This night we were here with my sister-in-law celebrating her belated 40th birthday and I was truly hoping for a night of redemption on their part, even though we presented a bit of a challenge with an 8-top table. They started out strong, taking drink orders and delivering them in a rapid pace. I had a sloe gin mojito (Haymans sloe gin, lime, mint, sugar, soda) that was well executed though slightly too easy/safe on the mint. The waiter then took our food order but didn't write it down and for some obscure reason didn't ask what we wanted to drink. I found it strange although since he collected our menus but left the wine- and drink-list we all assumed he'd return shortly asking about drinks/wine. This was however the moment when I got that gut-feeling of "this isn't going to end well". And I hate it when I'm right, at least on occasions such as these. The waiter did return quite swiftly after taking our order, but only to quickly ask what one of us had ordered for starter as he didn't remember it. Before I had a chance to say we still hadn't ordered our drinks for our food he was gone, and I tried getting his attention over the next ten minutes without any success (major flashback to the last time I was here). And true enough, the starters came for everyone and I immediately said "We didn't even get to order our drinks/wine for the food!". The waitress holding three plates almost panicked, stopped in mid-step and didn't know what to do or where to turn. Our waiter noticed something was immediately wrong and we pointed out the blatant error. He tried to redeem it as fast as possible, and arranged for drinks for everyone. To me he suggested a pinot noir (Le Village Savigny-les-Beaune 2012, actually only on the bottle but he arranged for a glass) that was well and truly delicious to my starter of thick flank ox tartar, soured cream, tarragon purée, horseradish, and pickled red onion. While my starter was excellent, several other gave mixed reviews. Plate of charcuteries was bland, the smoked Baltic herring tasted nothing of smoke along with the grilled potato-bread underneath was burnt (and we're talking truly black burnt!). Going to the main courses this time around the waiter arranged for the drinks/wine before the dishes were presented. I was hoping on sampling a wine from Patagonia but it was unfortunately sold out. Instead he arranged for a glass of 2011 Médoc (Chãteau Patache d'Aux) that was a delicate experience to my main of reindeer filet, roasted garlic puree, ox-tail jus, smoked marrow, and fall vegetables. Truly spectacular dish! But yet again, a few in our company gave mixed reviews. A beef tenderloin that came with a stringy sinew(!), and my wife's rib-eye had both sinews, tangy fat on the outskirts as well as the temperature way off. Ordered medium, came more towards medium well borderlining on well done at places. Also, they came in with fries despite no one had ordered them, and they brought in too little of the potato gratin in relation to the people that had ordered it. For my dessert I had pickled lingonberry with yoghurt, roasted flaxseed, caramel curd and ice-cream. In the glass a small amount of 23 YO Ron Zacapa rum. All in all tasty, but the dessert was perhaps a bit one-dimensional and too sour without anything sweet enough to counter the tartness. All in all, two dinners in, I'm left with a bit of a conundrum. My ratings always reflect how well the particular establishment fulfill my expectations. I have higher standards for a place like this than the burger joint on the corner, while both of them still have the same chance of recieving a high grade if they exceed my expectations or literary blow my mind. The problem with Tages is that they don't measure up to what is expected of them. They lack finesse and detail in service, not attentive to what the customer wants and needs, but first and foremost they make too many mistakes with their food! Maybe it's a problem of too many tables and too many dishes on the menu? I don't know, but I'm unable to overlook the many cracks in the stylish facade. They didn't bring their A-game, and I'm truly doubting I will return as a customer as I've previously had much better food/experience/service for the same price tag. In my view, the price isn't worth the experience, and that's not a recipe for a restaurant's longevity.

If they succeed time will tell, but what I can tell you is that their most recent restaurant in the heart of Piteå doesn't disappoint. Walking in there's no doubt that you're in a BB-joint. The cold stone floor, tiled counters, and quite obscure patch work on the walls ranging from tiles, to untreated plywood and more. It's just really cool and hip. Almost a bit hipster to be honest. This particular location is more open than perhaps their first restaurant in Luleå, and I really like what they've done with the place. The menu and the burgers are the same, though this time I went for a Texas which is one of the burgers I have yet to sample but wanted to for some time. Texas, apart from the traditional fluffy and delicious bread and the juicy burger cooked to perfection, has wood-smoked bacon, red onion, crispy green lettuce, two slices of gorgeous cheddar cheese, fiery bbq-sauce and chipotle dressing. This burger paired with the ever so tasty sweet potato fries and an aioli dip is all you need to fall head first into burger heaven. I may sound over the moon in my description here, but the burgers and sides are really that good and I don't mind paying more money for local ingredients cooked absolutely perfect. And truthfully? My previous burger favorite New York now has to share the #1 spot with Texas. Next time, I'm heading for L.A.!

Time for an update..! But, to put it mildly, it's not going to be in their favor…read more So the kids chose where they wanted to go for dinner after an entire day at the harbor festival in Luleå. Mine and Erika's fear was of course met; O'Learys. I'm so terribly fed up with it, but the things us parents do for our kids, right? I don't mind giving a place a second (or third) chance, but this was by far the worst time ever. I ordered Joe Thornton's Striploin Steak that comes with garlic fried mushrooms, cajun butter, vegetables (carrots and haricos verts) and a choice of potatoes. Chose potato gratin and asked for my meat to be cooked rare. The moment my plate was served I only had to look at it to see it wasn't cooked properly, it looked more towards medium well. To make the initial matter worse is that the waiter said: - Striploin, well done - Ehrm, no, I ordered mine rare... - Oh sorry, I meant rare... - Well, wait just a second... And I took the steak knife, cut into the meat and said: - Look, this is almost well-done. I want a new one - Of course, we'll fix it So he wandered off with my plate while my daughter fortunately enjoyed her bbq-glazed spare ribs, our youngest son his portion of fries, and my wife her rib-eye (that she ordered medium but came more closely towards medium rare). I then got my new striploin and once again it seemed a bit off, but now against the other end of the spectrum. Bleak in color, almost no crispy char and the side cap of fat wasn't crispy or rendered down. When I cut into it it was more towards bleu instead of rare. Didn't finish the whole steak, barely even half of it. The vegetables tasted of nothing, almost cold (I suspect they didn't change them in between my pieces of meat (something you simply just do, end of discussion). The only positive note was the potato gratin, it was well-seasoned and creamy, but no potato in the world can salvage an otherwise catastrophic plate where the steak is supposed to be the hero. The only thing I'm left with is a queasy stomach and I may well be on the way towards food-poisoning, at least that's what it feels like. Undoubtedly the worst restaurant dinner experience in a long time.

Situated in an 1890's villa previously used as the Doctor's Residence (hence the name…read more"Doktorsvillan") for the old mental hospital next door (today a hotel and business park), that closed down several decades ago. This old and famous house has since then been refurbished into a cozy, familiar and pleasing restaurant environment that tends not only to the sense of smell and taste, but to the very core of a relaxing and rejuvenating experience. I've eaten here on a couple of occasions, and always left both satisfied and smiling. Most recently, it was their now locally famous Christmas spread before the holidays and it just never dissapoints. Immediately walking in the history and relaxing atmosphere just gets to you, from old woodwork to paintings to the decor. Whatever stress you had walking in is immediately washed away by locally produced appetizers on a table in the foyer next to a sparkling wood-burning fire. The whole place brings a feeling of a time long since passed when people weren't rushing through their days and lives, but actually stopped and lived in the present. The dining area is nowhere near what is considered normal for a modern restaurant. Instead, there are tables of various sizes (and can be accomodated/changed to fit pretty much any need) in different rooms such as the doctor's personal study, the dining room, the wine cellar, the outdoor garden gazebo and so on. On the table the porcelain, silverware and glasses are all according to the time period of the previous turn of the century, hinting at the classical ingredients, dishes, and wines to come. The Christmas spread served in a larger room only lit by burning candles is an extravaganza in food where one may enjoy a lot of interesting dishes such as smoked reindeer heart with lingonberry chutney, truffel pate, cold smoked salmon with herb sauce, a wide variety of pickled herring, different sausages and salamis, leg of mutton and so much more that is borderlines on sensory overload. An entire table is dedicated to desserts where the most amazing thing is that they are very small (almost tiny), which allows one to taste many of them and thus outsourcing your personal favorites to go back to for on another round. Going away from the Christmas spread (for me, a holiday isn't complete without a visit here every December), I've had a la carte dishes here such as lingonberry soup with vanilla parfait, coffee with home made almond/cardamom sweets, seared trout with bucktorn hollandaise and roe, and grilled reindeer from Jokkmokk with cranberry sauce, shii-take mushrooms, lingonberries with punch, stewed palt (googe it, local dish for Piteå) and smoked pork. Every dish has been nothing short of amazing. This place is more than a meal, it's an experience for all your senses and an evening away from everyday and everything ordinary and well deserved of a visit. To me, Doktorsvillan may well have all the ingredients for a star in guide Michelin.

The food are tapas style portions. Very small, so each adult at our table had on average about 3 dishes each (Please see pic I posted of the filet of meat and my hand next to it so you can see the size). The fave of the night was the Paella, the shrimp Caesar salad and dirty fries. The desserts were really good, rich flavors like salted caramel, crepe brûlée. The food was ok, some good and some just average...I would say you don't come here for the food. The restaurant is a really fun concept and I would go again for the novelty factor.

Living in the small-town that we do, the dining scene is in most regards not what would qualify as "substantial" but instead more along the lines of "adequate on occasion". The franchise and gastro-pub Bishops Arms opened here fairly recent, so we decided to slip in for a bite to eat and get a feel for the place. I've eaten at Bishops Arms in other cities before, and while they haven't wowed me with their food on previous occasions, their assortment of whiskey have always been substantial and well above par. Interestingly enough, they had just switched the menu this very day so everything was brand new. It had some quite interesting dishes like starters such as seared scallops with cauliflower purée, side of pork, and burnt butter. Or why not brisket with mushroom stew, and mustard crème on toast. Being a bit pressed for time we opted for only a main course and I had duck breast with fried potato chips, gooseberry chutney, and cauliflower purée. My wife had their chuck-roll burger with dressing, onion marmalade, coleslaw, and French fries. My duck was nicely cooked, pink in the middle with the fatty side nicely scored and rendered down. However, it wasn't an entire duck breast on the plate but two larger pieces of one breast - a cheap and bad move. The cauliflower purée had nice flavor as well as texture. Gooseberry chutney was a nice and flavorsome combination both for the duck as well as the potato chips. The chips however were seriously over-seasoned with salt and cold as ice. That dish would have been so much better with hot potato chips straight from the fryer. I also seriously lacked some sort of vegetables on the plate that goes well with a bit of duck. My wife's burger was also nicely cooked, a bit pink in the middle and juicy. Buns lightly charred/toasted and still warm, and in particular the onion marmalade was a perfect compliment. Fries nicely done (and hot) and not dripping with oil, but the amount of dressing was a bit off-putting the way it had been spread out over the plate. One thing that also was a bit off-putting not related to the food was the fact that the staff working there was standing behind the bar, giggling over their smart-phones, as well as the chefs that came out of the kitchen standing their in the bar too, instead of tending to customers and being professional about the people coming in there to spend their money. It is a quite unprofessional way to act in a restaurant. In all it's a gastro-pub part of a franchise, and the food is acceptable. But is it worth it? No, particularly for the reasons/problems mentioned above. Had I gotten a whole breast, warm potato chips and vegetables on my dish I'd have definitely been more inclined towards coming back and try another dish. As of now, I'd rather give it a pass and go somewhere else.
