After we got off work today. Charla took me down Magazine St to Miss Shirley's. I knew Miss Shirley from the Royal China days in Metairie. Back then it was my first Dim Sum experience and then when I worked in Heritage Plaza during Katrina recovery days we ate lunch there at least once a week. But this is all new! I'm so happy for Miss Shirley and the amazing place that has her name on it on Magazine St. The food was exceptional. Everything from the short ribs to the Soup Dumplings, to the Moo Shu with those paper thin pancakes. Everything was fresh and fantastic. My wife and I visited Miss Shirley's on a co-worker's recommendation. Despite there being no line when we arrived, the wait for a table was a little over an hour. Thankfully, Magazine Street offers plenty to do to pass the time! When we were finally seated, our table was toward the back near the kitchen. The interior is a cozy but tightly packed space, which means it gets pretty loud with all the chatter bouncing around. However, any issues with the crowded feel vanish once the food arrives. The food and service easily make up for it. Our waiter brought out complimentary fried beef dumplings with a house-made chili sauce that tasted incredible. We ordered the Pineapple Fried Rice (shrimp, pork, chicken, egg, pineapple, and onions) and it was absolute perfection. We came here on a Sunday, so there was a wait. I think we waited maybe 45 minutes. We ate an empanada at a nearby restaurant to satiate our hunger lol and we also went thrifting at a nearby store to kill time. We had eaten a lot of meat on this trip, so we were desperately craving some vegetables. Visiting this restaurant was such a good choice. When we finally got our table, the service was quick and efficient. They brought out the complimentary fried dumplings and cucumber salad, which were good. We also ordered pork soup dumplings, fried rice, green beans, asparagus, spinach (?), and chicken wings. The star of the show was surprisingly the GREEN BEANS. Simply SPECTACULAR. We all agreed that was our favorite dish. My least favorite dish was the asparagus; it tastes plain. It's a pretty cute restaurant. There are some circular tables for family-style eating and regular tables for smaller groups. Miss Shirley introduced herself to us and checked on our table a couple times. We had seen a viral video of this restaurant, which showed the charming Miss Shirley, so it was really lovely to see how charming she truly is. After eating so much hearty and rich NoLa food, my friends and I were dying for some veggies or Asian food. As we were gallivanting around Magazine street, Dom found a Chinese spot from some IG reel. Since it was Mother's Day, there was a line of hungry families but we went thrifting while we waited. They use brown rice instead of white for their fried rice and it still managed to be flavorful and had a nice texture. Pork soup dumplings were decent. I didn't have any salt and pepper wings but they looked nice 'n crispy. Aaaand.. we ordered not one, not two, but three dishes of veggies! Asparagus, pea shoots, and garlicky green beans (a fan fav!) were devoured so fast. A leafy or green veggie hates to see us come through. Ms. Shirley herself said hi to our table and checked in on our dining experience. Every table gets complimentary mini beignets and fortune cookies at the end of the meal.. sweet mix of Southern hospitality and Asian "eat more"!!" mentality. read more

Unexpectedly came in for a quick bite to eat in between meals. The restaurant was quite busy when we visited. The food wasn't the best Chinese food I've ever had but it was pretty good. When you first sit down, they bring out complimentary dumplings with a trio of sauces. We got the salt and pepper squid which were nice thick pieces of squid. The shrimp toast was pretty tasty. Nice crisp and stuffing. The steamed sticky rice in a lotus leaf was HUGE. That in itself could be a meal and the meats inside were a good hearty size not all chopped up. The shrimp toast and the squid come on top of greens which I didn't really like as they wilt with the heat of the items. The service was great! Our server was friendly, welcoming, and quick. We ended up getting: - Crab Rangoon - Beef short ribs - Fried shrimp rice - Pork lo mein noodles - Sesame chicken - Bottle of Sake Upon arrival since there was a bit of a wait they brought over some Pork dumplings ! Went on a Monday night at 6pm and the wait was ~45 mins, so we put our name down and walked down Magazine to The Bulldog to grab a drink. the place was super busy, pretty loud and full to the max. Server was friendly and offered a rundown of the menu since we were all first timers. It's more of Chinese restaurant fused with Nola local flavors. Best things on the menu: - dragon dumplings = Xiao long bao / soup dumplings with red wine vinegar. Went here for a birthday dinner and we arrived as soon as they opened because there aren't any reservations. We were greeted and seated immediately and we ordered some drinks. I had the Kinda Famous and Yuzu Collins cocktails. Both were delicious and effective! We ordered all dim sum items. Wow! So glad I finally made it here. The energy was so vibrant the second you walk in. There was a lot of people waiting, but with the quick service and super efficient and friendly staff, everything moved quickly. Our group sat at a large round table that was perfect for sharing plates. We tried so much delicious dim sum. My favorite was an eggplant dish. It was perfectly cooked packed with fresh, delicious flavor. Miss Shirley herself stopped by to see how our food was. I think that is such a lovely touch to have an owner who is still so involved, even with all of the restaurant's success. After we were done, they dropped off beignets for a post-dinner treat. I went with a group so we tried soooo many items from the menu I can't even recall them all. But I did try them all lol and I really did like each dish. I'm not even a fan of Chinese food but I am absolutely in LOVE with Miss Shirley's. You should definitely be prepared for a wait depending on what time you go but it's all worth it. The food is outstanding, fresh, and made to order. The service is amazing. We visited during Mardi Gras and our waiter was still super quick. Miss Shirley changed my life. The food was well worth the 1 hour wait. When we were seated, we were greeted with welcome dumplings and cucumber salad. We placed our order and food came out as it was ready. I believe the first order hit the table within 10 minutes. Miss Shirley herself, came and checked on us multiple times. The queen runs a tight ship and everything we tasted was phenomenal. I WILL be returning. We came here on Christmas Day and it was very very crowded!! We had to wait a while, but that was okay--we were expecting to as that day was very busy. The restaurant is very big and they have many options, but as a vegetarian, I basically didn't have much to choose from. The two things I did get though, I didn't enjoy at all. We did have a short wait for a table, but the service is prompt and facilitates rapid turnaround, without giving a rushed feeling. We ordered from both the entree and Dim Sum selections. Takeout review: Honestly, for as much hype as this place gets, I was left a bit underwhelmed. The food was okay and seasoned well, but nothing I had really stood out. I'd probably skip the egg drop soup next time, it just wasn't very good. The highlight for me was definitely the ground chicken lettuce wraps. Great place to get dim sum around New Orleans. Well, it did have a hint of a modern fusion take on it. I did enjoy the presentation and the taste. I lined up 10 minutes before 5 PM on a Friday and there was a couple big parties ahead of me. After being seated and ordering the place filled up. The service was great and the food came out fast. My favorite was the short rib, the shumai. The shrimp dumpling, and the soup dumpling didn't make my expectations as they were a little bit soggy on the outside in other words, the dumpling wrapper itself was soggy. This restaurant didn't have shrimp or pork shumai, pork belly, harchong noodles, chicken feet, and so many other things. We ordered the crabmeat shumai and it was awful. The crispy noodles were bad. Some of the freshest tastiest Chinese food we've had in years. The hot and sour soup is spectacular, and my wife really enjoyed her egg drop soup. Her lettuce wraps were particularly delicious, and the lettuce was fresh. The vegetarian egg rolls were good, but I've had the pork egg rolls at our last visit and thought they were better than the all vegetable egg roll. I'm not a big fan of white meat chicken, so I wasn't enthralled with either the orange garlic chicken or the sesame chicken, but the breading and sauce was fresh and flavorful. If they had been made with thigh meat, I'd be all in. Our wait time Monday at noon was about 15 minutes, so not bad. Miss Shirley, the owner is very involved, pleasant and omnipresent, and the entire staff works together with efficiently and pleasantries. Our waiter the last two visits was Bo, who was certainly part and parcel of the efficiency of this little gem. if you didn't know Miss Shirley won a James Beard, you could certainly just walk by this place without knowing the culinary treasures that await inside the non descript facade. read more

I can't believe it has taken me this long to try the locally-beloved Miss Shirley's, but yes, it has happened and I'm adding my name to the long list of people who adore this place. In a city like New Orleans where there's great food at every turn, the options for good Chinese have been limited and Miss Shirley's is known to be in a league of its own. You may or may not know, they don't do reservations. I actually don't mind that, it makes it an even playing field, but I do wish they had Yelp Waitlist because that makes life so much easier. That said, the four of us rolled up on a Friday night, gave our name and were called in no longer than 15 minutes later. I admittedly was disappointed that there didn't seem to be a single item on the dim sum menu that I could eat. I love a good bean curd skin roll, so I was sad not to see this common offering at the very least. There's an enticing, but limited vegetable section of the menu (string beans in black bean sauce, I'll be back for you) and our waitress was helpful in offering up tofu as a protein option. I went with basic, mixed vegetables, which is a generous portion. I asked for it extra spicy buuuuut... it wasn't even slightly spicy. I do realize that I should have said spice level 5 or something! I'm just that person. A nod to the phenomenal service here. I loved everyone that I encountered and Miss Shirley herself came over to our table to say hi. Ok and they had me with that cocktail list! I didn't partake but this is just another reason to return. My favorite homestyle Chinese restaurants in New York often don't have much in the way of cocktails (with the exception of the old school tiki drinks), but at Miss Shirley's you get quality cocktails and a decent selection of wines too. There's something that's so genuinely delightful about Miss Shirley's that makes me love it, even if the menu doesn't have a lot in the realm of plant-based options. Parked on a neighborhood street that wasn't too far. Was seated right away. Friendly staff and very modern menu. Loved the beautiful fish tank upon entering.
