I came to Montauk, NY for a formal wedding. Originally thought just to have a wash and blow-dry, maybe putting my medium length hair up. Pam told me to leave it to her and I did. She did the most gorgeous updo I have ever seen. I would post a picture here if I could. Am dinging one star only because I did not know in advance that they do not take credit cards. It is not apparent on the website and I was not told about this when I called to make the appointment. They take checks, but I didn't bring my checkbook, thinking I wouldn't need/couldn't use it out of my home state. Fortunately I had enough cash on me. older woman answering phone on the days they ACTUALLY open never confirmed my appointment and gave it away to someone else. I called twice to confirm the appointment without a response. the day of the appointment she calls me to tell me it was my fault and that they are a very busy salon . they should not be in business and if it weren't for the fact that there are maybe two salons on Montauk they would've been out of business by now. we were out in Montauk celebrating my daughters sweet 16 and ended up having to do her hair and makeup ourselves! book your appointments and drive to another town even if it takes you half an hour! do not give this salon your business or your money! absolutely awful person! read more

I've been putting off this review because I feel bad about writing it. The women of Pamela's salon are friendly and engaging. My friend, who had her hair done by Pamela herself, looked great and was happy with her blowout. I asked for some loose waves distributed throughout my hair. I showed my stylist a photo of a previous look that I wanted to replicate. I should have been more concerned when she wasn't particularly interested in viewing the photo. I should have been even more concerned when she turned my chair such that I couldn't see my reflection in the mirror. I should have left right then and there when I started to smell the burning hair. I left with crunchy Shirley Temple ringlets EVERYWHERE. I was able to loosen them a bit (ended up looking... messy) before the wedding I was attending, so all-in-all I wasn't too concerned (minus the $80 I spent...). However, my hair now smells burnt anytime it's wet. It's really really disgusting and concerning. I've been growing out my damaged peroxide blonde hair for the past year and it was finally feeling healthy again. REALLY regret ruining that with one $80 trip to a salon. read more

Bottom Line: It was a very stressful and upsetting experience when it's supposed to be a relaxing experience to get your hair done. These people are tacky and rude, and their hair dye product burns the scalp a lot. I was away on vacation in Montauk and needed my roots done badly. Normally I go to the same salon and colorist here at home, but I didn't have time before I left for my vacay. It really started to bother me so when I passed a salon while driving through town, I contemplated going to someone else.. I thought what could be the harm in having one inch of my hair's roots touched up just to cover a few greys and blend into the rest of my hair? Couldn't be that hard to pull off so I decided to bite the bullet and get an appointment here. To begin the woman who walked me over was okay, not overly friendly or explanatory.. When I began to explain that all I wanted was a root touch up she pulled out a chart and we agreed on a color that to my eye seemed like it would match. The timer went off and because she kept taking walk ins, I sat there for over an hour with my scalp burning from the dye. I mentioned it and was told it's okay if it burned.. It's okay that the timer went off a while ago. Needless to say, In the end, I had a freakishly brassy, yellow obvious 1-inch stripe along my root line. I don't know the exact cause, but I didn't freak out or anything.. I asked them to please cover it with a brown dye. They acted so insulted even though I had asked so nicely and quietly so the other clients would not know I was unhappy. All three employees became loud and began to passive-aggressively insist that I looked great and whatnot. After I said please just change it, I'm very unhappy. It's very noticeable to me, she was annoyed, but agreed to fix it. The colorist and owner went in the back and as I sat there I couldn't have been more uncomfortable. They were loudly talking about me and saying this was my fault, that she was just giving me what I wanted by doing that color, I agreed on that color, I asked for this... and now I have some nerve asking them to change it. I'm ridiculous. EVERYONE in the salon could hear them talking about me to makes matters worse. They had to have known we could hear. It was so tacky. I work in customer service and this was beyond inexcusable. When the colorist and owner came out and the colorist roughly and sloppily put the darker dye on my head getting it all over my face, arm and the chair. Once again it stung so bad, but I dare not mention it to these people. The timer couldn't have gone off soon enough and when it did I got up to go over to the sink with the shampoo woman. As I got up the owner loudly exclaimed "Oh my God, she got hair dye all ova my chair!!" like it was my fault the colorist was putting it on all sloppy. It got on my skin on my face and arms and I didn't say boo. Then as the shampoo person was washing it out, the owner instructed her not to spend time shampooing me because she already had given me a shampoo. Even though my scalp was still burning when I sat up from the chair I didn't want to say anything in fear I would be yelled at and berated again. With my hair sopping wet I paid and tipped everyone out because they did spend time and in the end it was back to being brown and I didn't expect anything for free. I am writing this because I was APPALLED by the rude, classless, tacky people that own and work there. The mistake wasn't the problem, those things can happen and I knew I was taking risk by going to a new place. It was the way I was treated afterwards, I felt like I had been bullied at school or something. I was nervous about going someplace that I had never been- I have had 3 people cut my hair in the last 25 years- but I was in Montauk and desperate for a trim and some layers. Possibly the worst hair cut that I have every gotten. I gave very specific directions. trim the dead ends and redo the long layers and side swept bangs that had grown out. She did not listen. I am not a hairdresser, but I have had lon layers and I knew that she was doing them wrong. She randomly started cutting sections off the top layers of my hair. When I questioned the method, she ignored me. She also had random off topic conversations with people who walked into the salon and she kept stopping the haircut to tell me things unrelated to the haircut; this was far different from the banter you normally have when getting a haircut. After an hour and a half in the salon, which I thought would be 45 minutes top I just gave up and had her blow out what she had done. Needless to say, I look awful, like a brunette q-tip. I am disappointed, because I decided on this salon because of the positive reviews that I saw on YELP. YELP, you really steered me wrong!!! It is possible that Pamela is good at her job. However, Joanne is not. I have never been more disappointed and the hair has been cut so short on top, that I dont know if there is anything that can be done to fix it right now! I needed help with my hair for a wedding I was attending and made a last minute appointment a few days beforehand. My stylist was friendly, talented and professional and got my short hair into a fun fauxhawk in record time! Fyi they do not accept credit cards-cash only-so come prepared! I didn't realize this until it was time to pay and had to get to the wedding but the ladies didn't even flinch when in a panic I admitted I didn't have any cash for a tip. So. Embarrassing. I had my hair done for my wedding here and could not have been happier, Not only are they the sweetest and filled with positive energy they also do great hair. They opened their doors to myself and 12 other women (ages 25-65) and were able to do everyone's hair perfectly. From blow outs to extensions, they did it all and did it very well! the experience was not good at this salon the girls had to redo their hear. The store was not upfront on the pay method either, so they had to run for cash . They said 50 for a blow dry but then then they charged no 50 and up .you don't pay that much even in NYC . I guess maybe because is seasonal they over charge in the summer . read more

Came in today with my 4 year old. Wanted him to have a tidy up. First, they were 25 minutes late of our appointment time, (with a 4&5 year old with me not so good) with no apology whatsoever and when it was time the lady (Joanne) was rude and nasty. I was explaining to her how I wanted it to be cut and when I noticed it was a bit too short for my liking, I mentioned to her to please leave a bit more length on than that. Politely, nicely, and without raising my voice. I WAS a customer and I should be able to tell them how I want the cut for god's sake!! She then replied "you can leave if you want, go and sit down and let me do this"! When she finished she scolded me further by saying "ok get up and have a look to see if it's OK with you" in a condescending tone. I've never been so humiliated in my life, and in front other patrons. One other hairdresser said to her client "oh she's spicy" and then they both laughed. What kind of a business is this? Shockingly unprofessional. So, I might not be a "local", (I heard rumors about how rude they can be to "non-locals") but I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt, because I don't work on rumors. And I am all about supporting small business. This was just a huge disappointment, and just to confirm, I was polite, didn't push, tell or anything. And I freaking apologized when she was rude to ME!! Ugh. Her outburst was unjustified- and unwarranted. She needs to act professional in a professional business otherwise she will run her employers business into the ground. Not worth the price and definitely not worth your patronage. So almost two weeks later and my head is still throbbing in pain from what is no doubt the worst haircut and blowout I have ever received in my entire life!!! The salon is rundown, very unprofessional, they talk about fellow clients in front of others but the worst part was they don't even invest in decent materials and hairbrushes and the pain I had to endure is unspeakable . I would have my five-year-old give me a haircut and blowout before I go back to this place - NEVER!!!!! And in the events that they are reading this please do yourself a favor teach your shampoo girl this please do yourself a fever teacher shampoo girl how to properly shampoo someone's hair without a cascade of water going all over their face and clothes. And please please please invest in some good brushes that don't rip peoples hair out of their scalp - I am literally one step away from needing a wig by the amount of hair that I lost thanks to their cheap brushes.
