    Blue ribbon banana pudding

After spending the early fall morning cruising the Natchez Trace Parkway south of Nashville, we navigated the winding two-lanes along and across the Duck River into the little town of Centerville. It was one of those moments that feel like you are in a movie when we pulled into the gravel parking lot under a cloudless sky. We were greeted by the official scent of autumn-sweet hardwood smoke-as we walked towards the unassuming wood-sided smokehouse. Inside and outside, the walls are covered with a mix of barbecue, family and hometown sports memorabilia- which is pretty commonplace, but the difference is that here it feels real instead of being a cheap reproduction. In fact, some of the décor was salvaged when the original structure was gutted by a fire in 2015. Upon entering the museum/restaurant, you place your order at the counter directly in front of you. A menu board is at the top of the wall, with a chalkboard listing daily specials beneath it. This day's options included baby back ribs (a Friday-Saturday special) and banana pudding. These were obvious choices, and we rounded out our meal for three with a pork plate, which includes two sides and cornbread. We took a seat at one of the small tables. Soon, our food was brought out. The ribs were a thing of beauty. These were the dry-rub ribs- they offered the choice of dry or sauced when ordering, and this was the right choice. Gigantic bark and additional rub encased tender meat that pulled cleanly off the bone. I personally prefer a little more smoke flavor, but they were definitely a top 5 for me. The pork was also well cooked and perfectly moist. If I was forced to find something to complain about, it would be that again, I would want more smoke. That is a personal preference though, and not a critique. A flavorful hot sauce and an unusual sweet sauce (maybe a hint of molasses?) added plenty of interest to the delicious bites of pork. Added to the corn cake, it made a heavenly combo. The sides and dessert also exhibited the attention to detail practiced here. We enjoyed a vinegar slaw which complimented the pork perfectly, and fresh, crisp fried okra straight out of the fryer. I've eaten a lot of banana pudding at barbecue places- probably the most common dessert- but this was the best one I could remember. Only the pudding was premade; the bananas were freshly sliced and vanilla wafers just out of the box so nothing was soggy. I don't know whether this had anything to do with the fact that the National Banana Pudding Festival was being held in Centerville the next day, but I think this one would have been a contender in any contest. I briefly considered going back the next day for more, but other plans were already being made. But man, I hope to get back sometime. The food and the people here have a special ingredient. It's love, and you can taste it.

A colossal pork sandwich with smoked corn on the cob. 2 thumbs up!!

2nd visit. The pork here is top notch. Everything I've eaten has been great. Today's highlight was the smoked corn on the cob. I had a pulled pork sandwich served on cornbread pancakes with fried okra and white beans. My friend had a pork sandwich and the smoked corn. The people that work here are super nice and the food is so worth a drive into the country.

Family was happy with their meals. If you are new, the updated menu is hard to find online but I went off of the one they posted on FB. Please note that the brisket is shredded. (If that bothers you, but I will say that although we didn't know when we ordered, everyone said it was delicious!! ) Also note, if you get a drink or a meal with a drink. The staff will not tell you but the drink is self serve atm. When you walk in, the drink station is to the right of the checkout counter. Just after you pay, go grab your drink! The owner is friendly! **The fried green tomatoes were definitely my favorite! The sweet BBQ sauce and Spicy BBQ sauce were our favorites.

From the moment You pull into the parking lot It just feels like home The staff is welcoming and the decor is spot on The food. Don't get me started It's as down home as it gets. Lip smacking good. The hot sauce I'll take a bowl. I could go on and on The only issue. They need more y shirts.

Loved it! Right off 100 in Centerville and has the tasty food one would look for in a barbecue place. I enjoyed the lemon pie, my daughter enjoyed the ice cream sundae and our friend enjoyed the pecan pie.

Super filling and eclectic to boot! Loved eating their mouth watering bar-b-q! The place is super casual and has lots of antique signs and local memorabilia to check out as well. Going to come back soon to visit for sure!

A must stop for anyone seeking a delicious meal and authentic experience. I've eaten in thousands…read moreof restaurants all over Tennessee and kept hearing other locals in Nashville talk about how incredible it was encouraging me to go . So when my cousin from up north came down, we decided to give it a try. I wanted to show her why I love this area and Nashville is so busy and congested now that I had to find a place she could truly experience the best TN has to offer without the rush and stress of people everywhere. So we headed to The Mason Jar Restaurant in Centerville giving us a beautiful drive to see if the people raving about it were right! She had the chicken Philly, which is a unique southern inspired version on Texas toast and it was killer! I've never seen her finish anything but her plate was clean and I was so grateful the experience lived up to the hype! I ordered the veggie burger which is a chipotle black bean burger on a brioche bun and I couldn't get enough!!! So much so, I ordered one to go and ate it for lunch the next day! This restaurant has the unique charm that is so rare these days where everything seems like a chain or big corporation copy elsewhere. When you dine at MJR you can expect a welcoming environment and incredible service making you feel like part of the family. A gem that is a priceless experience you can only get in the south outside the noise of Nashville. Would recommend it to anyone seeking locally owned charm meets the savory yummy goodness of a clearly well thought out mixture of options this menu has to offer. Head on down as soon as you can as this is one of few places everyone enjoys thankfully living up to its incredible hard earned reputation! Great ambiance service and food which is a triple hitter I was so lucky to find!

This is an amazing spot to have some delicious food. I'm looking forward to trying more menu items…read moresoon!

Update to prior review…read more I always enjoyed the Shack. A year ago they started having very odd hours which made it hard to purchase from them. So we stopped getting takeout there for awhile. Once I passed and saw they were open and decided to get an extra pound of smoked pork from here as well. It has changed in a drastic way. the "smoked" pork now has an ever intrusive taste of liquid smoke, to the point we threw most of it away (that is a real bad sign at my house.) Giving an update of 2 stars as I know they can do better, but alas I don't know it will change. The owner is very friendly as well. I don't thing there is really good bbq in town at this point.

Passing through and saw one review but it looked like a place to stop and try. We were here at…read more5/45 on a Friday night. Not busy but a varied menu with lots of choices for kids. They even had a bologna sandwich which they said they make and smoke their own. Food came out fast. Two thumbs up on the hotdog and French fries and the single pulled pork sandwich from the kids (ages 10/12). My daughter and I both had a pulled pork sandwich plate with coleslaw on the sandwiches and Sides of potato salad and onion rings. Her sandwich was regular sauce and mine spicy. They set the plats down so that we had each other's so we each had a bite of the other's sandwich when we noticed. That means there was a definite difference in sauce flavors with hers being more Sweet and mine spicy. We both enjoyed our meals immensely and if we lived in the area would frequent this place. We saw a couple of plates of full racks of ribs come Out as we were leaving and I had wished I had room in a cooler to bring some back to WI for my husband. As it is, the foodie he is, he decided we would incorporate this restaurant into our FL travels in December so he can try it out.

My dear Ronnie's BBQ,…read more You never opened your doors, and now, after seeing the calendar, I understand why. Juneteenth came, and with it, another day spent staring longingly at your darkened windows. I don't imagine you'll ever read this letter, but my heart insists that I write it anyway. Ronnie's... oh, Ronnie's. I was beginning to believe again. I had visions of smoky barbecue, tender pulled pork, and the comfort only your food could bring. But every time I arrived these past months, I was met not with the smell of hickory smoke, but with locked doors and silent parking lots. My hope faded a little more with each visit. When your lights are on, the world feels right. But when I pull into the parking lot and find another "Closed" sign staring back at me, I realize that ours is a love destined to be tested by unfortunate timing. Perhaps fate simply refuses to let us be together. Perhaps I am forever cursed to crave what I cannot have. You've broken my heart more times than I care to admit. And yet, somehow, I know that if I saw your "Open" sign tomorrow, I would come running back without hesitation. Such is the burden of loving great barbecue. So I leave you with this letter--not in anger, but in sorrow. I return to you my appetite, though I suspect it will find its way back the moment your smoker starts up again. Until that glorious day, I must try to move on... though we both know I won't. Forever waiting in your parking lot, Your most loyal, and repeatedly heartbroken, customer.
