We had a terrible experience here, I wanted to share what happened so it doesnt happen to someone else. My Mom was coming in for her first cleaning appt. She had just moved from another city so this was a new dentist for her. She is also close to age 90 with dementia. They recommended a deep cleaning however this was not covered by her insurance and at the time we did not want to pay out of pocket, we just wanted a regular cleaning. They said they would do it, however when she went in, they took her back into the room and did not clean her teeth, they took advantage of her and her medical condition. Because our dentist was no longer taking our insurance, I was in need of a new dentist. I started calling dental offices in our area to see who accepted our insurance. Several of the offices I called were curt with their answers - almost rude. I called Palm Dental Smiles and the phone was answered by the lovely welcoming voice of Dr. Negar. Let's face it. No one WANTS to go to the dentist. It's been a few years since I last saw mine and I felt like a needed a new one. I was referred to Palm Dental Smiles by my wife. I needed the works done- X-ray, cleaning, fillings. Booking an appointment was fast and easy. They called me back and moved me in sooner to accommodate my schedule. Patsy was kind and fast while she was doing my X-Rays. During my initial exam, Dr. Kohan was gentle, understanding, non-judgmental and very attentive to my questions and concerns. During the cleaning and filling portion of my appointment, she was cognizant of my pain and discomfort. Cleanings in the past with other dentists have been riddled with dread and anxiety but Dr. Kohan and her assistant made it quick, gentle and somewhat comforting. AVOID, AVOID, AVOID. Went to this place on a whim of whatever dental insurance. After an initial visit she told me I needed over 1200 dollars in fillings, extra periodontal cleanings as well. After doing one side of fillings and having issues and pain with one filling.. I decided to go get a second opinion learning that whatever other fillings she was planning to do are NOT needed. My bite is not the same after she has filled my teeth and I will NOT be going back. I felt comfortable with her however for someone who has never had any dental work 1200 dollars plus for fillings is a bit alarming all of which was not covered by insurance she claimed so I paid out of pocket...... now I have permanent pain on my right top tooth that she filled. The filling process she Also did not pay close enough attention to notice I was in pain for one of them and I was trying to tell her I could still feel it. This is still the tooth giving me issues since July now and her response is sometimes it's take a month. Lady it's been Months and I still have pain in that tooth. I first went to this dentist in 2015 and was told I had 8 cavities. 8!? I've only had 2 in my whole life and within 6 months I had 8? I was skeptical but proceeded to get them all filled. The next time I came in I was told that 3 of them were damaged and I would need to pay to get them fixed. Keep in mind I don't drink soda, eat candy, or have an unhealthy diet/ teeth maintenance routine. Not to mention my dad went here for a few years and every time he came in, his cavity fillings were "damaged" and needed to be replaced. So I decided to find a different dentist and after going to a new one, I found out I actually have no damaged fillings and my teeth are perfectly fine. So rude of someone to take advantage of people. DR. NEGAR MESSED UP MY TEETH!!! I went to Palm Dental Smiles 3 years ago and was recommended to get my teeth strengthened at the root because I grind my teeth at night. While she did a good in that aspect, she said teeth tend to shift in this procedure and she placed a thin film for me to bite down on. She said "grind, grind, grind" as a way of examining the contact points between my teeth. She then went ahead and shaved the right side of my teeth. Allowing her to do that was ONE OF MY BIGGEST REGRETS EVER!!! Suddenly, my bite felt crooked after that and she recommended shaving the left side of my teeth to "even it out". However, after doing so it still felt off. She kept saying shaving only takes off a tiny amount of tooth enamel, but that's completely false. The shaving tool whirs at a fast rate and A LOT of tooth enamel is shaved. My bite kept getting worse and worse as she repeated the shaving of both my left and right sides another 2x, until I realized in horror... MY LOWER FRONT TEETH WERE HITTING MY UPPER FRONT TEETH!!! There were gaps on the left and right side of my teeth!!! This made it extremely uncomfortable as my teeth were not even and settled like before. Then, she asked me to bite on that thin film again and said "grind, grind, grind" but what I kept telling her (and what she doesn't understand) is that if I grind my jaw far left and far right, it will lead to full contact points on the film. Grinding on the film in that way is misleading and different than biting down straight without moving the teeth around. The problem now is that when my teeth try to settle, they don't touch evenly all around like they used to, only the front teeth touch, which is a horrible and unsettling feeling. As a result, when more pressure is placed on my lower front teeth, it applies pressure to all my other teeth, even causing 2 of my side teeth to rotate and are now permanently crooked! I also now get sore gums and jaw muscles as a result of this constant shifting in my front lower teeth. Imagine if your front lower teeth lean inward because of the pressure and force pressed down from your upper teeth because that's the first and only point of contact. It's been a horrible 3 years, it's uncomfortable, it's distracting, and it occupies my mind quite a bit. Did I go to her to resolve the issue? Of course I did, but this is what happened. I returned about a year ago after she refused to shave my front lower teeth. She explained that over time my teeth would adjust. No Dr. Negar, they didn't and still haven't adjusted as there was too much shaving and the gaps on the left and right side of my teeth are too big. I would even sleep without my retainer in hopes that my teeth grinding at night would force my front lower teeth to lean inward so much that everything else would adjust. But it doesn't. When I returned to her office and asked her to fix it again, I was extremely upset and distraught because at that time it was becoming more painful as I was allowing my teeth to grind at night. Her response? She said SHE WOULD ONLY SHAVE MY LOWER FRONT TEETH IF ANOTHER DOCTOR RECOMMENDED IT. So, she sent me to a Dr. Kovak (I may be spelling it wrong) who examined my teeth. He said that since I have such "virgin teeth" (not sure what that even means) that it's best not to shave jt. He said that my bite will always shift since I grind so I just have to live with it. I kept telling him that my entire life I've never experienced uncomfortable gums and jaw muscle aches or shifting teeth (except when I got braces at age 16) until Dr. Negar shaved both sides of my teeth. Like her, he said to just live with it. Needless to say I didn't go back to tell Dr. Negar because the pandemic struck and honestly, what was the point trying to convince her again? She was just going to refuse me as she always did, especially after telling me she would only shave the front of my teeth if Dr. Kovak approved of it. I'm sure her other services are safe to do like teeth cleanings and what not, but please, under no circumstances... DO NOT LET HER SHAVE YOUR TEETH!!! You will regret it and live with an uneven bite and uncomfortable gum and jaw muscle aches like me. It's been a terrible experience. Since I have to live with uncomfortable teeth as a result of her butchering my teeth, she will have to live with my bad Yelp review. If she reaches out and offers to fix my teeth and it actually corrects the problem, then I will remove this post. I have an HMO and they designated me with this dentist. First, the dentist made me feel pretty bad that my HMO really covered nothing and that I should get a better one. My three kids had their cleaning done here. There were a couple times I questioned her billing practices as she wasn't very upfront with the charges and adding some unnecessary things. Some red flags went up. But it wasn't until she told me my 19yo daughter had 10 cavities. My daughter felt so awful her teeth had gotten bad. So, I was in shock. So, at that moment I said take care of the largest cavity and we will hold off on the others while I wait for open enrollment to get other insurance. I was also told that largest cavity may need a crown because it was a pretty significant one. When I finally got the new insurance I decided to go to Dr. Joseph Joseph who was recommended by a friend. All this time my daughter was fearful and anxious about her teeth until she finally saw Dr. Joseph. Anticipating bad news, my daughter warned him about how bad her teeth were. He was actually surprised because she had only one cavity and it didn't need a crown. So from 10 cavities according to Dr. Negar Kohandarvish from Palm Dental to having actually just had 1. I don't enjoy the dentist, but the crew here makes for a pretty nice and easy time. They're attentive and I feel like they're genuinely happy to be there and help me. Dr. K is compassionate, smart, and really sweet. She is thorough when reviewing pricing with you, recommends the cheapest but best (for your teeth) route, and I feel provides fair prices. The faciloty is a little older, but the tools they use are new. They have tvs for while you're getting work done, but with the tool sounds and hands in your face they're only a mild distraction. However, I imagine it's a huge benefit for kids. My reason for one less star is that when I went in to get some repair work done, they didn't numb me. 1. Because I would have been numb on both sides of my mouth. 2. They didn't say this, but it was end of day and I don't think the staff wanted to wait the 15-20 for it to kick in. My issue, I did feel bad pain on one side, and after stopping it to let her know, she still didn't numb. Even a topical to slightly help would have been beneficial. My main recommendation is just don't go end of day for a "little" repair, because it turned in to more than we both expected. read more

I waited to do this because I'm a person that feels bad, but then after going to my second wonderful appointment at another Camarillo dentist I realized o really needed to share my experience. It's my responsibility to share this experience. I went in for a cleaning with insurance and the person (I think not even a tech or hygienist) was doing xrays and it was so extreme and so many that I finally said no more! Ive been going to the dentist since I was 4 years old and kept it up in my adult years every 6 months. I actually love to go to the dentist! I was told over and over this amount of more than 10 X-rays were normal and acting like I was crazy and never been to a dentist. Then the dentist finally came in after waiting over an hour in the chair and told me I needed a Major intensive cleaning and had 3 cavities. I'm like ok that's crazy. The extra cleaning cost was $150 above my insurance without anyone checking anything and the 3 cavities $450 each. I felt so pressured and wanted my teeth cleaned after waiting now over an hour so I said ok to the cleaning. It was the WORST experience at an dentist in my 45 year!! If a dentist or dental hygienist had done this to me in my younger years then I understand the hesitation and stress to do to the dentist. They made me feel like was a dirty person. That didn't take care of my teeth and the whole process is disgusting to me. I then went to another local dental office about 2 months later and the dentist said no you do not have any cavities and the feeling you are having is clenching and we decided on a mouthpiece, which was no cheap. The hygienist was amazing like I've known and said there is no way you would ever need a crazy cleaning. Three days later after the mouthpiece arrived I had no pain!! Non since in six months. I went back for my 6 month cleaning and it was great again with another hygienist and my 5 year old daughter watched and she can't wait to go to the dentist. Let me start by saying that I think Dr. Kohan is a decent dentist and she is very personable. However, I don't like the way she runs her business. On several occasions she and her staff performed services, telling me they would be covered by my insurance, and then surprised me with a HUGE charge afterwards. She was constantly trying to upsell and squeeze more cash out of me, usually while I was sitting in the chair and didn't have time to think it over. I felt like I was being taken advantage of. I went back several times because I thought she was doing good work and was friendly, despite her used car salesman tactics. I became less convinced when she didn't put my cap on properly and ended up having to grind it down to fit; and now there is a big gap there that catches food. I gave her one more chance when I went back for a basic cleaning. I told her that the ONLY services I wanted had to be covered by my insurance. She looked offended and said she couldn't do it that day, even though I had an appointment, unless I paid for the SPECIAL cleaning. I didn't have time to reschedule, I had taken a day off work to get this done, so I paid the extra, again. What really pissed me off was when I found out, a year later, that the SPECIAL cleaning actually was covered by my insurance, and I shouldn't have had to pay for it at all. I chose this practice because it was in network with my HMO insurance. I was told by Dr. Kohandarvish's staff that my HMO dental plan through my employer was more of a "discount card" vs. an actual health insurance plan. Exact words. Her staff told me I had to pay $1,290 out of pocket, which I did. I expressed that I was hard pressed to come up with that amount of money, and I was again told by her staff that my plan was more of a "discount card." Something didn't feel right to me, so I contacted my insurance company today. My max out of pocket for a standard "generic" crown should have been $185, not $900. I was told by my insurance company that per the bill that I was given by the Palm Dental Care staff, Dr. Kohandarvish installed a name brand crown that wasn't covered by my insurance. This was NEVER discussed with me. I was not given any options. Furthermore, on my 2nd DOS I asked Dr. Kohan to please, as a courtesy, show me the six cavities, as they were never shown to me on the x-rays, or via an intraoral camera. She refused! She said she was, "Sorry if I didn't remember that I had already been shown." I had already paid for the services...so I let her finish her work without showing the cavities. Lastly, as if it could get any better, at the end of my visit I reminded Dr. Kohan that her staff never performed the basic cleaning on me that I had originally scheduled. She said, "Why? It doesn't do anything." I insisted because I was sure that it had to be covered by my plan and I've always had routine cleanings. She sighed and told her assistant to give me a polish, at which point I got the sloppiest, briefest polish of my teeth. No flossing. No scaling or removal of deposits on my teeth with handheld tools. Dr. Kohan, and her staff, did however, try 6-7 times to push me to schedule, and pay $400, for a deep pocket cleaning, even as I left the office. I have contacted this practice on today's date in the hopes that they will amicably resolve the bill I wrongfully paid due to being lied to and/or misinformed, $1,290 was a staggering amount of money to me, and I feel disheartened that I wasn't given the correct information by the staff at this office. Shame on me for not asking more questions, but shame on them for how I was treated. read more

Coming from a guy that looks forward to his semi annual dentist visit, this office is the absolute worst!!! I scheduled an appointment for a cleaning and an exam for the first time here because my dentist was out of the office and I wanted to get it done before my vacation; poor planning on my part. The dentist came in and spent 30 minutes telling me I need a "deep cleaning" and filling replacements. Mind you, my last appointment 6 months ago showed perfect oral health. Had a good experience at Palm Dental Smiles. I had 9 cavities filled and my front two teeth that were chipped fixed. They always seem to fit me in when I need. As for the procedures once I was worked on it was very easy. Staff is VERY friendly and you feel comfortable almost immediately. Only odd thing is that I was told thank you for my yelp post and was explained why wait times were long my last visits as if I had spoken poorly about the company previously...but this is my first post.
