There were five of us, each ordering one drink. One drink that was ordered iced was made hot and then simply poured over ice. This ruins the integrity of the espresso and waters down the entire drink. My sister was unable to finish her drink because it was gross. Another drink was forgotten entirely and was only made after we repeated what it was three times. The employee at the register eventually pulled up our order on the iPad and read it back, confirming that we had ordered everything correctly. The whole interaction felt awkward, and the person working the register was passive aggressive. I will say that the person making the coffee was friendly and quickly made the forgotten drink once they realized what happened. I've worked in specialty coffee for five years, so I understand that you don't have to be happy or overly friendly all the time when working in customer service. But people often go out for coffee as a small treat, to fill a craving, or as a pick-me-up on a bad day. A welcoming interaction makes a difference, and unfortunately, the service here left more of an impression on me than the coffee or the space did.

But for me, this visit was about much more than just a good meal. I used to come here more than 30 years ago with my sister. She and my brother-in-law are both gone now, and I wanted to come back and revisit a place that held some wonderful memories for me. I had the opportunity to meet the owner, and to my surprise, he remembered my sister and brother-in-law. He shared some wonderful things about them, and that made walking through the door worth more to me than I can really put into words. I'm extremely glad I stopped. They serve great traditional American food as well as absolutely amazing Mexican food. The service, cleanliness, food, and genuine small-town hospitality made this a very special experience. If you're passing through Delta, Colorado, I highly, highly recommend stopping at C&J Cafe. There is parking out front and plenty of additional parking in the back. Usually, I'm a thin crust kind of gal, but Propaganda Pie's hearty, large, rectangular Carnivore Creation ($32) is awesome. Chow down on the light, airy crust with plenty of caramelized cheese, ham, bacon, pepperoni, sausage, and red sauce. Or ponder the other amusingly named choices: I'm Not a Crook, White Noise, etc. Add a large Caesar Salad ($14) to share. The romaine lettuce tastes like it has just been picked, the croutons are large, and the parmesan is artisanal - not that fake canned crap. Ice cold draft lagers make it all perfect.
