This place only take order for take out. I came here with my baby and didn't realize I'll be carrying 2 bags plus my baby so I was kinda having a hard time managing how am I gonna carry all of it. Delicious, one of my favorite local diner spots, their dinner combos are great cost. Unfortunately they don't have eat-in or the buffet anymore and are strictly take-out. Service is fast and calling in an order is the best way to get food fast. Small waiting area inside with some chairs and the owner is nice too. Right now it's closed on the inside and only offers take out and delivery. I had this and China palace back to back and I will just say that the quality of the food here definitely stood out as being better. We ordered some dishes of the regular menu and Chinese menu and the Chinese menu dishes were even better. We tried the spicy chicken and Singapore rice noodles, both were a bit spicy. The rice noodles had a little yellow curry powder and were delicious. The spicy chicken was yummy and had jalapeño slices in it. Their twin rolls, one half with a shrimp and one half with cream cheese, are unique and delicious. The sesame balls are also great and kept getting crispier as time went on, which I appreciated. We also got some hot braised chicken- that's like their sweet n sour chicken with a different sauce- more like general tso sauce, plus veggies. On this day it was soggy and unappealing. The crab Rangoon were just okay. A little oily and in the Togo container with food so they got wet on the bottom. Hot and sour soup was very hot and kind of bland on this day. Sometimes it's better than others. Spring rolls/egg rolls were crispy and delicious with fresh veggies and not too soggy on the inside. We also tried the honey chicken which was a little similar to some place's Hawaiian chicken but had no pineapple. I didn't think this one tasted as fresh as I was hoping though it wasn't bad. I would definitely order more from the Chinese menu next time to explore it further since those really stood out as better to us. read more

Very good food and service, but we were surprised when we arrived to learn it is now carry out only.

TLDR: Takeout only. Bland. Bare bones recipes. Go to Great Wall on Baltimore instead. MENU: It's your typical beef/pork/chicken/shrimp with (insert vegetable here) in a cornstarch sauce type of Americanized Chinese food. If you want, you can get the dinner special during lunch hours - the difference is it comes with your choice of egg rolls or crab rangoon. All of the online menus I have seen are outdated. The actual menu is much more limited than the online stuff would lead you to believe, and the prices are marginally higher. FOOD QUALITY: IMO, the recipes they use at Chen's are austere and sparing. Overall, the food is bland. Portions are a decent size. They have very definite ideas about which vegetable goes with which meat, for some of the dishes. Celery goes in the cashew chicken, to the exclusion of any other vegetables. Onions go in the Mongolian beef, to the exclusion of any other vegetables. Case closed. The result of this philosophy is that some of the dishes are extremely bland. One of the first items I tried on the menu here was cashew chicken, and I say, without exaggeration, that the meal was about 50% celery. It's not that I don't like celery, it's fine, I just don't want so much of it. And it's also not the case that they were skimpy on the chicken or the cashews - I would say the quantity given of each was more than fair, for the price. My problem was with the lack in variety in vegetables and seasonings, which I know they include in some of the other dishes, so I'm confused as to why they are so strict in applying limitations in some specific cases. It seems to me that these restrictive dishes would be improved with a mixture of onions, celery, and carrots as a baseline. Beyond that, I would say the sauces are generally tasteless. When it comes to Chinese food, I expect bold spices and flavorings - garlic, ginger, chilis, soy sauce, oyster sauce, fermented bean pastes, black vinegar, etc. Here the sauces tend to be little more than water, salt, sugar, and cornstarch. I recommend passing on any of the dishes that involve fried nuggets of meat. On one occasion, for example, I got the sweet and sour pork, and found the nuggets to be so hard as to be borderline inedible. I don't mean crunchy, I mean rock hard. The meat was also dry and stringy. MENU FAVORITES: Go for the dinner combo, no matter the time of day. Both the egg rolls and the crab rangoon make for a nice little fried treat. Personally, I recommend the beef and bell peppers, or beef and broccoli. MENU FAILS: Don't bother with the fried rice. It's over-salted and greasy. No wok hey. (Same is true of the noodles.) The plain steamed rice is much more pleasant to eat. FRONT OF HOUSE SERVICE: Every time I have visited Chen's, it has ALWAYS been the same lady working the cash register. I wouldn't be surprised if she runs the show six days a week. (Can my girl please have a couple weeks off?!) She's very polite and cordial; friendly, but also efficient. If she isn't standing at the front, just ring the little bell and she'll come up. The restaurant is currently takeout only. (Looks like it used to be a buffet in the past, but I suppose that was shut down during Covid, and they haven't brought it back.) KITCHEN SERVICE: Aside from that time I got the sweet and sour pork, I would say the quality of cooking is good, overall. Vegetables are tender but retain an al dente texture. Most fried items are golden and crispy. ATMOSPHERE: Take out only. The building tends to be dark. Cold in the winter. Hot in the summer. (Gotta save on utility costs, I get it.) On one occasion, I was waiting for my food and an Asian customer came in to pick up her order; I got to overhear the two of them speaking in their language, which I thought was cool - a rare experience for me, in Kirksville. read more

Food is great I love the pork with garlic sauce and twice cooked pork they have quick service and nice people run the place.

A little hole in the wall off the square. I tried the lunch buffet. The selection was very limited to the basic American Chinese, perhaps four or five selections. But what they had was fresh, hot and very good. The Hot and Sour Soup was very good. They had a single chef, and one poor server running the front of the house and busing and hosting too. I had the twice cooked pork delivered. It came with white rice. I also had hot and sour soup and spring rolls. The soup was good, rice okay and spring roll okay. Quick take out. Their Sweet and Sour chicken was very good. The vegetables were fresh and crispy. The sauce was as i expected. I would definitely order it again. The Crab Rangoon were very small and I'd probably skip them next time even though I really like Crab Rangoon- these just didn't measure up. They had very little filling, too. I ordered two meals, General's chicken and Hot & Spicy Chicken. The General's chicken was ok, but the Hot & Spicy Chicken was AWFUL. It was chunks of unchewable chicken and cloyingly sweet sauce, not a hint of spice. Since the restaurant is take out only we didn't discover the problem until arriving home. My guess is the chef mixed up the orders and we got orange chicken. In any event, I will never order there again. If this is the best Chinese food in Kirksville, I suggest you opt for Mexican or Macdonalds! read more

Go to Kirksville quite a bit to try new places to eat. Drove by this off the square, not much to look at from outside. Seated right away, there was only 2 other people eating. Buffet was up but towards end of lunch so opted to order from menu. Prices were unbeatable for lunch and dinner. Food came on nice white square plates with the perfect proportions. Several came in for to-go orders and they also deliver. Definitely put this on the list to return! read more

Food was great! Fresh and reasonably priced, they even made my chicken without breading. Service was friendly and on point.

It was good. Had sweet and sour chicken, beef and broccoli, and pork fried rice. And they deliver.

We eat at Chen's Palace frequently. The food is great, and yes, there is a Chinese menu that we really enjoy. The actual restaurant interior really needs an upgrade, but it is the BEST Chinese restaurant in Kirksville. read more
