This review is long overdue for our visit back in November of 2024. I was looking up Nduja recipe…read moreand reminded myself this was the place that initiated my love for Nduja sauce. American/Aussie owned bakery brunch spot by the river, such a cute little eatery. We loved our visit and though it's definitely more of a touristy spot, as most customers spoke English, the food was delicious to forgo the tourist trappy vibes. We shared a plate and added some items as we didn't want to get too stuffed on our first day of Florence. We had the Nduja Eggs plate with bacon and avocado added. Nduja is a spicy Calabrian pepper spreadable pork sauce, and oh boy was it so flavorful. If I remembered correctly, Melaleuca spread this sauce on top of a fried bread and eggs. I don't see it on the menu at the moment and it's probably a rotatable dish... but it definitely kicked started my hunt for the sauce. Since this is a spreadable pork, it's not something I could bring back to the US but I was able to find it online back home. The service was amazing and the beverages were delicious. Like many Italian places, the dining room is small and bathroom is a single small room that might require a small wait if they're busy. Didn't get to try their baked goods this last time, but definitely on our list to go back for more when we're back to Florence for a visit.

I was looking for a good patisserie in Florence, and Gilli repeatedly came up. I bookmarked it and…read morekept the place in mind when my trip finally came. I stopped by Gilli for the first time around 9pm on a Sunday night. The place stayed open night, which was very convenient especially since we've been having late dinners. I had the chance to enjoy a sit down in their outdoor patio. It's located right next to a piano bar and other busking performers when there wasn't entertainment at the bar next door. Ordering was interesting. You don't pay at the counter but rather at the corner register for everything to-go. On one of the nights when we grabbed a couple of drinks at Gilli, the server loaded my desserts order on a card that I redeemed to my waiter. Then my desserts were served to me a few moments later. So I had tried ricciarelli at another pasticceria down the street, but Gilli's were far more superior. The almond flavor was more prominent, the texture was much softer, and the powdered sugar wasn't broken. Loved it so much that I got boxes of it for myself and loved ones. I had the pleasure of trying all their "mignons" (mignardises) and was particularly fond of the lemon with pistachios, chocolate passion fruit, and coconut chocolate ones. That said, I always had to have ricciarelli among the little bites.

Being seated right away after our long flights was a big plus. The restaurant has a nice breakfast menu. A few of us chose the scrambled eggs with bacon and bread. Everything was well prepared with nice crispy bacon. I ordered the Caffe Marrochino which was espresso, milk, and cocoa to provide a nice jolt of energy. Breakfast is only a small part of Gilli, the pastries here looked amazing! A fun place to start off our dining experiences in Italy!
