The Palmetto Seafood Company is a very, very, good discovery near the 5 points neighborhood in Columbia, SC. We were pleasantly shocked a few weeks ago, when we finally decided to visit and give them a try. This business has been operating for a few years, but we never realized that their menu offers "to go" options. So we decided to try their fried catfish platter, and we truly enjoyed everything we ordered. Im glad we stopped in for a to go order. I had a delicious pick two with nice light breaded tilapia and shrimp, well seasoned and even better once i added hotsauce. Though it didnt need any tarter or hotsauce, its just something i love to shake on. There is plenty of seafood to choose from here even gator. I have been here twice and each time the food has been excellent. The seafood is fresh and is cooked when you order it. They put the perfect amount of seasoning on the fish and it tastes incredible. You get a lot of food for your money. Both times I've been here they have thrown at least 1 extra piece of fish into my order, without me asking, because one of the pieces was kind of small. Their words not mine. I would have been fine with the number I ordered so they definitely aim to please. They are conveniently located close to my job so I will be stopping in at least once a week to grab dinner on my way home. I have to say I stopped by earlier in the week and they weren't open, so I suggest calling to make sure they are open before you go there. read more

So after checking the reviews, I was excited to try out the place. After checking into my hotel, and asking about local places, I wasn't deterred because it wasn't mentioned, yet surprised. After sitting in traffic, I get to the place around 6:50 and there are no lights on. Well, it is Tuesday and no special sign saying why it is closed or that it closed early. Look, I always prefer small, family owned businesses. I came here due to all the good Yelp reviews. However, Yelp let me down today. Together we got combinations of a crab cake, shrimp, catfish, flounder, scallops, mozzarella sticks and fries. The pros - the fried fish was excellent, the prices are very reasonable. The cons - the crab cake was pathetic, not sure what it was made of and I suggest the owners look at the ingredients since I am sure it was right out of the frozen section, everything else was just okay. Not worthy of such high reviews My suggestion is to either do a real crab cake, which is not that hard to do or stop selling crab cakes. Stick to frying fish which was outstanding. The fish was a 5, everything besides the crab cake was a 3 and the crab cake was a -1! I would come here again for the fish only. read more

We wanted fresh seafood! Traveled from Kentucky to South Carolina. The internet ratings are deceptive. Spend 23 bucks for fried green beans basically because they tasted great! The soft shell crab was tiny, fried mushrooms disgusting! The fries were okay. Ocean perch was sooooo over cooked it had a rubber consistency and I mistook the crust as a possible bone(that's how hard fried the fish was)! So very disappointing! A local lady warned us the oil is old and she was correct. The selection of fresh seafood is great, priced reasonably and they will clean and fillet your selection which is why she patronizes the business. It's located in a questionable area so lock your car. If your looking for prepared seafood BEWARE!!! Sadly disappointed. Talk to the locals if you want a true review of business! read more

Diner Drive Inns and Dives wanted to shoot a show here but they kinda said no thanks. This is a simple place nothing fancy and they wouldn't have a lot of footage. The owner Lucius is a retired fireman and very friendly person he has given me free batter on a number of occasions to fry my catch. I like how you can get gator nuggets here, there's not enough places serving gator what gives. But anyways you can pick out fresh fish here or they will cook it for for you. If your headed towards Gervais St. from Forest a Acres it will be on your left or about five minutes from the Vista. Parking can be tricky but I personally think its worth the trip. read more

But the one thing I hate is that they must don't have a good ventilation system, because you cannot be in there for 5 minutes before your hair and clothes smell like fried grease. However, half of my order was cooked & the other half I had to wait for ( I was already there 35 Min). The owner said well I didn't take your order, so what do you want to do?? I was offended of her non-business like demeanor . Like I messed up my order & not her staff. I asked her to discount an item & you would have thought I asked for her right hand!!! Her customer service was unprofessional & she would not take the appropriate action for her staff error. And she even had the nerve to say "People wait 2 hrs for my food. Well Honey, maybe back in the day with the 1975 paint in your store, but definitely not now with that greasy, non-seasoning fish.
