Nadja is SO talented. I've been seeing her for my color for a few years now. Everyone at Hollywood salon is amazing. They pay attention to detail and make sure to get your color exactly as you want it. They don't rush. I had not seen Nadja in over a year. I had moved away from my old neighborhood and took a break from color overall. However, my old color faded and my hair had not been cut in 11 months. It was damaged and needed some serious repair. I was also looking to go back to blonde balayage that Nadja had done before. Nadja was careful with my hair and cut only what was needed to make it healthy for bleach. She then got my color perfectly!! Removed the brass and orange tones from months of sun and damage. I walked out with a whole new look and healthy hair. I was traveling to Chelsea, NY for work and was suddenly inspired to change things up with a new look. Search for a nice hair salon to get some cute bangs, only to find out holy crap, NYC is expensive! As luck would have it though, I found this gem on Yelp. After my work-day drew to a close, I called them about an hour before closing asking if they had room to squeeze me in in 40 minutes to get bangs. They said not a problem! So I started to walk over, which was supposed to be about a 35 minute walk. Turns out I got there 10 minutes before closing because it was hot as Satan's bumhole that day and I ended up walking way slower than I thought I would. When they realized I was going to get my hair trimmed on top of bangs though, instead of turning me away, they proceeded to wash my hair, and then give me a haircut. I ended up staying 45 minutes past closing, for which I'm terribly sorry, but thank you for the amazing cut. On top of it all, they have extremely reasonable prices (even cheaper than back home in California). Bangs and a trim came out to be $25. I was half expecting it to be $60+ (which is still cheaper than all the other salons I Yelped in the area), so was definitely surprised and paid them that amount anyway, because they're awesome. I left the salon feeling so happy, I really needed a little pick-me-up that day, and Hollywood Salon more than delivered. I plan on getting all my hair-cuts here whenever I come to NYC to visit on business! read more

I came to the salon and she asked what I wanted to do, I told her I wanna get my hair trim, after that another customer came in and standing behind me she said hi to her and turned into me asking if I had appointment, I said no but the girl behind me said yes. She just ignored me and only talked to that girl. I feel really bad if she only required appointment only, she should have told me and talked to me or whatever because I came first. read more

I don't usually write many reviews but I have had such a good experience with Hollywood salon and they don't have many recent reviews that I wanted to spread the word. I have been coming here for 4 years to get a haircut and blowout and have always been very happy with the results. What is amazing is the price-which is pretty hard to get in Manhattan! I usually make an appointment but have been able to do walk-ins as well. Recently, during a haircut I mentioned getting my hair colored, and Nadia was so helpful and telling me what would look good that I made an appointment for the next week for a balayage. I will admit that I was a bit anxious as I had never gotten my hair colored before and I didn't see many pictures or reviews here. I also have fine black Asian hair! However, Nadia was amazing- I showed her a picture of how I wanted my hair to look and she was very confident she could do it. I am very happy with the end result! My example picture had more subtle dark brown highlights, but my hair ended up with a slightly lighter brown which I actually like better as there is more contrast with my black hair. In the pictures it looks a bit blonde but that is only due to the lighting. They gave me a blowout and I love the curls! All in all it took about 2.5 hours and cost $175 which is a GREAT price for nyc. I would definitely come back! Thanks! read more

This used to be my go to salon. I had an awful experience because they hired a new stylist who doesn't know how to blow my hair ( i have naturally curly hair so it needs a flatiron after the blowout to maintain the straightness). Literally the second I stepped outside after my blowout with her my hair was a FRIZZ puff. So for my next appointment I requested Marta or Anastasia. I spoke with the owner who is always polite. Upon arriving, I noticed the owner was not there and that same abysmal stylist was. I washed my hair with their assistant and was placed in the abysmal stylists seat. I immediately looked at Marta and shes like I'm busy and took another client! Anastasia wouldn't even look at me and the stylist who sits next to the front door was like I can't do you either and SHE HAD NO CLIENTS. The abysmal stylist asked me what was wrong why didn't I want her to do my hair. Sitting their with my hair wet I felt SO uncomfortable. I tried to brush it off but she kept insisting I tell her. I told her my issue and she took it personal while STILL BRUSHING MY HAIR. Marta and Anastasia spoke in Russian and just looked at me but didn't even bother to come help her (usually when the owner is there they double team and 2 people blow out my hair so it saves time) I felt so alone. I have been coming here for two and a half years and always had excellent service with the owner. It was a real let down because I love their $26 deal. But i definitely wasn't a priority and for that they lose my business. Go somewhere else if you want to feel valued. Or only go there when the owner is there because everyone is on their best behavior. read more

The worst experience of my life. The hair wash was so rough like someone's washing a horse. Repeatedly pulling and splashing, my head was sore after. The blow out was done in huge sections instead of inch one, repeatedly burning my hair over and over. My hair is fried and smells burnt. The smoke blew out the whole time. I asked for a wavy volume blow dry and got a regular curls. The bang trim was the worst I've ever seen. Looked like Germany 1900's. They had a super good special but I fell in the trap. This is a story about ombre. One Friday back in late September, I wanted to get it done, in the style of Rashida Jones (http://aminamichele.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/rashidajones-hollywoodringer.com_.jpg) or Alexa Chung (http://www.voodou.co.uk/files/2011/02/Alexa-Chung-Ombre-hair.jpg). I didn't care that I was about a year and a half late to this strange trend of paying well over a hundred bucks at a salon to simulate a look that happens if you bleach your hair, surf all summer, and then let your roots grow out past the point of looking like you just need to redo your roots. And I wanted to get it done that day. There were so many obstacles to achieving this goal, chiefly: (a) The fact that I still had very short hair with already damaged tips. (b) I am an Asian American with black hair, which loves to turn brassy in response to any coloring chemicals. (c) This is New York City, where you can rarely find a walk-in or same day appointment at any salon worth its salt. (d) The window of time that I was able to visit a salon was pretty small; 3 hours between the time that I got out of work and the time that I would drive up to New England with my boyfriend for the weekend. I already knew what I was dealing with, but when I called another salon that I value for their unmatched hair cutting precision, they interrogated me for about twenty minutes while I cringed, whispering, at my work desk, then told me that a pre-interview appointment was required, after which maybe they'd be able to approve my hair for the process, which would likely be a multiple procedure (with cumulative costs) in order to do it right. This might be the way to go for celebrities, but for little old me, sometimes you just want to say fuckit, just do it, and who cares about the damage because hair grows! Of course, I also didn't want to blindly walk in somewhere and get my hair botched up when I could do that for a fifteenth of the price out of a box from the nearest Duane Reade. After much angsting and little to go on other than solid Yelp reviews and the website (http://hollywoodsalon-nyc.com/), I called up Hollywood Salon and made an appointment with the man who answered. Thanks to the far eastern 2nd Avenue location, I was a bit late and had to wait much, much longer to get shampooed then seated, but I figured this was my fault. The stylist seemed uncertain about the process (or about my hair in general), but I fought against my hair trigger reaction to run for the hills and let her paint the elixir on my tips and wrap them in foil. I looked like Medusa, and felt like Medusa when they put me under one of those heated drying helmets. At one point I felt like my brain was literally cooking, so they gave me a break, but then shoved me back under there for what felt like forever, saying that heat was a necessary part of activating the chemicals. Knowing this was true, I endured. The worst part was when the stylist unwrapped one foil packet and showed my hair to another stylist. They seemed worried and spoke in another language for a while. Eyes darting, I shrieked, "What's wrong??" and they were like "No, no, nothing." I started feeling sick, then angry, then stupid, then sad, then stupid, then angry... But the end of this story is that when my hair was unwrapped, rinsed, then blown out and I dared to open my eyes...I was met with perfection. I got lucky with this one, folks, so let me spare everyone the gamble and say that if you want to try ombre (especially not coward's ombre, which is too subtle to even show), then this is a suitable place to do it in one shot on the day that you decide to do it...even if you have black roots and chlorine fried tips...for $130 and change. Thanks, Hollywood! After a few months and a lot of growing out, I still feel like a million bucks! read more

this review is about me and my friend, but i am including pics only of myself (all in natural lighting): pic 1- model pic 2- before pic 3- after the 1st appt pic 4- after the 2nd appt i was so eager to return to this place after a flawless experience 9 months ago, this time with my friend to whom i had raved about it. little did we know that we were in for a hair nightmare. we came in wanting a bit of a lift (caramel balayage for me, honey/blonde ombre for my friend), and provided pictures for reference (pic #1). but 3 hours later, a quick blowout revealed pretty much unchanged hair that looked very far from what we requested. our colorists explained that we simply needed a few washes to counter the cooling effects of the toner, and that in a week or so our hair should have warmed up. we were skeptical because it seemed to be more so a problem of light/dark rather than of temperature, but we paid our $217 each and resolved to give it some time. fast forward 2 weeks, and our hair had NOT budged (pic #3). we called and explained the situation, and luckily they agreed to fix it free of charge. but let's just say we were wrong when we thought things couldn't get any worse. APPARENTLY the next shade up from dark brown is straight blonde, because that's what i ended up with (pic #4). i vocalized my concern, but was dismissively responded to with: "trust me, this will look better on you." UM, WHAT?! i don't doubt that hairstylists have a good knowledge of colors and undertones, but 1) wouldn't this have been more appropriate to say beforehand? and 2) err, i didn't really ask.......... as for my friend, OH BOY. a sunflower yellow with the harshest line of demarcation i had ever seen!! as if everyone's eyes in the room weren't already on the commotion, the lady drew more attention to the scene by scolding her: "oh so before it's too dark, NOW you complain it's too light???" thank god 2 other people fixed her up (if you saw it, you'd know that there was no other option), and even began arguing with the previous girl about what she did wrong. it's scary to know that they entrust workers who aren't fully aware of the procedure. ultimately my friend left with a nice do, but after 3 TREATMENTS & 10 HOURS. overall i'm disappointed because i do believe that they (or at least some of them) are talented, but what's the point in having skill if you can't create what your client wants? this may be one of the more inexpensive salons in manhattan, but you might as well invest elsewhere if you want to be listened to. read more

As someone with course and puffy hair, I am amazed at how smooth my hair comes out, and the styles last! Nadia's balayage is world-class. The photos speak for themselves. I thought I could dye my hair myself.. until I couldn't. I am naturally a light brown and have always highlighted it blonde and wanted darker brown for the fall, my friend convinced me that I could dye it myself for much cheaper. Which was great-for 6 months until I decided that I wanted to go back to go back lighter. I then box dyed my hair a lighter color which I did not realize would only make my roots light and keep the dark brown that I had. I got the ProAddiction Hair treatment here a few weeks ago but waited to leave a review because I wanted to see how I liked it. I've done Keratin a handful of times and when I told Nadia I was going to get it that week, she encouraged me to read about the ProAddiction treatment online, as it's MUCH cleaner (no chemicals, toxins) but she was not pushy at all. I was sold pretty quickly because I wanted something to make it easier to do my hair but really try to use clean ingredients whenever I can. I truly couldn't be happier that I got this treatment - my hair dries amazingly smooth. No frizz, almost perfectly straight (if I blow dry it for even a minute it's straight but if I air dry it's straight just with a more natural look). I truly don't know why anyone would get Keratin If they knew about this treatment. If you're thinking about Keratin, seriously run to Nadia at Hollywood Salon. read more
