This was an average buffet- I have had worse and I have had better. I found a few things I really liked, especially the station where they cook your noodles for you! This place is one of the few dim sum/hot pot places in the New Orleans area. Every time my parents come down from MS we have dim sum on Sundays, which is the only time it is available. It is a hit or miss. The first time we went we had amazing food - hot, fresh. This time is wasn't so hot, kind of mediocre. However, it wasn't bad that I would write it off. This review is for the dim sum, as I've never been to the buffet. It's nice to have the push cart style dim sum available in the area. As other reviewers have said, it's shrimp- and pork- heavy. The dumplings are standard, as are the buns. Some of my favorites are the sticky rice and the spare ribs. I really had no complaints about Panda King until my most recent visit, where our server told us that we would be charged for water unless we also ordered tea. Incredulous, I told her that I have never had to pay for tap water in previous visits, and she proceeded to lecture me in a loud voice about how we were sitting at the table to dine in and should not protest about paying for beverages. This kind of ruined my dining experience, because 1) I have always had access to tap water, and 2) she should not have yelled at me or lectured me. But unfortunately I have experienced that kind of leave-if-you-want attitude from Asian-American owned restaurants before. I really wish this would stop, because this gives all the rest of us a bad representation in the service industry. So I don't know how soon I'll be back, cuz this made me kinda upset. On Saturdays & Sundays (until 3 or 4PM), PK serves dim sum push cart style. In comparison to what I've had, they're merely scratching the surface. But because you can't find it anywhere else in NOLA, they're good & definitely 'scratch the itch' when you're fiending. I almost always get: 1) Chicken feet 2) Ha Gow - shrimp dumpling 3) Siew Mai - pork dumpling 4) Char Siew Bao - Steamed BBQ pork buns 5) Steamed Spare Ribs with Black Bean sauce. TIP: Mix the sate (chili oil), with a dash of soy sauce, & (for acidity) a few jalapenos. Dip whatever (usually the dumplings & chicken feet for me) in it. Okay, now for their buffet review. I am just gonna state that I am real bougie when it comes to buffets. I really don't like any buffet but damn do I enjoy this one. That's just saying, I've probably eaten here four or five times. My review is for the weekend Dim Sum only. I've not eaten at the buffet next door. Until Vicky brought me over to the dim sum world, I had only read about this lovely tradition or seen it on TV. And I can see why folk are fans. You order beaucoup small plates of delicious and spin them to each other on a lazy susan. What's not to love? Service is different and you sometimes have to ask for things, but all the servers have been polite and helpful. If you know about a dim sum dish that is usually offered, don't hesitate to ask. You may have missed it on a cart or it may not have been offered to you yet. Standouts for me are the steamed dumplings, the Chinese broccoli, the noodle dishes (which are veggie), the gyoza, and the egg & rice cake dish that looked like hashbrowns. I've only been here once, but I know I'm going to come here a lot more often now that I've figured out how this place works and the food is so good. If you want dim sum: Come early, they open at 1030 am on Saturday and Sunday. (In Hong Kong, dim sum is their version of breakfast/brunch.) Definitely before noon for a good seat. The entrance for dim sum is on the far right hand side of the restaurant. They seat you, and then pick your foods from the carts that they push around. Be sure to carefully ask for certain things if you have any allergies. For example, I ordered shui mai which normally does not have shrimp, but it does here. Doh! for the person with the shellfish allergy. If you want the buffet, you enter on the left hand side of the restaurant, and that opens at 11 am on weekends. I think the quality of the food today was a lot fresher versus the last time I was here. Service has gotten better. This time we were early. Cart pushed dim sum starts at 1030 am. We were there by 11 am. It wasn't super busy but the hostess guy wanted to seat us near the bathroom. Not cool. We picked out own table. We ordered the tea and the policy hasn't changed. If one person gets tea, the whole table is charged $0.70 per person at the table. Our waitress at first was standoffish but she warmed up to me after and was super attentive. This is about the buffet side. I havent experienced the dim sum side yet. We go here becasue my kids love it. Its ok to me but nothing great. My kids really are crazy about all the fresh fruit and pudding. Oh and chinese chicken nuggets hehehe. I will try some of the very odd food from time to time but the kids get grossed out. Panda king hot pot is bomb!!! Such a cool concept to come to Nola. Each person gets their own heating element for their hot pot. You start by choosing off your broth: chicken, beef, vegetable, or tom yum. I chose Tom Yum because Yum. Unlimited broth as well. (PK hack, they let you bring your food to go if you can't finish it all). Next, you can order your meats and drinks with the server. We got the pork belly and the beef brisket. Three ladies roll around carts that you can choose items from, they stamp your clipboard hanging off the side of the table just like dim sum. One cart has noodles, eggs, random things like a million different mushrooms. One cart has all of the seafood: mussels, scallops, shrimp, clams. The last cart has all the veggies: Napa cabbage, Bok Choy, etc. It's all affordable too! IMO, at least. All dishes were either 8.99 or cheaper! Meats ran high, shrimp was 5.99, and veggies and such were cheaper than that. A little goes a long way with hot pot. There's a side bar with sauces, scallions, toppings. They had more Tom yum paste, and i definitely got some to add more kick to my broth. The shrimp was yummy and fresh. Can't go wrong with vegetables. We got the udon noodles and egg noodles. Ok today was my first time here for dim sum. I've been to other dim sum restaurants in atlanta and los angeles and this one is right up there with them on well cooked dim sum. The wait to be seated was within minutes of walking in the door. The service was superb and workers are really friendly. I can't wait to go back again... Wow!! My parents introduced this place to my husband and I while we were in town visiting. We went at noon on a Sunday and it was packed! They serve dim sum from the carts and not sure if this is every day or just on Sundays. Either way, totally worth the visit . They have a good thing going. Carts are pushed up and down the aisles with all sorts of Chinese delicacies . My favorites were the steamed dumplings, Chinese broccoli and the fried calamari and scallops. Also, save room for the carts of the desserts. My personal faves were the egg tarts and the buns with the golden crust. Each table has a small clipboard that the employees stamp when you take items off the carts. This review is for the new Hot Pot addition to the restaurant. In my opinion, Buffet is a 2/5 and Dimsum is a 3/5. Panda King recently added hotpot tables to be served in the evening to night. Each table as a separate hotpot mini stove so that each seated person has their own broth and control over what goes in it. It's nothing new, but definitely a neat thing coming to NOLA. The broths offered were Chicken, Beef, Vegetable, and Tom Yum (spicy). I got the spicy broth while others in my party got the beef. The spicy broth tasted like a bland spicy. It would be spicy initially, but it would go away fast. It was like spicy water. As for the beef broth, it was pretty bland in my opinion. However, they do offer a sauce bar so you can make your own dipping sauces or if you wanted to add it into your broth for enhanced taste. As for protein, once sat down, they give you a menu and it includes a selection of beefs/proteins to order for your hotpot. This included pork belly, brisket, filet mignon, salmon, tuna, and more. These were generally prices from $8-10. Prices are really reaching a bit here. As for the rest of the items for hotpot such as vegetables, mushrooms, noodles, they come from a pushcart where you can just ask to get. These were generally about $4-$8. A bit expensive considering a serving of small vegetables was $4! Making your hotpot experiences whole and "right", you need proteins, vegetables, and noodles. Getting all of these, you could be reaching to almost $30 a person! Hotpot generally doesn't "fill" me, but almost satisfies me. I could always eat more, but not at this price. For hotpot, this is quite expensive. I would rather be at home with family making it for a lot less. Even for the convenience of having hotpot at this restaurant, nearly $30 a person is expensive! It should be a try for everyone, I'm not the biggest hotpot fan, but I love it when family makes it. Although, what got this place going is the variety. You definitely do have a lot of things to choose from when it comes to making your hotpot special and your own. The highlights of my hotpot were dumplings and their whole shrimp balls, very nice! I have tried their dimsum, buffet, and hotpot. dimsum- authentic but nothing compared to cities with high concentrations of Asians. That being said beggars cannot be choosers. I find that they have a lovely selection of authentic food- congee with thousand year old egg, custard buns, he fen/drunken noodles, shumai, dumplings, luobuogao/taro cake, and rice rolls. Please don't get the xiaolongbao/soup dumplings. Those were a disappointment buffet- $12 per adult. Wide WIIIDE selection ranging from american food (think mac n cheese) to chinese food to sushi to something like Mongolian BBQ where they cook it fresh. Sushi was not the freshest. They have my favorite chinese dish - yuxiangchezi/ stir fried egg plant in hot garlic sauce - so I can't complain. hot pot - OH MY GOSH THEIR HOT POT STYLE UPSETS ME SO MUCH. Basically it's cheaper if you split with people. You have to pay for your broth, meat, and ingredients separately. Therefore, say you have three people you want extras like tofu, kabocha, and mushrooms, it will be cheaper because they give you HUGE portions which I can only guess are meant for sharing. That being said I prefer hot pot where you get a little of everything so you have a well-rounded meal. The soup base is pretty americanized - the meat soup base had Frenchie's fried onion in it. ATTENTION! This is the absolute worst restaurant on the Westbank. No issues with the service what so ever. I've visited panda king often, not because I but a friend enjoys their food. Pretty much everytime I visited, there has been roaches spotted on the wall or near our booth. I have personally been there on 3 occasions where a customer screamed out they seen a rat running on the floor. 1 instance where their own employee was scared of a rat I guess in the server area or whatever. Everytime I go there I only ate the steamed veggies, fruit, and fried bananas. That is because all the other food is just so damn depressing. Firstly half the time the food is not ever warm when you serve yourself. Secondly, you can go and decided and try the food for yourself, it doesn't not taste right. And it's not just me because me and my family have been here once and no return since. I've witness, who I assumed to be manager or owner, scream at my server just because she forgot to give one of her other tables a straw. And I won't lie, poor lady looked as if she wanted to cry. My servicer today became non existence after he gave us our drinks. I had to flagged down other servers to get stuff like extra napkin and refill drinks. And what disgust me the most is while we were eating, the server would reach over and grab our dishes that's not even empty!! It still had food in it and the server try to take it away!! My last straw was when he grab my sauce dish when I'm not even done. The guy asked if I want it back. Want it back?!?! Dude you have your finger in it! Why would I want it back?!?! We got fed up so I took my check to the front, pay for it and left. I remembered this place used to be very good. Pippin hot food and decent service. I was SO excited to hear that the buffet was opening back up! After 3 long years, we'd finally have back a good buffet on the westbank. WRONG! The service, the food, all of it, took a serious nose dive south. There are now 2 bars for hot pot. So the old hibachi bar, gone. The bar that housed the american selections, now sauces. Do we really need an ENTIRE bar for sauces?!There are things on the buffet like beef macaroni, beef stew and chicken fajitas. Did I miss the fact that we are at a chinese restaurant? The chinese dishes were few and far in between. The food was subpar and most of it cold and tasteless. My beloved eggplant was even ruined. The desserts? Frost bitten solo cups of ice cream and extremely stale funfetti cakes with mushy oreos on top. The only good thing was this tropically tasting cake. But the absolute worse part, the price, freaking $18.99! Are we kidding right now? Absolutely insane for this quality and type of food. I am so saddened that this was not what it used to be. Our glasses sat dry for most of the dinner and our table was covered with dirty plates. I was not used to this as our glasses were always filled and tables cleaned. At least one Sunday out of the month, my family and I come here for the dim sum. It's currently the only dim sum worth coming to in New Orleans (correct me if I'm wrong). The waiting area to be seating is very limited. This isnt so great especially on a cold day when the front door has to be opened so often. If you can choose a table, I would choose the table wayyyy in the back by the kitchen. This is where all the fresh carts roll out and you get first dibs on the dishes! Let me backtrack for a minute... If you haven't eaten dim sum before, it can be described as a conveyor belt with food on it to choose from as you sit down and wait for the next dish to come but instead of a belt, you have girls/women pushing hot carts with delicious choices. I'll be honest. I hate buffets. I despise the concept with every ounce of my being. I can write an entire diatribe on the evils of buffets, but that wouldn't be appropriate here. With that in mind, I bring you my review for Panda Garden. By the way, I understand that on weekends they have dim sum and a nice restaurant offering up fine dining to the side. I'd like to go back and try that. In light of the fact that I don't eat meat, this review is a bit skewed. If you do eat meat, you will be happy to see that there's tons of it. If you are trying to eat healthy, there is the hibachi option with calamari, chicken, shrimp and red meats that I can't remember. At lunch, it's insanely cheap (with tax, our bill came to about 18 bucks). Although I was tempted to try Tan Dinh for lunch while stopping at the amazing Hong Kong Market, I really just wanted a pile of steamed veggies and figured that would be easier to find at a Chinese restaurant, so here we landed. My friend, on a similar mission, although she eats meat, too, was pretty happy to see they have a hibachi grill. I didn't realize at first that this meant you can pick your protein and a ton of fresh vegetables and have them make it to order, thereby allowing you to skip the scores of unhealthy trays of grease and sugar-laden "Chinese" favorites. Once I did, I was hopeful. Until I took a bite and it was clear that they put sugar in the sauce they cook it with. I could not eat it and ended up wasting an entire plate of vegetables. So it goes with buffets. Waste or eating to excess. What are you going to do? Next time, I'll just say no sauce and it should be fine. I actually think I will go back now that I know I'm not limited to one tray of (actually really good) crispy Chinese broccoli in sesame oil and one tray of extremely overcooked "steamed" vegetables (steamed, my ass! I know I saw some kind of oil lurking around in there). What else? There is sushi (rolls only) and I was pretty happy to see an avocado cucumber roll on there-- my favorite. It's not bad, either. Seaweed salad too (sadly, it contains imitation crab in it. Ick). A huge salad bar. Chinese donuts and other interesting-looking desserts that I didn't try. Soft serve ice cream. Oh and my favorite thing had to be the condiment area where they had a bunch of different hot sauces (chili oil! Sambal!). And then of course, there's the entire row of fried horrors. I'm sorry, but fried food in Chinese restaurants seems more disgusting than anywhere else. I remember as a kid thinking that even the french fries tasted like egg rolls. My first trip for dim sum since moving to New Orleans! I love dim sum; the ides of picking 5-6 different foods from rolling carts throughout a room excites me beyond belief. The setting? A big, bright room which wasn't too crowded for a Saturday afternoon, which kinda' surprised us. Thanks in advance to Dorothy & Godwin - I'll be using their correct spellings to describe my flavor memories: *Ha Gow & Shu Mai: I always skip these; many places do not make their own, and they don't excite me. *Cheng Fun - rice paper rolls with meat inside. The shrimp version is in my top five favorite dishes. *Chicken Feet - It's not the tiny bones that annoy me - it's when they don't remove the claws. anyway, I passed. *Fried Taro - Taro is not my friend. For this westerner, the only way I would enjoy it is if I suffered from pica. and I even like natto. *Baked BBQ Pork Buns - sweet BBQ pork wrapped in a golden browned bun. Stuffed with sweet pork goodness, and a great choice for the less than adventurous. *Gai Lan - I always order some - I think of it as a good palate cleanser. Any dumplings with shrimp and scallops were ordered and enjoyed with delish. The servers were friendly and quick with everything. The downside? We come here every other weekend at least, sometimes with friends, sometimes just the two of us. The pushcart ladies beeline it to us and totally know us. I'm not so sure that's something to be proud of but hey... when one of you is Chinese and one of you is Vietnamese, you got the bases covered when it comes to language.. and when you're from Cali, you know the food and you don't fuck around. Things I like to get: -Congee: Rice porridge with thousand year old egg (chemically processed egg that is black and green... and yummy) and pork. -Har gow: Shrimp dumpling, not made from a frozen bag. -Shu mai: Shrimp and pork dumplings, also not frozen. V. GOOD. -Simmered pork spare ribs: Very fatty, doesn't come with pumpkin like in HK or Cali but sometimes it does have jalapeno peppers in addition to the bell peppers. -Char siu pork: It's very tender and the portion is huge. We usually have to pick between this and the... -Roast duck: Oh god so good. Side note: Sometimes I want to kidnap a duck from the canal and roast it myself but I don't think I could get the skin as crispy so... why bother. -Fried Taro Ball: I love this. It's like.. crispy fuzzy shit on the outside... taro and minced beef inside. -Dan Tuan: Egg custard, they don't outsource to a bakery, it's made right here. Very tiny though. -Tofu pudding with hot ginger syrup: Not as creamy as I like at home but you take what you can get. Daniel will eat all of it in 1.5 seconds. -Char siu bao: Pork bun for the kiddies. Meh. I prefer the baked ones but the ones here are just okay. Portions are small, prices are moderate ($2-$8 per plate). Doesn't satisfy all my cravings as they don't have everything I want from dim sum, but it's good enough, especially for New Orleans. The chef is from Hong Kong but I think the managers/business partners? are probably Vietnamese, as are most of the servers (especially the younger folks who look confused when you speak to them in Chinese). Protip: Get the Egg Custard Tarts and the Sesame Balls. Oh, and just about everything else, too. Everything offered on the dim sum carts is absolutely delicious, from the various dumplings and noodle dishes to the meaty morsels and turnip cakes. The only downside is that it can add up quickly if you want to try everything (and you will want to). Go with a group if you want a huge variety. Just dining for 2-3? Stick to the smallest offerings.
