One of the things I love about our Yelp community is the opportunity to make friends with other…read morereally cool people who like to get out and do things. This is how I was able to finally get out to the AIDS Fund monthly gay bingo at the Gershman Y. Fellow Yelp Elite (and a great partner-in-crime) Dee M and I are at another bingo game back in March (Aston library) and realize we both wanted to go. Yay! Gay Bingo is very popular, so much do that if you want a reserved floor seat you're going to be buying 4-6 weeks in advance. The building itself is definitely older - I'd guess 1910-1920s. It's somewhat ornate and well kept up. Bingo is in their auditorium on the third & 4th floors - 4th floor being the balcony seats. For hardcore bingo players: this is not your serious game. It's entertainment with bingo games thrown in. The BVDs - Bingo Verifying Divas- are magnificent. Sassy, funny, dirty in the double -entendre fashion. In other words, awesome drag queens. There's a little bit of singing, dancing, a game show, and time to learn about each game's sponsor, like what the AIDS legal fund does. They have done food & drinks for sake, a 50/50 raffle, drawings, etc. You can also bring your own food & non-alcoholic drinks. Some folks had pretty elaborate meals and more than a couple cakes. This is most definitely a fundraiser with everyone involved working as volunteers- even the BVDs and ASL interpreters. Dee and I had a great time. I'm looking forward to going again during their fall season (they don't run games in the summer). If you love drag queens, want to support a worthy nonprofit and like bingo, you should definitely go!

I first came to Gershman Y for its annual overcrowded yet overly delicious Latkepalooza event which…read morecelebrated the latke and gave several area restaurants and chef the chance to provide their own spin on it (the Indian latkes from Tashan were total win!). while West Philadelphia Orchestra played in the backdrop. But since that time I found out that the Y provides a number of eclectic artistic and cultural events, whether they're predominately Jewish or not. Along with its annual palooza the Y hosts the Philadelphia Jewish Music Festival, and the Philadelphia Jewish Film Festival. But through its many corridors you might come across art displays, interesting lectures, theater productions and more. And when I attended a special screening of Ken Roach's latest, The Angel's Share (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1924394/), I learned that it's where the Philadelphia Film Society hosts a number of their advance screenings.

This same woman has been rude/ unfriendly to me on multiple occasions. I usually never leave the store without spending at least $100. When I told her the crackers I bought yesterday for a dinner party were expired she just looked at me with a fake smile and said she had them recently and that is how they are supposed to taste. I spent three months in Italy and never have I tasted something so stale. I was explaining to her how awful they were and no I would not like another bag. She just kept saying I'm sorry and smiling. No refund, and unwilling to say the customer is right. Will not be returning there.

Another cool experience in Philadelphia. I am loving this city!…read more My husband and I received a gift certificate to Cook as a wedding gift and we didn't realize how quickly the events book up. Holy snikees! You have to literally log on to their website the minute the classes are posted and reserve a spot immediately. We got married in May and have been trying to use our gift certificate ever since. It was worth the wait! Our event was hosted by The Royal Chef (Darren McGrady). He cooked for 5 US Presidents in addition to the Queen of England and her family. Needless to say, he didn't disappoint. Not only was the food he created fantastic, but he was personable and super funny. There were 16 people total (which is the max for the space) and we enjoyed observing Darren and learning new techniques. The wrap-around counter ensures that eveyone has a bird's eye view. We loved every minute of it. Our menu included: - Blueberry, Feta and Kale Salad - Chili and Garlic Crusted Shrimp with Double Cheese Grits - Minute Steaks with Blue Cheese, Caramelized Onions, and Cannellini Bruschetta - Sticky Toffee Pudding with Clotted Cream The staff at Cook is top-notch. Never an empty wine nor water glass, and plates were delivered and cleared with the quickness. It was a casual, social, and fun setting. This is not a hands-on culinary event, rather, this is an event where you sit back, relax, and watch your chef work their magic. You don't have to lift a finger and that's the way I like it! You can purchase kitchen gadgets and goodies at this location at a 15% discount on the day of your event. Cook offers something for everyone. Some of the events are pricey, but there are some that are more budget-friendly. Check it out and be sure to work those quick-typing fingers to reserve a fun class fast!

I wish I had looked at the 1-star reviews before paying money to this company. When I asked for…read moreinformation on their CAPM course, they were quick to respond and to continue to contact me frequently. The sales agent put me in the wrong class and had to fix the date. At this point it was a struggle to get a response. She finally emailed me the correct dates after 3 emails from me requesting it. The virtual classes were dismal. The instructor read the slides verbatim and in a monotone voice. The quiz they added was a joke with 1 answer being obvious it was proj mgmt and the other three being ridiculous choices. The dates for my class approached shortly after my house was hit by Hurricane Milton. I requested a change to the class date because I had damage to my roof, ceiling and flooding on one side of my house. I emailed them and received a response that they were raising a ticket and I would hear from their back office in 24-48 hours, then....crickets. I waited almost a week then emailed constantly trying to get someone to respond. The class was only a week away. I disputed the charge because no one would contact me back. That made them take notice. I was pummeled with people reaching out but no one was documenting what was said in my account so I was getting call after call from overseas. I realize it was confusing since the error was on their part the first time the dates changed but I sent multiple screen prints showing the email dialogue between me and first agent. Either they didn't care to check or they have a bad CRM. After 4 different people contacting me, a new class was set up. I removed dispute once dates were confirmed. I still had hope that the actual class would be better. There was such a high Yelp rating that I had to believe it would have more material than virtual class but it didn't. The instructor was nice but the content lacking. He basically provided links to other sites. There was little instruction. At the end he sent a link to review TKA and requested we mention his name and submit within 30 minutes. I purchased a book and am doing my own training. I've learned more on Google in 2 hours than 3 days with TKA. I hope this saves someone else from spending money with this company.

By no means was it easy, quite the opposite in fact, and it's certainly not for everyone, but it's an incredible place! You really get from it what you give into it....and it requires A LOT!! The staff is wonderful. In fact, a text sent to me the other day by my former teacher 14 years after I graduated prompted me to write this review. Michael Olszewski was my textile minor with an emphasis on print design teacher and was one of my favorite people on earth! He went above and beyond and would come in on his day off just to teach me a method of dying we hadn't learned yet, but one I wanted to try for my childrens' wear collection. He was also there to listen to me talk about life in general when I needed him to. A true gem. Janice Lewis, Linda Wisner and Lori in the fashion department are top notch. At times they became a second mother to me when I needed, but make no mistake, they take no crap. 2 absences, you fail. Done. These ladies will get you where you need to go. Their talent, knowledge of the industry and connections are unreal. They helped me score an internship with Betsey Johnson in New York City. I won awards form Tyvek, Ralph Lauren Accessories, Frank Agostino and Urban Outfitters. They are just a few of the guest designers who judge our collections! While at MCAD I met fellow alum Adrienne Vitadinni and Mark Badgley and James Mischka, Todd Oldham, and Betsey Johnson! Each year I attend their annual fashion show at The Barnes and you would be astonished by the talent! It's open to anyone so, go ahead! I was also given the sweetest intern from MCAD a few years back for my small business. The relationships are everlasting, both personal and professional. I secured a job in my field (besides my internships with Betsey, Chloe' and Motherwork Maternity here in Philly) within a month of graduating. I was a merchandiser for H&M for 6 years before opening my own business while staying at home to raise my daughters. Everyone I graduated with works in their field. Here, in LA or in New York. Have no fear about job placement. If you make it through your first basic year where all students are required take the same classes including 8 hour basic drawing and design classes etc, you're golden and can move on to focus on your major, and even take a minor which I highly recommend especially if they can go hand in hand such as fashion and textile which is what I did, and worked out beautifully. Unfortunately the textile department is no longer there, but you get my point. At MCAD you not only focus on your major and your art based classes, but are required to take general studies with exams and papers too. These classes however are unique such as women in religion, film studies, history of fashion and art history etc. My art history classes with the incomparable Kevin Richards gave me knowledge for life!! It gave me the background to truly appreciate visiting Firenze and the Ufizzi gallery, de Medici family grounds, the duomo in Milano, and The Pieta at the Vatican etc. I don't think I would be able to fully take it all in without the knowledge I had gained in my classes. I even use my design techniques everyday for something as simple as decorating my own home. The buildings are immaculate and kept very safe with security guards and badges for all visitors. Their galleries often host not only student work, but visiting artists as well. You can't get a better, safer, location than Logan Circle. The Barnes, The PMA, even The Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul (where we often took a trips to draw perspective) for inspiration right there. You're right in the middle of it all. Excellent section of the city. I lived in Sartain for my first two year on a picturesque tree lined street across the way and I think that's the way to go. It gave me a taste responsibility without extreme freedom and set me up for living on my own my last two years. It was nice to have access to the studios and have work space on each floor also. I knew Moore was where I belonged. It's the only school I applied to and I personally think it's the best art school in the entire city. My best advice to any potential students would be to take a summer class with Young Artist Workshop and definitely take the business classes. Don't give it being all female a second thought. It was so nice not having a distraction and coming to school in pjs if we wanted. :) The boys at Penn & Drexel weren't that far away and it was really like one big sorority here. I made great girlfriends for life and having graduated from MCAD makes me so proud, and makes us all bonded for life. We all knew what went into that final day. No one else will ever understand. It's like no other.
