The recent bipolar weather has been driving me a bit mad and inducing my laziness, so I havn't been cooking as much as I should be. These days call for random eat-out weeknights, and since Jo was craving Italian, we decided on Pane e Vino. I've been here before and found it quite mediocre for what it's worth, but for the sake of time, we decided on this conveniently located restaurant. The ambience is quite casual, especially for a semi-pricy Italian restaurant. Might be because it's also a cafe-type restaurant? It didn't bother me, especially since they had celebrity designed plates on their wall - which honestly is a bit random. No complaints though, cause they have a plate designed by Billy Martin of Good Charlotte (as well as Geoffrey Rush and Cate Blanchett). =P I don't quite remember what I ordered last time, but this time around I got the Gnocchi Alla Boscaiola (23), which was a gnocchi with bacon, mushrooms, and shallots in a creamy tomato sauce. I wasn't too impressed with the sauce at first, but the more I had it, the more I actually liked it. They were generous about the bacon and mushrooms, which made up for the mediocre gnocchi...Not there was nothing wrong with the gnocchi, but it was a bit flour-y and not as chewy as I liked. I also had a taste of the Papparadelle Pesto e Pollo (25.5), which was a chicken pesto in a spinach cream sauce. It was decent, but I was satisfied with my choice. Though the pasta was just average for the price, the service was a 5/5 that night - attentive and friendly, just the way it should be! I would say (at least that night) it was one of the better places I've had in Brisbane, service-wise. read more

Well this place is just great. I can never resist the beckoning call of Italian food, and Pane e Vino delivers it in spades. I like it best on a Friday night when the crowd has started to ebb and you can enjoy a piping hot pasta with friends. They offer a really great menu of Italian options. Other Italian restaurants I've been to in the past bely the name because they only serve generic pizza and pasta, but Pane e Vino is different. You've got your insalata, risotto, pasta, pollo, pesce, panini, and focaccia, and they've even thrown in some schnitzel for something totally different. So maybe it's not wholly Italian, but their choices are so fantastic and that's saying something coming from me, who can sometimes be precious about my meal choices depending on my mood. Finishing off your night with a coffee here is the best way to enjoy it. Meals are served quickly and are really delicious, and the coffee is strong and smooth; just how Italian coffee should be. There's also a really dynamic (and at times eccentric) team here to make your dining experience that much more memorable. Yuummmm Italian food! It is seriously the best comfort food around and Pane e Vino know how to make it. I have only eaten here twice over the years but I remember the food being excellent and with service to match it. One thing I constantly fail at making for myself is risotto, my rice always ends up looking like a pile of sludge rather than the gorgeous masterpieces pictures in cookbooks. Thankfully, Pane e Vino know how to make risotto so I don't have to. The prices aren't cheap, but not too expensive either and the dishes are worth the extra dollars in comparison to a cheap eat. The service was very polite both times that I have been there and I thoroughly enjoyed the ambiance. Pane e Vino have taken a rather simplistic approach to their decorating but it all seems to work. I would recommend this restaurant to a friend looking for good Italian food in the Brisbane CBD. read more

Delicious desserts with good coffee. The prices of food are not really affordable to international students though, my friends and I enjoy our special time here. All eight different cakes and tarts I tried were great but my favourite one (caramel one) has unfortunately disappeared from the glass case since last year, I reckon. In this hot and muggy season, their coffee milk shake has to be recommended. It has a good level of sweetness and soothe your thirst. read more

Was looking to get some quick, yummy and hearty Italian food but it didn't really live up to my expectations. Ragu was terrible. The ragu pretty much seemed like they tossed pulled meat together with tomato sauce. The T-bone steak was decent but over cooked. I must say that the potatoes as well as the caper oil based sauce were phenomenal, but the steak was a little overdone (the boyfriend requested for medium). To make matters worst it took an hour before we received our mains and tough luck because it wasn't really worth the wait. read more

Pane e Vino has been one of my favourite restaurants in the CBD for years! A girlfriend and I used to religiously have lunch there every Friday and wander back to our office jobs feeling full and jolly. The food is simple, beautiful Italian fare with a wine list that compliments it perfectly. I try to always have something different when I am there, but I find it hard to go past the gnocchi con gorgonzola which, the the freshly shaved parmesan they put on top, always hits the spot. Pane e Vino is great for an intimate lunch date or a group occasion and has staff who manage to handle the busy lunch periods, but stay polite and informative all the same. It's a great place to spoil yourself if you've been working hard. A little word of warning though- being smack bang in the middle of the public servant district of the CBD it can often be hard, especially on a Friday lunchtime or around 5pm, to get a seat. To avoid disappointment I would definitely book in advance, and if it's a nice day it's worth asking the friendly staff for a seat outside. read more

I walked passed this place for so many years but never drew my attention. When one of my friends organised a lunch at this place and told me the name I could not even recognise the place. I ordered 'scallopne marsala' which set me back $29 plus drinks. It was simply fabulous. The meat was perfectly cooked, the creamy mushroom sauce all over it. I liked it so much that I asked my friends to have another lunch at that place. When we went back I had the same dish and I was not disappointed. Service was always good and very professional. This is probably one of the WORST places I have ever been to for breakfast. We got tempted by seeing $10 big breakfast menu so, thought let's give it a try. After seating us, one server asked us if we needed any drinks, we ordered two coffees and asked for some time to order the breakfast. Another server came in to take the order and we ordered one big breakfast and asked for a minute to decide for another item. Then came the first server and we confirmed with her for two big breakfasts. After waiting for 20 mins came one order and when I inquired about the other order, they said it's coming, which came another 20 mins later. They didn't even apologise for the confusion. Since being back in the city I have been trying different places each day for my morning coffee so I can start developing my routine everyday list. Although this was ok coffee and they serverd a pretty darn nice cheese and ham toastie, I don't think this is going on the everyday list. I know what I love about coffee when I am drinking it, and I know I didn't love my coffee at Pane e Vino. But if I was stuck for options I would go back. Friendly staff. read more

Seafood is my favourite food, the dish had lovely strong flavors but the seafood itself could have been better quality. The mussels where very small in their shell. Came here for my daughters 19th birthday and was very impressed . Warm and friendly welcome, which is always a good way to start , this place is one of the best Italian restaurants I have eaten at for a very, very , long time. The food was fantastic . I had the best seafood marinara I have ever had for a very long time. OMG it even had a lot of seafood in it. My daughter ordered the hot chilli prawn linguini which was also fantastic. I am indeed a fan of Italian food. And so when a friend decided to celebrate her birthday Pane e Vino, I was kinda excited since: - it's Italian; - conveniently placed in the City; and - it was a full 5 years since I last ate at this place and the last time I was here, the pasta that I had was awesomely flavoursome and just left an impression. So, how about my recent re-experience of this place? I can say it's still pretty good. I chose to try something else this time around instead of pasta. Most of my friends did go with some form of pasta and all seemed to have enjoyed it with positive reactions and comments. I went with the pork belly (I actually was looking for lasagne and was disappointed to find they didn't serve it) which also came with some mash potato and slightly pickled red cabbage. For me, there were perhaps a few "issues" with my dish: - While pork belly is meant to be pretty fatty (that is typically the best part, the stuff just under the skin), I do like some meat included. This version was almost 80% fat, 20% meat. - There was no crackling. The skin was kinda chewy... - Pickled cabbage wasn't sour enough to counter the richness of the pork (especially since with this version, the pork was really fatty so needed something to cut through the rich fatty taste). But don't get me wrong, overall it wasn't really a bad dish, it was still edible and satisfying from a volume perspective. And perhaps others may like pork belly done this way. However, for me, it didn't "hit the spot". Nonetheless, this is an Italian restaurant and it seems all the pasta dishes are still pretty good and worth a try. It was probably my mistake for not going with a pasta on my re-experience experience. Oh, and did I mention that the service was both friendly and efficient? Yes, they are all friendly, very helpful and efficient (Chinese restaurants take note - it is possible). read more

We had a guest in town and he requested to come here. I walked pass this place so many times but never really paid attention. It's a small place but clean and nice just like other Italian place. The server is very professional and knowledgeable. I ordered the black mussels dish, I got so excited because I saw a table of three all ordered this dish. It must be good that's why they all ordered it. The portion was huge but it was so salty and no taste what so ever - just salt and tomato sauce. If it were to be just me and my husband, I'm sure this dish will have to go back but we had a guest and this is a place he picked. It's not that cheap nor expensive either for a prime place in CBD. My dish was $26, for three of us and a bottle of red wine, turned out to about $100. There was no bread before the meal. You know what I am talking about, the basket bread and butter. Service was impeccable; staff were friendly and quick, we were seated immediately in a beautiful spot near the window. I cannot stress how wonderful the staff were, even though there wasn't a table empty we felt like we merely had to look around to receive service. We had a table for two, ordered the cheesy ball thingies (forgive me, aranchini?) and the gnocchi, both were delicious, however could have been presented in a more interesting manner. The garlic bread however tasted similar to corner store quality. With two different appetisers, two gnocchi, and two cheap drinks we ended up with a bill just tipping $60. Was it worth it? Yes. Would I return? Yes. What would I rate it? 9.0 (garlic bread/presentation) Anecdotally, our table had a slight wobble, before it became anything of an annoyance out server swiftly placed a card beneath and levelled it out, it's the little things. read more

A longstanding restaurant on the strip of restaurants on Albert St in the city - always seen it, first time visiting. Not a bad experience - nice atmosphere, friendly staff and decent food. Wouldn't say the risotto knocked me out of the park, but it was certainly tasty and around about the right price. read more

The food was good but its definitely overpriced for what you get. I had the rissoto which was delicious but not worth $25. The desserts were standard and I would be surprised if they were made on premises but still tasty. It also suffered from my ultimate restaurant pet peeve, being too loud. Ordered the 450g T-bone steak, half of it was very rare amd other half medium. One edge of the steak was encompassed by a strip of unchewable fat/skin. This was one of the most expensive dish on the menu and def one of the worst I have had. Told the waitperson when they asked and their response was "oh really?", nothing else. read more
