I wanted to love this small diner l, but we tried this today and likely won't return for a second trip. The ambience was fun, definitely a community feel and many people were teachers at some point in the Robbinsdale area. Yes, we talked with everyone in the room we were eating. There are a some tables and bar stools up front and more tables and booths in the back room. Service was good and the staff was very friendly. The food was "okay" nothing special. I really wanted to have a better review because it had a fun diner vibe, but just can't suggest eating there. The Papa's Benedict seemed safe, but the English muffins had burnt edges and were rubbery inside. Ham was good, eggs were cooked correctly, sauce was separated. The good news is that it's totally safe to eat a broken or curdled sauce, as they pose no food safety issues. The bad news is that curdled sauces may be so off-putting that you, your family, or your guests, lose all interest in eating them. Hash browns were clumpy and difficult to separate. Not sure how that happened, I poked around on them but couldn't determine why they were so sticky. The raspberry pancakes looked good but were a bit on the doughy side and they had a metallic or chemical raspberry flavor. Sausage was good, but couldn't have been cooked a bit more. When we went, the place was full, but we were seated pretty quickly. They have an extensive all-American menu and specials. Pretty decent menu. Lots of choices and a big omelet selection. We both ordered the meat and eggs. Mine came with an Italian Sausage patty which was really good. Terrible service. We called ahead asking if there was a wait because we had an appointment that we needed to get to. We were told no wait, just come on over! Pulled up minutes later, there was a long line. The person behind us said "they always tell you there is no wait when there is a wait". After a 15-20 minute wait we were finally seated. Waited another 15 minutes, finally flagged down a waitress and asked if she could take our order. She rolled her eyes and said she was not a waitress but she could serve us drinks while we wait for the actual waitress. We asked for green tea. She rolled her eyes again and said "we are not that kind of place". We said ok, we'll just get coffee. That was not acceptable to her either and we got into a ridiculous back and forth where we were like "just give us whatever" and she was like "I am mad and I will stay mad thank you very much". After all that it turns out they do have black tea so we got our tea. Some time after that an actual waitress came over looking very depressed and overworked and took our order... and then we waited another 20 minutes for the food. In the meantime two parties that were behind us in line got served, leaving us wondering if we were "punished" for teagate earlier. The food was what you'd expect from a greasy spoon that re-uses the same oil over and over (can't fault them for it I suppose - the prices are very cheap so corners must be cut). My favorite is the Biscuits & Gravy which is a rare find in a non-southern state. Pancakes are delicious and huge which I typically share with other folks in my party. Eggs Benedict is tasty as-well. Okay, so I didn't actually meet Papa, and I don't know where the name came from, but I went with my sister and our waitress's name was Erin. I'd like to give her a special mention here because of how kind and helpful she was! Erin was always refilling water and coffee, watched for us to be ready to order, and was a great communicator! It's gotta be tough to work behind a mask all day, but I had a feeling Erin was smiling behind it because she was just awesome:) The environment is, as I said, worn and old-fashioned, but definitely in a good way. The booths were a little elevated off the ground, and I always like that. The menu is extensive but not overwhelming, offering options from all-day-breakfast to burgers. Prices at this place are very fair, and they are cooperative with (if not welcome to) special requests. When we were finally able to pull the trigger on items, I ended up going with Papa's Own Omelette (aka The Square Foot) and my sister chose the Papa's Pancakes, one with blueberries, with a side of Crispy Home-Style Sliced Potatoes. My coffee came in a styrofoam cup, which was not my favorite when compared to the diner-usual of a mug. However, before leaving, Erin refilled my cup and gave me a lid, so that made up for it. She also refilled my sister's hot cocoa, which NO Restaurant has EVER done for her, for free!!! Food: Our orders came out quickly, and were as hot as you could ask for. My Papa's Own Omelette was folded excellently, clean at every corner despite being stuffed with "everything but the kitchen sink" as described by the menu (Hash browns, mushrooms, cheese, peppers, onions, ham, tomatoes). It was delicious, the crispy potatoes contrasting the tender eggs and well-cooked vegetables perfectly. The cheese was cheddar and added a welcome note of flavor to the savory dish. I got to try both the pancakes and potatoes. The Crispy Home-Style Sliced Potatoes were pretty darn good, but I would likely stick with hash browns in the future. The pancakes are a different story. Not sure how they cook 'em, but Papa's has perfected the science of making this common circular breakfast item. Sweet and fluffy in all the right ways, the pancakes are for real at this joint, and make sure you try at least one with blueberries... because dang, I'm all about that tang! Overall, My sister and I greatly enjoyed our visit to this little cafe. Make sure to stop by the next time you want to dine in a place that feels like home. You get 2 eggs and 2 meat(s). My eggs were light and fluffy and scrambled and my sausage patties were great. I dream about those pancakes, fyi. I've been craving them since the day I went to try them out. They serve breakfast ALL DAY LONG (YAAAAAAY), for you breakfast heads, like me. The only thing they do not serve all day are the Belgium waffles. Service: Great! One waitress worked the entire room and she must be a fan favorite because she new all the names of the regulars and what they order. My mom got pancakes and I got Papa's special Omelet.. ...it was kind of an "everything" omelet. Pancakes were on the sweet side, so syrup not necessary... not sure how I feel about that, since we prefer to eat pancakes with syrup and Papa's omelet was a little heavy on the hash browns and kind of greasy...but overall, good food. I was hoping when we found Papa's Cafe online that we had just missed a neighborhood gem - a greasy spoon, diner type place that serves all-day breakfast. Unfortunately what I found was a dirty old diner that made me feel a little uneasy. The place is not totally run down but I wouldn't call it clean. The rug was old and stained. The booths were covered in thick vinyl, but every single seat cushion was taped up with blue tape - I hate sitting in booths that are repaired with tape. It just makes my skin crawl. At the time that we visited, there were only a couple of other patrons, and all of them looked like crusty old regulars. One of the men kept saying inappropriate things to the waitress, and as the only other woman in the room, it made me uncomfortable. Foodwise, it was OK. I got eggs benedict. It was fine but nothing to write home about. My husband got a burger. The waitress surprised us both by asking how he wanted it cooked. The burger that was delivered to our table was well done, which made us both wonder why they bothered to ask. We also got a blueberry pancake, which was indeed a really nice pancake. Fluffy with crisp edges, it was probably the best thing we ate. The one redeeming thing, and the reason this is not a one-star review, was our waitress. She asked my husband if he wanted his diet coke in a very large glass or just a normal one thats large anyway but my husband is a big pop/soda drinker so it was nice to have a big one. She also went out of the way to tell us some of the customers favorite dishes as well as hers. Told us about the dessert. We took home a chocolate cake ( I think it was death by chocolate cake that was just made today sorry can't tell you how good that was as I'm still too full to try it but it looks very good she also explained if its a weekend we came should call ahead as they are busy and they have several specials that change from week to week. I would for sure give the server a 5 star review herself and will be a big reason what I decided for the number of stars at the cafe. All in all it was a wonderful experience and I will return for sure. We have begun having our meals here on a regular basis. It is wonderful that they are open until 7:00 at night on the weekdays. Normally these wonderful cafes close at 2:00 or 3:00 in the afternoon. This wonderful hole in the wall is also okay with well behaved dogs being in the restaurant. Ours happens to be a service dog, but it's my understanding he would be welcome either way. Found this place when other local restaurants were too busy. Glad they were, because this is a cute place with great food. We split the apple cinnamon french toast and the Belgium waffle breakfast. The waffle was so light and fluffy, the American fries were done perfectly. The caramel for the french toast was very good, except for the nuts in it that we were unaware there would be. By far my favorite breakfast/brunch place! I have brought friends and family here over the years and everyone always has a great time. The servers are exceptional, even on busy Saturday and Sunday mornings. The food is fantastic, you can't go wrong ordering anything in their menu. I am a diehard fan of their pancakes, while my boyfriend loves to try something different every time. He has enjoyed their omelettes, Benedict's, biscuits & gravy, as well as many of their creative breakfast specials. I cannot wait to enjoy Papa's for years to come!
