So many other burgers I've had in Toronto serve this hot patty on a bun straight out of the fridge. NO! Stop that. Learn from Annex Social. The slaw? TO DIE FOR. Is that lime I taste? Yes. Is that the light, delicate frisee part of the cabbage I'm tasting? Is there mayo here, but not so much that this feels like a mayo-based salad? Yes. Beers, check, aperol spritzes, check, wine, check, they've got the standard bevs, this is a bar after all. From the bakery counter, we tried a slice of Patate e Gorgonzola pizza (fingerling potatoes, gorgonzola, mozzarella, red onion, rosemary) and a sundried tomato foccacia - both were incredible. Lovely toppings, beautifully soft, pillowy and chewy, wonderful taste and aromas from the olive oil and nice crunchy edges on the pizza The prices were on point for these lovely items ($7.50 for a hefty square of pizza. I don't remember how much the foccacia was, but whatever it was, it was worth it.) From the grocery, we took home some in-house gnocchi and their homemade tomato/basil sauce, plus fennel sausages. The sausages were top-notch, but the pasta and sauce were just so-so. The gnocchi felt too light in the mouth/on the fork, didn't come out with the right texture, and the sauce, though fresh tasting, felt somehow commercial and, dare I say, boring (at $8 a jar). I'm looking forward to trying more here and having a bite on-site. The cafe is gorgeous and new and everything is presented beautifully. There are a lot of unique wines, amaro and grappa for sale here, too, so worth a trip if you're looking for something special for your Italian dinner.
