I literally hadn't eaten here in 30 years since high school. It's a testament to how long they have been open but I never understood how they were so popular then or now when I drive by visiting my parents. Yeah their pizza was better then than Pizza Time or a national chain place but that's about it. Not much has changed. A friend had them cater their son's graduation party last weekend and it was all pretty mediocre. Sandwich trays were on par with hastily made Wawa sandwiches and the pasta dishes were just gross (frozen pasta and lousy, bland sauce with a ton of salt). Two stars. We gave this restaurant another chance after a disappointing visit a year ago, hoping things had improved, but nearly every item missed the mark. While the pickup time was fast, the food left a lot to be desired. The steak was hot, but the accompanying bread was completely mush. We paid extra for the "crispy" fries, but because the hot fries were closed up tightly inside two bags, condensation trapped the steam; by the time we checked them just down the road, they had turned into a single, soggy, glued-together lump. We tossed them whe got home. The personal pizza was similarly undercooked and had to be finished in our own oven. The only saving grace of the entire meal was our daughter's Caesar salad with crispy chicken, which actually turned out okay. To prevent these kinds of frustrating experiences, the kitchen staff should be asking themselves "would I want to pay for this on my dime?" Pizzas should be fully baked before boxing, bread shouldn't be served soggy, and staff need to rethink how they bag hot fries--closing them up in sealed double bags traps steam and instantly destroys the crunch customers pay extra for, whereas using vented containers ,Like a salad container with holes punched in the lid or keeping them open would easily fix this. A year is along time between visits but the food seem to be a persistent problem here, and given that our visit a year ago was just as rough, it will be at least another year before we even consider giving this place another try. read more

I was a bit disappointed to have made this mistake UNTIL we picked up our steak and pepperoni pie. Delicious fire oven like crust! The sauce and cheese with an abundance of tasty toppings! The service at Paolo's is amazing. The girls who seat you, the ladies who take your order, and the bartenders are hard-working and quick.... And always friendly. The food is quality and not overpriced. Four meals, drinks, and an appetizer will run you about $100 plus tip, which is about right for today. Probably the worst meal I have had at a restaurant in a long time. Ordered a cheesesteak wrap and fries. The cheesesteak was an old dry hamburger chopped up to resemble a cheesesteak. The waitress said it is a cheesesteak diced fine...I pulled out a ping pong ball of dry hamburger meat and said...really a cheesesteak, please don't embarrass yourself and tell me this is a cheesesteak...this is a poorly chopped up old dry hamburger? Paolo's benefits from being on the outskirts of town, but they need someone competent to answer the phones when taking orders. How hard is it to take a cheesesteak order correctly? I ordered a large cheesesteak with onions, sauce, extra cheese, and hot peppers. That's all. Answering the phone is their main job, and yet they got it wrong. The owner should realize this isn't just about staff incompetence--it's a reflection of his poor business decisions when hiring. Attached is a photo of what I supposedly ordered. Even Ray Charles could tell there's no sauce or peppers, and I'm pretty sure there's only one slice of cheese. I paid $15 for this sandwich, and the best part? They had the nerve to ask for a tip. A tip for what? Messing up my order? Must be for their "stellar" service. Reading, PA has really gone downhill, with locals throwing their money at subpar places like this one. Have eaten here many of times, and there is absolutely no consistency to their take out food whatsoever. At one time you will get exactly what you ask for. Next time, it's like they didn't even hear my order. At times I've had to go back to get it corrected. Tonight ordered 4 Grilled Ham and Cheese No tomatoes on 3 and hot peppers in oil on the 4th. Also fries. Pretty straight forward. First fries- horrible. Like they were the bottom of the pan sitting there all day Sandwiches - none cut in half. Asked for grilled, might have been set near an oven not grilled. Peppers in oil - some kind of red peppers on top. It's truly a shame. We are in a time of significant turmoil: People are divided by racial issues and by being for or against seemingly endless government mandates about COVID-19. The one thing that we SHOULD be able to rally behind is our beautiful US Flag. Old Glory does not represent any one person but she waves as a never ending beacon of hope for ALL Americans. Paolo's has had their flag at half staff for most of the Spring. Other than a few days for corona victims, 1 half day for Memorial Day and a day for Peace Officers Memorial Day - the red, white and blue needs to be at the top of the staff. I called Paolo's and politely asked the girl to have Old Glory raised up. After about a 5 minute hold a got a guy and I again made my request. He told me "its down for the, you know...victims" I explained that only the PA state flag is half staff at the order of the PA Governor and that only the US President generally has the authority to order the US Flag down. He replied: "Well, we are keeping and WE DON'T CARE WHAT THE PRESIDENT SAYS" and HUNG UP ON ME. This is the second case of unbelievably undisciplined and poor customer services I have had in Berks in the past few weeks. Well, Paolos - We ALL need respect the flag that way over a million American service members have die defending. You will NEVER get a CENT of my AMERICAN MONEY. Here's another one of those places in town that I had passed probably a hundred times before finally giving it a go. But once I started working just a few minutes away, Paolo's has become something of a grab-lunch-once-a-month type spot for me. I'd definitely go more often if it wasn't for the, at times, AGONIZINGLY slow service. I think this is why you can sometimes notice the server's eyes light up when someone at your table orders the salad bar since it's, you know, self-serve and all. Today, I put the service time to the test. I was running a tad late on my lunch break, but I still had close to 30 minutes to eat. Instead of ordering a hot cheesesteak or pasta dish, I decided for a small Italian sandwich. It's just lettuce, tomato, onion, cold meats, oil - basically just cold ingredients slapped on a roll. Easy, right? Since the restaurant was less than half full when I entered - and since most of the diners there already had already finished eating and were just hanging out and chatting - I figured it might take ten minutes for my sandwich to come out. Ok, I DID order fries, too, and I know they can take some time especially if cooked fresh, but from my experience, Paolo's always has a few basket of fries ready to go during the lunch hour. Anyways, I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt, but it took over fifteen minutes for a small Italian sandwich and an order of french fries. Ouch! I was eating by myself, too. Forever alone :*( But you know what? If you have some time to kill, the food isn't half bad. I sometimes refer to these little mom and pop ristorantes as "italian diners". Maybe that's not a fair comparison, but they definitely have that vibe. And that's not a bad thing. It's Italian comfort food at its finest. Just make sure you have plenty of time. HOMOPHOBE ALERT‍ I'd give it zero stars if I could. My wife and I went in on Valentine's Day to the dining area. The place was only half full and there were 3 servers that we saw tending to the 6 or so tables that were filled. We sat there for 15+ minutes without any acknowledgement. No drinks, no "I'll be right with you," nothing. We decided to leave. My wife went outside to the car while I tried to handle this quietly with the hostess station, only to hear a gentleman at the table in front of us refer to my wife and I as "dykes." Paolo's did nothing to stop this type of hateful, threatening, anti-LGBTQ speech. My advice is: if you identify anywhere on the queer spectrum, stay clear of this place or you'll be humiliated and degraded. read more

November 17, 2019 Ordered a large Paolo's Special stromboli. Specifically ordered it with extra extra extra LIGHT onions. Did I get that? Absolutely not. What I did get was a stromboli that that had more sweet peppers AND onions than I would likely consume in a year. Not kidding. The stromboli looked great as I opened the box. Nice and big and looked delicious. Upon cutting into it I saw a very *large* amount of onions and sweet peppers with very *little* sausage or pepperoni or extra cheese, as it's advertised on the menu. I order this exact same stromboli with extra extra extra light onions a few times a year, so I already knew what I was *supposed* to be getting. Previously, I have not been disappointed. This time I was. Literally, the *only* reason I go to Paolo's is because it's less than a half mile from my house. It's certainly not the best pizza or stromboli in the area but generally isn't bad. From now on I will have to travel a little further to get my stromboli somewhere else but I suppose that's what I have to do to get what I want. If anyone from Paolo's takes the time to read this, please straighten up your act. If the person who takes the phone orders isn't writing legibly, OR the person who makes the order can't read (or doesn't care) fix the problem. If you really don't care about allowing customers to request changes to standard items on the menu, then state that on the menu. If you are going to advertise a stromboli as having extra cheese, then make sure that there is extra cheese. If your stromboli says pepperoni and sausage are in it, then pepperoni and sausage should be present throughout the stromboli, not just in a meager amount near the middle of the stromboli while a normal sized slice from either end yields nothing but dough, LOTS of onions, and a mound of sweet peppers. Friday was the third strike. We have been customers of Paolo's for decades. In recent months the taste is off... meatballs, sauce just aren't the same. Service on Friday was so-so. We used to be able to enjoy are salads before the food arrived. Now we're not even close to finishing the salad before the hot food arrives. Must be under new management (again). Won't be back for awhile now. Heard a new place is gonna start serving pasta dishes. We will probably go there. Sorry Paolo's. read more

Went here at 1230 for lunch today (Saturday). Wanted to eat on the patio but is was reserved for a private party. Not a good idea on a Saturday. We sat in the bar area inside. It was starting to get packed inside and people were coming in then leaving because they couldn't sit on the patio. There was one waitress in the bar area and after every table got full our service came to a halt. Couldn't get a second drink and couldn't order any food. We got her attention and got the check. She apologized for the waiting and said they got busy all of a sudden. Another waitress was definitely needed. Have been here before and only ate on the patio and never had any trouble with service and on a better note, the food is usually always really good. Service is fairly slow, place is busy but not busy enough to warrant taking 20 minutes to get a beer refill. Ordered to 2 Can eat special which is a deal and The appetizer certainly arrived before my beer! Cheesy garlic bread starter was good and plentiful for 2. Main course arrived nicely also. Worse meal in my 58 years. I never send back food. I ordered chicken and shrimp with a garlic sauce on vegetables. Came with 2 side. Italian soup, ok, not great. Salad with balsamic, no flavor, like eating crunchy water. Chicken and shrimp, also zero flavor. They put undercooked frozen vegetables on it (still cold in the middle) and apparently all the water from them. No garlic sauce, just flavorless water. I ate 1 shrimp, tiny bite of chicken and a bite out of a piece of ice cold broccoli. The waitress came back and said she could only comp $5 off the $21 meal but she would try to get more. Then came back and said i had to pay for the soup and nasty salad. We also had 2 other meals. No apology. If they had decent customer service, did the right thing and comped the meal I would have gone back but never again. Too many other places to go. read more

The bartender inside was down right ugly to my party of 4. Seemed as though she was not in the mood to deal with "bar people". (perhaps you should work in a library) She was very short, arrogant and rude and acted as if she just wanted us to leave. She was however very nice and accommodating to the Paolo's "regulars".
