Bumping up my rating for Great Plains Veterinary Clinic & Hospital…read more First, I have worked with them on a few occasions this year with my sister-in-law's fosters. Second, they were at my rescue when I found out kind of last minute that my dog needed a Leptospirosis Vaccine as required by a boarding outfit in Hot Springs, Arkansas for our vacation trip. My vet (Dal Paso Animal Clinic) also here in Hobbs, New Mexico, doesn't include the Lepto or offer it separately. Hobbs Animal Clinic would not pick up the phone when I called. And the only other place I called before Great Plains was Double J. Their price was I think $80 for the vaccine and $27 for a required examination - or maybe I have it backwards, but I think I have it right. PLUS, Double J didn't have an appointment available for my dog for another week - that would have been WHILE we were in Arkansas. Great Plains answered right away. They did need me to make an appointment, but it was the same day - just later that afternoon plus they did not charge for an exam. My dog's shot was $42 and so worth it because she was a great traveler. All of the ladies who work here are so nice and understanding. I finally saw Dr. Kuitu for a split second. He has seemingly only aged a little since I last saw him 20 years ago.

It's primarily a feed store for livestock and pets. There wasn't anyone around on 3/4/2024 when I walked in the feed sack area which is fairly substantial. No pricing on anything that I noticed. But they had baby chicks in! Also, they had green onions for planting that looked pretty good. I highly suggest you checkout the community board that's hung outside of the "main entrance." They have phone numbers and other info posted for things like border collie puppies, bales of hay, and horse shoe services for sale. Their hours are Monday-Friday 8:00-5:30PM with a lunch break from 12-1. Saturday 8:00AM-noon. Closed on Sunday. Check them out just south of Hobbs on the Eunice Highway.

Acosta's Aquariums has been a long-standing small business in the community…read more I'm an 80s baby & remember coming here often all the way through high school to pick out new friends for my aquariums. I always had a stronger nexus with non-human beings after visiting here even though I never wanted hardly any of them as pets. I brought my young daughters with me on August 23, 2023. This place hasn't really changed one bit. Their fish are mostly healthy looking at affordable prices. They sell freshwater and saltwater fish and other creatures. They still have a room dedicated to birds - namely parakeets, cockatiels, and finches. Another separate room for reptiles, arthropods & arachnid species also still exists. At the front entrance their "furball" critters take precedence... rabbits, hamsters, ferrets, and hedgehogs. I loved their baby tortoises - so darn cute! They seem to sell out quickly of axolotls and ferrets and a few other more rare animals. All of the supplies you would need are sold here too. I know several folks who come here for mice for their snakes and crickets for their frogs and bearded dragons. The owners are super friendly & ready to assist you. I'm hoping my daughters will continue to do well in school and such so they may earn the privilege of taking one of these critters home one day... The only thing I would change about this place is the outside is quite demure and boring. It doesn't match what's on the inside at all or the personalities of the owners. I remember when the Lea County Humane Society north of town on Alabama Street. This is essentially what it transformed into. This large facility was very clean on August 24, 2024, when I popped in to see what was needed for a dog license. Turns out my new canine did not need a separate license since I recently had gotten her chipped and registered at our Hobbs address. Thanks to the friendly young female employee who explained all that to me because my vet office failed to mention that! Their kitten/cat adoption area was cute with fun climbing "trees" through glass partitions. When my daughters & I walked through the dog center--just out of curiosity-we saw so many beautiful dogs. Some were much louder than others. Their area was clean also. The shelter often needs volunteers to walk dogs at adoption events & at the nearby Humble Park. Their coordinator, Evelyn, does great work with social media for all of these events and more. Also, I really encourage them to continuously push how to report animals that look lost, etc. and how they accept intakes. It seems so simple, but they really need to publicize that.
