I have been coming to PANYC since 2018 so this review is a long time coming. Billy is a wonderful hair stylist. He manages to leave my hair vibrant and soft. I was prompted to write this review because I am truly in awe of his talent. For years I was getting vibrant red highlights but recent decided to go blonde for the month. He took his time, did a spot test to see how much color he could lift with minimal damage and the result was wonderful. He helped me get the sunkissed blonde I was hoping for! Cut was a boxy mess - expected better results given the reviews and stylist profile - stylist was Cristal who said she worked and taught at Bumble & Bumble but she cut more like she worked at Supercuts, really amateur. I see now the reviews are fake. Blowout was absolutely horrible and the she used a tiny travel flat iron on my thick coarse hair. Stylist obviously had no idea how to deal with my hair type even though she told me she could. Also, when a stylist has to keep asking you how to proceed with a cut, know you're in trouble! Service was not worth $135 plus tax. Have to get hair done again. Waste of time and money. Really upset with the outcome. read more

I love this place. Happened to spot it on my walk home from dinner and saw how great the reviews are and took a chance. I'm so glad I did! Billy Ray is AMAZING with color (i do both highlights and fashion color), and Sindy who usually helps with my color is also the best. They take such care and are also so fun to hang out with which is a bonus! The salon has a fun and homey atmosphere and they really care about COVID protocols and making the clients happy in general. I'd been in a bit of a rut with my hair, and Crystal and the fine folks at Panyc Salon definitely helped! The salon is relaxing, airy and nicely lit. The receptionist, assistants, owner and other stylists were friendly, welcoming and - without being intrusive - were interested in what we were doing, which happened to be heavy blonde highlights with a deep teal accent color that I'm loving. I'm a singer and like my hair to be at least mildly interesting/have some stage appeal. I went though some stress or hormone-related hair loss in my late 30's which sucks because I like to part my hair in the middle. As you can see, Crystal's highlights helped a lot with that. Versatility is everything, and she also cut my fine but very curly hair in a way that allows me to style it parted in the middle or to the left or right side. Very happy and highly recommend! The hairdressers at this unassuming Chelsea salon are incredibly talented and eager to please their clients. They also take COVID protocols and safety super seriously. This was the best hair color/cut I have ever had! I somehow got a last minute appointment when I was in NYC for a long weekend last fall and I was so impressed. MaryLou did my blonde highlights perfect and JC did a trim that actually made my hairstyle look amazing. The atmosphere was fun yet professional and the whole team was just a blast and clearly so talented. For NYC, the price is incredibly reasonable for the quality of work. I usually have to get my highlights redone every 8 weeks but these lasted me over 12 weeks because they grew out so naturally and still somehow looked amazing well into the 10th week! My only regret is that I don't live in NYC or travel there often to get my hair done every time by MaryLou and JC. They are artists and insanely talented! Their Texas roots shines through in their sweet and fun personalities and I also learned a thing or two about tequila which was an added bonus! I only hope to return some day! read more

I highly recommend getting a haircut from Simon. He was so friendly and personable and gave me honest recommendations for how to fix my hair. Honestly my hair was a mess, completely knotted up and split ends all over. He transformed it without sacrificing too much of the length and asked me how I was feeling about it the entire time. PANIC is definitely what you should do if you come to this place. My experience was terrible. I came here a couple years ago and got my hair colored by Billy Ray. I initially did not write a review because I was so upset that I did not even want to relive the experience by writing it all down; however I came across a review that was upsetting to me because I had a very similar experience with Billy Ray and it's only right that people know what they are getting themselves into. I have natural long black hair. I wanted to lighten it into a medium brown color. I brought photos and we even did a simple strand test to get an idea of color. According to Billy Ray my hair would need color correction bc I used henna a LONG time ago. Apparently it never fully leaves your hair. So for $200 I agreed. So he began by bleaching my hair. Long story short, after he bleached all of my hair he applied a toner that basically made my hair so dark brown that it almost looked black. Not to mention the color was uneven all over. You could see light spots and dark spots all over. Let me remind you he said I needed COLOR CORRECTION. The toner also got on my forehead and stained the hairline & burned my skin. I was furious at how dark my hair was! What was the point of damaging and bleaching out my hair for it to just be DARK again. I couldn't even discuss this problem with Billy Ray because he was too busy chatting and laughing with another client on the other side of the salon. Maybe if he payed more attention to me the toner would not have completely darkened my hair. His assistant was trying to brush my hair and kept ripping my hair with the brush. I finally told her to just stop! The worst part is I was visibly upset & just felt ignored by everyone there. I even tried a silly attempt at trying to blowdry and brush my own hair because Billy Ray was with another client and I was just sitting there so angry at the outcome. At that point I just paid & left. Frizzy hair & all! I called to speak with the manager about my experience & was surprised to find out she was the woman working there who clearly saw how upset I was but said nothing at all while I was there. She just asked oblivious the whole time. Mistakes are bound to happen here and there, but the problem with panyc is they offer no solutions or reconciliation. Not even one simple apology. All they suggest is another treatment which of course would still need to be paid for. I was fooled by all the good reviews. I would never step foot in this place again and would highly not recommend Billy Ray to anyone. read more

This place is a mess. I'm sure there's a chance you'll get a good cut but house odds are against you. It's expensive and inconsistent. It is funky and fun. The stylists fight over the ipod sound system. There's a toy dog running around. The entrance is easty-to-miss and crappy, up an elevator, into a loft-like salon. All of this reeks "hipster." But at the end of the day, if you can't deliver in the haircutting department, open a saloon instead of a salon. I gave it two shots because it's close to where I live. Two strikes at $100 a pop and you're out. Not even sure I'll miss the dog. read more

I've gotten my hair cut twice here with Jeff. Jeff is great, but I do not think I will be returning. It's not you Jeff, it's the salon (and the receptionist dude). First, you have to be buzzed up to get into the building. I'm alright with the buzzing, except I think they want an explanation as to why I'm buzzing. Umm I have an appointment? (sarcasm is not my best trait) Once you step off the elevator, you're in the salon. And it's loud. Incredibly loud. The receptionist dude looks at you with a strange, "what are you doing here" look. When I tell him I'm here to see Jeff, he gives me a puzzled look. I swear this guy is working while high on something. Once Jeff emerges, the magic begins. He asks you what you want to do (with your hair), and he'll give you his suggestions. Jeff can give a mean haircut. I'm rather low-maintenance, but his layers are always clean and grows out beautifully. However, the music is too loud for you to have an actual conversation. When you're paying, you have to deal with the allegedly stoned receptionist. He's not the best communicator. I would love for you to tell me how much the haircut is and not give me a puzzled look why there isn't a monetary transaction. Now I think about it, I might continue to go for Jeff's cuts. I have been dyyyyyying for a haircut for about a month and after asking around and doing research on yelp I made an appointment at PANYC. I called up and asked for a Junior Stylist (since I am poor) which runs at $65 for a cut plus tip. Since this is Manhattan, it seemed like a decent price to me. It is really hard to find the place since its address is obscured by scaffolding. You have to get buzzed in and go through a crappy foyer that smells a bit like urine, but once you get upstairs to the salon everything is lovely. The salon is nice and stylish and the people all were friendly. it's not snobby but it is still cool. Simon was my stylist and he was great. You can tell that he is really passionate about hair and really knows what he is doing. He was very sweet and I liked that he was very cool and pleasant but not a total chatterbox that made awkward small talk. He really looked like an artist at work when he was cutting my hair, which kept me quite amused. Plus, he actually listened to what I wanted! All in all, this is a good, reasonable place to get your hair cut. PS - Bring cash for tip. You can pay for the service with a card, but not the tip. read more

Solid haircut, even a month later. I found panyc via yelp! Hooray! I got a wash, trim and style for a decent prize - 65ish. Apparently, my next haircut will be $10 cheaper. This is enough to make me come, I'm easy to bribe. The salon is classy. It's on the 5th floor, so you do get to ring a bell, shout "Haircut!" at the buzzer and ride up... The Tiniest Elevator in NYC. Kind of like the dirtiest toilet in Scotland - only this elevator is neat and clean and lacking in Ewan McGregor. read more

Writing this review makes me really upset because I came in to Panyc really looking forward to having a fresh look for the summer and eventually left with lackluster hair that i'm completely unhappy with especially because i spent a lot of money on it. Came in to get highlights on my hair which I already had some highlights on. I made sure to explain that I wanted the tips to be lighter than the roots, resembling ombre. I had 2 pictures that I showed the hair stylist. After the hair coloring was done the hair ended up being more or less one color with very little contrast and dimension. Nothing like the picture i showed or what i asked for. Then, on top of that, the toner that was applied to the highlight became very brassy over the course of two weeks giving the highlights a orangy look. The hairstylist eventually had me return to fix the brass after i contacted him (which was great customer service) but ended up adding a dark toner to my entire hair completely negating the $300 i paid to have the hair highlighted in the first place. Worse of all was the fact that he also added the dark toner to my blonde tips making them darker than what I had initially even walked into the salon with. When i explained my frustration I was told that I had to pay for another half highlights to get my tips blonder. However the reason why the tips became darker to begin with was because of the toner he applied!!! I walked in with blonde tips!! I left with my tips darker because of the toner yet I have to pay for more highlights?? I have to pay to fix the mistake. I have never experienced this and i've been coloring my hair for 10 years. I was really disappointed at the level of customer service at that point and was completely fed up. i hate my hair and now i have to save money in order to go somewhere else to have it fixed. I called on a Wednesday and was able to get an appt as soon as Saturday. Already I was thrilled. $65 for senior stylist Sonia--not shabby at all. Definitely affordable-plus blow out! Sonia consulted with me for a good half hour about my new haircut. She explained certain aspects of my hair--its texture, previous cut, why my part falls the way it does--that were very interesting to know. After shampooing me personally, Sonia came back and started to work her magic. She gave me a really awesome fun but I can also go to work without everyone thinking I still like to party like a college student cut. Sonia's sense of humor will also send you back to Panyc. I've been to Frederick Fekkai's training night (back when he used to show up) and he put me in the "Advanced stylist, Pathetic Hair Group" along with a girl with a mullet and a girl with a mohawk. Since then I've been a hair salon vagrant wandering from the West Village to the East Village to Tribeca and back. I have now found my hair salon. Panyc is cool and laid back... but more importantly Chris gave me a precise, easy-to-style, modern looking cut for far less than I've been paying elsewhere. Easily the best cut I've had in the city. I have thick, wavy, long hair and 95% of hair stylist who have touched my hair have difficulties working with it. Thought I would never meet anyone who can work magic with my hair until JC. Hands down, JC is the BEST!!!! And for all you ladies who like to feel like the girls in those Pantene or Herbal Essence commercials where they walk out of a salon and feel fabulous while flipping their hair, well let me tell you...this is exactly how I feel once i'm done when I step foot out of their shop. I laugh because NO ONE has ever made me feel like a brand new person after a freakin' haircut! I even get comments from macho men (i.e. butchers, delivery men) on the street complimenting my hair. Now that says something!!! Oh, and JC does the BEST blow dry. Ask any of the ladies that have gone to him...amazing they'd tell ya!!! I stumbled upon this fantastic place when I lived on 15th street last summer. My natural hair color is more of a blonde color but I had it dyed dark brown-professionally, no less-a few years ago. I used to have it redyed all the time; the color would not stick (or my colorist was not very good?) and there was no integration of the lighter color that it would become over a few weeks and the darker colors that still exsisted. My haircut was alright but kind-of flat; I thought it was due to the fact that my hair is baby, baby fine and straighter than someone who has their hair chemically straigtened. Alas, I was wrong on all fronts. I walked in and made an appointment for the following weekend for a color and a cut. Mary Lou was going to be doing my color and there on the spot she checked my hair out so she would know how much corrective work she had in store. When I returned for the appt, she discussed my color and what I expected and wanted, as well as her recommendations and which parts of my hair was healthy, or not, and what was best for my hair. I was slightly apprehensive to trust someone who I had just met. A few hours later, I was getting my hair cut by Chris and Mary Lou had suggested that I cut quite a bit off my hair (all those dead bits, you know). Again, slight apprehension but I went along. Chris blew my hair dry and then cut it (fine, fine, fine..straight, stra...well you get the idea). Three hours after I had set foot in the salon, I looked in the mirror. I was schocked. My hair had never, ever looked better. EVER. The color was so unbelievably gorgeous, and it grew out so nicely that I did not need to have it colored again until December. Did I mention my appt had been in mid-July (that's right girls-5 months later)? My cut grew out so beautifully as well. I have ad my hair colored and cut there ever since and each time, my hair looks better and better. I just had it colored in May and went a bit lighter, closer to my natural color. It has continued to lighten (as I had said I would like it to do) and looks as if I colored it last week. People ask me every other week-"Did you just get your hair done? It looks so pretty!". I cannot say enough good things about the quality-except for thr fact that for what you are getting, the price is great for NYC. The space is small (they had to move from the LES) but cute and intimate. On some days, a little dog named Peanut can be found there, trotting around and sleeping in her little bed. The music is fun (one day Madonna, another Stevie Nicks) and the stylists and colorists talk as though everyone knows each other. It is a great place with exceptional hairdressers who will make you look better than you thought you ever could. Without the overpricing and attitudes and snottiness that you encounter at so many ny salons. I am added a PS because I recently visited the salon before a vacation of mine. My usual hairdresser-Chris-was not available on the day that I was going to get my hair colored so I was booked with Paul instead. I had always thought my hair looked great after Chris cut it in the past but I think I am going to stick with Paul. My haircut was amazing. Ok so here's what you need to know. First I am about as rational as a 5 year old child when it comes to my hair. I NEVER want to cut it or fuss with it. In fact, there are plenty of days when I find that I actually have mats that resemble dread locks in the back of my head at the bottom. Ok, that's a little embarrassing but it needs to be said. I only brush it occasionally and it usually looks long and a little ragged which can come off as a little charming - which I like. So, I realized that I need a hair color treatment for the summer just to liven things up and I heard about this place Panyc (cute, paNYC) Uh, it took me a while to get it. Anyway, I get there after calling for directions while standing right outside the entrance (it IS hard to spot, but the receptionist was more than patient) and I sit in the chair musing at how my moderately ragged hair looks DRAMATICALLY more ragged when compared with all the perfectly styled heads of hair in the place. But, I still maintain my resistance to cut my hair... I'm just here for color. I was a little nervous when the stylist walked up but I have one word for you: SONIA If you come here ask for her. She comes trotting up with blown out feathery blond short hair a huge smile and she starts examining my treacherous locks with a look of intention. She charms me right from the start, but the real achievement was my hair (I'm easily charmed... it's a curse). ;) She immediately sees that a good 4 inches of my hair is basically dead and I REFUSE to let her cut it. This is huge. For a hair stylist to actually listen to me and NOT cut off my dead ends is really remarkable and I'm sure it was very difficult for her as a professional. Plus, I wanted color which means that she had to work veritable magic to get the color even from the healthy roots all the way down to the dried out ends. She did it like it was nothing! Truly amazing. I left with rich amazing golden brown for the summer (think coffee with soy milk that has been swirled with caramel and sprinkled with golden powder... yeah, delicious). And I even got a few really good tips for tying to maintain my hair the way it is. She was patient with my neurosis and anxiety about my hair and I felt completely comfortable and confident. She listened and used her knowledge to work with me and have me leave looking amazing. I even got bonus tips for my skin care - no joke! My skin looks amazing too. I am so happy I found this place, and Pauline! I have been searching for YEARS for a salon to call home. I have blonde hair and it is really hard to find a colorist to do it the way I want and keep it looking natural. I had found a stylist that was okay (I always left felling like - It's ...good enough), but she relocated I decided it was time to try something different. Despite a little apprehension to try someone new, I searched on yelp and found rave reviews for Panyc and particularly Pauline. I decide to go all out and do a cut and color, since I hadn't cut my hair in a while. Not only was Pauline extremely sweet and patient with me but I LOVE, LOVE my color AND cut! She did exactly what I asked and totally understood what I wanted. Even though it ran a little past closing, Pauline didn't rush me out and made sure I was happy with everything. I didn't feel like they were just waiting for me to leave. (I left feeling like - I loooove it!!) I told her how happy I was to find her(and we definitely hugged). I came in needing some serious help, my hair was really a billion different shades of yellow, orange and brown. I'm aiming to go platinum, but I needed help evening everything out while maintaining the integrity of my hair. I had a wonderful time here, and the service was more than amazing. Billy and Sindy are the two color geniuses who fixed my hair completely. They took their time working on it, and really had a game plan. I've never had an experience where people cared so much about the service they were providing. They took their time, listened to my concerns and made me feel as comfortable as possible. I was there for almost 6 hours, but I didn't even notice because they were so funny and the salon had a great, funny vibe. My hair now looks phenomenal. They got me to a beautiful almost white shade, and I have zero traces of brass, or unwanted tones.
