What a great find in the Reading, PA area! We walked up to the restaurant, hearing the music of Lou Monte, a Jersey favorite, and, upon entering, heard the owner and a patron conversing in Italian. These were good signs that an authentic dining experience was about to occur. The restaurant itself is warm and inviting and the staff is terrific. We enjoyed it so much we made a repeat visit the next day. We were lucky to have Maya as our server on both occasions -- what a wonderful young lady! She spent ample time with us explaining the whole menu, some local favorites and the love that the owner/chef puts into his dishes. And she checked in with us often. Excellent! We had a great time on both visits. From cocktails, appetizers, entrees and our desserts, Maya walked us through everything - so friendly and knowledgeable! We enjoyed the sampler appetizer with bruschetta, meatballs and mushroom crostini. Very good! Bread came out with our soup and salad - my wife's Lobster Bisque was very good and my house balsamic salad hit the spot. On the 2nd night we had the crostini variety, with fig, honey, prosciutto - great! For entrees, the "Sunday Gravy" dish can easily feed two - delicious! An assortment of meat simmered in their sauce with homemade pasta. My wife enjoyed that on visit #1; my son went for it on visit #2. We also enjoyed the Chicken Milanese and 'Ndunderi - delicate gnocchi in vodka sauce with small Wagyu beef meatballs baked with smoked scamorza cheese (similar to mozzarella). Excellent! Stiff drop-off from previous visit whereby feeling of boutique dishes served in speak-easy is replaced w/ mediocre food & price gouging. Bar: No garnish, poured over ice in wine glass, making cocktail feel like concoction I'd get at a girlfriend's house. Dirty Martini description: choice of vodka or gin served w/ blue cheese olives. I'm asked which, I say gin...well/house gin is fine, asked if I'm good w/ blue cheese olives, yes please. Get check, $2 extra gin, $2 extra for olives. C'mon, so u have garnish but charge for it. Mains: $34 ravioli + $2 upcharge for side soup/salad. Had Tuscan Short Rib Ravioli many times. Always strong flavors & a creaminess from wine & gorgonzola. Meat tough, barely sauced, dry, no flavor. Reminds me of ravioli you'd dump out of plastic packaging from refrigerated section of grocery store. Chicken Parm, VERY good, moist, pounded not too thin, crisp exterior. But no fresh basil, no pizzaz, nothing I couldn't get at a higher-quality pizza shop. Who's in kitchen, a Chef or Aunt Gianna? We went without a reservation on a busy night. We were invited to sit and eat at the bar, which we were fine with. The bartender was outstanding! Great drinks and a better personality. The owner was actively greeting and checking in on his guests. Kudos to him. My only complaint is the clams in the dish I ordered were tiny. The size of my thumbnail. Hey, whaddaya know, it's my first review update... well, ever. And this one really is long overdue, folks. Let's jump right in. Salute has a supremely gifted staff from front to back. And it all starts at the top. There's never a night Giovanni isn't out in the dining room greeting each and every table. Then it's back in the kitchen, expediting and working his magic at the peak of dinner hour. A true maestro. The last trip really encapsulates this. We arrive for our reservation, receive a warm greeting at the door, and snag the last free booth. Server, Michelle, is great. Charming, knowledgeable, astute - you name it. App comes out (fried mozz, one of life's simple pleasures), then salads and bread, everything is humming along nicely. Giovanni has already stopped by and said hello. It's Mom's birthday, so she goes a little hog wild and gets the special filet, medium rare. When it comes out, it honestly looks like a pack of dogs had already gone a few rounds with it. The filet wasn't even in one piece. Legit it looked like someone had just taken a cleaver and whacked it a few times with a cleaver. On top of that, the temp was wrong and the meat was tough. Personally, it takes a lot for me to send something back, but after seeing my mom try to chew on this thing, and the fact that the steak visually was just so far below our expectation, it just seemed appropriate to notify our server. Heather comes back, takes a look at the steak and could immediately tell something was off. By this time, I had taken a few bites of my Day Boat Scallops and found the angel hair pasta was overcooked to the point it had all clumped together to form a sort of giant dough ball. I told Heather that the scallops were fantastic and I wasn't trying to send it back, but sadly the pasta had turned to complete mush. It took her a split second to say, "You know what? I'm going to take that back as well if you don't mind." She apologized and hurried back to the kitchen. Within about 10 minutes fresh new dishes were brought out, this time cooked to absolute perfection. Giovanni once again stopped by the table to check up on things. No excuses, just genuine sincerity and the hope that we received dishes that met the standard we had been so accustomed to. As any good owner should, Giovanni appreciated the fact that it was brought to the kitchen's attention. That's how a staff doesn't get complacent. Michelle was apologetic from that point of the meal on and even offered a free dessert to take home, which my mom happily took her up on. We assured her that this would absolutely not deter us from future visits. Salute has been my family's preferred destination for fancy Italian dinners to celebrate special occasions. We were very disappointed when we told the waitress we share our meals. I am diabetic and can not each much at a time due to my medication. She immediately told us there is a $5.00 charge for an extra plate. We had been there one earlier time and were not charged that fee. We don't understand why an extra charge is necessary. We are retired and "eating out" is special for us. We have been to many, many restaurants and have never run into this before. Having said all that, I do want to be fair to Salute and state that our food was delicious. The waitress, when we expressed our disappointment, remained polite and respectful. read more

This place is a gem. Our server Lauren was knowledgeable and extremely pleasant. My wife had the eggplant parm and I had the Sunday Gravy and both were excellent. Came here with my Mom when visiting PA. Giovanni was incredibly welcoming as he is a long-time friend of my Mom's. The atmosphere was what I expected of a higher-end Italian restaurant and almost all of the tables were full, even at 7:30. It was a little loud as a result but not offputting and once we were in our booth, it was easy to talk. I started out with an alcoholic beverage (mojito) and it was quite good. We ordered dinner at the same time because we knew it was getting closer to closing. I ordered the scallops over angel hair pasta and my Mom ordered the seasonal special of Saltimbocca. Both dishes were well presented but VERY salty for our palate. It was hard to get past the salt to taste the food flavor. I'm hoping it was an off night, and I'll definitely return as I'm interested in tasting some other menu items they have to offer. Pricing was average for the food type and atmosphere. This was our first visit to this restaurant. It was highly recommended. When we placed our order I asked if bread was served and she told us "yes". My husband ordered a salad with his meal. I did not. We did order an appetizer which came out. Then was the 20 minute wait. A girl even stopped at our table after walking by a few times and asked if we we waiting or needed something. I proceeded to say we were told there was bread but no one has brought anything out and my husband had ordered a salad. Usually these items come pretty quick at any restaurant. The bread did come but salad did not so we thought maybe it came out with the meal. The meal came and no salad. By the way all of the food was very good! Service not so good. When it came time for dessert we asked for 2 creme brulees. The girl came out with one and placed it in front of us and said sorry but there was only one left you will have to share! WHAT!!! didn't asked if there was another desert you would like. This dessert is my absolute favorite so i was extremely disappointed. When she brought the check we were charged for the salad and we told her it never came and she said oh must have forgot it. She did offer to make one to go but that wasn't the point. Not sure if we will revisit. The place was not even busy so we couldn't blame it on that. read more
