My wife and I stayed at this resort for her birthday trip in Tulum! We booked their jungle cabana with bathroom. It looked really cute in their website and so we were excited! Checking in: the representatives seemed flighty and I even had to remind the attendant to give us our room key after we checked in. A red flag! Plus we were told that there are no outlets in our room but we can charge our phones at the front desk or at the restaurant. Hmmm.. The room: It still looked cute and it did have a grass roof. And so there were dead bugs on top of the mosquito net covering our bed. But I wasn't scared. Really, I didn't want to run. The musty smell of the room was too comforting to leave. Every day we would find mysterious bits that resembled poop all over the entire cabana. The restaurant: We were fortunate enough to have booked our room before they got rid of the free breakfast. So we went to the restaurant for breakfast everyday. While the view from the restaurant was fantastic the food was awful. Watery eggs! I repeat, watery eggs! And the coffee guy didn't even drink coffee. Ha! After out 4 day stay, my wife and I left Papaya Playa covered with bug bites. Sand fleas from Papaya Playa's beach must've had a pretty great feast over our legs. Nothing 2 days of Benadryl to stop the itching couldn't fix. The resort was such a scene. I spent 5 nights at this resort for a work event (Tough life, I know I know.) But it was the best work trip of my life. The staff bent over backwards to accommodate our crew and the talent. The rooms? Perfect. Each room had its own pool + sun deck. The entire hotel was built AROUND the jungle, not through it so it really feels like you are in the jungle. To have a forrest open up to the beautiful beach...it doesn' get much better than that. Again, the staff was amazing and I still keep in touch with them today! I'll be back for sure. Favorite beach club in Tulum!!! The Papaya Playa cocktail with mezcal & fresh papaya is my absolute favorite. All of the ceviches they serve are AMAZING!! We ended up ordering seconds of each ceviche dish, they were truly that good. I haven't stayed at the Hotel, but the daybeds are a great way to enjoy the beach with food & drink service + provide shade and towels whenever you want a break from the sun. read more

The concept of the Papaya Playa Project could have been very enjoyable if the rooms were simple yet tasteful. However, this was literally a gross hostel feeling environment. Overall, Tulum was amazing - so beautiful, amazing beaches and great restaurants. The Papaya Playa Project was another story. I think an undercover SPG representative should go stay there and see what's going on. Just now, I again took a look at the "rooms" photos on spg.com and they are all immaculate and look like a fantasy, and that is what I was expecting going into this: simple, cabana style rooms with no frills but so gorgeous. There is nothing on the website that indicates a disgusting hostel. Please take a look at Papaya Playa on spg.com then look at my photos to compare. Here are a few things about my stay: Google maps takes you ~8km past the hotel on a very busy 2 lane road - the welcome email should warn about this and provide directions. When you arrive, they tell you to park in a parking lot that has no lights and no directions to the check in area - no bell boy to greet you to help will bags - you just wander around in the pitch black (if you arrive past dark). The check in people told me they had no proof that the guest services rep told me I could be upgraded if available, but they did tell me that they may have an upgrade for me once they hear back from him and I could have 2 complimentary massages for having to wait a night for an answer (which they later denied that they told me I would be given massages). The second day I was told there were no upgrades available due to high season (which is understandable because I know that upgrades are always based on availability). I was accused me of lying about being offered free massages, after first being told that the free massages were for a different couple. They also didn't understand that I had been inconvenienced in any way because they thought the massages were for not having an upgrade for me, which I was never upset about (after this I mostly stayed away from my hotel, spent no more money at the beach or on food other than for NYE). On Dec 31 day, I went to the bar and asked for limes for my water and they said the bar is closed. I asked where in the hotel I could get limes and they told me they are all in the pantry and there is no way I can get limes because the bar is closed and there is no room service. So guests literally couldn't get anything unless they go elsewhere. On Dec 31 night, I went to the bar to get drinks to welcome in the new year and the bartender told me that I can't charge drinks to my room because the hotel amenities are closed for the NYE party. I had to get a party bracelet and add money to it and then get drinks. They only accepted cash but fortunately I had $2000 pesos on me. I asked the bracelet woman how much the drinks cost and she said beers are $80 pesos, alcohol with a mixer is $160 pesos and a fancy cocktail is $240 pesos. I added the full $2000 and asked how do I get my money back if i don't use it all and she said you lose it and you don't get any money back (which to me seems like a scam because there's no way everyone can perfectly use all the money on their bracelets, they just pocket the remainder). Anyway, the beers ended up being $100 pesos and the alcohol with mixer was $200 pesos. When I told the bartender I was quoted different prices she literally started screaming at me and left with my drinks. I think other people had told her the same thing and she was fed up with it or something. All of this and I just simply wanted to get drinks for NYE. The room: No phone No room service - if I wanted coffee in my room I had to go to the bar, and spill coffee all the way back through the jungle about 1/4 mile to my room. The doors don't touch the ground so spiders, roaches, ants and beetles just crawl right under. The towel rack was made of rotting wood with either paint or gum on the part where the towel hangs from. The closet had no light, I had to use my iPhone flashlight to see the clothes. The closet shelves were made of plywood. The shower head sprayed water in many directions and drips water on you from the ceiling. The sink has no hot water. There were no chairs in the room. There was only one outlet so we had to alternate charging our phones, watches, portable batteries and it was a struggle. The paint on the walls and floor was peeling off in places. The patio was beautiful but for some reason the cleaning people stored their trash and water bottles in our patio area, so there were cleaning people constantly walking across our "private" patio. I think the room had been abandoned for a while because the second day they upgraded our blinds to blackout curtains, the third day they gave us a rug in our room and the fourth day they changed our hammock. I've been coming to Tulum and Papaya Playa for years. It's unfortunate to see they now only care about money and serving European customers at a higher standard. I had a reservation for over a month, and was told the beach club would be closed (texted the night before) and that we could still come for brunch in the resteraunt. We downsized our reso and arrived to see a fully open beach club. We waited while the hostess spoke to another guest and then asked if we could still get the beach beds for 6 and our friends would come. She said "you're late", who trains these people? We had been there since our start time, and why were we not notified that morning that they ended up opening the beach club if they had my number. The only thing this HOSTESS should be worried about is "how can I make sure these customers have a good experience since we just told them the club was closed and their watching others lounge on beach beds". I was about to leave because this isn't the first time I've experienced rude behavior at Papaya, but it was my friends first time and we should be able to enjoy a planned experience. So I asked for a Manager, and he magically had two beds ... go figure. Why should I have to get upset and ruin my vibe as a paying customer?? I literally am in tulum for months at a time, and have spent plenty of money here. Relax! After an entire day of ordering food and drinks, and before they even gave us the bill tried to tell us we didn't spend the min spend and had to order more since they had to close the tab soon. We had three kids with us who live in tulum during the winter and we STILL spent the min spend, once they brought the check we verified that and didn't get an apology. This doesn't make me want to leave a nice tip, this doesn't make me feel appreciated as a customer who just spent hours spending money and it doesn't make me want to come back or bring new customers. I have sent many people over the years as well. I wish I could give this place zero stars. On the evening of 9/29/18 my boyfriend and I went to Papaya Playa Project for their monthly full moon party. We just wanted to go to a place with great music for dancing with a decent bar. Long story short; PLEASE FOR YOUR OWN SAKE just go to a local bar on the town instead!!! You will not only save a good chunk of money, but will also get better drinks at half the cost in a venue that isn't so pretentious and snooty. The cost for the both of us to enter was $78USD. Which doesn't cover any drinks. Not a single one. We bought a couple of drinks that were $160 pesos each and were disappointed in the quality. The dance floor was a small oval area on the sand which was all right but the music was lame. We left the venue after about a half hour or so. We wanted to leave sooner though!! In fact, we scanned the party for when we first entered and knew it wasn't for us and asked for a refund within a couple minutes of entering but of course we were not allowed to do so. Which is somewhat understandable however the hotel staff member we talked to about this was pretty rude to us when inquired about refunding us. Don't stay here. I wanted to believe in the concept and if it was done well it would be neat. But as of August 2020 this place is a wreck. The grounds are barely maintained, there were piles of debris on the beach. The food is not memorable and overpriced, service slow. When the seaweed is in town, the beach is not swimmable and like most places in Tulum, there is no pool to make up for this new reality of seaweed suffocated beaches. The toiletries in the room are kept in wooden bottles and the heat and humidity spoil the contents, the "shampoo" smelled like sewage. But, the worst part is the management. We were given a room, the air conditioning broken. Fine, moved to another room. Second room, air conditioner broken. Maintenance is sent. We were told the A/c was not broken, we had to close the windows. Uhmmm... no - it actually doesn't work - what's happening is that probably due to COVID they are not maintaining the property and stuff is broken. It was pretty obvious the air conditioner just needed some Freon but when we went to talk to the front desk, they blamed us - no, the air conditioner is not broken! But... it is. At that point what do you do? We left a day early because without the ocean and without A/c we had no break from the heat. Despite leaving by checkout time, we could not get our money back, which is basically theft because they failed to provide a basic amenity listed as part of their service. Just stay away. read more

As a loyal Starwood customer, I had high hopes for this hotel when I booked my 4 night stay over new years for $4165 USD. Unfortunately the condition of the property and the room was so awful that I left in the middle of the night my second night, even though the hotel refused to refund my remaining prepaid nights. Starting with the morning I arrived at the Cancun Airport, the hotel's airport transfer shuttle was over two hours late to pick me up because he claimed that he thought I was arriving at 7:10 PM instead of 7:10 AM--even though I had emailed the hotel 6 different times to confirm this exact airport transportation. Given the price of my reservation ($1041/night USD) I was expecting a similar level of luxury and amenity to my stay last year at the St Regis Punta Mita--another Starwood resorts in Mexico which I truly loved. Unfortunately, the Papaya Playa could not have possibly been anything more different. My room had no phone at all--so it was impossible to request anything from the hotel--whether it was slippers, room service (which shockingly does not even exist at Papaya), fresh towels, or turn down service--NONE of these things were available. There was also no TV at all; ZERO cellular reception; and Wifi service that worked only 10%-20% of the time, making it nearly impossible to communicate with the hotel or my friends who were also in Tulum for New Years. The hotel offered no form of local transportation and getting around Tulum was nearly impossible. I do not know what the official restaurant hours were, because each time I asked a hotel employee I was given a different answer. However, each time I visited the restaurant it was closed. Add the fact that the hotel offers no room service and no way to get to a local supermarket, and I spent my entire stay in Tulum hungry and without internet. This being the case, I thought I could at least enjoy a nice swimming pool at the resort, since this is what I loved most about your St Regis Punta Mita. However, to my shock, The Papaya Playa does not even have a swimming pool! My room was advertised as having a "private pool" on its patio. This dipping puddle looked like a swamp. It was shallow, discolored, full of algae, and had no filtration device, making it absolutely unusable. My room itself was the poorest room I have ever seen in my life, let alone stayed in. There was not even a separate bathroom, only a showerhead sticking out of the wall behind the bed with no enclosure nor any form of privacy. The stationary towel holder was so near the showerhead that the only two towels would get soaked if you tried to operate the shower. There was one small rod to hang clothing (no closet) and the room did not even have a rug or any form of furnishing other than the bed itself--much like a prison cell. There was a small safe beside the clothing rod, but the safe was broken and would not lock my valuables. Adding injury to insult, the entire lower half of my body was covered in severe painful bug bites after sleeping in this room for one night only. Although I provided photos of the bites to the hotel, they did not care at all. After one night of this miserable horrible experience, I informed the hotel that I would be leaving in the middle of my second night, and requested a refund for my 3rd and 4th nights which I had prepaid (although I really should receive a refund for all 4 nights!!!). I was told to come to the front desk to speak with the manager, but after waiting for nearly one hour the manager never came. One of the lower level employees mentioned that he "thought" if the hotel resold my room after I checked out, that then I would qualify for a refund. Accordingly, I asked one of my other friends in Tulum to go by my room at Papaya Playa early evening the night after I left, and indeed he reported to me that the room was occupied by another guest. Today I finally received a response from the hotel's "Director de Operaciones" who reiterated the cancellation policy and refused any refund for the two nights I did not stay at this impoverished infested filthy rural beach hut compound. Food is delicious but limited selections. To mix it up we grabbed a taxi to downtown Tulum. Downtown Tulum got a great selection of food. Put Tulum on your map, if you are looking for a foodie destination. At Saturday nights the beach club at PPP transforms to a world class night club with international DJs. PPP is close to the Mayan Ruins, which we highly recommend you visit. With a gym and a little market this hotel would be one of the best. read more

BEWARE THE WINE TASTING, UNLESS YOU'RE LOOKING TO BLACK OUT AND HAVE NO SUPPORT FROM THE STAFF. My friend and I took great care to bring our own alcohol and water, after reading reviews a guest who was roofied at Papaya Playa. On our last night, my friend made the mistake of trying the wine tasting event in their private room. I texted her at 8:12pm, and she assured me she was on her way back to our room. She did not arrive back until 3am - she had blacked out, her body was full of bruises and mud all over her dress, and her handbag was missing. She was very distraught the next morning. The last thing she recalled was the French sommelier, whom she could smell on herself. We asked the front desk for security footage of the surroundings including the wine tasting. They refused to cooperate and provide security footage. Even worse, everyone at the hotel was looking at us in a strange way. Could it be that this hotel is willing to cover up for their staff's horrific acts? If you value your life, stay away from Papaya Playa. I am happy to redact this statement if security footage is provided and an explanation for my friend's disappearance is confirmed. WE ARE STILL WAITING FOR SECURITY FOOTAGE. read more

NYE here was the worst. We paid a ton of money to wait in line to get in, to wait in line for drink bracelets. We then had to wait in line at the bar and for the bathroom. Nothing special happened at midnight besides a sad balloon being popped. Staff seemed very overworked and as a result not the friendliest. Our experience started pretty bad but ended up very good. The first 3 days we stayed in the jungle cabana. Horrible experience! The place was a mold box! To the point that I got sick pretty bad for a full day. It's poorly constructed right on the moldy soil. It also lacks of a chair or a bench where to sit so, since the bed has a mosquito net all around, you are forced to stand up or sit on the toilet. After 3 days of this hell we decided to upgrade and get an ocean view cabana. Best decision ever!!! We got a beautiful cabana overlooking the Caribbean Sea with private deck and a hammock! The resort is nice along with the beach. Although it's between 2 rocks formation so do not expect to do long walks on the beach. Food and drinks are ok. Sunday night they have an awesome party in the beach club... Definitely a must go! read more

I came here for my honeymoon and was weary after reading the reviews. Here's what I can tell you: the staff is incredible.. They truly want you to enjoy all of the resort and all of tulum. They always are smiling and approachable. They have great suggestions and next door is a tourism place that does an amazing day trip to the cenotes. You can also rent bikes or scooters for cheap. The food is fAntastic and compared to all other restaurants on the strip, the prices are very reasonable. (Basic breakfast is free too and the breakfasts are great!) The rooms although plain and small have high ceilings. The showers are salt water but if you use soap you feel refreshed and clean. The fans provided in the rooms are weak and at night in the mosquito net over the bed the air can be pretty stagnant. I do recommend an ocean view so the air flows well and the bugs are not a problem. The views are amazing. If you can afford the upgrade to an air conditioned room even better. We couldn't afford that.. The fans suited is fine until the last night when we were really sunburned. The beach is beautiful but unfortunately the water is rocky to walk in (other areas of tulum have nice soft sand). Seaweed can be abundant but I believe that is seasonal. They have cute cabanas to lay in while servers being you cocktails.. It's perfect. Papaya is a nice place. And all places in tulum have this Eco vibe so don't expect cancun style all inclusive resorts. If you take it going in with an open mind, it's a beautiful experience! read more

Overall good experience. The food is fantastic and our room (oceanfront casita / beachfront) was beautiful. Little issues at the beginning when the room we were told we had (via reservation team) was taken when we arrived since the front desk people had no idea about this and do not communicate with their reservation team. They offered us a room (jungle room with private pool) for two nights and then moved us into the oceanfront room we were promised for our last 2 nights when the previous couple moved out. They adjusted the rate per night to be the price of the jungle room which was great. read more

Just got back from an 8 day stay. I don't know why this paradise gets negative reviews. We had a beach front bungalow with air conditioning. It was nothing short of Heaven. The service was super attentive. Our room was cleaned daily. We had hot showers every day. Our bungalow had outlets which was an added bonus for beach/jungle living. The view from our bungalow was just unbelievable. The beach was beautiful, the restaurant had awesome food. My daughter loved the little pools that they had through out the resort. It was an amazing stay and I would recommend papaya playa to anyone going to visit tulum. We had friends that stayed at other resorts along the beach and they paid a lot more and got a lot less. read more

If I could give this place zero stars I absolutely would!!! I am not one to usually write reviews, but this deceiving place makes me want to warn future tourists to not waste their money. This place is ridiculously overpriced for the facilities. The booking.com and instagram photos display this place to be way more luxurious than REALITY; Reality: -the first room they gave us that we booked for close to $500 a night looked nothing like any pictures we had seen. The room was for 4 people and was a room acceptable for maybe one 12 year old boy!! -After 2 hours of debate we got an upgrade for a "$1,000" room that the shower handle fell off of -The kiddie pool that comes with our room has bugs all in it -the sleeping accommodations for 4 people consists of 1 bed and 2 "cots" (which they give zero extra pillows and blankets to go along with) -their are zero pools for guests to use, unless you book the over "$1,000" room U.S. dollars!! -there are no beach lounge chairs for guests to use -the seaweed on the beach right out front of the hotel is OUT of CONTROL!!! I am so sad to have to write this review, my friends and I were looking so forward to our visit Tulum. After spending 2 nights at the hotel blue sky to then come To this experience at papaya playa project was absolutely shocking and not what we expected at all. We are thoroughly disappointed On a side note Simon one of their employees advocated for us to help us get a semi better room and did everything he could to try to make our experience better. read more

I don't like this hotel at all, I expected hot tub and view of the ocean. They gave me a room deep in the jungle and it smelly and humid. The roof looks like it would leak and rug is so old worst than second hand store. No chairs inside the room and air conditioner isn't cool enough. Music is loud if you don't like it... it's plays all day. Place looks so run down in person. Worst mistake ever. I knew I was in trouble driving thru the entrance. If negative stars are possible I would given this place negative stars. The only pool is the ones by the hut by beach, full of sand from people washing sandy foot off before going back to their huts. They look cute until you are in them and visualizing all the feet washing going on and sand filled pool. During my suffering vacation management was absolutely no help at all. This is basically a campground at the beach....there's no tv. There's no one here either the bar had three people on a Friday night at the bar if you consider that happening come here to party. There's parking is tight and danger tape almost everywhere you look. On our last day it did Sprinkle and the roof leaks thank goodness it was not a storm! On Saturday they had a party which hardly anyone came, they made the guest of the hotel back in back in the construction zone where you find a dirt patch with with all their junk. read more

Do Not Stay Here! This was the absolute worst experience I have ever had at a Hotel. We spent $656/per night in a "private villa" with a private pool. Lets begin with the fact they have NO TELEVISION/ NO ROOM SERVICE/ NO HOT WATER.. Even the Holiday Inn has room service. First Night: NO hot water, better yet not even warm water in the shower. We opened a bottle of Moet located in the mini fridge that ended up being hot champagne. Second day: at 7 am power went out for 6 hours. We had No working shower, No Air Conditioner, No Toilet.. We ended up having to take a shower and shave in our $656 pool.. Oh! and use the toilet in the reception. When I approached the reception about the power they said that their generators were not working either. Third Day: at 6:30 am a random worker broke into our private villa gate and walked through the back until we screamed at him and thats when he stormed off (sliding glass door doesn't lock properly). Again, no warm/hot water in the shower. Mid-day, we went back to our room and sure enough we had no power again. I specifically stayed here and not at Azulik to have air conditioner. Oh! and make sure you have WhatsApp downloaded on your phone.. it will be the only way to communicate with the receptionist. IF YOU ARE READY TO NOT HAVE .... NO WARM WATER IN SHOWER, NO ELECTRICITY, NO TELEVISION, NO ROOM SERVICE, AND SOMEONE BREAK INTO YOUR VILLA THEN THIS IS THE PLACE TO STAY. read more

This is my first ever review and I only am writing this because how utterly disappointed and appalled by how awful this place is for the ridiculous price. I am currently on my only second day here and staying for a week. You are essentially camping and paying an ungodly amount. There is also no customer service. When you asked for things it seems like it is a burden on them. There is one outlet in the room, not In the bathroom, so for my girlfriend to get ready for a wedding is impossible. There are cockroaches, ants, and centipedes in the room. There is barely any light. There is no where to hang clothes In your room. Not even a chair to sit on. No where to put your clothes or suitcases. I wouldn't pay $50 US a night to stay here and we're paying 5 times that amount. If I could give zero stars I would. I've traveled to every continent and stayed in places 100x better for 1/20th of the price. Then there's the prices of the bar and everything else. 25$ a day to rent a bike. Nothing and I mean nothing is included. The cost of 1 shot of tequila is equivalent to buying a whole bottle and a 6 pack of beer from the supermarket. I could go on and on more then I already have. But we are in 2019 and everyone listens to real music with words such as high hop and pop. You should upgrade your DJs asap!!! This is probably the most awful profoundly irresponsible place I have had the misfortune of being exposed to. I am actually staying at a lovely peaceful resort nearly a mile away, but as a result of papaya playas god awful music which blasts all night (literally all night and into the morning), I have not been able to sleep for the last two nights. I was recommended by a friend to visit their beach club. That there was a $25 per person minimum to use their beach chairs. It was close to our rental condo so we headed there when we first arrived. The hostess confirmed the $25 minimum and seated us in a beach area. When the waiter arrives he changed it to $55 per person. It was 3:30 the beach was very empty and we were only staying a few hours tops. We were so hungry we decided to just eat in the restaurant. Food was just okay and very over priced. I paid $20 for a salad the size of an appetizer with average taste. I would not return mostly due to the bad service and lie about the minimum. Not sure why he didn't want 3 girls to sit in his empty beach area. Much better options at other hotels where you are treated with good service read more

I will start by saying that Tulum he an attitude. It thinks very highly of itself as a bustling new "cool" town. This is not what the locals think, it's what the hip Bros who moved down there opening up a bunch of boutique clubs. It's entirely overpriced, service is absolutely atrocious everywhere but Hartwood. It's kind of the meat packing of Mexico. That's how tulum was for me. Still had a good time, but not worth the money. That kind of translates into how I felt about PPP. When checking out I heard someone complaining, "you can't be a boutique romantic spot and a club". This place was fine. The price of the bungalows is in no shape, form, or fashion worth the money. There's no amenities. You are not treated in a special way at all. For that much money you shouldn't have to wait 45 minutes for your room after traveling 10+ hours to have someone show you to your room. Rooms are bungalows, they're fine. Basically just a bed. Music is loud from their bar. Food is meh. Breakfast is a joke. Honestly it's a "cool" place and if that's what you live for, you'll love it but it's not worth the money. The owner was a nice guy and so was basically everyone that worked their but the place is not worth it. Lol at ECO lodge with a line at the door to get in for their club night with bottle service. The absolute worst service I've ever experienced. It took an eternity to just receive menus, let alone order and then when it was time to pay our waiter was MIA. Our waiter was not helpful at all and barely said anything to us the entire time. He was acting like he was too cool to talk. The food is good, but with service like this, who cares? That's the last time I'll wait 3 hours to eat a meal. read more

Overall a pretty bad experience. It started out by us finding out there was no WiFi in our room and that they could only guarantee it in the lobby. This wasnt stated anywhere on their website. Later during my visit, my mother tripped and fell on a step because the pathway to our rooms was very poorly lit. She scraped her knee and both hands quite badly. We needed to use flashlights to get around the hotel at night. Not fun at all. The following day, a member of our party reserved four cabanas at the beach, seeing as total we had 7 rooms, we didn't think this would be an issue. After reserving the cabanas and having breakfast we returned to the beach and found one of our cabanas given away completely and one cabana switched from a lounge bed to tables and chairs. When we asked to switch back to a bed, we were treated with attitude from the man working down at the beach. The rooms are nice but I warn you there is no door into the bathroom so if you are traveling with someone you don't want seeing you shower, this place isn't for you. Lastly, whenever ordering food it would take about and hour to receive. BUT... The waiters, bartenders and cleaning crew were very polite and the nicest part of the staff. They made my trip better and brightened my day. Also, i have to say that the place smells poorly. Although this is a commonality in Tulum, i would have to say it is very noticeable on the walk to our room. I would never stay here again and wouldn't recommend it to any friends. read more

this hotel looks nice and has a great location but don't be fooled. pros: location cons: tiny bed way overpriced food and drinks bad stretch of beach (lots of rocks just 10 feet out into the water) constant noise of construction we stopped using the beach here and went to another area due to the constant jack hammering. sucks to have to leave your hotel and pay for a cabana somewhere else to get some peace and quiet the jack hammering didn't stop and we could hear it in our room well after dark while trying to sleep! we also had to go to reception (no phone in room) three times to ask for an extra blanket before someone finally brought one to the room. read more

Not a welcoming place if you are not a hotel guest. The staff made my partner and I feel out of place and very uncomfortable. We waited from 8 till 10 am to be assigned to a beach hut as several male staff members refused to accommodate us, all while several other people were accommodated that had arrived way after us. Elitist attitude, very dismissive and rude male staff members. Very "mean-girls" to say the least. Once accommodated after several failed attempts at getting anyone's attention, the male servers at the beach refused to take our order, we began to wonder if behind the laid back "beach club" atmosphere was an underlying homophobic vibe. For the price, I was expecting a lot more. The room and the bathroom were the most disappointing. Maybe if the weather was nicer, I would have felt differently. The grounds, restaurant, lounge, beach, etc were beautiful. However, the first two days we were there, a storm with extreme 40 knot winds, clouds, and light rain hung around. Therefore we mainly used the room and then went inland. For $300+ paid for ocean front room, I was expecting more than a tiny window with a glimpse of water beyond the cabanas in front. The room was more like "glamping" on full size bed with nowhere to put your bags. The bathroom was very cramped and poorly designed. The tourist office on site was also a rip off for $15 bike rental and $115 cenotes tour. We went into town for more options at better price. So glad we splurged on our last night and went up the road to a more expensive hotel, but was truly luxurious! Also in comparison to the boutique hotel we stayed in Cozumel right before which was 1/3 the cost -- PPP couldn't even compare! Great idea for eco-resort, but need better pricing so expectations are aligned. Fine accommodations if price was aligned appropriately. Overpriced for what you get. Food and mojitos at restaurant were good at least! read more

BEWARE - UNSAFE, WE WERE DRUGGED HERE. My friend and I went here Saturday night because we were told it was the place to go on Saturdays. Unfortunately we were drugged with some form of ecstasy/MDMA/meth. We both became extremely disoriented and dizzy a couple hours after being there (we had both only had one beer and the one cocktail over the course of 4 hours - we were not drunk) before deciding to leave. Thankfully we did because once we got back to our hotel whatever we were given took full effect. Perhaps a fun experience for some but getting roofied with unknown mexican drugs is not my idea of a good time. read more

This place is a joke. I traveled to Tulum with 4 friends for NYE and every single day was amazing and beautiful. We went to some amazing restaurants and bars and had a blast. We were excited about our plans for NYE at Papaya Playa and although getting the actual tickets for the event was what can only be described as a NIGHTMARE, we were still optimistic about the evening. When we purchased our tickets (finally after almost a month of back and forth with the "helpful" staff) we were told we could not get to the hotel until 11:30pm. Yes, you heard me correctly, their NYE party started at 11:30PM. Anyway, we get there at 11pm, hoping to get in a little early and we are greeted by A MASSIVE LINE. I am talking 100 people deep. After about 20 minutes, I go up to the front to ask how much longer it is going to be. I get up and talk to someone who basically yells at me and tells me to get back in line. Still wanting answers, I found a nicer human being and he tells me they were opening the doors at 11:30 on the dot and it should be fast getting in. I find that interesting considering that they had advertised a celebratory dance beginning at 11:30pm. Cut to 25 minutes later, we are finally in. It is 11:45pm, we missed the dance and just found out we have to wait in ANOTHER LINE in order to get a drink bracelet. We don't want to miss the NYE countdown so we skip the line and decide to get drinks after midnight. We find a spot on the beach and wait for whatever is going to happen and you know what happens at midnight...LITERALLY NOTHING. Oh wait, they popped a balloon. No countdown, no fireworks, just a balloon. We all need booze after that, so we go back up to the bracelet line and pay MORE money to get a drink bracelet. By 12:30, we are ready to go! We find a bar but its about 20 people deep to get a drink; we go to another bar and its about 10 people deep to get a drink. We finally get a drink and are told that the drinks are more money than the bracelet line had told us. GREAT NEWS! We are done at this point, we decide to finish our drinks and leave because we are so disappointed in this awful, terrible event. Other negatives: they had an AWFUL EDM DJ (who took 30 minutes to set up his music so everyone stood around and listed to the ocean), the staff was rude and unfriendly but I don't blame any of the staff. They were clearly stressed out and frustrated with how this was all going down as well. This was a complete and utter disaster. I feel badly for all the people that paid so much money for a great new years eve in one of the most beautiful places I have ever been to be met with highway robbery and disappointment. DO NOT GO TO THIS HOTEL!!! There are SO MANY wonderful, friendly amazing places to go in Tulum and this is NOT ONE OF THEM. read more
