Toronto Review 15/Many. This was unfortunately my last meal in Toronto, aside from a small snack to wash the taste out of my mouth on the way back to the hotel. We were originally going to go to Pai, but since there was a line out the door because we didn't make a reservation, we ate here. The interior was fun, with the original owner's face on many different things, and there was a loud-ish mix of rock and early heavy metal. Apparently, this spot is a chain, and they used to have some US locations, but I'm not surprised they closed. We got some Cauliflower Bites for 5.49 CAD to begin. These were decent and, unlike our poutine choices, not overly salty. The little bits of fried cauliflower could have used a bit more flavor, but they worked for texture, and both of us eventually added some pieces to our poutines. My poutine of choice was the Prime Beef Deluxe, with ground beef, mushrooms, caramelized onions, and green peas, for 13.99 CAD. As a whole, the poutine was rather nasty, with the whole thing feeling wet. The watery gravy lacked flavor compared to the couple of other examples I've had before. The fries, even though they were hot and looked crispy, were limp and potatoey, and they were getting limper by the second because of the bad gravy. The cheese curds were decent, but there weren't that many of them. The beef didn't help how wet the dish was, nor did the frozen peas, with the only decent parts being the caramelized onions and mushrooms. I had maybe 60/70% of it, leaving many very wet fries at the end. The other person had the Buffalo grilled chicken with grilled chicken, buffalo sauce, creamy ranch dressing, and green onions, which was a dollar more. From the little bit I tried, the chicken was certainly better quality, though still a bit gummy. The buffalo sauce had a little bit of heat. The whole thing was extremely overdressed with the sauce, dressing, and gravy, and he had maybe half of it at most. This meal was terrible. They were both a salty mess with bad fries and worse gravy. I've had better poutine in NYC, and there are barely any Canadian spots here. Go here if you're high or drunk and therefore lack proper taste buds. read more

I came to Smokes to try some of their poutine. I've had plenty of poutine in my life and really enjoy eating this dish. And when in Rome, you have to obviously try Poutine. The guy at the counter had a smile and was very friendly. We came here for lunch and we each got our own. I want to say we got the medium size poutine and it was definitely too much for each to finish on our own. We should have shared or gotten the smaller version. I ordered their pulled pork, my son ordered their jerk chicken, and my wife ordered one with bacon. They were all ok but extremely salty. I love pulled pork? But prefer it to be served with no sauce. This stuff was drenched in sauce to it takes away from the pulled pork. My son's jerk chicken was also very wet and would have preferred it to be served with chicken only with the jerk spices, but should be served wet. Way too salty and I'm not sure I'd return on my next visit. read more

Ok so I was in town for work had a group dinner but after had the hankering for some poutine fries and this was the nearest thing open that's close to where I was... the service was quick fast and no frills to the point... wish I had ordered a large poutine fries lol I finished that thing... for first experience of poutine fries in Canada where it's originated and not have some faked stuff back home this was awesome... it was a shorts wait and the fries were not mushy... not sure how they did it because it was drenched with gravy and topped with poutine cheese chunks... soooo good . Person behind the counter take our order was friendly do fast food and got us what we needed and was respectful. All my kids want is just poutine. We have no decent one in Chicago. So this place is like our staple place every time we go to Canada. I honestly like the poutine. I do, however, wish that the fries are slightly crisper because the gravy makes it slightly soggy if it's not crispy. Every time we're in Canada, we always get the bacon cheeseburger and the popcorn chicken poutines. I'm writing this review today because the guy who is working at the place is super nice. He gave my kids stickers, which other locations don't even care about. The only thing about this place is the parking. Parking is seriously hard. I went here on a Friday at 11:43am for breakfast before heading on my Zoom tour towards Niagara Falls. I mainly just wanted to try some good poutine and eat a quick meal before doing my activities that day. Anyways, there was no wait at the time I arrived and all the tables inside were still empty. I got the Avalanche poutine which is basically a poutine with chipotle pulled pork, grilled chicken, double-smoked bacon, and creamy ranch dressing, and cheese curds. They put a lot of toppings on their poutine here and I was happy about that, but I wish the fries were a bit crispier. I'd recommend this place! This restaurant has a lot of cute wall decorations. The poutine here is good and service is quick! They also make your poutine once you're order it, so you know it's fresh! I do wish the fries were more crispy though. read more

Ordered food on their website for pickup. The one employee working there said he never got the order. I showed him the receipt from my email and from the website. He still denied any order. He did not attempt to rectify the situation other than telling us we shouldn't order online and that I needed to place another order in person. I used to love this place but feel that they have taken a step down in quality as of recent. The gravy was watery and definitely weak on the number of cheese curds in my poutine. On the positive - I will say they didn't skimp on the bacon. There was a heaping pile on top and it was fresh and enjoyable. Do enjoy the classic rock buzzing in the dining room as well. read more

We ordered the prime Angus beef fries and pulled pork fries. The food came out in under 3 minutes, which is an immediate red flag. As expected, the fries were cold and clearly not fresh...tasted like they'd been sitting for hours. At $24 per dish, the least you can do is have the decency to make fresh fries. Respectfully, I'd rather go to Nathan Phillips Square and get fresh fries for $5 that are made properly and taste far better. I got a small size traditional poutine with bacon on it. The regular sizes were quite big for one person and I wish they had something smaller or a kids size. Also the traditional poutine might look cheap but the add-ons are quite expensive and I don't think it would have tasted as good without it. It's really good, but I think you should just stick to what you know is going to be good. The curry one tasted like boxed curry, and it was not good... Also don't get the Korean one... That wasn't great either... But other than that, the fries are good and the general gravy is good. Smoke's is just a classic institution and pretty much a must visit if you're in Toronto craving some poutine. Not only do they have the largest variety ever (have you seen their menu? it's like eating at Denny's!), but they are open very late, and satisfy those after drink cravings! The portions are enormous, the staff is friendly, and the gravy is very salty. I recommend letting it sit a few extra minutes because you really need the curds to melt a little more, but other than that it was tasty and delicious as late night food goes. read more

The cheese itself was nearly negligible and the gravy was room temperature at most so only enough to make the fries soft, not to melt the curds in any way. Since we were visiting during a holiday weekend, Smoke's was one of the few spots opened that focused on poutine. Us Americans are always down for a good poutine and I thought this place was decent, but not amazing. The overall decor of the restaurant was interesting with its diner style seating and interesting designs n the walls. You order at the counter and are given a number they'll call to pick up your box of fries. We ordered three types to share with two being pretty good and the last being a complete miss for us: - Traditional Poutine - You really can't mess up the classic can you? Gravy on top was good but the cheese curds melted way too quickly into the rest of the box. Still, it was a good classic poutine for us. - Korean Beef Poutine - We love KBBQ and this one sort of hits it there with the flavors. There wasn't a whole lot of meat in our poutine to compliment the gravy and cheese. - Butter Chicken Poutine - PASS. The chicken tasted like it came out of a Subway restaurant and there was nothing "buttery" about our entire dish. It sounded good on paper but ended up being quite disappointing. Ordered the Jerk chicken poutine and was tricked into ordering a large which came out to $25 CAD. Their slogan was clogging arteries since 2008 has me thinking that it better be good to sacrifice blood flow. The fries were crispy, the curds were squishy as advertised. The worker behind the counter was nice enough, although he declined to provide water cups or extra side plates/containers of any kind for our group of 6 that shared two large orders. We were all pretty put off by that. But the poutine was good and the restaurant inside was clean. I probably shouldn't have came here to have the first official poutine of my Toronto trip. I was hoping to get poutine that would blow me out of the water, but I found that I didn't get that from Smoke's Poutinerie. I didn't realize that it was a fast food chain though, so it was my bad for setting too high of an expectation. The good thing is that it can only get better from here. I went to Smoke's Poutinerie as it was the closest walking distance from the CN Tower. When I arrived, there was only 1 person eating inside and the place reminded me of a Popeye's chicken. The customer services was excellent. The server/cashier was particularly awesome. Not only did it take me a while to hone in on what I wanted (I ended up with the traditional anyway), but I was also having issues with my credit card getting read in their system. The server was super patient with me through the whole transaction. What I thought was cool about Smoke's Poutinerie was the expansiveness of the menu. It looked like you could top the poutine with anything and everything - bacon, chicken, beef, etc. You can also order extra curds or protein. The traditional one I got was pretty basic, of course. Nothing really special about the gravy or curds. Smoke's Poutinerie needed better quality fries. The fries were totally soggy as I ate through the meal. read more

I'm no expert on poutine so this is just my opinion. Because of the gravy the fries were very soggy. Not very fond of soggy fries. The curds were just lumps on top of the fries. I would have preferred the curds more melted on the fries. The philly steak was very good and tasted like Philly steak. Lots of different types. At first I thought it was a bit expensive until I picked up the box. It is very packed. You get a lot for the money. I think it is a good place to try poutine for the first time. read more
