a loyal customer was treated this way and I have canceled my membership and will not be returning. I know it is ultimately my responsibility for my items, I was in such a hurry I didn't double check that I had everything. I didn't get a call or email when they the monthly charge didn't go through on my card because I had gotten a new card & they added a fee for me not paying. No heads up or anything. The beds and rooms are great but the service and specials are not. Whenever I went in there I always felt like I was getting pressured to buy something or upgrade. If I wanted this I would ask about it. I was tanning here for awhile then stopped. While I was tanning everyone seemed friendly. After I stopped tanning I would still go in with friends and the workers there would suddenly be treating me like they had never seen me before. That's not how you get your customers to come back. They also make it a hassle to end your membership. The beds and rooms are great but I think there are much better places in Chico to go tanning than California sun. read more

I don't understand anyone that complains about this place unless there was some sort of billing mix up. Which happens sometimes, but that's life. I've been tanning here for years, and the girls are all very nice and polite and they even remember me and my cousin AND that we're cousins. Haha...hands down best deal on tanning in town especially if you spray. Sure sometimes their system goes down, but they always try their hardest to get it back up again as soon as possible and are extremely apologetic when it does happen on occasion. You're still getting a steal of a deal here even if their system goes down on occasion. I represent my work too when it comes to marketing and PR, and I'll be the first to say yelp is where the never content come to complain. Ya'll rock especially the managers! $22 a month for unlimited tanning is good & the salon always seems clean! I rarely ever have to wait because they have a ton of beds! The reason for three stars "A-OK" is because of what the staff is trained to do.. EVERY TIME I go in (about four times a week sometimes) I get the same exact speech "So it looks like you've been going in the basic beds for quit a while.." Just stop. I am not upgrading!! UVA rays are WORSE than UVB ! UVA rays are what damage the skin at a deeper level which is where cancer starts & it causes dramatic aging results. When I continue with my usual, "no thank you, I don't like the upgraded beds." There are a few employees (I won't name names) that just keep trying anyway! Very frustrating. Just stop. I never thought I would become a tanaholic. My wife had been tanning here for awhile so I decided to try it out for a few sessions before our summer vacation. Long story short, I go just about every day now. The staff is well trained and very friendly. The salon itself is very well done and they keep it very clean. I dont have alot of tanning experience but I think their equipment is top notch. I even tried the beds in front that look like something out of a sci-fi movie, way cool! I love California Sun! It's the only place to get a great tan in Chico. I have been tanning here for years. They have great membership deals! In the off season you can freeze your plan and go on "Stay and Save" which charges you $5 a month that is then credited to your account once you start your membership again. I restarted my membership earlier this week and Alana was so very helpful! She went above and beyond to help me understand my membership options and helped me choose the best one for me. Worst customer service ever. Called for a monthly pricing at corporate. Was given price and drove on my lunch break. Got there to be told i need to pay an additional $29 sign up fee, which was not disclosed on the phone. I left the facility and called corporate. The supervisor basically called me a liar, refused to transfer me to a supervisor above her and hung up on me. I would have paid the start up fee if i had been told last week. Feel like it was not disclosed to get me over . Found a closer salon that was honest about pricing and nicer. read more

Still horrible. Went in today just for a month of tanning before I fly to Maui. There were four young college girls (all employees) standing at the front counter talking about ordering breakfast. The person helping me kept trying to give one of the other girls her order while simultaneously talking to me which I thought was tacky and rude. Then they tell me it's an extra $29 to initiate " a temporary membership" so that I don't have to go through the tedious process of trying to cancel through they're awful corporate cancellation process. So basically, they're charging me the $30 monthly fee for tanning and another $30 as a "back up" second month cloaked as a start up fee so they still get 2 months worth of fees from you. They are scammy and shady! Also stop pushing your over priced lotion on everyone! So tacky!! read more

Being an former employee, coming here has been a bit up and down. For the longest time while there was a manager it was great! Clean from top to bottom, great service, everyone was knowledgeable about beds lotions etc. But than there was no manager, no shift lead. And it was BAD. So bad I was close to calling corporate to complain. Dirty rooms with dust bunnies that I swear we're alive,beds with lotion marks and handprints (that I would have to clean myself before using) horribly rude associates who would yell across the salon there personal gossip that was inappropriate for work, and then associates who knew nothing. I was at the end of my road with them. And than a new manager comes in, and I am beyond happy to be a customer there again. Went in today and didn't wait more than a minute to be helped and put in a bed. The girls were so knowledgable about lotions, and sales and deals. The room(3) I was in was spotless. The bed was clean from top to bottom and I was able to relax while I tanned and didn't hear anything but the hum of the bed, and the beep announcing a customer had entered! Staff is friendly and pleasant on site but having to call into their business office was horrible. I spent an hour on hold just to be told that I had 40 dollars in fees to cancel my membership. Then Alyssa had the worst customer service skills. I asked for her supervisor and I am still sitting on hold after waiting and hour+. I would love to give this business more than 3 stars because there are some really good things about it. The staff is friendly and pleasant, the place is spotless and it is a really great place to relax. Unfortunately, they have some questionable business practices that need to be addressed. Upon reading some of the other reviews here, I only then learned about the policies regarding cancellation. I thought there must be some mistake. When I went into tan the last time, I heard somebody else being signed up for new membership. They were told, exactly as I was told, that you can cancel anytime and be sure to cancel before the 20th of the month so that you don't get charged for the next month. They did not mention the fact that the cancellation request had to be in writing, at the main office in Roseville. I asked the girl who checked me in for clarification of their policy and again she stated you just have to get it in by the 20th. Then, I asked her so I just bring it to you and that's when she told me that it had to be either delivered by mail and received in Roseville by the 20th or driven there. So, I asked her if that means if I want to cancel on the 19th I have to drive to Roseville and present the office with my cancellation? And she said yes. Now, policy is policy, however, this is not the way that is presented to clients when they are signing up for the service. It has the appearance of trying to make it as difficult as possible to cancel a membership. This is an expensive service and it should not be so hard to cancel. Beyond that, if you have to deliver something to a different office you should be told that upfront. I am certain that they are collecting plenty of additional fees because clients are not given the correct information upfront. That is why I say that they have some questionable business practices. This used to be a very common practice for gym memberships which has since been made illegal, to the best of my knowledge. If the local staff are capable of signing up memberships, they should also be given the authority to stop memberships. That way clients are not held hostage for an additional payment of one month. Especially if they're not being made aware of all of the rules in the beginning. Aside from that, my only other issue is the fact that I have to stand waiting in the lobby for long periods of time most of the time. There can be several employees wandering around and it doesn't seem like the clients waiting at the desk are necessarily the top priority for every single staff member, which I think it should be. I am paying $70 a month for a membership, and I think that should come with certain perks, such as not having to wait between every single service for 5 to 10 minutes. Perhaps they could institute a VIP line for their higher level memberships? That might also encourage other people to pay for higher-priced memberships. it's just not worth it First off this is a nice looking salon, walked in later in the day a couple months ago and my first impressions were good until I learned the packages were awful, I was told to get a tan that I could actually see I would have to pay 40$ a month and send a LETTER to Sacramento to cancel scetchyyyyyy (not the 10$ or 15 advertised). I was sold an expensive lotion etc and continued to come in and get pushed into lotions and upgrades on beds. I've been tanning off and on for 10 years so I know the basic drill. Here's where it gets bad I talked to an employee (or a former employee) out of the store who told me they have to sell and push lotions, and if they don't get lucky they get no hours (also only 5% commission?!) and are not permitted to get another job. She also told me every single bed is overdue for bulbs changed. Shame on you CEO on the radio! You are abusing these sweet girls who work for you! After coming here I'm switching to tropical zone, the corny decor is NOT worth it at cal sun. I know they will have new bulbs at tropical and not shady business. read more

As someone who gave up tanning 2 years ago I am a regular for a good spray tan. The spray at Cal Sun is one of the best I have gotten. It's easy, even, non greasy/sticky, the smell is more than bearable (I almost like it) which is saying a lot because they are all usually gag worthy. The place is immaculately clean, never a wait, the girls are friendly, and it's Cheap! I got 3 sprays for $50. Normals $25 each. I have only one time had an issue with an uneven mark on my elbow, other than that its a great place for a spray tan from a booth. read more

Went in to get a spray tan & when I got out I noticed my cosmetic layer was really un even & my back was darker than the rest of my body. I brought it up to the manager and she told me that it was just the cosmetic layer and it should even put in 6-8 hours. Well 8 hours later, I literally have white stripes running down my sides like racing stripes & my back is way too dark compared to my front. I did everything I was told to, did all the poses to get even coverage & came out looking like crap. Had to get a airbrush tan to look normal for my friends wedding. read more

I love California Sun. Truth to be said it is the first tanning salon that I have ever walked into. And from that day, a few months ago, I have been going in at least one a week. It is very clean, the service is amazing. I love that the employees (only females) working here can remember my name. Though a new-bee to "artificial" tanning, I love it. I purchased the all access membership (somewhere at $70/month) which also allows you spray unlimited tanning which I have never tried, I love the beds and the fact that one one of their, I think it's "ultimate" bed, I can plug in my phone and listen to any of my Pandora stations. There is only one thing that seems to be an issue lately: it is the fact that they seem to be under-staffed. So, if you arrive when the after work crowd (I said crowd, yes, this place can get that busy) gets there you are bound for quite a wait 15-20 minutes even, depending also on the bed that you are waiting for. But overall, it's wonderful and under no circumstances I wouldn't recommend this place. read more

I just moved to Chico and needed a tanning salon, especially since Halloween is right around the corner. I chose California Sun after doing some research because they use similar beds and a similar spray tan machine that I was used to coming from a Palm Beach Tan. My first impression of the store was that it was very clean which is obviously important at a tanning salon and the gal that greeted me was nice. Unfortunately, I was not offered a tour or an explanation of what was even offered. I was suggested the lowest club membership and the gal was upfront alone and her attention was split. I looked at the sheet and chose the highest level because I like to use sunless in combination with uv tanning. I filled out the skin evalutaion and was asked to sign some consent and waiver forms. I was finally put into a bed and that was that. I didn't even really know what level bed I was in. The second time I came was a good experience. A different girl checked me in and had to clean the bed I wanted to use. I hope it hadn't been sitting too long becuase I know how porus the acrylic is. The third time was the worst. I went in needing a spray tan and a bed tan first. I come in and check in. I wasn't advised how the transition from bed to spray was, but apparently it is bed and then re-check in for spray. After my bed tan, I came back out and asked to do a spray tan and asked what levels of colors were available. I was looked at like I was crazy for even asking that question because there is a clear and a bronze option not levels. The tone of the conversation was condescending and rude. I had not spray tanned at this location before and was just trying to understand what type it was. I was then asked about a ph balancer that is $2 extra even with the highest level of membership. I asked if it mattered that I already had stuff on my skin. Both of the girls looked confused even though I had just gotten out of a bed. I said I used tanning lotion and started to say something about moistorizing with coconut oil, but I was cut off mid sentance and scolded that I signed a waiver saying I would not use oil in the beds by the girl that initially checked me in. She stomped over to clean the bed as if she was in some sort of imposition. I had mentioned on my second visit I had to wait for a bed to be cleaned. I do not think cleaning the beds right away is a priority. Anyways, I continued my sentence with the remaining girl and told her that I wouldn't do the ph but I've used all the products I have before and purchased them at an indoor tanning salon. At this point, I was just shocked at the interaction because I have never been treated so terribly at a customer service based facility. I was regretting my 6 month commitment at the highest level of membership too. I was shown to my spray room and asked if I knew the positions, which I did and was given a hair net and booties. The spray room didn't have wipes which I think is somewhat important in sunless tanning and it was a really small room. My spray tan was nice and it turned out great as usual. Overall, I feel that the level of knowlege and level of customer service is just appalling. I have only gone 3 times. The third was the worst. I truly hope that all of my experiences after this are much better especially since I am locked in for 6 months. First if all, the salon is absolutely gorgeous!! Very high class, and super clean. The staff is very knowledgeable, and makes a point of learning about your skin type and reason for tanning to personalize a package that best fits your needs. I just went on vacation to Tahoe, so the staff had me build up.my base tan so I wouldn't burn, and had me do a spray tan right before I left, which was AMAZING! Five stars for impressive facilities, incredible staff, and phenomenal results. Ps. They have 25 rooms so you never need to make an appointment, and they're open seven days a week!!
