Two months ago, went to see a band and have a drink expecting there would be no cover charge. We were charged $15 cover charge each. The band were just OK for the first set, but I think they drank too much during the long interval and the second set was dreadful, so we left. The poster for the event Online made no mention whatsoever of a cover charge so I think that really sucks! Kind of like a bait and switch really. Definitely not ethical. read more

Oh my gash. This historic place is plumb awesome. Whenever I drive through, I have more fun than playin' with a bucket fulla' hogs livers. Old timey, on the creek, nice people, locals treat you right. One even called me Bubba. I discovered this little gem in 1976 before I quit drinking. I played a lot of pool there and moved down the street in the 1980's. Over the years one by one all of my drinking pals from there died from liver failure or accidents. But it's a great place to go if you're an alcoholic. They have alcohol and you can sit there and get wasted and no one will bother you. I used to go there until I got 86'd for asking for a glass of water. True story, ask Roxanne. read more

Dive bar that is pretty much a locals only spot. Came here with a friend who lives in the area. The bar is over 100 years old and is a historical building. Pool table in the back, 3 or 4 craft brews and 5 or 6 standard macro options. Place is cash only and has an ATM for those who don't come prepared. read more

Maria and Jared are awesome and very friendly bartenders, the drinks are well priced, stiff, and tasty. The juke box is internet based so you can find almost any song you can think of, and here is the best kept secret. They have the best conditioned pool tables in all of marin. I 1st visited here years ago when we were camping nearby. The place literally beckoned us from the road & a fabulous evening was spent here. I've since told people about this little gem & since a friend is living nearby in Nicasio, we decided to finally make a return visit. I was a bit nervous, since I'd really talked this place up to my friend, that perhaps it was one of those mysterious cases in which the memory is fonder than reality. Well - thankfully this was not the case. We spent another fabulous night here this weekend & since I now have a friend living nearby - I have a reason to venture out there for more evenings well spent. This place got me so excited, I spilled my margarita! After a hearty hike, my friend and I stopped at this establishment perfectly located about mid-way back to civilization. He liked his beer, I liked my marg, but these were fairly inconsequential when assessed alongside weightier matters such as: - the abounding character-laden decor, including: kewl retro clock, dusty house piano, extremely distressed trumpet hanging on rafter, wood-burning oven for chilly rainy evenings, photos of 50s stars...k, pretty proud I remembered that much but there is so much more! - the absolutely chill clientele. 4pm on a Saturday and the bar is 2/3 full with 50-something locals watching dirt biking, shooting the breeze, and just smiling. - the great staff: the bartendress was distraught and immediately took care of the tequila-pool in front of me. And big bonus with me: they immediately accepted my Facebook friend request! I'm a cheap date, I know. - *POOL* tables. Woody, Veronica, and Masha...you are the best. My friend and I stopped in here after a valiant battle with a tent. We lost. We needed beer. Marsha, the bartender and part owner and her brother Woody, another owner, were there to cheerfully guide us to a "Big 5" and another awesome campground in Guerneville. The next morning, I ran in to Woody at the local deli/grocery store/wierd kid toy store and not only did he remember me but struck up a conversation with me and gave me his sisters number-which I proptly lost... This historic saloon is the real deal. Great atmosphere, good drinks and bartenders, friendly crowd, and the best music scene in the county. The weekend jams are off-the-hook fun, with amazing musicians, where you can hear any and everything from jazz, Americana and folk to funk, country and rock. Highly recommended. I saw a complaint in the reviews about the beer prices. They add a dollar when bands are playing without any cover charge. So, if you think paying an extra buck is a rip-off, then go find a bar that doesn't have that pesky free live music. read more

Do me a favor, I'm going to give this place a review BUT DON'T TELL ANYBODY about it! I love the fact that you'll find everybody here-- young hipsters, old hippies, cowboys and cowgirls, groovy artists, carpenters, long-time locals, Bay Area adventurers, dancing octogenarians. Sometimes a yummy BBQ truck parks next door where you can get some chow. Sometimes after the band has finished and the spontaneous jam afterward has died down a local musician will sit down at the upright piano and the crowd will belt out favorite tunes until closing time. The Papermill Creek Saloon is a painting reminiscent of the impressionist era, by Mott, a great painter who haunts many of the energy vortexes of Marin. Blending colors together in great swirls amassing around bright lights it is not unlike the style of Van Gogh's starry night, borders between objects blur and then all things become one. The bar is located in the In the beautiful San Geronimo Valley where many travelers have known many paths, Samuel Taylor state park is just down the road, and the coho salmon know the waters that run through hallowed red woods, and rolling bluffs. Truly a beautiful area surrounds the Papermill Creek Saloon, and an understood setting for a Mott painting. Just like the painting, I've heard the inside of the bar is also impressionist, and holds; great bartenders, friendly people and an internet jukebox. Just came from hiking Roys Redwoods at San Geronimo and stopped in.. Last stand to grab one for the road.. or, one for the ditch if the case may be.. In all seriousness though this is a nice little spot. They have cool vintage items decorating it and its small and cozy.. theres one small TV to maybe catch a game but its not overly obnoxious like a sports bar. Really nice friendly female bartender that was happy to make some suggestions about where else was good to check out in the area. I wouldn't mind coming on for a beer and conversation again in the future.. only downside is they dont take cards, but a lot of small bars dont so you almost expect that. read more

It's the sort of place that, from the moment you see it, you know you'll feel at home. There's no shortage of interesting quirky stuff to check out inside, and all the people were so friendly. The place looks so appealing from the outside that I had to stop in on a ride back to SF last night. Inside is beautifully rustic with a tiny outdoor patio, two pool tables, and J-shaped bar. The Lodge as we call it, has been a musical home for we musicians. I don't drink, so I never go in unless I'm playing. I've had the pleasure of playing there scrillions of times, and I love it every time. The crowd is peppered with musicians and others with "big ears" and eclectic tastes. The Good: The two pool tables in the back are usually empty. There's an outside "deck" area. Grungy valley ambiance (if you're into that). Kona beer on draught. The Bad: The back smells like the bathrooms. The whole place is dirty as f***. A Long Island is served in a tiny glass, mostly ice cubes, mixed like crap, tastes like crap, and the two sips of booze costs eight ($8) dollars. Seriously. I'll go to the Mark Hopkins or The Ritz next time for a drink. When Jerry or Janis revisit the place, maybe I'll go back again. read more

My husband and I were on our way to the coast and stopped in along our way. We found it to be a very friendly and fun environment. The bartender was welcoming and nice to all those who came through the doors, as were the patrons. It felt as if we had known these people for years. We enjoyed the environment and people so much that we stopped in on our way back home to partake in a couple more drinks and enjoy the comradery.
