I think China Doll is in the top best Chinese restaurants in the city and surrounding areas. The portions are hefty and the food is typically served hot and fresh. I recently had dinner there. The employees were super friendly and seated us right away. I ordered the crab rangoons, general tso chicken, and shrimp fried rice. The crab rangoons do not lack filling! While the flavor is fine, I do wish the filling was a tad sweeter. The general tso chicken was as expected. I prefer mine a bit spicier but that didn't detract from overall flavor. The shrimp fried rice was a little bland. It definitely required soy sauce! The interior is quintessential OG Chinese restaurant. A bit rustic and dim. Beautiful and spacious. read more

I took a chance and tried this place. I've never been able to find a good Chinese place that is similar or better than my hometown favorite place "China Star". Went here from a tiktok video and let's just say the plate I had was soooo good! They were super packed but it only took about 10minutes for my order. Staff was super friendly and they text you once your order is ready! I had the sweet and sour chicken plate, the egg roll was massive, it had all three meats (shrimp, chicken and pork. Sophia and I decided to order dinner takeout from here during our trip here in Louisiana. The last time we ordered, both of us were disappointed with our selections. Unfortunately, this night wasn't much better. We called in our takeout orders which went off without any problems. Picking them up was seamless as well with the staff being courteous while dealing with other customers and setting up takeout orders nicely. My order for the evening was a dinner combo plate of sweet and sour chicken with fried rice and an egg roll (sweet and sour sauce on the side). It was a disappointment. The chiicken was good once dipped in the sauce which had a kick to it, but the rice was bland and the egg roll was soggy. I'm not sure if it was moisture caused by the foam container. I'm pretty sure they used to have the egg rolls packaged separately where they would be well kept, but it was a major letdown. Sophia had the same reaction with her selection and couldn't finish either. Any hope for a redemption was totally lost that evening. I ordered the lunch beef and broccoli and a hot and sour soup. Both were good. Not the best I've ever had but definitely not the worst. They compensate by providing very large portions so now I have lunch for another day as well. The lunch combo was around $15 with white rice and a side of Cho Cho which is their take on friend dumplings. It had shrimp, pork, and a few small green onions inside with a tangly light sauce. The beef was very tender and the broccoli was fresh and still had a nice crunch to it. It's work a stop if you're in that area. The to go service was polite and efficient. And the inside gives very much American Chinese food decor. Dark and dandy dining room with Michael Jackson playing on the radio. Over all I paid $25 including a tip. I went to China Doll in Harvey and had a terrible and dangerous experience. When my daughter ordered, I specifically asked the waitress multiple times if the two items she was choosing between had sesame or nuts, because she was allergic. Then I went to explain her allergy is sensitive and can be triggered if they use the same cooking utensils or pots. When my daughter got her food she ate one of her ribs that she really enjoyed then took a bite of her rice and had an immediate allergic reaction. The waitress came over and we asked if there is sesame and she said we cook most things with sesame oil, she thought I said sesame seeds, which I never do because I know a lot of asian restaurants use sesame oil. I had to rush to get her a Benadryl at the shell gas station and since she couldn't eat anything there we went to Chick-fil-A. I went back to try and enjoy my food with my family and my food was cold by then. When we got the bill we asked the waitress to remove the rib dinner, and she refused because she ate one rib and her step father had one. We explained that was not good enough, and she said she could take half off. Then I asked to speak to the manager who finally took the cost of her plate off. If this was one of her more severe allergies, I would have had to administer an epi pen and spend the night in the hospital. Neither the waitress or the manager expressed apologies, but instead seemed annoyed at their mistake that could have really hurt my child. read more

Writing this review post nap because woosh. I heard about this place from a coworker so while on this side we decided to try it out. First, it was packed in there but we received service promptly. The waiter was really nice when he arrived. Off to the food! O.m.g. I am a firm believer in another spot in Nola but this place is just as great. We got the dark meat boneless chicken with vegetables and the sweet and sour chicken. The batter and the cook of the chicken straight perfection. The rice top tier as well. Only thing I wasn't a fan of was hubs sweet and sour sauce. Good came out fast and hot. I'm getting hungry again just thinking about it. If near the area this is a must try. China Doll has been a family favorite since I was a child. Be it birthdays, graduations or date night, it is the perfect place for it all. My go-to dish is boneless chicken with double rice and a Mai Tai. My second favorite? Shrimp with Lobster Sauce...talk about good. The staff is pretty much the same and the service is friendly and consistent. The fish tank is still there as is the bead curtain at the front of the restaurant. I love their crab rangoons, and their hot and sour soup and empress lo mein are great as well. My wife is a Mandarin chicken fiend and appreciated that they still serve it the old school way with lettuce underneath, topped with green onions and sliced almonds, though she didn't care for the gravy. See in San Diego Mandarin Chicken is fried Chicken bathed in a sweet red sauce. It's bad. In New Orleans we just do it a different way and if you know you know. This is one of my favorite Chinese restaurants on the West bank. The food is outstanding. I started with the hot and sour soup. I then had the lunch special of General Tso's chicken. The portions are huge and you will need to take home leftovers for an additional meal. The service is SO fast that my soup arrived, and then almost immediately thereafter, my lunch arrived. I've been going there for years, but I was checking some things out around me every time I go they put us in the back so I told the lady I didn't wanna sit in the back so they put us out front so I paid attention as time went on. We got food but I noticed all the Black people they bring them to the back all the Caucasians persuasion goes in the front so I've been going there for years. Saw pretty good reviews and thought we'd check this place out. Got lo mein with everything and it was extremely salty and it did not look appetizing. The shrimp also smelled and tasted very fishy!! The egg roll was very big and it contained lots of smelly shrimp. I picked out the shrimp. I asked the server if I could get something else and she nonchalantly walked away, didn't seem as though she really wanted to be our server. The manager came over and I had to explain what the problem with the lo mein was. They give you lots of food but that doesn't mean it's good. I exchanged it for General Tso chicken with the shrimp fried rice and they didn't give me an egg roll with the order. My date got General Tso chicken. The shrimp in His shrimp fried rice and the egg roll was also smelly, not fresh and we dared not eat it. The food is pretty pricey but I didn't think it was worth it. They didn't have a lot of likable usual traditional options. It was a decent amount of people there but most were picking up orders. The ambiance and decor showered very dark and dim. I walked in and was met with a line. I asked for a Togo menu while I waited, but was pointed to a paper menu taped to the wall. I took a picture of the menu with my phone and waited back in line. Although taken back with the immediate experience, once it's your turn to order, the workers are very nice and pleasant from taking your order to giving your order. I'm looking for a general tso spot on the westbank and wanted to give this a try. I got home was surprised. Normally general tsos would come with broccoli, but this one from China doll had onions and green bell peppers. It was an off-putting experience. I've dined at China Doll since elementary school! I even worked here for one summer during high school taking "To-Go" orders. The owners and their daughter were always so sweet and caring during my time there. There's not much I can add that hasn't been said to highlight the high quality and consistency of food at China Doll. As a former employee the one thing that sets China Doll apart is the cleanliness of this restaurant from front to back. My favorite items from the menu are the shrimp fried rice and Cho Cho. The shrimp fried rice filled with shrimp and the rice boiled perfectly not gummy at all. The Cho Cho is always fried to perfection and crispy. It's even tasty the day after. During Covid, indoor dining is restricted however the take out counter is open and very efficient. All employees wore masks and plexiglass placed at the take our counter. read more

I crave Cho Cho. Everything else doesn't compare. The egg is nice. The fried rice is fried rice. The Cho Cho is amazing. Typically I order 2 orders of Cho Cho and I don't wanna be bothered. However sometimes the Cho Cho isn't crispy, I guess the cook is busy. The condiment sauce that comes with Cho Cho is really good although I prefer the Cho Cho as it comes, sauce not needed.
